Rasmussen: Obama “passion index” hits new low

posted at 12:00 pm on December 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama may have hoped that a resolution to the question on Afghanistan would improve his political standing.  Instead, on Rasmussen’s daily tracking poll “passion index,” he has plunged to new lows on two successive days.  Those who strongly disapprove of Obama’s performance now have 19 points over those who strongly approve, and his overall approval rating has dropped to 46%:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 23% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -19.

Today is the second straight day that Obama’s Approval Index rating has fallen to a new low. Prior to the past two days, the Approval Index had never fallen below -15 during Obama’s time in office …

The 23% who Strongly Approve matches the lowest level of enthusiasm yet recorded. Just 41% of Democrats Strongly Approve while 69% of Republicans Strongly Disapprove. Among voters not affiliated with either major party, 21% Strongly Approve and 49% Strongly Disapprove.

The flight of independents continues, in other words.  They’re more disillusioned than the electorate as a whole, with a -28 on the index and more than a 2-1 showing for strongly disapproving to strongly approving.  Among seniors, it’s -29, and even the under-30 crowd has him at a -2.  According to Rasmussen, Obama has also lost the middle class, noting that his weakest income demographics come from earners between $40K – $100K per year.

This sample includes one polling day on a weekend (yesterday), which normally would have given Obama a boost.  It will be interesting to see what happens by Thursday of next week, when they poll likely voters on three weekdays instead.

There is simply no one else who could have exerted such power.

John Thune seems to be starting to get some under the radar coverage. He seems to have the looks, mid west values and genuine respect of his fellow workers in the Senate.

Could also be a good VP pick for Palin?

tatersalad on December 13, 2009 at 3:00 PM

Thune is too RINO-y

Past that NO Senator should ever be elected President. They simply don’t have the skill set. A President MUST have executive experience. MUST.

The Senate is nothing more than a glee club, a debate society. To many “my friends” and “the gentleman froms” going on in there.

We are at war, we need a leader. No real leaders in the Senate. Just a bunch of debaters. There a real and serious reasons we chose Governors, not Senators, to be POTUS.

It was 50 years between Kennedy’s and Obama’s election. Neither worth a damn. With Obama’s epic failure, it’s likely we’ll never see another Senator elected POTUS again, and that would be a damned good thing.

2012 needs to see both the POTUS and V Potus come from the ranks of Governors. PERIOD.

seems to me that a lot of people on the right did not want Harriet Miers approved and demanded that the Republicans not support her. They also said that the President’s nominees deserved and up or down vote without bothering to say that only works if the president has an R behind his name. This is nitpicky.

Terrye on December 13, 2009 at 2:55 PM

See this is the problem. Yes I agree on an up or down vote as long as the opposition agrees as well. Since the dems did not give us an up and down vote why should we give them one? You think if they have no reprecussions for their actions they will not do the same thing again the next time they are in the minority.

If we want an up and down vote we must prevent the dems from getting an up and down vote until they agree that they will no long use the tactics they did in the minority.
It is called fighting fire with fire. And if the dems do not agree? Then Obama’s judge appointments stall in the Senate. Liberals do not gert appointed to life terms. That in gametheory is called a win-win.

By rolling over and acting as we want to be treated the dems have a green light to hold up every judge appointment of every rep admin from now on. That is called a lose lose. get along to get along

Unseen, the unfortunate truth here is Terrye is a moderate, a squish. They view the world from the squish, “my friends” angle.

Terrye actually thinks of Palin as part of the GOP!

Terrye, ask the corrupt Alaskan Republicans if she is part of THEIR GOP! They friggin’ HATE her!

Let me tell you how petty, and childish the Alaska GOP is, after she was elected Governor, the refused to put her photo and bio on their website, just out of spite!

Ask the corrupt national GOP if she is part of THEIR GOP. Don’t think so!

The fact is, Sarah Palin is NOT about parties. Like most of us, she sees them as, at best, a necessary evil. This is why she has put the GOP on notice that if they don’t get their act together, she may indeed run as an independent.

