Great news: “Avatar” reportedly super mega ultra left-wing; Update: Big Hollywood confirms

posted at 5:13 pm on December 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Ace, just doing my part to spread the word. You know what sounds like a fun Friday night? A three-hour lecture on imperialism starring Smurfs.

The political import of Avatar — and there’s no waving this aspect away because it’s right in your face start to finish, and especially in the third act — is ardently left. It is pro-indigenous native, anti-corporate, anti-imperialist, anti-U.S. Iraq War effort, anti-U.S.-in-Afghanistan (and anti-troop-surge-in-that-country, or strongly against the thinking of President Barack Obama and Gen. Stanley McChrystal), anti-rightie, anti-Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld, etc.

Yes, it’s very teenaged adolescent in its super-imaginative wacko visions and exuberant energy levels, but politically it’s pure Che Guevara (more the Motorcycle Diaries or Che-in-Cuba version than Che in Bolivia), Naom Chomsky, Hugo Chavez, Howard Zinn, Gore Vidal, Oliver Stone, etc. Cameron is an earth-hugging lefty from way back (the flagrant despise-the-arrogant-rich current in Titanic being but one example) so this should come as no surprise to anyone. I for one am cheered and heartened.

If Sarah Palin sees Avatar and then sits down and actually thinks about what it’s saying (which is always a dicey proposition, I admit), she’ll hate this movie.

It gets worse from there. Follow the link for quotes from James Cameron affirming the movie’s message plus a bonus theory by author Jeffrey Wells about, gulp, some sort of 9/11 metaphor lurking in the subtext. Seriously: Did anyone expect otherwise? Given the framework of the plot and the obvious allegorical intent — military invades planet to secure valuable commodity in the soil — what other way could this flick have conceivably tilted? The mercenaries heroically uproot the natives, seize the treasure, and blast them to bits while the audience cheers? C’mon. Once you know that the aliens are doe-eyed humanoids rather than screeching black reptiles with giant fangs, the die is cast, baby.

Exit question via Dave Weigel: Isn’t this basically the same plot as “Aliens” except with good guys and bad guys reversed?

Update: Bipartisan consensus at last!

Absent from the big screen for over a decade now, Oscar-winning director James Cameron returns armed with a reported half-billion dollars, a story he’s been desperate to tell for 15 years, and the very latest in cutting-edge visual technology. The result is “Avatar,” a sanctimonious thud of a movie so infested with one-dimensional characters and PC clichés that not a single plot turn – small or large – surprises. I call it the “liberal tell,” where the early and obvious politics of the film gives away the entire story before the second act begins, and “Avatar” might be the sorriest example of this yet. For all the time and money and technology that went into its making, the thing that matters most – character and story – are strictly Afterschool Special…

Think of “Avatar” as “Death Wish 5” for leftists. A simplistic, revisionist revenge fantasy where if you freakin’ hate the bad guys (America), you’re able to forgive the by-the-numbers predictability of it all and still get off watching them get what they got coming.

WashJeff on December 11, 2009 at 5:57 PM

If any of you want to get a little more insane today, take a stroll into the comments section of the Hollywood review link.

They couldn’t be happier to hear this movie comes from a Zinn/Chavez/Che perspective — even calling it the most patriotic movie ever made.

These are the people we’re dealing with. Patriotism to them is despising their own country, and wanting to replace its principles and values with that of anti-american communists.

Yet, don’t call them communists. Don’t tell them they hate America. No no no, that’s name-calling and fear tactics.

Because somehow hating your own country, its (ostensible) system of capitalism and the rest — and endorsing literal, actual communism and the monsters who employed it (Che, Castro, Mao, Chavez, etc. — is actually loving the country.

There is no reconciliation with these people. No benefit of the doubt. They want to destroy America and remake it in their leftist image. And they are doing a pretty damn good job of it.

jjraines on December 11, 2009 at 5:57 PM

The first thing one of my boys said after watching the preview was “Those ships look like my GI Joe copter.” Also, one of the bigger gunships looks very similar to the drop ship from Aliens.

Cameron stole quite a few ideas for his film.

Bishop on December 11, 2009 at 5:57 PM

I hope it fails. That should relieve him of some of the nasty, dirty, stinking, filthy corrupt money.

Monica on December 11, 2009 at 5:58 PM

Yep- Just as I suspected. Here is a sample of the critics take on this movie:

The detail, the depth, the jaw-dropping boldness of Avatar simply bowl you over.

