Collapse: AFL-CIO, SEIU hold emergency meetings, may oppose ObamaCare
posted at 4:07 pm on December 16, 2009 by Allahpundit
The purple people-beaters already dropped out of an event to promote the bill earlier today. Now this. Dude, it’s like the KISS army turning on Gene Simmons.
Let the Democratic civil war begin.
Though there’s no official word yet, early indications based on talks with various officials are that the groups will either formally oppose the legislation or, less dramatically, just not fight very hard to ensure its passage.
Labor leaders are fuming at the concessions that Democratic leadership made in the last few days to win the support of the caucus’s most conservative members, notably Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.). A bill that already included one highly objectionable provision (a tax on so-called Cadillac insurance plans) was stripped of a provision beloved by labor: a public alternative to private insurance coverage. Frustration boiled over even further after the leadership succumbed to Lieberman’s demand to jettison even the compromise to the public option — a proposal to expand Medicare to those as young as 55…
As one high-ranking labor official emailed the Huffington Post:
“What is really frustrating folks here is that it’s impossible to make and implement plans to pressure senators when the White House and Reid keep undermining the efforts no one from the outside can put any credible pressure on Senators because they know the White House will back that Senator up whatever they do. If the White House is going to cave to a Senator who spent the entire election campaigning with McCain and calling Obama a traitor how are we supposed to have any leverage over anyone?”
Needless to say, the bill’s never been closer to total collapse than it is now. If the unions say no, then at the very least House progressives will oppose a ping-pong strategy and demand a conference on the Senate bill; at best, we’ll see a few progressives like Feingold in the Senate decide they can’t go forward without a public option. Which means it’s either reconciliation or bust for Reid. A small suggestion for those who’ve been calling Blue Dogs like Nelson to urge them to oppose: Start calling liberals like Sanders and telling them that America deserves a strong, vibrant, robust public option. Stand strong, socialists!
As for other fronts of the civil war, here’s what my map shows. Lefties like Michael Moore and Rosa de Lauro blame the centrist Lieberman and want him recalled from office, even though, um, Connecticut has no recall procedure. Democrats like Gibbs and Jay Rockefeller who are desperate to pass a bill blame the liberal Howard Dean for rallying the nutroots at the eleventh hour to kill it. House Democrats blame the Senate for never getting anything done, with Pelosi now reportedly promising exposed Blue Dogs that she won’t make them take any more tough votes next year unless and until Reid has passed his half of each bill first. And Harry Reid … just sounds lost, frankly. Exit question one: How come so many liberals seem to want to do away with the Senate these days when it’s the Senate that more accurately reflects public sentiment right now than the House? Exit question two: Is NBC right? Is this Dean-o’s revenge on Obama?
Update: Start calling.
“I have real concerns with this bill as it stands right now,” Sanders told reporters Wednesday. “So I’m not on board yet. At this moment, I am an undecided,” he said. “We’re working hard to try to make this bill be a better bill. I would like to support it but I’m not there yet.”
Update: Ah, a new scapegoat emerges. And this time it’s The One himself.
“The president keeps listening to Rahm Emanuel,” said Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.). “No public option, no extending Medicare to 55, no nothing, an excise tax, God!” he exclaimed about the Senate health care bill to Roll Call. “The insurance lobby is taking over.”
Rep. Dave Obey (D-Wis.), told Politico of Senate delays, “It’s ridiculous, and the Obama administration is sitting on the sidelines. That’s nonsense.”*
While many House Democrats have expressed anger with the Senate for the watered-down bill, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) argued that it was really Obama who let centrists take control. “Snowe? Stupak? Lieberman? Who left these people in charge?” he said. “It’s time for the president to get his hands dirty. Some of us have compromised our compromised compromise. We need the president to stand up for the values our party shares. We must stop letting the tail wag the dog of this debate.”
Memo to Weiner: The guy’s polls are in the toilet. Who’s he going to muscle at this point?
Update: Karl wonders what it’ll cost the Democrats to buy back labor’s favor. Card Check?

Beck mentioned this morning how single-payer can get enacted without the public option or the Medicare buy-in.
Either these people are idiots and don’t realize it or they are all geniuses and putting on a show so when this thing passes without the public option or the Medicare buy-in people will think it must be okay since the unions are unhappy.
It could be either one because Obama can’t publicly say that this can still lead to single-payer, but at the same time, you know that Obama has probably talked to Andy Stern since they got Lieberman on board.

Althoug it is off of Ace Frehley’s solo album, “Back in the New York Groove” is on my Kiss’ greatest hits album. “Back in the New York Groove” has the funkiest guitar I’ve ever heard in a rock song. “Back in the New York Groove” and Beth are my two favs, and the reason I bought it in the first place.

