Got 404s? Update: And missing trackbacks? Update: Fixed?

posted at 7:20 am on December 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Some commenters have been reporting problems since yesterday that clicking “submit” gives them 404 errors and their comments don’t get posted.  Obviously, it’s not affecting everyone, but it’s affecting dozens of Hot Air commenters, who can comment in the Headlines threads but not in the main blog.  The Hot Air crew is trying to figure out the problem and a solution to it.  Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Update (AP): A number of readers e-mailed yesterday to say that they’re able to comment in Headlines, just not on the blog. If that’s true in your case, leave a comment on this Headline item telling us which OS and browser you’re using. It’ll make it easier for our tech guys if reader data is aggregated in one place.

Update (Ed): I’m bumping this to the Top Picks just to remind people we’re still working on this and to keep the Headline link alive once it scrolls off the page.  I’m also noticing, as have several e-mailers, that trackbacks aren’t working either.  The tech staff knows about it and will work to resolve it.

Update II (Ed): Looks like we may have solved the problem, which was in a faulty line of code that disrupted the database.  Test your comments here if you’ve been having the problem, and let us know if it’s not resolved.

Blowback

It happened at least four times yesterday afternoon into yesterday evening.

Did the programmer leave cryptic comments in the code about how he couldn’t quite get the result he was expecting from the data?

Schadenfreude on December 11, 2009 at 12:35 PM

Its adware. Not quite a virus, but it tracks your usage and sends feedback to the ad servers so they can target you based on learned preferences.

uknowmorethanme on December 11, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Unfortunately, it’s not just adware that’s jumping around here. I’ve picked up the “antiviruspro2010″ trojan twice on this site. And it does damage and is real pain in the butt to fix. Some people have posted that they actually had to do a reformat or bought new computers.

And I am not the only one that’s picked up the exact same thing here.

Finally the nightmare is over. While I was unaffected by this glitch in a logical sense I was no less distraught. And yet, somehow, I endured through it all.

Image what it was like for me to be immune from the code bug while so many of my HA pals were suffering.

I felt powerless. I tried to drown my sorrows by the usual methods, beer, wine, meds; but to no avail. So I took my pent up aggressions out on friends and family members.

Only if I could have summoned the courage to join you in solidarity by voluntarily not posting for the duration. But no, I am weak, and yes, you can say it, selfish. Only time now will rid me of my shame.

Your nightmare is over while mine still lingers. /self obsessed drama queen mode off.
