Arnold: Palin’s full of hot air on climate change

posted at 6:52 pm on December 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

I’m paraphrasing, albeit only slightly. Not that he has many fans left among grassroots conservatives, but in case there are still one or two, this ought to finish them off:

The California governor has become an environmental standard bearer for the Republican party, which is split on the merits of curbing emissions. Sarah Palin, John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 presidential election, has attacked cap and trade and questioned any link between man-made emissions and global warming.

“You have to ask: what was she trying to accomplish?” said Mr Schwarzenegger. “Is she really interested in this subject or is she interested in her career and in winning the [Republican] nomination [for president]? You have to take all these things with a grain of salt.”

Actually, Palin-hater Eugene Robinson filled the better part of a column today with evidence of her interest in the subject as governor. If she’s all about pandering to tea-partiers, she could have declared that she’s “seen the light” and retracted her prior statements about the reality of climate change and the possibility that man is contributing to it. Instead, she’s apt to end up as something of a centrist on this issue in the GOP primaries, where Huck, Mitt, T-Paw a player to be named later will declare that the whole subject’s a fraud.

She came up in his interview with Stephanopoulos this morning too, mere hours before he told Copenhagen that he has his fingers crossed for “planetary transformation.” Click the image and skip ahead to -2:14. He seems to suggest that she’s an out-and-out climate-change denier, but it’s hard to tell since he doesn’t refer specifically to her in that part. It’s worth watching anyway, though, if only for the claim that environmentalism and economic growth can co-exist based on the happy economic example of, um, California. Exit question: This guy’s going to end up as The One’s climate-change czar as soon as he’s out of office, isn’t he?

Why is Governor Schwarzenegger pushing for the same sorts of policies in Copenhagen that have helped drive his state into record deficits and unemployment? Perhaps he will recall that I live in our nation’s only Arctic state and that I was among the first governors to create a sub-cabinet to deal specifically with climate change. While I and all Alaskans witness the impacts of changes in weather patterns firsthand, I have repeatedly said that we can’t primarily blame man’s activities for those changes. And while I did look for practical responses to those changes, what I didn’t do was hamstring Alaska’s job creators with burdensome regulations so that I could act “greener than thou” when talking to reporters.

B. To hear some of the Palinbots around here talk, you’d think she invented the printed word or something.

I regret shooting my mouth off (once again). Upon further review, I see that voxpopuli did in fact clearly state two premises: (1) Palin is a crappy writer; and (2) re-posting her comments in whole, ad nauseum, is absurd.

Upon reflection, there is no doubt my comments were due to being too lazy to read the entire thread before commenting, and just a general love of the sound of my own voice.

I will try to act a little more intelligently in the future, however limited my abilities in that area may be.

The flaw in your logic is that the nation isn’t looking for another Poet Laureate, but a political leader to fix the basic governmental problems… and of course, the “unwashed masses” do vote. There are probably higher vote totals among the “masses” than the erudite elite, as well, so contempt as expressed by you tends to reduce voting appeal of your favored “intellectual leaders.”

Chris_Balsz on December 16, 2009 at 10:42 AM

Palin established an ADVISORY BOARD to look into how climate change is and might effect her state.
She decreed they look into all science and quantify it.
They did.
Man-made global warming is bunk and people should work to adapt to the changing weather, short and long term, not try to stop the climate by restricting something that doesn’t drive it to any noticable degree.
Now the CRU DATA does in fact prove that man-made gorebull warming is a scam.
Palin was right, Arnold was wrong. In fact, many scientists who depended on the studies of the CRU group were wrong, most politicians were wrong, most of the MSM were wrong, most blogs were wrong….most are still pushing the scam.
Of course Arnold has to hold on to the MMGW, he’s wasted billions and years on addressing solutions that have nothing to do with the problem.

Chris_Balsz – the problem is that voxpop’s whole thing is a distraction. My guess is that if Arnold or Obama or any one of the vast majority of our Senators sat down to grind out a couple quick paragraphs the result would be no better Queen’s English than Palin’s comment.

It read fine, its message was clear. Equally importantly, its message was on target. Arnold’s an incompetent clown clinging to the enviro-loonies as his last base of support.