In the end, here’s the deal. The GOP is just as bad as the democrat/Communist party. They aren’t evil like the communists, but they are appeasers. They are all a bunch of Neville Chamberlains, when we need a party full of Winston Churchills!

The trick is to take OUR party back. To run the moderates out of power. Moderates are dangerous. They are weak. They stand for almost nothing, and would rather be loved, than feared. this is why we have a filthy lying communist president, and a filthy lying corrupt Congress.

Our political system has devolved into a two party system, and I’m OK with that. But what I am NOT OK with is a political environment where you can barely tell one party from the other. An environment that has seen both parties become more about getting and keeping power rather than doing our work for us, the work of the people.

More and more every day I am coming to the realization that we just need a good old revolution. We need a serious purge. We need serious reforms.

We may even need serious amendments to our Constitution. Amendments that GREATLY limit the federal government, and mandate term limits, for sure.

We need to amend the Constitution to reinforce states rights, and severely limit the government’s ability to usurp those rights.

But we have to elect leaders who will peaceably go along with this.

Frankly, Sarah Plain is the ONLY politician I have seen that really doesn’t give a damn about holding a title. She doesn’t lust after one.

It was as a private citizen, AFTER she resigned from the AOGCC that she made an impact, and took down the corrupt GOP, and her power now, as a private citizen, is undeniable.

We need many more just like her, but sadly she is an incredibly rare commodity. That of course, is also what makes her so incredible special.

The bottom line is the current GOP sucks, they just don’t suck as bad as the evil that populates the democrat/communist party. But not sucking as bad as the other guys is NOT an acceptable standard.

There are only a handful in the GOP that should be able to retain their jobs come 2010. Jim DeMint, Michelle Bachmann, John Carter, Jim Inhofe, and a few more. And I don’t know if either Senator is even up for re-election. But past those, and obviously a few more, the rest need to be shown the door.

We MUST clean house, Or America will never be great again.

I agree totally: we do NOT want another legislator in the White House! Your point reminds me of what John Adams said about Congress:

“In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress.”

They are a debate society. They go round and round, and the buck doesn’t stop with anyone there. Well, when it comes to executive power, the buck must stop with the president. I think that’s why the first president was a military man, General George Washington – they understood that they need a leader, not a member of the glee club.

BTW, your observation about squishes… I also suspect that a lot of women who object to Palin (on the right as well as on the left) are motivated by petty jealousy. They can’t bear to see a popular, attractive woman succeed. I’m afraid that’s fallen human nature for ya.

I am sorry to hear of the rampant unemployment in your family. It is not what any of us would choose for our families. I do love your attitude. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. This is a great lesson in the meaning of Christmas and as you said, you will all be together.
Our family had a similar experience and it was one of the most memorable Christmases we ever had. We all had jobs, but they were not good ones and for a year or so we had to scrimp and save until we got out of that financial hole.
Our Christmas tree was a pathetic version of Charlie Brown’s tree that we got on Christmas Eve because the guy at the Christmas tree lot practically paid us to take it off his hands. It was dropping needles like mad so we didn’t have it up for long. Our Christmas dinner was hamburgers because we could cook them outside as a special treat. My parents are gone now and my brothers and I always remember that Christmas more than any others that we ever spent together. We laugh about the tree and we still fondly recall the hamburgers as the best Christmas dinner ever.

atheling on December 13, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Thanks.

We’ve seen too many good and decent people go to serve in Congress only to become useless. It’s the nature of the institution. It’s all about debate and compromise. actually, to a point, it has to be. That’s the nature of the system, the job.

But being President is about leadership. You’re the CEO. It’s a completely different skill set. I honestly think a great President would make a HORRIBLE congresscritter.

A great President wouldn’t be content there. Their desire to lead, to actually acomplish something would be stifled.

This is why if a true leader takes a shot at Congress they either fail, or quickly lose those leadership qualities as they become part of that culture. They settle into the comfort of being the member of a club.

America would be a fool to ever elect one of these underachievers again.