A mostly emotion-capture movie featuring the Mother of all battles.

The King of the World sets his sights on creating another world entirely in Avatar, and it’s very much a place worth visiting.

It’s a world, not to give too much away, that Cameron clearly fully intends to return to and further explore. When he does, our bags are already packed.

ramrants on December 11, 2009 at 5:58 PM

I dunno…I think that’s taking it a bit far. All I know is I go to movies for entertainment. No matter what I spend my money on, lefties somewhere are gonna benefit. Your favorite theatre might be run by a righty…and by not going, you’d be taking $$$ out of his pocket too.

JetBoy on December 11, 2009 at 5:55 PM

The problem is, the theater owner might be conservative and he might be politically active. Cameron is a leftist radical, he is rich, and he is politically active (as proven by the mere existence of a propaganda piece like “Avatar”). I’m sure you can see the difference.

Most of the crap churned out by Hollyweird is left leaning. The fact that this fairy fantasy farce has a decidedly liberal slant doesn’t shock me.

Looks boring to me. Then again, I ain’t no “Lord of the Rings” type. :P

Yes…might, might not. But there’s a lot more peeps involved than just the “Hollywood Lefties” when it comes to any movie. Tons of people are involved. Marketing…Advertising…makers of film….CGI peeps…etc etc etc, who all benefit.

It’s just a movie.

If you even hated it, you’re out what…10 bucks for the ticket? I can live with that.

Avatar II is already being produced.

The Blue Cat People, after having won their independence, demand free healthcare and a low interest mortgage.

The evil Reaganburton Corporation tries to stop them, basically by creating an auto-immune deficiency disease to kill them and denying them the right to vote.

Bishop on December 11, 2009 at 6:04 PM

Well duh. I plan to forcefully ignore the political message and simply enjoy the effects.

I have two words for you: Power Armor.

I can see where you’re coming from there. Two of my favorite sci-fi things are power armor and mecha. Too bad the Starship Troopers movie (or as a friend’s wife calls it: Nazis in space) wasn’t nearly as good as the book. (Or really had anything in common with the book at all.) Heinlein’s power armor would be kicka$$ on the big screen.
Now if they just don’t screw up Robotech to much I’ll be happy.

Not holding my breath though…

YYZ on December 11, 2009 at 6:15 PM

Art can give you beauty. Art cannot give you truth.

I don’t know why the motion picture industry persists in putting political “messages” into their movies. I keeps me away, and many other people I know. Sure, it’s a good propaganda tool to use on kids, but not very effective in my opinion. Most kids grow up and gain some sense of reality.

Maybe we should raise the voting age back to 21. Repeal the twenty-sixth amendment. The voting age has been 18 for less than 40 years.

TTheoLogan on December 11, 2009 at 6:13 PM

I don’t think that happened. They did a super long and accurate biography of Che a few years ago and I was told he never committed mass murder. Since directors never alter the facts to fit their political views I think we are the ones mistaken. I mean, just look how accurate JFK and W were. :)

Sheesh…

C’mon people it’s a freaking MOVIE for crying out loud…

There’s no shortage of T.V. and movie productions that make villans of corporations, countrys, rich people etc etc…

If it’s just another evil military or corporation then those stories are a dime a dozen, I’m not going to get a political education from a stupid science fiction movie. You don’t watch Terminator for the high flying dialogue, it’s entertainment!

It seems like everyone needs a pet cause once in a while, the first Harry Potter stirred up a number of people who boycotted it because it was *evil* and taught kids all kinds of bad things (most of them never even read the books), but those same people had no issue going to see Lord of the Rings which has *Magic* in it.

I’m going to go see it for the spectacle, and if it turns out to be a lefty windbag of a movie I’ll get up and leave and ask for my money back, I’ve done it before.

I completely agree with you that the movie was terrible, but it was up front about it. They advertised it as a political movie geared toward the right. Avatar and most other movies are advertised as normal movies with a lefty message hidden inside. I have lost count on how many times I have started to watch a movie and then have to sit through mindless dribble about how evil conservatives are.

I think everyone here is complaining because we want a movie without a message or moral. Just tell us a good story with great acting, some special effects, a few explosions and maybe some boobs. That movie would make billions.

A quirk of fate. The networks used to switch the colors back and forth each election, and it was red-GOP, blue-Dems in 2000. After the recount fight, and the subsequent activism between left and right wing, the two colors stuck and have been the same ever since.

