AP again sees jobless claims rise “unexpectedly”

posted at 10:55 am on December 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Maybe the Associated Press should pick up a Roget’s Thesaurus … or buy a clue.  They report this morning that jobless claims rose “unexpectedly”, which indicates that the AP may have been sipping a little too much of the Porkulus Kool-Aid of late.  Analysts predicted a drop, but the continuing decline in consumer confidence may be taking its toll:

The number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week as the recovery of the nation’s battered labor market proceeds in fits and starts.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of new jobless claims rose to 480,000 last week, up 7,000 from the previous week. That was a worse performance than the decline to 465,000 that economists had expected. …

Unemployment claims have been on a downward trend since this summer. That improvement is seen as a sign that jobs cuts are slowing and hiring could pick up as soon as early next year. But the rise in weekly claims of 7,000 last week, which had followed an increase of 19,000 the previous week, shows that the improvement has been halting.

Halting, as in stalled.  Jobless claims are lower than they were earlier in the year, but that’s a function related to the jobs already lost.  Businesses are still shedding jobs; they’re just shedding them at a lower rate.  That’s because the most expendable jobs have already been lost.  Now businesses are cutting back even further as they foresee no big recovery in the near future, no reason to expand staffs for a demand that does not appear to be on the horizon.

That isn’t an improvement in job creation; it’s a slightly lower rate of job loss.  The latter is also positive, but it’s hardly anything to brag about.  Job losses should have started declining months ago, not just in the last few weeks, if the stimulus programs of the Obama administration were at all effective.  That means that jobless claims will bounce up and down for a long while, which is not “unexpected” at all.

When jobless claims hit a floor number, then analysts believe that job creation has begun, or at least that the net number of jobs is not changing.  But that floor number appears to have gotten a little editing from the AP, too.  Earlier, analysts had used a number between 325,000 and 350,000 jobless claims as the break-even point.  The AP lifts that significantly:

Analysts believe that claims need to fall to about 425,000 for several weeks to signal the economy is actually beginning to add jobs.

Maybe by next month, that number will be 500,000, and the AP can claim that we’ve been adding jobs all along.

But…but…but…the recession is over.

BTW, that word “unexpectedly” is about as ubiquitous as “inherited” these days.

I wonder what the new word will be next year it sure should be unexpectedly.

The reason jobless claims were down the last week of November and Obama was surprised. The unemployment offices were closed for two days that week, Thanksgiving Day and the day after.

The truth is the truth. You can’t solve anything by believing a lie.

When liars are exposed, that is a good thing and I cheer for that. The fact that the substance of the lie was to cover up bad news does not mean I am cheering for the bad news.

It makes no sense to cheer for or against the unemployment figure, anyway. It’s like rooting for the Grand Canyon. I like the Grand Canyon, and think it’s beautiful, but I know that it will exist whether I applaud it or not. So, if I am cheering, here, it is because the truth is revealed, not for the substance of that truth, which exists regardless.

Haiku Guy on December 17, 2009 at 11:12 AM

Businesses hire because they are confident that expansion will be profitable. But who can be confident in an economic climate where tax increases are just a brain-storm away? And we are not talking of just one tax increase. There is Cap-and-Trade, there is the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, there are EPA carbon rules (taxes), there are all sorts of mandates and government regulations and there are health care tax increases of unimaginable portions all coming down the road. So who in their right mind would take on more burdens by hiring when it’s much safer to buy a new labor saving machine?

Obama can turn things around almost immediately by doing the following:

1. Turn healthcare reform over to the GOP.

2. Cancel his Copenhagen trip, get EPA to overturn its carbon finding, and scrap cap-and-trade.

3. Announce plans for offshore and Anwar drilling and plans for permits for nuclear energy.

4. Plans to make permanent the Bush income tax cuts and plans to reduce the top corporate income tax rate to 25% (maybe less).

In short, eliminate the uncertainty of the prospect of his disastrous agenda, which is hanging like a sword of Damocles over our economy.

Why Bush fell for that stupid refund crap in early 2008 to “stave” off a recision when it did not work in 2001 is beyond me. Bush should have pushed to make his 2003 tax cuts permenant. That would have provided the economy with some sense of stability. Companies would have more confidence in what the laws would be like in the future (not even the Dems are stupid enough to raise income taxes in recessions [are they?]).

AP: Inflation rises unexpectedly… Date Night!!

mankai on December 17, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Well, this is expected. The funny math being used to cajole people through this deep recession was bound to catch up.
AnninCA on December 17, 2009 at 11:31 AM

Obama is going to make things much worse.

How long do they expect people to still look to them for solutions when they’ve been the cause all along?

Chainsaw56 on December 17, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Next comes inflation…

albill on December 17, 2009 at 11:38 AM

This is going to be a long climb back from the “Abyss” we already fell off of.

portlandon on December 17, 2009 at 11:11 AM

You could say we fell off the “precipice” a long time ago…

Why can’t there be a wire service that at least pretends to some sort of objectivity?

Bugler on December 17, 2009 at 11:39 AM

That improvement is seen as a sign that jobs cuts are slowing and hiring could pick up as soon as early next year

How can that be when all the seasonal help gets laid off?

In short, eliminate the uncertainty of the prospect of his disastrous agenda, which is hanging like a sword of Damocles over our economy.

Amen. If the AP had the slightest shred of economic literacy, they might understand some of that.

The PA editors are a busy bunch spinning the narrative back on track with this little gem of poo in the punchbowl.

I have the myway.com newsfeed set as my homepage (loads fast, no graphics) – and I’ve just seen the third headline on this same darned story – the first one is what Ed pulled the trigger on, the second was ‘no, wait, that’s less than the average’, and now it’s been flipped to ‘oh, hey, this is great news, things are getting better’.

What a bunch of schmucks – glad to see that they’ve convinced themselves that all the folks that are watching really aren’t paying any attention.

Wind Rider on December 17, 2009 at 11:41 AM

Hey an AP/Gfk poll this morning had Obama’s approval rating at 56% with support even rising among Republicans! Anyone know the story behind that? Did they sample a Dem/Rep split of 70/30 or something?

AmericanUnderground on December 17, 2009 at 11:41 AM

PA – AP, hey if they can fix em up, WTF!

Wind Rider on December 17, 2009 at 11:41 AM

Current AP headline on the story – “Economic reports point to gradual recovery”

schmucks.

I’ll help some of our friends out. From this archived article GDP in 3rd quarter rises to 3.5%; Update: Initial jobless claims steady

Gobama!
