House committee chair announces retirement
posted at 12:55 pm on December 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
When a slew of Republicans in the House announced their retirements in 2006, people took it as a leading indicator of a coming realignment for George Bush’s second midterms. Already we have seen three Democrats announce retirements in 2009, well ahead of the 2010 midterms, including Brian Baird (D-WA), who is only 53 years old. Now Bart Gordon (D-TN), who will be only 61 years old next month, has also decided to retire despite chairing a major House committee. A.C. Kleinheider published the press release from this morning for the Nashville Post:
After more than a quarter-century of public service to his home state of Tennessee, U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon announced his plans to retire from Congress when his current term ends in 2010.
“I feel honored that the people of Middle Tennessee have allowed me to serve them for the past 25 years,” said Gordon. “Every decision I have made in Congress has been with their best interests in mind. I hope the people here at home feel that I have served them as well as their good advice and views have served me. ….
The son of a farmer and schoolteacher, Gordon was named chairman of the House Science and Technology Committee in 2007, becoming Tennessee’s first full committee chairman in 30 years.
Gordon became the chair after Democrats took control of Congress in those 2006 midterms. Holding a chair on an important committee is a major consideration for both Gordon and Tennessee. If Gordon thought he could hold his own seat and Democrats hold the majority, he would be loathe to relinquish it.
National Journal explains one part of the decision:
But regardless of the reason, Gordon leaves open a seat Dems could have trouble defending. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) won the district in ’08 by a 62%-37% margin, and national GOPers instantly characterized it as a lean-GOP seat that is likely to eventually fall into their hands.
Gordon joins Reps. John Tanner (D-TN), Dennis Moore (D-KS) and Brian Baird (D-WA), all of whom have announced they will step down since Thanksgiving. GOPers are thrilled with their prospects in all 3 seats.
If it seems like the (Democ)rats have begun to flee a sinking ship, it’s probably because they are. This is the first full-committee chair to make that decision, which is a significant development. Expect these “retirements” to accelerate, especially in the blue-dog districts that gave Nancy Pelosi her majority.

25 years in any job is too long. Think about it. This man first took office when Reagan was in office. He might be the nicest and most able politician on the face of the planet and he still overstayed his time in DC. And don’t get me started on Teddy Kennedy, John Dingel, Robert Byrd, John Conyers, etc.
Term limits make sense I say two terms in the Senate or six terms in the House and then it’s back home with a mandated lifetime ban from lobbying.
highhopes on December 14, 2009 at 1:05 PM
Offhand, is anyone aware of a decent rundown on House or Senate races (or both) around the country? I’d really like to see something that lays out the 435 House races and 33 or so Senate races and categorizes them in terms of (1) hopelessly liberal (say,Pelosi, Maxine Waters districts); (2) can’t lose conservative (say, Boehner); (3) ripe for GOP pickings; (4) iffy GOP districts; and (5) toss-ups.
To be able to begin monitoring developments during the next 11 months would be a Godsend. In effect, a scorecard of races.

I’m starting to think that the pace of these “retirements” may have something to do with NOT wanting to serve under Obama.

Gordon is my Congressman, and I am soooo HAPPY to see him go!!! He has voted the wrong (liberal) way over and over again. He does not listen to his constituents at all. TN is a conservative state, and he just didn’t seem to “get” that or to care about it. Woohoo! This makes my day!!

It’s pretty pitiful that you leave just on a chance that you won’t get your way constantly. And I say that for both sides of the aisle. Although twenty-five years in Congress is too much and I say that for both sides of the aisle also.

If they are leaving with anything paid for by the American people, they can either give or pay it back.
Also I want to see what other “business” they are conducting with…. say lobbying or lobbying aide (which is not covered under ethics) and what lobby as well as their salary which should be made public to the people!
I bet people will see something interesting.

At a minimum, how about comments on other Blue Dogs who may be in trouble? I’m fascinated by this.
For my money, I’m in the Cincinnati district of Jean Schmidt (R). It’s been a reliably GOP seat for years, but it’s been getting a bit bluer over time as conservatives have moved north to two northern districts (one is Boehner’s) and libs and ACORN have gotten out the vote in some liberal and black pockets.
To the west of us is a a largely blue-collar district that swing back and forth. In the 1970s and 1980s, I recall, it had a conservative Dem, from the mid-1990s till recently it had a GOP, and in 2008 it elected a pea-brained, young Dem who seemed to fashion himself a conservative. His votes have been partyline, and I have to believe he’s in trouble, but I’m not sure if a contender has been lined up. That district does not belong in Dem hands.
Others?

