Obama: I’d give myself a B+; Update: Video added

posted at 11:36 am on December 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The problem that has afflicted Academia for decades has now moved to the White House: grade inflation. When Oprah Winfrey asked Barack Obama to grade his first year in office, to which Obama replied, a “good, solid B-plus.” Jake Tapper covers the story for ABC, while a local Fox affiliate in Rhode Island has a good roundtable discussion. Click the first image to watch:

On her Christmas in Washington special on ABC last night, Oprah Winfrey asked President Obama to grade himself.

“Good, solid B-plus,” the president said.

Explaining, he said, “we have inherited the biggest set of challenges of any president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

“We stabilized the economy, and prevented possibilities of a Great Depression or a significant financial meltdown. The economy is growing again.

“We are on our way out of Iraq. I think we’ve got the best possible plan for Afghanistan.

“We have reset our image around the world.["]

First, as one of the commentators notes in the clip, Obama doesn’t get to grade himself. That comes from the electorate, which will use the academically-nicknamed midterm elections as its first opportunity to grade Obama and his agenda. So far, the indications are that Obama is about to get a big failure notice, and the march of Democratic retirement suggests that some of Obama’s school buddies are already aware of that.

If anything, Obama gets an incomplete. His legislative agenda is still stuck at his first project, health-care reform. Obama himself has basically shoved responsibility for this shared project onto his lab partners Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, showing up only to do classroom presentations and hog the credit. Cap-and-trade has fallen off the table altogether. And only belatedly did Obama return to the issue that most concerns his actual graders, jobs.

And on math, Obama gets a big, red F. After all, it was his team that missed the 10-year deficit projection by over 22% and two trillion dollars. His Porkulus project was supposed to result in limiting unemployment to 8%, and his estimate that it would reach as high as 9% without out the stimulus turned out to be wildly incorrect.

Hot Air readers are more qualified to grade Obama than Obama himself. After all, he works for all of us. What kind of grade would you give Obama?

I think Obama’s grade should reflect the crack staff he has assembled in dealing with the No.1 issue facing America right now….The Economy:

“We are in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression”

Barak Obama

“Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren,” Obama said in a 2006 floor speech that preceded a Senate vote to extend the debt limit. “America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership.”

Obama later joined his Democratic colleagues in voting en bloc against raising the debt increase.

That was then…this is now..

Now Obama is asking Congress to raise the debt ceiling(13 trillion), something lawmakers are almost certain to do despite misgivings about the federal debt. The ceiling already has been hiked three times in the past two years, and the House took action earlier this year to raise the ceiling to $13 trillion.

Congress raised the debt limit just a few months ago when it passed the $787 billion stimulus package.

Unemployment is in double digits,Deficits in the trillions,Taxes going sky high,The Dollar becoming null and void,Foreign investors pulling out of America,GM,Chrysler, and Banks being taken over by the government ,and the President has this to say about his failed stimulus:

That is why I have moved quickly to work with my economic team and leaders of both parties on an American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that will immediately jumpstart job creation and long-term growth.
There is no doubt that the cost of this plan will be considerable.  It will certainly add to the budget deficit in the short-term.  But equally certain are the consequences of doing too little or nothing at all, for that will lead to an even greater deficit of jobs, incomes, and confidence in our economy.  It is true that we cannot depend on government alone to create jobs or long-term growth, but at this particular moment, only government can provide the short-term boost necessary to lift us from a recession this deep and severe.

“Yeah, it gets rushed through without any clear deliberations or debate, then these kinds of things happen.  And I think that this is in some ways what happened to the Patriot Act.  I mean, you remember there was no real debate about that.  It was so quick after 9/11 that it was introduced that people felt very intimidated by the administration.”

not so much:

Good news: Congress ready to vote on 1,000-page stimulus bill it hasn’t read yet

The Democratic bills in the House and Senate are a thousand pages long. They’re still changing as committees try to mark them up, or as they mark up other versions of health insurance legislation. There’s huge uncertainty about how lots of provisions in the bills and under consideration would work.

Explaining, he said, “we have inherited the biggest set of challenges of any president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt.”

I really wish this jackass would STOP going on about the problems he inherited, considering that he spent more money than any other presidential candidate in American history fighting to get the job. He really needs to stop yammering about the cards he was dealt.

“We stabilized the economy, and prevented possibilities of a Great Depression or a significant financial meltdown. The economy is growing again.

Oh sure. The rest of us are just waiting for the Adjustable Rate Mortgage bomb to go off next year. By the way, somewhere between a tenth and a sixth of all working Americans are out of work. Meanwhile Obama and his termite minions in Congress are busy desperately trying to push on us freedom-destroying healthcare-insurance-reform and artificial-energy-crisis legislation that we’ve all made VERY VERY CLEAR that we do not want.

What kind of horror do you suppose he would have to visit upon this country before he’d give himself a failing grade? Oh wait, he’s a narcissist. He’s pretty much guaranteed never to give himself a bad grade. America could become an empty radioactive desert on his watch and he’d be telling people he thought he did pretty good, given the cards that he was dealt.

