Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on December 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

How bad was Barack Obama’s “good, solid B-plus”? Even the women of The View give Obama a good, solid F for his answer. However, in this clip, the bigger laugh is seeing Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters rip Oprah for her interviewing skills:

Maybe Oprah should have asked what kind of tree Obama thinks himself to be.

Obama made the amateurish mistake of letting down his guard while fielding a question from a sympathetic interviewer.  There was nothing wrong with the question, and Oprah seemed a little surprised that Obama took the bait.  It gave him an opportunity to demonstrate a little humility and remind everyone that American voters give him his grades.  Instead, Obama showed the kind of judgment that led him to answer Lynn Sweet’s question about the arrest of Henry Gates, in order to extol himself as a big success while America suffers double-digit unemployment.  And that’s a big fail on anyone’s curve.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Hilarious how the difficulties facing The American People are less important than the “problems inherited by this administration.” There’s no better statement of where he thinks he stands in relation to the citizens of this country than that statement. We are just “background” to his “efforts” at “success.”

Agree. A huge fail in judgment. He had an opportunity to show support of Americans who are having employment troubles, and he chose to talk about himself. When others need support, he talks about himself. When the country is at risk, he talks about himself.

A- in consistency, as he told us.

Laura Ingraham had the perfect answer.

Paraphrased, “I wouldn’t have given him a letter. I would have held him back for the year, made him re-take economics, business, and history, and soon as he shows that he’s learning something, then I’d grade him.”

Frankly, Obama is playing out the Narcissus myth in modern times. Whenever someone asks him a question about himself, or gives him an excuse to talk about himself, he can’t help but to answer it truthfully and with gusto. Just like Narcissus can’t help but to look at himself in the pond.

Enoxo on December 15, 2009 at 8:30 AM

Second look at Joe Biden?

rbj on December 15, 2009 at 8:30 AM

First of all when is this idiot going to realise that all “new” presidents inherit continuing issues/problems from previous administrations? When has any presdient leaving office done so with the budget balanced, unemployment at 0%, all wars or threat of wars nonexistant, tranquliity throught both parties in congress, and a overwhelming sense of union throughout this country? Answer…NEVER. Someone needs to put on his “big boy” pants and MAN UP! Stop playing the “blame” card and do the job you so desperately wanted.

milwife88 on December 15, 2009 at 8:31 AM

And once again he starts his explanation off with what he “inherited”. I’m really tired of hearing that. What he really inherited was lack of character.

I love that die hard Obama lovers, (Barbara) are forced to tactfully make observations that Barry is an IDIOT!

It is so painfully obvious what an amateur Obam is when he jumps at the chance to massage his own ego.

anniekc on December 15, 2009 at 8:33 AM

Obamateurism in the works:

CYBERSECURITY CZAR position is set up to take the fall for where the buck stops. A new czar took over the position at the end of the Bush administration. Obama plans to fill it with his own man? I wonder what budget changes Obama will redirect.

December 14, 2009
Spafford: It’s a position that’s going to report up to the economic council and the security council. It won’t have any statutory authority. It won’t have any budgetary authority. That does not give it much authority of any kind. The problem is that there are organizations in the government that have some part of the problem space, like DHS, Defense, the NSA. They have good people on it and they’re making headway. But the structure of the government response misses portions of the problem. It isn’t a coordinated effort and there’s no awareness of the magnitude of the problem. There’s certainly a recognition in the military that there needs to be a better response, and that’s what we’re seeing in the establishment of the cyber sub-command. That could be good. But a lot of it will depend on the managing authority. But it does show progress. The downside is that the military views the protection of military assets as their job and the protection of other assets is someone else’s job. They’re not going to protect the banks and the utilities and the telcos and the power grid and everything else. So whose job is it? Where’s the coordination and overall picture of how this works? So when I hear that there are supposedly people who have been interviewed for this cyber coordinator job and didn’t take it, I’m not surprised. It’s not a winning position. I’m not at all surprised by the fact that it’s empty. That position is a blame-taking position.

Fisher: The cybercrime problem seems to really have gotten out of control in the last year or so. As you said, there’s a lot of money involved these days. Obviously the FBI and other agencies are working on it, but it seems like the scope is too big for even them.

Spafford: Think about it in the context of the Mexican drug problem. A couple of years ago, Mexico didn’t have much of a problem because all of the drugs were going north and Mexico was just a conduit. Now, their whole police structure is compromised. They’re bringing in the army. They’re staging gun battles in the streets with drug gangs. They just allowed it to go on too long. And that’s a worry that many of us have [about cybercrime]. The problem is that you’re institutionalizing it and allowing a criminal element to get established. How far away might we be from a criminal group extorting a government for money? Who would be responsible for responding? It’s not a military problem. I don’t think people are weighing the cost benefit and are thinking in terms of these problems. How do we know this hasn’t been happening already? People are looking at narrow problems in their jurisdictions. No one looks at the big picture. They say it’s too expensive to address the whole problem or that these attacks can’t happen or won’t happen. None of those is a good answer.

Keep in mind that Obama most likely knew all the questions (and probably wrote some of the questions) before the Oprah interview.

Privately, Obama was thinking A-, but downgraded it to a B+ for TV.

Obama always lives in the past or the future with his replies, never the now. All his problems are caused by the past, but in the future it will be better. Never mind the now of 17% unemployment, out of control debt, no action in Iran, North Korea, the Middle East…

Oh, I do! But I don’t ‘count’ because I’m rock-solid conservative.

Oprah is probably one of the smartest Citizens in America. She didn’t get so wealthy by being dumb, nor using Affirmative Action. And she gives away millions from her vast wealth to charities. Oprah has earned every dime she’s made.

Obowma is outclassed by her, and her dismay was subtle but plain. So it took Whoopi to defend him, at the expense of Oprah.

I find that funny, and quite telling.

To drop a course late, it remains on the transcript.

Records would evidently bear out that Obama was gifted his special whole cloth degrees without meeting academic requirements in attendance and completion of required curriculum.

Beyond Activism 101, Obama pursued extracurricular community activism; and his Ivy League institutions awarded him degrees for it on two counts. One, they approved of his activism and wanted to lend him credence. Two, they realized, having produced the ACLU, that they were vulnerable to lawsuit and loss of financial donations should they actually enforce academic standards with Obama who was politically allied by the school’s liberal donors. That the elitist institutions thought they’d get away with promoting Obama beyond what he legitimately earned proves their own discredit, no longer being elite.

Unlike the campaign trail however, everyone is tuned into every word he says now- on the campaign trail you just get sound bites on TV. I\’m betting he has no idea what a repetitive whiny moron he sounds like. He is proudly putting on his show for a new audience every night, not realizing that the American people have been watching every performance. But he doesn\’t care, because he never thinks about us at all. Instead of a grade, he needs to be booed off the stage and have some tomatoes thrown in his general direction.