When NASA and NOAA have to start giving under oath testimony on the “Hockey Stick” the content of the emails and why they didn’t pursue the logic of those that disagreed with the “Settled Science” it will be embarrasing.
If the House changes hands in 2010, look for MASSIVE retirements from the EPA, NASA and NOAA in preparation for the under oath hearings and document requests.

When will the moderate Dems start switching parties? Before the 2010 election, in anticipation of the collapse of the Dhimmi brand, or will the survivors of 1994/2010 decide to switch and stay in the majority party? I’m betting it will be some of both.

Now if we could just see an equal number of Republicans retiring, we might really see positive change. We need a major turnover in the House of all the who have been there more than 8 years. Should have a limit on staff as well.

Nice theory but these are career politicians. They have no shame.
That being said, I think the “tea bag” movement needs to change into the “pink slip” movement The only way I can see any change in the status quo is by cleaning house and starting anew with a crop of Congressmen who are not vested in so much seniority and campaign cash that they are pretty much bullet proof when it comes to ignoring their constituents and still getting the votes from the same morons.
highhopes on December 14, 2009 at 1:37 PM
One downside to all these Democrats – I haven’t studied them, but I assume they’re from conservative/centrist districts – jumping ship is that there’s nothing voters can threaten them with for voting for ObamaCare. They’re leaving anyway, so they’re free to vote away our liberty.
On the other hand, I’ve been assuming that Democrats from risky districts have been promised jobs as lobbyists if the voters retaliate against them for voting for ObamaCare, so it might not make much of a difference.

A lot of political movies exaggerate to make a point, but Mr. Smith goes to Washington seems like a very accurate depiction of the degree of corruption.
This reminds me of a joke:
Four professionals were sitting around a table, discussing what profession was the oldest. The lawyer made his claim for the honor by explaining that when Cain killed Abel, a lawyer was needed. The surgeon said it goes back much further than that. When God made Eve out of Adam’s rib, his services were called upon. Then the engineer said it goes back much further than that, because engineers were required to make order out of chaos. Then the politician said, “who do you think made the chaos?”

There are congressional term limits – its called your vote! The Founders wanted it that way, and if we would stop meddling with the system we might not have the mess we have now. That said, this is a big hooray because it is an indicator that the libs know they are in trouble and it is better to retire than lose. It is also a hooray because it is much less expensive to run in a race when there are two newcomers vs a well known incumbent.
Govgirl on December 14, 2009 at 2:58 PM
It’s almost a certainty that several billion of the stimulus slush funds have already made it into the hands of Acorn, it’s hundred-tentacled affiliates and the unions.
In a world without the above criminals, maybe we could read the writing on the wall and be fairly optimistic that with a lot of hard work we can at least take back the House in 2010.
However, our world, particularly our political world, is infested with this lowlife, funded to the teeth and ready for acts of voter fraud as numerous as the sands on the beach. Let’s not forget that the courts and the DOJ, compliments of, “let’s give aid and comfort to our terrorist enemies” obama and holder, will not prosecute or even investigate the voter and registration fraud their buddies will perpetrate.
Soros has the wheels in motion to get the individual states lined up with the proper Secretary of States voted in who will also play it the Soros/obama/Commie way to make sure 2012 is in the bag for his little puppet obama.
There should be a plan set in motion NOW, to prevent and combat what will be a tsunami of fraud in 2010. Under Obama, there will be no more fair or free elections – without them, all the rest of the tea-partying, protesting and talk has been and will be a WASTE, as the criminal element is, as Stalin said, making sure that they are the ones who “count the vote.”
tigerlily on December 14, 2009 at 3:04 PM
Oh, and I forgot to mention that pesky little problem of illegals being allowed to vote – no doubt early and often with a just a little encouragement from their local Acorn affiliate.
Yes, our Founders instituted a system that is the best in the world. But we need to face the bleak truth that it has been taken over and is being dismantled by obama and his ilk, and there is no one to hold them to accounts. Our Founders also called for an action to be taken if this happened – they called for the dissolution of the government and it’s reconstitution according to first principles. We’re coming up to that crossroad at breakneck speed. However, obama will keep us diverted; already he gave a phony “pro-USA” Nobel speech and Hillary is “losing patience with Iran” – and there is always the financial meltdown that he’s working on – it will be a great opportunity to institute Martial Law and grab all the guns he can….. This obama mess that we have given the keys to is about as entrenched an evil as we have seen in our history, and is a direct result of our blindness as a nation, and how far we have fallen because we have become a nation that has aborted 45 million of our own. We aren’t going to be able to just vote them out. That very naive attitude will see us all into obamaslavery, guaranteed.