How do you kill bad legislation?
Easy. You just don’t lead it as much.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on December 16, 2009 at 4:40 PM
Absolutely!
The simple fact is that these outside forces (SEIU, et. al.) have enormous power — thanks to Osama Obama — and will publicly withdraw their support unless they get an ultra-radical totalitarian bill.
We’re not “winning” anything right now, and I find this whole sorry clusterbomb the opposite of amusing. Their comments, like Howlin’ Howie Dean’s, will force Reid and his traitorbots to put all the nastiest stuff back in, while the unions and the Chicago Jesus’s goon squad put pressure on the weak links in their camp.
Absent a miracle, it’s going to pass. And it will be our worst nightmare: a one-way ticket to totalitarianism and financial ruin.

Please for the love of all that’s good in this world, do not let up for a minute. Do not rest for one second and leave the door open for some kind of a 1159pm, Saturday Dec 26th maneuvering by the Dems to call Congress into session with no prior notice. They will try anything. Because in the liberal mind it is not what accurately reflects public sentiment that matters, it is all about getting what you want. The Senate acts like adults, they deliberate, libs, like spoiled children find them too strict.
Of course, taking his ball and going to a corner like a good spoiled lib.
What Obowma does not understand about the Senate is that ultimately more members care about their own political futures than they do about securing his legacy.
The One was a Washington newbie when he came to the Senate and was then promptly moved up to CEO of the country. He never had time to season as a politician.
He is in over his head against the Senate and the people.

Answer to Exit question #1 They want to do away with the senate simply because the senate is supposed to represent the will of the people (although they are doing a bad job of that.) and #2 Dean-o may be pushing for another run in 2012. He’s watching the polls and I’m sure is picking up some hints as to what to say to attract voters. He picks up on approval ratings then rants. Quite frankly, I don’t trust the majority of politicians, him ever so much.

Dems have a right to be upset with Zero. He does nothing but say ‘you guys need to agree on something’ and then he criticizes them from the sidelines.
He will do the same thing in Copenhagen. He’ll fly in and give some grand lecture about how everyone else needs to step up and agree to something. He won’t offer anything for them to agree on – just a pep talk and then trash talk when they fail to get anything done.
This really reflects on his past as well. He never got anything accomplished on his own of any significance. He never was a leader with ideas. He simply rode along with the system and voted ‘present’. When you don’t take a stance either way it is easy to criticize things when they fail.
Mr Purple on December 17, 2009 at 4:02 AM
What is utterly amazing is the headlong rush to do this. Now, it’s expected of Obama and the far left wing, because they knew their hands would never be stronger and they needed to follow up the “stimulus” theft and the GM/Chrysler “acquisitions” with the massive economic takeover that is “health care reform” before the bills started coming due on the other crap.
`
But what of all these “moderate” Democrats who have no great ideological urge to nationalize health care, and who see its popularity falling faster than Obama’s? What the heck are they thinking? Even those Senators not up next year should be circumspect, since the proposal will be collecting taxes for four years before a dime of benefits are ever paid out (the only way to rig the math so a ten-year plan didn’t add to the deficit – they had already counted the half a $TRILLION in Medicare cuts that will never ever happen).
`
It’s completely insane. Career politicians just don’t do that stuff. Now, there are always a few ideological purists on both sides of the aisle, people who put their principles ahead of any and all political considerations, but these folks were already the way they are before they were first elected and, in most cases, were elected because or in spite of those views, so their electoral prospects aren’t considered. Most would only tick off their constituencies over an issue they truly believed in, and there are at least 25 Democratic Senators right now who are not known for their dedication to socialized medicine to the extent of risking their seats.
`
What are they freaking thinking?
`
I mean, I’m grateful for the issue, and glad they aren’t proposing to pay any benefits for five more years so their usual entitlement strategy of getting people hooked on it before the defects become apparent won’t work, and we can repeal it all in 2013 to loud, sustained cheering and applause.

I feel your pain but the fact is that politicians are there to do two things: (1) spend money (ours) ad (2) get reelected for doing (1). Obama is offering them job secturity since if this goes through, the TARP or STIM funds can be tapped to give them essentially whatever they want in terms of funds/projects. So if (1) is not an issue any longer then (2) isn’t either, save some garden variety scandal. Someone said during the campaign that Obama’s plan was to implement a nation wide patronage system whereby all tax dollars trickle down to all the Dems minions to distribute as they see fit, thus ensuring Obama and the various Dems hold on power in perpetuity. Hence the need to nationalize (read unionize) 1/6 of the economy and drain it of excess dollars. This is really all about money for his cronies and the unspeakeable sums of money that stand to be had from raiding the treasury to be used as payoffs.