Governors literally do the same job as the President, except they can’t declare war. (Hell, Palin has a leg up on that process, because of her unique C-I-C duties!) Governors make CEO (executive) level decisions daily, if not hourly. They submit budgets, they mange employees. Many states, like Alaska deal with world leaders, through trade agreements.

There is no better prep school, no better training academy for the presidency, than the governorship of a state.

My son keeps asking me, “Mom what was it like during Jimmy Carter?”. I laugh and say, “You’re living it”.

Even with the gas lines, etc., we learned to have fun. My mom drove a Chevy Vega and we got to meet our neighbors, play the radio really loud and exchange our gubmint cheese right in the middle of the street.

Americans have a sense of humor. And we need that now more than ever. A “Community Organizer”? “Really? LMFAO.

We needed this mistake. It’ll bring us all closer together and we will never make this mistake again. Lesson? Elections have consequences.

Obama actually polled 52.9% (53%) of the vote to McCain’s 45.7% (46%)for a 7.2% margin. That Obama is at 46% with Rasmussen currently and 48% with Gallup doesn’t suggest he is in major problem of gaining re-election but by the same token it doesn’t mean he is assured of it either in 2012 if the numbers stay this way. Obama is in no man’s land or in football terms he has fumbled the ball, thrown for 2 interceptions and essentially let his opponents (Palin and company) back into the game where it is now a legitimate competitive contest for the hearts and minds of America.

atheling on December 13, 2009 at 8:56 PM

What??? I have Palin on my Facebook for Chrisake, I gave money to her campaign, I voted for her.

All I ever said was that she is not the only reason that Obama is in trouble. It is not just about Palin, Obama has screwed up enough to get himself in trouble. And I said that while I liked her very much she is not the entire party, there are other people out there like Mike Pence and Liz Cheney who are making their voices heard. Even the GOP leadership is getting more boisterous.

And now all of a sudden I am acting like a jealous high school girl, because I don’t act as if the entire party is useless without her? I mean come on, that is just weird.

This site is for political discussion, that is why I come here–playing with trolls aside–we need to be less strident.

It does not come as any surprise to me. I never did like Obama. But you are right, people elected him. And I am not that smart, if I could see he was an idiot, then a lot more other people should have seen it too.

I know that I should watch it for educational purposes, but jeez o’ pete, it’s right before bedtime.

Key West Reader,
I feel your pain. In our small family, I lost my job, my sister lost her job and my niece’s husband lost his job and they have a baby on the way.

As for Obamoa’s plummeting poll numbers, it reminds me of the song Beyonce sang at the Inauguration Party, At Last.

HellCat on December 13, 2009 at 9:46 PM

I’m still thinking and hoping that the events of the last year have just been a very bad dream, so I’m concerned that watching that drivel before “bedtime” will give me nightmares on top of my nightmare.

I haven’t watched 60 min’s in decades. To those who have lost their jobs because of these eviro-lib idiots you have my sympathy. But believe it or not, the only thing worse than being laid off, is laying off someone who put their faith in you, and having to lay yourself off at the same time doesn’t make it any better.

I had 4 employees. That ends on Jan 1, all thanks to the AQMD and CARB here in socal; and Obie’s depression.

Welcome to Obamaville.

But don’t worry, Larry Summers has declared the recession is over and happy days are here again!

More seriously, the job situation sucks and everything this administration is doing is making the problem worse instead of better. It is by intent. The filthy lying coward wants high unemployment numbers to keep the masses dependent on big government handouts and programs. It is part of the socialism in a box that your state overwhelmingly approved of when they voted this rat bastard traitor into office. I know it doesn’t make your situation any less painful (and you have my sympathy and empathy) but it does my heart good to see that California, Michigan, and New York are in the vanguard of suffering states since they were so influential in pushing “hope and change” prior to the last elections.

I pity whomever comes in behind this jackass and has the challenge of fixing all the stuff that this criminal has screwed up.

What’s sad is that his own media people can’t seem to grasp that he is overexposed. They just keep trotting him out there thinking that the American people will be won over by his stilted cadences and his “unprecedented” awesomeness.