Teacher’s Comments (Barry’s sophomore year in high school): Barry gets along with some students, although at times these students seem to be mesmerized by his presence. Other students in the class don’t care for Barry and believe he is conceded and consdescending. After a thorough review of Barry’s homework and tests this semester, it appears as though someone else has been doing his work for him. This might explain how he can spend so much time in the smoker’s pod. Despite some concerns about his performance, I think it is only fair that he receive a grade is a B+, particularly in light of his outstanding speaking ability.

people who actually think this are brain dead

hey drone, all he did was put us on the hook for another trillion and half dollars (and im just talking about the phoney “stimulous” bill and not all the other massive spending ) while committing generational theft, and funding his special interest groups

if there was one bailout that actually may have saved anything from the brink, it was tarp for the banks, and that was done under bush. even that shouldnt have been done

Obama did no such thing.

Even if you believe his shaky 640,000 jobs “saved or created” number, adding up the payroll numbers of 2009, the Stimulus is only responsible for about 15% of the slowdown in payroll losses. And remember payroll losses were declining for months before any significant stimulus spending got out the door.

So the downturn of the economy was abating with or without Obama. At best all he did was create some more jobs at a massive cost.

I’d say B, mostly because he brought us back from the brink of economic collapse. Pass healthcare reform and it’s a B+.

crr6 on December 14, 2009 at 12:08 PM

Look, he’s not a king. Adjust upward or downward for what he’s done vs. what congress has done. We’ll probably part ways on that but it’s worth considering.

TheUnrepentantGeek on December 14, 2009 at 2:11 PM

R for R.I.C.O.

F for F.B.I.

so B must stand for B.L.A.G.O.

phreshone on December 14, 2009 at 2:11 PM

Only a B+! What an humble man he is. A true Uriah Heap.

Dhuka on December 14, 2009 at 2:13 PM

He’s exceeded my expectations. I thought he would be an unmitigated catastrophe. Instead, he’s only a disaster. Good thing he’s so dumb, or he might be a catastrophe.

mr.blacksheep on December 14, 2009 at 2:19 PM

Obowma might give himself a B+. I, on the other hand, want Divine Providence to give him Hell–without ice water.

Liam on December 14, 2009 at 2:24 PM

why did Oprah even ask that question

cmsinaz on December 14, 2009 at 12:53 PM

Why, to give him an opportunity to demonstrate how humble he is. And as much of a butt-kisser as she has been, even her jaw almost dropped when she heard it. That was awesome, lol!

kg598301 on December 14, 2009 at 2:34 PM

Dhuka on December 14, 2009 at 2:13 PM

He’s a heap, alright.

kg598301 on December 14, 2009 at 2:35 PM

Obama: I’d give myself a B+;

This is what happens when the students start running the school (excuse me -S-K-U-L).

MaiDee on December 14, 2009 at 2:37 PM

Yeah well…I just checked with the guys at the Jewish house and they said that every one of Obama’s answers on the Psych test was wrong.

The Ugly American on December 14, 2009 at 2:59 PM

I gave him a D because the truth is its going to get much worse so his grade will have to go down. If we were giving percentages though, I’d give him an F with a 40%

El_Terrible on December 14, 2009 at 3:14 PM

On the plus side, a clip of him giving himself a B+ could make good ads.

El_Terrible on December 14, 2009 at 3:15 PM

The NY Daily News is running its own poll on 0Zero’s performance. VOTE NOW!!
He’s currently FAILING (F) at 53%.

Yephora on December 14, 2009 at 3:17 PM

Obama says he’s “reset our image around the world.”

How does one quantify that? And how do you know if that’s an improvement or not? We still have seen no action from any foreign nation that would support that statement, have we?

I would bet that he has “reset our image” with leaders in Poland, and with protestors in Iran. And I know Britain is aware that their relationship with the U.S. has changed. Is that what he’s talking about?

hawksruleva on December 14, 2009 at 3:17 PM

You can not earn a B+ and an Incomplete simultaneously, a matter that any student who attends classes knows. You also can not phone-in your “present” status.

maverick muse on December 14, 2009 at 3:28 PM

hawksruleva on December 14, 2009 at 3:17 PM

Obama says he’s “reset our image around the world.”

Reset=Overcharge

Evidently, Obama told Oprah that he ALWAYS gives better gifts than he receives. Tell that to Gordon Brown and the Queen of England.

maverick muse on December 14, 2009 at 3:31 PM

Further proof that he should not been allowed to graduate out of kindergarten.

Slowburn on December 14, 2009 at 3:36 PM

I give him a D, mostly because while he is actively trying to destroy America, he can’t quite get anything passed. Ironically,it’s his stupidity and arrogance that keeps him from getting an F.