The California governor has become an environmental standard bearer for the Republican Democrat party, which is split bent over and grabbing their ankles on the merits of curbing emissions-because, after all, caulking is sexy. Sarah Palin, John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 presidential election who should have won, has attacked cap and trade and questioned any link between man-made emissions and global warming because there is no proof that it exists, only proof that evidence of global warming was manufactured.

Cf:

Who needs policy? In her world—and the world of legions of conservatives who revere her—the persona is the policy. Palin is beloved because she’s (supposedly) just like ordinary people, which (supposedly) gives her a profound understanding of their needs.

That attitude used to be associated with the left, which claimed to speak for the ordinary folks who get shafted by the system. Logic and evidence about policy, to many liberals, were less important than empathy and good intentions. Now it’s conservatives who think we should be guided by our guts, not our brains.

Just about every post I have seen of yours is denigrating Palin (Quitter) or her supporters (Quitter Fans). Why do this, if you are truly a conservative? You are on the same team with her. You don’t have to support her for elected office, but at least show a little bit of class.

BPD on December 16, 2009 at 12:19 PM

Wordy little thing, isn’t she? And her sentence structure is “convoluted,” to say the least.
voxpopuli on December 15, 2009 at 10:06 PM

Where is the “wordiness”? How is it “convoluted”?

But I can accurately state that her writing ability sucks.

You mean you can assert such a thing. If you wish to claim “accuracy” in such a sweeping judgment, need evidence.

rrpjr on December 16, 2009 at 12:24 PM

Vox by running and gathering support she will bring the arguements toward conservatism.

Right now the frontrunners are Mitt, Guiliani, Palin and Huckabee. Of those Sarah is the most conservative, possibly the worst candidate but IMO the most conservative.

We don’t have a perfect candidate, maybe Sarah wins, maybe she doesn’t but she moves a lot of races (Congressional and Govenors and the primary) to the right.

LOL Puh-leez. Compared to the average Palinbot I ought to get a Nobel Prize for Class. Do you even READ some of the things that come out of their keyboards? Invective; cursing; guttertalk.

And I’m not talking a few bad apples — exceptions that prove the rule. I’m talking the rule itself, where they are concerned. So yes, I do think I take the high road already.

I would love to speak with most of them as equals (and some of them I do) but frankly it’s just not possible with the majority, I’m afraid.

As for the shots I take against Caribou Barbie herself, well, if you’re going to run for President, you better be able to take a whole lot more than that. And she’s all but declared her candidacy. So.

Sarah Palin wants to be a Hero to the movement?

A REAL Hero?

Then find us a worthwhile candidate for President, Sarah. And do it fairly soon.

It does no good to shift the debate to the right if the left is still going to prevail in the end.

I think you are missing the point. You state you are a conservative. If this is true, you would not make references to Palin as “quitter” or “caribou barbie.” In fact, you would be agreement with her on the vast majority of issues. If you think she would make a terrible POTUS candidate, you would simply just state that. But the fact of the matter is that 99% of your posts here at Hot Air are ad hominem attacks on her and her supporters. That doesn’t compute. You are not a conservative. You are simply a mean, angry person. You don’t like anybody here. Nobody here likes you. Why waste your time being here?

voxpopuli on December 16, 2009 at 12:35 PM

Yes it does. If we are going to truly win we are going to have to change the entire arguement. We have to defeat the idea that the Government can and should fix individual problems.

Obama won the last election, Democrats won big time, and this might just be exactly what the Republicans needed. We have seen what RINOs like McCain get us. We lose weather they win or lose.

I haven’t seen the party offer me anybody — ANYBODY — to get jazzed about.

And half of that I blame on Sarah Palin. I think the powers-that-be see her as kind of a fallback candidate and so it’s making them lazy about doing their jobs.

And she isn’t helping, either. I think right now she’s on an ego trip — which is fine, she’s probably earned some of that given her brutalization even after the last contest.

But I repeat: If she wants to be a REAL hero to the conservative cause, next time I’m asked, “Vox who do you like for President,” I should be able to answer that question, because she helped me do so.

Palin got involved and helped orchestrate the Hoffman race up in NY. I seem to remember you getting all kinds of tingles down your leg then.

There is no difference in suggesting that she do the same for 2012. And if I’m saying she might consider an even more, proactive role, seemingly a devout Palinbot such as yourself would applaud that sentiment.
