Tiger: I’m quitting golf — temporarily

posted at 7:54 pm on December 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

Remember when he copped to “transgressions”? A bit more specific this time:

I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try…

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

I question the timing. Just last night, the UK’s Sun tabloid had this:

The Sun today revealed that Woods is ready to quit golf in a desperate bid to save his shattered marriage.

He told Elin he “will do anything”. And she has agreed to stay with the star for the sake of their two young children.

But she has given him the stark ultimatum: “It’s golf… or me.”

Elin has drawn up a strict list of rules for the world Number One to follow if he wants to win her back.

And the beauty, who would pocket up to $100million if she walks away, is insisting he puts their marriage and two kids before his golf career.

I haven’t been linking any tabloid stuff in Headlines but assume that you guys are following it in your own news-reading travails. If not, let me tell you: The sheer volume — and variety — of it that piles up in my RSS reader is astounding. It’s not just the typical “new details from Tiger’s mistress” celebrity scandal crap, either; it’s more women, every day, and ever more lurid accusations. Even allowing for the fact that some of it must be lies aimed at cashing in, one pro golfer went so far as to say, “This is no surprise to anyone who knows Tiger.” No wonder he can’t follow the Letterman blueprint of ‘fessing up, letting the dust settle, and then going back to work. The confession would take three days.

Exit question: How freaky would the details have to get before the world’s richest pitchman becomes poison to advertisers? If Marv Albert can come back from Bitegate, surely history’s greatest golfer will get plenty of leeway.

He’s staying with her because he doesn’t want to lose his endorsements which is where most of his money comes from. He’s not staying because of the kids because he always chose chasing pooter over spending time with them. It’s ironic when you think about it – everyone accuses her of staying for the money when it is Wood who is the one.

Imagine if the husband of a mega successful woman gave her an ultimatum to choose her job or her family.

But then going through a spouse’s phone to check on possible infidelity is a gross violation of privacy if that spouse happens to have two x chromosomes.

Tiger was paid $3 million as an appearance fee at one tourney this year. He does not need endorsement money. In fact, without playing the endorsements will dry up quickly. How many endorsements does Michael Jordan still do? Gates go up 50-100% and viewer watching goes up 50% when Tiger is in any tourney. Maybe this will be dented a bit by the scandal but people still will want to see excellence in action. Plus he wins around $10 million a year in actual tourney purses.

He just needs to pause a bit and look at that list of Nicklaus’s accomplishments on his wall. That has been his prime motivator for years and surpassing it all is within reach.

I never watch basketball but I watched Michael Jordan play, both live and on TV. Excellence sells.

Jeezus, I’m just fed up with the adoring public making up all kinds speculative scenarios, Tiger’s a traveling gambler, his liars dice game came up snake eyes, it had to happen.

He’s human, he failed, that simple.

The President is human too, he puts his pants on from the feet up just like any other man does and he’s at least as arrogant as Tiger is.

Said it before, ego is the enemy.

Who are you kidding? Women cheat at least as much as men do, they’re just usually a little more discrete and maybe not as much but they cheat for ego reasons too.

Tiger’s hiatus sounds, at least in part, as part of the public image spin control. What a guy, he is giving up that which he does so well for his lady.

I’ll be impressed if he is nowhere to be seen come Masters weekend, and even more so if he bypasses the US Open.

To take a hiatus now is not that hard for him. Yearly, Tiger plays one or two tournaments in the opening West Coast swing, the Buick in San Diego and the world cup match play. He plays a few in Florida in February and March to get ready for the Masters. So he is giving up maybe 5 or 6 tournaments in the first three months of the season.

What makes you think he is still going to get the kind of money for appearances? Or for speaking engagements? While what he makes would be more than enough for you and I, it’s no longer for him.

And yet somehow women keep falling for us.

Anyone see tonight’s Red Eye? Ann Coulter had the greatest line of this whole sordid affair in response to a clip from the latest self-proclaimed mistress’s interview — “I didn’t know Meghan McCain had an affair with Tiger Woods.”

Heart-ache?

Cylor on December 12, 2009 at 4:02 AM

Unfortunately, humiliation is typically the driving force behind this sort of contrition. As the sting of that humiliation and shame diminishes, so will the contrition, similar to ‘foxhole religion’.

