White House using base-closure process to extort Nelson’s vote on ObamaCare?

posted at 1:36 pm on December 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

How desperate has the White House become to get anything passed under the name of health-care reform?  According to Michael Goldfarb’s source on Capitol Hill, the Obama administration has targeted the last remaining Democratic holdout, at least among moderates — and they’re willing to damage national security to extort his support.  The White House has threatened Ben Nelson (D-NE) with the closure of Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska if he opposes Reid’s latest version, despite its status as the headquarters of US Strategic Command:

According to a Senate aide, the White House is now threatening to put Nebraska’s Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson doesn’t fall into line.

Offutt Air Force Base employs some 10,000 military and federal employees in Southeastern Nebraska. As our source put it, this is a “naked effort by Rahm Emanuel and the White House to extort Nelson’s vote.” They are “threatening to close a base vital to national security for what?” asked the Senate staffer.

Indeed, Offutt is the headquarters for US Strategic Command, the successor to Strategic Air Command, and not by accident. STRATCOM was located in the middle of the country for strategic reasons. Its closure would be a massive blow to the economy of the state of Nebraska, but it would also be another example of this administration playing politics with our national security.

The Obama administration has little left to use for leverage.  Why not national security?  After all, if we’re going to bring terrorists into Illinois, what does it matter if we put the US Strategic Command on wheels for a few years?

One reason for the extortion attempt is that the latest version still hasn’t won any converts among the GOP.  Susan Collins (R-ME), once considered a likely supporter of ObamaCare, announced today that the elimination of the public option and the Medicare buy-in isn’t enough to rescue the bill:

Today Collins told reporters that the bill under consideration in the Senate is “too deeply flawed for me to support it.”

“I don’t see voting for the current bill that is on the floor, even with the improvements that have been made,” Collins said. “I’m very leery of the impact of nearly $500 billion in Medicare cuts, particularly the cuts in home health care, which are completely counterproductive to the goal of lowering costs.”

Collins explained that she is continuing to work on the bill not because she intends to vote for it but because, “I think something is going to pass, and I would like to make that bill as good as possible, even if ultimately it’s not a bill that I can support.”

Collins’ colleague from Maine, Olympia Snowe, is not likely to contradict her, and no other Republicans will cast a vote for this monstrosity.  Without the language prohibiting abortion funding, Nelson’s not likely to go for it, either, which leaves Reid at 59 votes — maybe.  He may face some rebellion from the progressive side of his caucus, several of whom pledged not to vote for a bill without any kind of public option.  Getting Lieberman on board may wind up creating just another problem for Reid … unless the White House intends on threatening more base closures and disruption for national security.

Update: Matt Lewis reported this first on his Twitter feed, apparently with a source other than Michael’s.

Interesting note: Offutt Air Force Base is the location where Bush was originally going to address the nation from on 9/11. It was also the location of his first major strategy session on that day. Here’s a pic.

I think maybe even Collins & Snowe might have learned their lesson. They signed on for Porkulus ealry on when the One was riding high in the polls on Hopenchange.
Porkulus was going to save or create millions of jobs.

Now with House Dems deserting the sinking ship, it’s questionable if the Maine Twins want to be associated with Obama.

They both no doubt miss being in the majority and having chairmanships of committees. If the GOP could hang this disaster around the Dems’ necks in 2010 and 2012, the GOP might eke out a majority in the Senate.

Progressive Change Campaign Committee released an advertisement on Tuesday in Chicago attacking Rahm Emanuel for his reported efforts to compromise single-payer. The video itself is a couple months old, but it has been reported recently that Emanuel has pressured Senator Reid to “cut a deal” with Joe Lieberman and abandon the expansion of Medicare that would cover those ages 55-64.

The advertisement concludes “if he sides with insurance companies and undermines the public option, well, he won’t have many fans in Chicago.” Emanuel is widely believed to want to return to Congress after eventually retiring as Chief of Staff.

In running ads against Emanuel in Chicago, the progressives are also reaching Senator Roland Burris’s constituents. Phil pointed out last night that Burris, also a Chicago resident, made ambiguous comments regarding the public option on Monday. Two months ago, Burris stated “unequivocally” that he would not vote for a bill that did not contain a public option.

Amspec blog. Chicago liberals try some Chicago Way on Rahm.

I personally think closing Offutt is a bluff, but then maybe this guy is just dumb enough to do just that. Maybe he thinks that he will never win Nebraska anyhow, so why not? mankai on December 15, 2009 at 2:20 PM

Actually, the more I think about it, it’s a meaningless threat now that it has been outed. Congress has to approve the BRAC list up or down. If Offutt is on it Congress may very well not approve it, as the legislators are not going to hand any administration such a weapon to use against them. They will rally around the issue and vote down the list. And this administration will lose Nebraska in the next election–and may have already guaranteed that.

And they have probably lost Senator Nelson on a lot else to in the future, since as a matter of politics he now can’t identify too closely with an administration that has now essentially threatened the entire state. He’s going to have to show independence.

It’s a boneheaded political move on the administration’s part. You only do something like this if you intend to go all the way to “global thermonuclear war” and need to win at all costs.

Which, of course, is fine by me, but then that’s me. Because total war means total, and no quarter to the losers. That’s the part the administration always forget–for as Machiavelli pointed out, one may be able to start a war on one’s own, but one is rarely able to unilaterally decide to end one.

What is going to happen is that eventually this administration is going to tick off so many people that it has no allies of import in the middle, and then heaven help it, since the allies it will have on the left will not be of the strength needed.

Oh, and Jimbo3? Good luck with your program. You’re going to need it.

Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

Don’t let him get to you. He/she’s just an attention wanting troll. A shock jock if you will.

Fun to know everyone agrees that Obama and Emanuel would threaten Offut without batting an eye, just to put Nelson’s head in a vice. They are that craven.

You’d be willing to have citizens of your own country be nuked, so you can sit back, and let hard working people take care of you, and pay your bills for you. This makes your mindset different from a terrorists…how?

Remember, liberalism is a mental disease. Don’t expect the mentally ill to think rationally.

Here’s an Offut story. There was a checkpoint in a certain building that led down to the command center. Once you passed that checkpoint, it was roughly a 100 feet walk to the very large and very thick door that would slam shut if a breach was detected at the checkpoint. One week after the fall of the Berlin wall, they no longer manned that checkpoint and there was a sign on the podium. “Gone fishin”. This was about 30 feet from the entrance to our SCIF. I couldn’t believe it.

–Well, first of all, I’m joking about the nukes. But second of all, people still have to pay for insurance under this bill. They just may get some sort of subsidy.