Its pretty much the same reason I grew weary of Star Trek The Next Generation – that show was one long Leftist fest. True, the original series certainly leaned Left but when it did a message (and you can see this in retrospect) it tended to be tagged on and not dwelled on/wallowed in. Usually the extent of ToS message involved Kirk and co laughing around the command chair. Not Picards lectures.

The Motorcycle Diaries was a very good movie, by the way. It was leftist for sure, but it showed how Che viewed the world and why.

When were movies and books required to show the “impartial and absolute” truth? They quite often only show “points of view”.

Aliens was directed by Cameron, and the dropship also looks very similar to the hunter-killers from Terminator, also a Cameron production. I’m thinking he retains the same prop designer for these projects.

Too bad. The cartoon the movie is supposedly based off of is not hard left at all. Me and my kids liked the cartoon a lot. I am not going to sit for 2 hours of Liberal lectures.

Sorry, Darwin. It was a real good movie in my opinion. I’d recommend it for an understanding of how Che’s view of the world developed. It was also cool to see all the parts of South America that I otherwise wouldn’t see, like the glaciers and stuff.

Jimbo3 on December 11, 2009 at 7:01 PM

Guys, why can’t we see this as Amerigo Vespucci Vs. the Native Americans, not Bush trying to “take over Iraq for oil.”

I will get it on netflix! Who the hell needs to pay for a movie other then netflix!?

Root for the evil imperialist empire guys.

It isn’t like I am going to go to it.

–I watched Moonlight in da Escanaba today. It’s about the trials of a hunter in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It’s available instantly (streaming) on Netflix. You might like it, upinak.

Ok, can someone please explain WTF he means saying that?

It’s a funny jokie because Sarah Palin is stupid.

Fair enough. Glaciers huh … must have been filmed before global warming hit.

(Che was still a sociopath)

Ohhhhhhhhh … now I get it. What if Sarah Palin turns blue and grows pointed ears … can she lead us in battle against the evil left imperialist empire?

darwin on December 11, 2009 at 7:06 PM

It’s a pretty good and involving movie. If you don’t like it, hell, it’s only a $1 wasted. (I’m not a conservative, by the way, just as a warning). But I thought it was a good movie.

One hopes that Avatar will be the new Ishtar.

Movies with lefty themes are designed to sway public opinion. That’s why they make them; for the agenda. Doubt me?

THE CHINA SYNDROME with Jane Fonda and Jack Lemon destroyed the Nuclear Power Industry.

I rest my case.

I don’t do streaming but I will look into it. Sounds interesting.

But Movies are entertainment. The only movies I will NOT get are political propaganda. Moore annoys me to no end.

So long as she becomes a registered Dem (and does a post-birth abortion on Trig) then that would work!

By the way, Motorcycle Diaries is available instantly for streaming through Netflix, if you have it, Darwin. (I just checked).

darwin on December 11, 2009 at 7:12 PM

I think the Netflix streaming stuff is really cool (but I’m a geek, anyways). Get a $250 reconditioned computer or a PS3 and hook it up to your TV. Pay like $12/month to Netflix and be able to get a movie or two a week in the mail plus 10000+ movies instantly and cut your cable movie package out.

Something to make the next cold, dark four months more bearable, perhaps, upinak.

Jimbo3 on December 11, 2009 at 7:14 PM

Heh, I knew what that movie was going to be full of ever since I saw the preview. This comes as no surprise to me – leftist thinking and unreality suit each other well.

Folks spend gobs of money on this dreck while Atlas Shrugged languishes in Production Hell, and nobody’s even making Honor Harrington.

Sekhmet on December 11, 2009 at 7:29 PM

DIP$HIT Cameron is a fraud who wouldn’t dare tell viewers how many innocent human beings have been murdered in the past century in the name of SOCIALISM. History books (except mass murderer-apologist Zinn) are replete with accounts of all the death and destruction at the hands of the world’s most “progressive” socialists; Lenin, Stalin, Marx, et., al.

Mass murderer and PATHOLOGIC LIAR Che Guevara (HE WAS NOT A PHYSICIAN!) is exactly the sort of dolt stupid chumps like Cameron idealize.

It figures Avatar is a “cartoon”.

Lefties aren’t mature enough to deal with life’s realities, so they bury their heads in a cartoon world hoping for a good outcome.

What a waste of oxygen.
