Obama still going to Copenhagen; Update: Blizzard hits Copenhagen

posted at 12:55 pm on December 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

With the conference at Copenhagen collapsing and China balking at anything more than a mission statement, some have begun to wonder whether Barack Obama will follow through on his commitment to attend it this weekend.  After all, Obama has already come home from Copenhagen empty-handed once this year.  Would he risk doing it again?  ABC’s Sunlen Miller and Yunji de Nies say yes:

Despite some rumors swirling in Copenhagen that the lack of progress at the ongoing climate change summit will cause President Obama to cancel his attendance tomorrow, the White House says no – the President is still committed to going.

There have been “no changes” to the President’s plans, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters this morning.

Mr. Obama is set to leave this evening for an overnight trip to Copenhagen. He’ll spend the day Friday on the ground in Demark in hopes to negotiate toward a politically non-binding agreement.

Last night Chinese officials on the ground in Copenhagen said they see no possibility of achievement of a concrete operational accord this week, and have balked at the transparency requirements for a possible agreement. The White House said this morning  that the elements of an agreement are there, and hopes China will get on board.

That’s what they’re saying now, but Obama can’t afford to look foolish for at least the third time on his international adventures.  He went to Copenhagen earlier this year to make a personal plea to land the Olympics for Chicago, which wound up in last place in the final selection process.  He returned with considerable egg on his face for that decision, tossed in some cases by his allies.  His trip to Asia got poor marks across the political spectrum for having accomplished nothing, and set people to wondering whether his amateurish handling of presidential diplomacy was becoming a pattern.

The only time a President should travel to such a conference is if two essential elements are in place.  First, the agreement should be all but finished in order to make the President look effective in completing it.  Second, it should have considerable domestic support.  Bill Clinton made the mistake of ignoring the second condition with Kyoto on climate change, and it ended up making him look particularly ineffective with the Senate unanimously voted to ignore the treaty rather than even consider ratifying it.  If the same thing happens again to Obama for the third time in a year, he’s going to look not just ineffective but clueless as well.

In the next few hours, expect pressing domestic issues to pre-empt Obama’s Copenhagen trip.  My guess is that Obama will declare that the impasse in the Senate on ObamaCare has created a need for him to roll up his sleeves with Ben Nelson, Bernie Sanders, and Harry Reid.

Update: In the Department of Delicious Irony, we see that the Al Gore Effect has struck the Copenhagen conference:

World leaders flying into Copenhagen today to discuss a solution to global warming will first face freezing weather as a blizzard dumped 10 centimeters (4 inches) of snow on the Danish capital overnight.

“Temperatures will stay low at least the next three days,” Henning Gisseloe, an official at Denmark’s Meteorological Institute, said today by telephone, forecasting more snow in coming days. “There’s a good chance of a white Christmas.”

Delegates from 193 countries have been in Copenhagen since Dec. 7 to discuss how to fund global greenhouse gas emission cuts. U.S. President Barack Obama will arrive before the summit is scheduled to end tomorrow.

Denmark has a maritime climate and milder winters than its Scandinavian neighbors. It hasn’t had a white Christmas for 14 years, under the DMI’s definition, and only had seven last century. Temperatures today fell as low as minus 4 Celsius (25 Fahrenheit).

Maybe Someone is trying to tell them something …

Considering all the info we’ve been given from the administration (and from many in the MSM) is how good he has been in his foreign relations, I wonder if Obama is even sharp enough to realize that he has been dissed by many other countries.

If not, then I suspect that he’ll continue on to Copenhagen. In fact, if I were a gambling man, I’d bet he’ll be there.

He thinks that much of himself.

The world’s socialist kingdoms are all teetering on bankruptcy as they are want to do…Taxes are too difficult to levy on the already overburdened people. AGW and its collections agency “Cap and Trade” is a new means of raising revenue meant to be a popular tax if you will. After all, its for the good of the planet…These socialist kingdoms and their new Royalty are not so different from kings of old. And, we are not so different from serfs of old.

Of course, it’s real.

No, it isn’t.
I’ve been studying global warming for 3 years. I’m convinced it’s a hoax.

But let’s not look to tax behavorial stuff as the solution.

That would remove the whole reason for the existence of the AGW cult. It’s a power grab, no more, no less. AGW is an attempt by collectivists to create a world authoritarian regime.

Seriously, are any of you against changing behavior given the evidence so far?

