Got 404s? Update: And missing trackbacks? Update: Fixed?
posted at 7:20 am on December 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Some commenters have been reporting problems since yesterday that clicking “submit” gives them 404 errors and their comments don’t get posted. Obviously, it’s not affecting everyone, but it’s affecting dozens of Hot Air commenters, who can comment in the Headlines threads but not in the main blog. The Hot Air crew is trying to figure out the problem and a solution to it. Thanks for your understanding and patience.
Update (AP): A number of readers e-mailed yesterday to say that they’re able to comment in Headlines, just not on the blog. If that’s true in your case, leave a comment on this Headline item telling us which OS and browser you’re using. It’ll make it easier for our tech guys if reader data is aggregated in one place.
Update (Ed): I’m bumping this to the Top Picks just to remind people we’re still working on this and to keep the Headline link alive once it scrolls off the page. I’m also noticing, as have several e-mailers, that trackbacks aren’t working either. The tech staff knows about it and will work to resolve it.
Update II (Ed): Looks like we may have solved the problem, which was in a faulty line of code that disrupted the database. Test your comments here if you’ve been having the problem, and let us know if it’s not resolved.

Blowback

On a completely different subject:
“Vulnerable nations at Copenhagen summit reject 2C target
Alliance of Small Island States say any deal that allows temperatures to rise by more than 1.5C is ‘not negotiable’ ( John Vidal, The Guardian)”
They won’t allow temps to rise more than 1.5c? I mean seriously they actually think they have the power to actually do that. The crack pipe is strong with these people.

I don’t have a case of the 404′s–thankfully. But those 405′s are mighty itchy. I think they make a cream for that.
robblefarian on December 11, 2009 at 8:19 AM
I am a capitalist, pure and simple. Where there is a demand, there is money to be made.
How about we set up a cooperative of commenter intermediaries. Say someone like Grow Fins wants to post a comment, but he gets a 404, but some other fellow can post comments. Grow Fins would make a request here, in the headlines, and the fellow with the working comment function can re-post Grow Fins comment.
Now here’s the best part. We can start selling advertising within our intermediary or pass-along comments. For example, I can contact the authorities at those awesome companies that tell you how some nubile young wife discovered a way to whiten her teeth, and BINGO, I get a few bucks by including that ad in my pass-along comment.
Basically, those of us with working comments hire ourselves out as commenting slaves, or whores as the case may be, and in return we get the awesome ad revenue.
It’s capitalism at its best! It’s a win-win!

Comin’ in from South America via Firefox. If this posts, I’m fine.
404 Errors? :::[shakes head in exasperation]:::
Great opportunity for my typical rant – that:
- Programmers are like politicians in that they want to be all things to all people, unable to say ‘no’ and thereby creating some really abominable kludges;
- Since I am (overseas) often working across poor or crowded connections, I really loathe seeing the progress status bar stuck on “Waiting for (some-ad-company-with-a-bunch-of-animated-graphics)” that is going to take forever to load;
- If I were in charge, wannabe tyrant that I am, I would mandate that all software devolpers and web-page designers be forced to work across dial-up. I can’t help but think that that would dramatically improve software design.
Having had my say, shall I hit ‘Submit Comment’?

Ed, the ads are brutal. Not from a content perspective, they just make it impossible to open HA from a blackberry (wasn’t always that way) and from any desktop that is not running a relatively recent version of ad blocker. Ads are good b/c they pay the bills, but ads that block the customers from getting in your virtual door are bad, no?

No 404s, but cursor jumps and “quote” and I think once “emphasis” HTMLs inserted into text I was typing. With the cursor jump I would find my self typing in other portion of the comment. At first I thought maybe it was something I had done, but it happens only in the HA comment box and happens, or has happened frequently. Also, some of my comments have been lost in the ‘sphere.
I don’t know if I got that malware thing. I’m pretty lax about that kind of thing–been lucky, I guess.
Live in Delaware.
I have that “Ad” wait, too, and I’m on a DSL line. (My wife worked for the DSP and had access to NCIC for various and sundry purposes.) I rarely have to wait for most sites to load their content, but then I have to wait on the ads because the ad server can’t handle the traffic.

HotAir is my homepage. Have been hit twice on this site with malware and backdoor trojans, not including the third attack from the bad link to Politico the other night.
The malware and backdoor trojan walks right thru my antivirus, firewall and all the rest of the spyware tools I’m running. The malware is also changing registry keys which is almost impossible to fix without professional help.