JavelinaBomb on December 14, 2009 at 3:44 PM

This reminds me of steve martins character in “the man with two brains”

while describing himself to an author SM says,

“… With pioneering research in the cranial screwtop method, I may go down as one of the greatest…, let’s make that, as the greatest neurosurgeon ,

I don’t want to sound wishy-washy”

Sonosam on December 14, 2009 at 3:55 PM

I give him an A plus for sneaking communism in through the back door, and fooling every moron that voted the commie into office. Another A plus for implementing the Cloward-Piven strategy. He’s more slippery than Lenin and Stalin combined…Workers(MORONS) of the world unite!!!!!!!!!!!

adamsmith on December 14, 2009 at 3:56 PM

I’m sure the MSM will call him modest for giving himself only a B+. In their eyes he’s still an A+++++! The extra ‘+’s are for his overwhelming modesty.

AUINSC on December 14, 2009 at 3:58 PM

adamsmith on December 14, 2009 at 3:56 PM

You beat me to it. I was going to say he’s far too modest and deserves an A+ for the reasons you cited.

ncborn on December 14, 2009 at 4:00 PM

It appears that Obama is victimizing himself with the soft bigotry of low expectations.

misterpeasea on December 14, 2009 at 4:02 PM

Baxter Greene on December 14, 2009 at 12:18 PM

You see an F because you look at our nation as a Democratic Republic founded on Judeo-Christian principles, the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

obasoros looks at our nation as his very own budding commie/globalist dictatorship which will be a stepping stone to his kingship of the New World Order.

Therefore, obasoro’s intentional cultural, social, economic, foreign affirs, contract and private industry nullifying wrecking ball has been fantastically efficient.

Wake up fellow HotAirians! If we could grade higher than A+ with a star for all of the above, we should, ’cause obasoros is double-plus good at being bad.

tigerlily on December 14, 2009 at 4:03 PM

Well, Affirmative Action would teach that destroying the economy and making this nation unsafe gets a B+. If you show up on campus and make half of the classes, that’s the grade you get.

Hening on December 14, 2009 at 4:04 PM

didn’t see your post when I wrote mine, adam. but, you know, great minds and all that….(sarc, at least on my part)

tigerlily on December 14, 2009 at 4:06 PM

I give him a B + S

macncheez on December 14, 2009 at 4:10 PM

I won’t believe any of his grades until I see an actual college transcript. Pretender to the office.

SirGawain on December 14, 2009 at 4:10 PM

Obama says he’s “reset our image around the world.”

How does one quantify that?

hawksruleva on December 14, 2009 at 3:17 PM

Statues of him in Muslim countries.

SirGawain on December 14, 2009 at 4:13 PM

Baxter Greene on December 14, 2009 at 12:18 PM

You get an A+ plus a +7%…!

Seven Percent Solution on December 14, 2009 at 4:18 PM

Okay, fess up, who is the 1% who gives Obama an A?

Terrye on December 14, 2009 at 4:27 PM

On a scale of A through F, I’d have to give him e a Q.

5u93rm4n on December 14, 2009 at 12:49 PM

That’s rather generous, going by his speeches I’d give him a ZZZZZZzzzzzz…….

SG1_Conservative on December 14, 2009 at 4:33 PM

Doprah looks like crap in that video. Did someone give her a black eye?

Knucklehead on December 14, 2009 at 12:31 PM

kg598301 on December 14, 2009 at 2:35 PM

A steaming heap.

Del Dolemonte on December 14, 2009 at 4:50 PM

President Obama is so unbelievably arrogant. Imagine if instead of giving himself a B+ (almost A- if he gets healthcare passed) that he gave himself a C and said that he understood that the American people were not happy with some of the choices he has made. Imagine if he said he deserved a C because he realized that he needed to stop all the spending.

He really deserves an F for not being able to read the mood of the American people.

texasconserv on December 14, 2009 at 4:56 PM

What an effing joke Turkmenbama is.

He’s never been more “Turkmenbama”-esque than this sad display of colossal hubris.

I can’t stand Dirty B itch Winfrey either.

He never comes off comfortable…only when he is laughing at the American peeps or if he’s making a Special Olympics joke.

Oh, ZerObama…you get a big, fat effing F from me!

The DUmmies at Democrat Underground had their getalifes in a bunch over this story this morning. Luckily PJ wades over there so we don’t have to:

Del Dolemonte on December 14, 2009 at 5:04 PM

Solid B+

Just fair, on a scale from A to Z where A is the lowest grade.

Rookie on December 14, 2009 at 5:05 PM

I’d actually grade him an F, even though he actually rates as a BMF (B standing for Big, the rest is pretty obvious) overall.

pilamaye on December 14, 2009 at 5:11 PM

B+. LOL.

This is the grade people who really think they deserve an A give themselves in order to appear humble.

macncheez on December 14, 2009 at 5:17 PM

I’m glad to see he still has a great sense of self-esteem. Like all the kids who aren’t learning diddly squat at school–but still feel like they are.

CRR you dipshite

OBAMA is kicking the can down the road

Yep wipe your chin off. You idiots should be ashamed.
