Maybe he wants the Card Check curtains!
posted at 9:30 am on December 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Chuck Schumer seems pretty concerned about voter privacy … when it comes to his home state. Earlier this month, Senator Schumer raised a stink about new voting booths for the optical-scan balloting New York will adopt, claiming that the new booths do not have a proper curtain to shield voters from prying eyes in the voting process:
Despite the millions of dollars spent to replace New York’s century-old voting machines, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says one critical thing is missing: a curtain.
Reacting to complaints by voters from several counties, Schumer is asking the state Board of Elections to make sure voters have the same privacy with new optical scan machines as they had with the old, mechanical lever devices. That means making sure there’s a curtain to keep anyone else from seeing a voter cast a ballot.
Funny, but Schumer doesn’t seem nearly as concerned with voter privacy when it comes to Card Check. Schumer has spent all year trying to find 60 votes for the Orwellian-named Employee Free Choice Act, a bill that would mean curtains for the secret ballot in union organizing elections — and not the kind of curtains that Schumer insists New York provide other voters. It would kill the secret ballot altogether, and the union bosses would get to see every vote cast for or against the union in such elections.
If Schumer is so concerned about voter privacy, perhaps he can start by rejecting Card Check. Otherwise, perhaps his constituents should be forced to forgo their ballot-station curtains in Schumer’s next election in order to understand what Schumer wants to impose on workplaces all around the country.

Card Check was my first thought; Put up curtains, then have the Democrat and Republican booths labeled.

We don’t have curtains here in Massachusetts, and I personally haven’t noticed any privacy issues, even though I’m generally voting for Republicans.

No curtains here in H-Town, TX. What the hell do you need a curtain for when your body is shielding others from seeing what you’re doing?

i haven’t been following politics only for about 1-1/2 years now, but it seems that the democrats are very hypocritical with their wants. They want a public option, but they don’t want to be on the public option personally. They want card check, but they want their votes to be private. I really could go on….

That picture of Sen. Schumer looks like Nosferatu.
We have an optical scan booth here in Ohio that has three high sides for privacy. We also have strict rules about booth placement so that people are unable to casually look over someone’s shoulder while they vote. It works well and it is more than enough privacy.
myrenovations on December 15, 2009 at 9:40 AM
Curtains would allow ACORN operatives to do what needs to be done while in the booth without any pesky witnesses complaining about so called “laws”.
Vote early, vote often.

It’s curtains for democrats.

Awww I love those machines. Voting in NYC used to be so – arcane – they would have a big book with everyone’s original voter registration card. Everytime you voted you had to sign the card.
Somehow the magic is gone with those dopey optical scan machines.
It’s like I’m in high school again.

I’ve voted in New York State all my life and your vote was never secret. When you pull that lever to open the curtain your vote is printed on a paper roll along with any write in’s. A relative worked at the Board Of Elections and when I wrote a write in vote I was scolded by this relative for causing so much work for my action. We still have some of the old machines around and when there is a re-count what do you think they look at in the old machines?
mixplix on December 15, 2009 at 11:02 AM
Cambridge has curtains.
But then again, they already know how 99.999% of them will vote.
Rebar on December 15, 2009 at 11:02 AM
In my lil area, we don’t have curtains either, but everyone is always respectful of the privacy of others, and no one but the voter touches their ballot. We insert it into the machine. Those working there, will NOT touch it. Also, if you don’t want to do written, you can do it electronically, but I don’t entirely trust those. lol
Schumer on the other hand, can take his hypocritical arse, and rot in hell, for all I care. This arrogance, is the absolute last thing we need running our government.

Thanks for this piece, Ed. I had the same thought when reading the article in The Post-Star yesterday. Schumer has been campaigning in my neck of the woods for the past year, now promising a hefty $1 mil. earmark in the new spending bill for the Street of Dreams, a few blocks from my place. I wish he’d go away. The real trooper for this area has been Sen. Betty Little.
Connie on December 15, 2009 at 11:33 AM
What is it with these backwater Northern precincts that still use mechanical lever voting machines? I’ve lived several different places in the South and have been voting since 1976 and have used the card punch or some sort of electronic voting ever since. Growing up in the 60s my elementary school had a “lever” voing machine (with curtains) they kept in the janitors closet until election day. It was defunct by the time I was of voting age.
Most modern “voting booths” have privacy shields on 3 sides and are typically spaced far apart from each other. Curtains aren’t needed and thus irrelevant.
starman on December 15, 2009 at 11:55 AM
Personally I have always been proud of my voting record and brag about who I support and why when I’m standing in line to cast my ballot. If you are ashamed of how you are voting and don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be voting in the first place.
Guardian on December 15, 2009 at 11:56 AM
This isn’t about the curtains, but I noticed the screen shot of Chuck U Schumer says, “GOP still holding up Obama’s nominee for ambassador to Iraq.”
I’m not sure how old the image is (though certainly this year), but I was just curious: Which party holds the majority in the Senate?

No moral person has ever voted for Schumer.
proconstitution on December 15, 2009 at 8:11 PM
With respect to everyone making fun of Schumer on this one: He is responding to overwhelming complaints from voters from all political persuasions. Many people in this state (particularly upstate) experienced the new scan ballots for the first time in this past election, after decades (or even a lifetime) of using the highly private and accessible lever voting booths. Many precincts had horrible arrangements for voting with this new method, some as poor as basically leaving people to find a nearby flat surface to scribble in their bubbles, with voters either in line or exiting the area literally bumping into others as they were voting. If a person took it upon themselves to find a secluded corner to fill out their form, they were chastised by officials that they had to remain in the “approved” area.
NY is years late on upgrading the voting machines and processes and in typical fashion have managed to foul it up in those places they managed to roll it out in. The people are right to be upset with the implementation of the new system and with the relatively non-private scheme overall and Schumer, at the very least, was compelled to stand with the voters of the state on this. I dislike the man and his politics, but at least he’s being responsive to the voters in this case.