Yes, absolutely.
There is no objective evidence to prove AGW is real. In fact, there is ample evidence to prove it’s a hoax.

I think you ought to ask the greenies that. Are they willing to promote nuclear power? Carbon sequestration? High-altitude SO2 injection? If they aren’t (and so far they are adamantly against these and other economical and effective CO2 mitigation schemes), then how serious can their concern for saving the planet really be?

They expect western civilization to impoverish itself and compromise its fundamental principles to save the planet, but they won’t compromise theirs by a single millimeter. What does that tell us?

Al Gore is scheduled before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday morning to once again testify on the ‘urgent need’ to combat global warming.

But Mother Nature seems ready to freeze the proceedings.

A ‘Winter Storm Watch’ has been posted for the nation’s capitol and there is a potential for significant snow… sleet… or ice accumulations.

“I can’t imagine the Democrats would want to showcase Mr. Gore and his new findings on global warming as a winter storm rages outside,” a Republican lawmaker emailed the DRUDGE REPORT. “And if the ice really piles up, it will not be safe to travel.”

A spokesman for Sen. John Kerry, who chairs the committee, was not immediately available to comment on contingency plans.

Global warming advocates have suggested this year’s wild winter spells are proof of climate change.

* March 1, 2007 — Minnesota Public Radio’s “Global Warming: The Home Front” scheduled for March 1 was cancelled due to insufficient global warming (“based on current travel advisories “).
* March 7, 2007 — A Congressional subcommittee meeting on Energy and Air Quality Hearing on “Climate Change: Are Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Human Activities Contributing to a Warming of the Planet?” was cancelled due to a snow advisory. “A SNOW ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES…AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.”

Recall that greenhouse hypothesis maintains that warming due to increases in the greenhouse effect is anticipated to be greatest in the winter.

albill on December 17, 2009 at 3:10 PM

To me, that’s the funniest part of all this. China, North Korea, Vietnam, all these countries that have been around for thousands of years are “developing countries.” Just babes in the woods, the sky’s the limit for the explosive growth spurt those young firebrands are sure to go through any minute now.

But America? Oh, no. We finished with all the developing we could ever possibly hope to accomplish a long, long time ago.

We’re over the hill and need to be put out to pasture. But all those countries that have never had anything but a king or dictator since before recorded history began… they’re the wave of the future.

This reminded me of something years ago.
In So. Cal they were spraying for some insect, I can’t remember which one…but they were spraying from an airplane and requested all the cars be placed inside or covered.
Protesters were really upset, the usual environmental and liberal protesters gathered in LA, and at the beginning of spraying, or at least at 8:00 am the spraying was scheduled, people began coughing and some fell on the ground coughing and barely catching breath. As the planes flew over, the crowd begin gagging and coughing and the announcer of a major station had to cover her mouth. Other stations pulled their newscaster out when they begin coughing. The foul taste and smell, it was really quite a sight…then it was announced.
Because of high winds at plane height, they canceled the spray, the planes were in position, but didn’t spray anything…
When they did spray, a few days later, no one covered the story…
People will believe what they want to believe…and they believe in global warming caused by man…I think it is caused by women wearing to much clothes and not short enough skirts…

It’s become a big joke, though, hasn’t it? All these “global warming” true believers, especially Gore, jetting around in their private aircraft, living in their huge homes, consuming many times the national average “carbon footprint,” yet daring to lecture the rest of us on our thoughtless greed for turning on the light switch as the snow blows in on their rally.
`
Now, the Associated Press has ruled, having devoted nearly half the staff they assigned to Sarah Palin’s book to do “fact checking” on it, that Climategate doesn’t mean any fraud occurred. Nothing to see here, folks, just move along, please! And yet, a single reporter for a British tabloid was able to find even another damning email, all by his lonesome self . . .
`
To those who believe it means nothing, I would ask “WHY bury or lose data, why ‘smooth’ it over with ‘tricks’ to hide the truth, why pressure journal editors not to publish critical articles if the ‘science is settled’ in your favor?”

Even the most dedicated of the AGW scientists will admit that the proposed changes in Kyoto and similar drafts will not affect the climate one bit without the participation of the “developing” nations – China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, etc. – whose rapidly increasing CO2 emissions overwhelm any practically possible reduction in output from the developed nations.
`
It’s a fool’s errand – which is why we send Al Gore on it.