This will probably end in a hostile divorce.

chalons on December 12, 2009 at 7:44 AM

Takin the little woman out on the boat there Tiger? You’d think it was Bush Sr. and Gorby going on a Chesapeake Bay secure talk.

Too bad Tiger couldn’t donate heavily to a nice charity for needy kids instead of blowing it on orgies. I have lost some respect for the kid.

Can you actually take a break from serial infidelity?

drjohn on December 12, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Ya might wanna quit sex temporarily too dude. Thats your friggin problem.

johnnyU on December 12, 2009 at 8:39 AM

GREAT! This’ll give him more time to go looking for more trashy blondes to fool around with. Having that pesky golf thing out of the way for a while will be a blessing.

A woman friend of mine once told me the main difference between men and women was simple: Men talk about it, women do it.

He won’t lose endorsement deals immediately, only because his sponsors don’t quite know what to do. They’re contractually obligated to paying him a fortune, and yet are having to pull his commercials and ads out of circulation.
He’s becoming a lewd joke, and that ain’t good. Can’t walk through an airport with those ubiquitous Accenture ads and not laugh at them these days.
It’s when his contracts begin running out that you’ll see companies deciding to “go in another direction.”

Case in point. Last night on Fox News’s Special Report, the panel consisted of Juan Williams, Nina Easton, and Charles K. Baier interrupted the panel to report on Woods’s most recent statement. Either just before or just after, Easton made passing reference to the serial affairs including one with a porn star famous for threesomes. That prompted Charles K. to mention that “this used to be a family show” to which they all laughed.

I have to tell you that if I’m a corporate executive whose primary pitchman is now renown for serial infidelity during the course of a three- or four-year marriage–including two pornstars–I’m definitely “going in a different direction.”

I do not approve of Tiger’s lifestyle, and there is a lot of heartache and pain now in that family, BUT, I wish the media would leave him and his family alone so they can deal with this in private. Why do we need to know all the details?

WyoMike on December 12, 2009 at 10:02 AM

When people begin to believe their own PR, principles, promises and committments just don’t matter. It is the self that matters and feeding that growing monster of an ego is a 24/7 job. Of course his marital vows meant nothing to Woods. He had an enormous self to gratify. Everything he’s doing now is damage control. None of it appears real or heartfelt (though none of us can really know his heart) and I certainly don’t expect him to stop diddling pretty girls, just be more circumspect in the effort. And I’m not condoning it. Just accepting that he is fatally flawed in this regard and if his wife stays with him, she must know what to expect in return for that lavish lifestyle he provides. What does that make her?

SKYFOX on December 12, 2009 at 10:28 AM

I’m just amazed by how immature he sounded in those e-mails and texts.

Lordy, I guess it proves that athletic excellence is just that and only that.

AnninCA on December 12, 2009 at 10:45 AM

I do find it clever and funny that many have re-labeled ‘Tiger’ as ‘Lion Cheetah’.

chalons on December 12, 2009 at 12:41 PM

“It’s golf . . . or me”???? Why isn’t it, “It’s your cheap, plastic whores or me”???And why would she want him to quit golf anyway? I realize he probably already has more money than he’ll ever know what to do with, but why would you want to put the brakes on the gravy train? That just doesn’t make sense.

NoLeftTurn on December 11, 2009 at 8:05 PM

Best advice I’ve read so far is that Tiger needs to go on Oprah and have a good cry. Oprah will then cry and all will be forgotten by the public. Elin might be another story.

Maybe that knee surgery he had was brought on by
entirely too much doggie-style.

Well, it’s not like he needs the money.

Dave R. on December 12, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Since when is a golfer an “athlete”? Sure he’s a great competitor, but he exercises about as much as a bowler or a pool player. Look who plays golf in your town, they wouldn’t be confused with Michael Phelps.

Chris_Balsz on December 14, 2009 at 1:33 AM

I know I am late tot he party on commenting…

Looks like Woods is whacking the media back. He is going to hurt them in their wallets (or man purses) for covering the scandal.

With $600M in the bank, the only golfing I would be doing would be on the courses I owned.
