Press to Obama: How do you like your premature Nobel?
posted at 8:48 am on December 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Apparently, the press has finally caught on to the fact that President Obama hasn’t done much other than breathe to qualify for the Nobel Peace Prize. In an unexpected moment of humility — from a man who canceled a lunch with the king of his host country — Obama agreed with them, for a moment, at least. Jake Tapper has the details:
At his press conference in Oslo, Norway, with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, President Obama was asked by a local reporter about criticism that his pending Nobel Peace Prize is “premature” and how he can use the prize to “make some of your good intentions materialize?”
“Upon receiving news of the prize it was a great surprise to me,” the president said. “I have no doubt that there are others who may be more deserving.”
And, in fact, Obama — who has not been known as a tireless advocate for American exceptionalism — reminded the press that America has been a force for good, for justice, and for freedom for more than just the length of his presidency, emphasis mine:
“So on a whole host of initiatives that I’ve put forward this year, some of which are beginning to bear fruit, the goal is not to win a popularity contest or to get an award — even one as esteemed as the Nobel Peace Prize — the goal is to advance American interests, make ourselves a continuing force for good in the world. Something that we have been for decades now,” he said.
“And if I’m successful in those tasks then hopefully some of the criticism will subside, but that’s not really my concern,” he concluded. “And if I’m not successful then all the praise and the awards in the world won’t disguise that fact.”
That’s an excellent, and somewhat unexpected, reminder to the world of our service to the global community. Well done, Mr. President.
On the other hand, Norwegians are vocally unhappy with what they perceive as a snub from Obama. Nobel winners usually have a lunch with King Harald and host the opening of the Nobel exhibition of their own accomplishments. Obama has instead declined Harald’s invitation and the exhibition (hat tip ex-pat Monica T) in this translation from Norway News:
Progress Party leader Siv Jensen thinks it is bad that U.S. President Barack Obama does not want to have lunch with King Harald. The Norwegian people agree with her in a poll which in fact made for VG. According to the poll said 44 percent of the population that it is rude of Obama to drop lunch with the king of Norway. 34 percent thinks that Obama’s decision is entirely fair. But even more responding that he drop the Nobel concert. 53 percent believe it is rude to do such a thing, while 27 percent understand that he does not set aside time to listen to, among others, Donna Summer.
Moreover, says 48 percent of the respondents that Obama should set up the press conference and interview with CNN.
Progress Party leader Siv Jensen is upset.
I think it is bad that he was cancelling the royal house. It is a central part of Norway’s management system, and he should have respect for the monarchy, “said Jensen.
Obama embarrassingly bowed to Emperor Akihito and Saudi King Abdullah, but can’t take a meal with Harald? The Nobel committee must be regretting their award as Obama snubs the exhibition, too. After all, they were the ones that honored him, and now Obama doesn’t have the time of day for them. Norway News quotes a public-relations expert as saying that it’s in keeping with a low-profile approach to the award, but that’s very obviously the opposite of what the Nobel committee hoped to get from their selection of the inexperienced Obama.
Maybe the Pulitzer committee should take note.

The speech was better than I’d expected. He couldn’t resist taking a few shots at Bush and he ignored the second Gulf War as a “just war”, but he did say some truths about using force for good purposes. The audience must have been a bit taken aback to be told that the US has been using its military to protect Europe and many other places for 60 years and deserves some credit.

No, their award wasn’t to honor him, it’s purposes obviously were to (a) make a statement about G.W. Bush, (b) put Obama in an uncomfortable position, and (c) snicker at America.

Really? I look at is a comment from a man who in one breath will bash America and blame his predecessor for everything and then in the next take the credit and receive an award that was built upon all the hard work of his predecessors and America’s sacrifice. He doesn’t believe in American exceptionalism and accepting the award is ridiculous. He’s the kid in the back row who copies off his neighbor’s paper and then takes credit for the A.

The world press may be miffed, but their attacks are in general from the left, and no doubt stem from Obama’s Afghan troop decision as much as from his snub of protocol for the presentation ceremony.
(And as far as his pointing out that America has been a force of good in the world, I wonder how much of an influence Dick Cheney’s jibe on Hannity Tuesday night — in saying Obama doesn’t believe in American exceptional ism — had in making the president and his staff hyper-sensitive to how the Nobel award was going to play back home. The downplaying of the award and Obama’s remark seem to indicate the White House finally figured out what the Nobel committee’s anti-U.S. power game was here and at least in this one instance, decided not to play along and please the Europeans ahead of not annoying the majority of Americans by giving another “U.S. influence and military power sucks” speech.)

Well, Obama’s “war” talk, certainly made his hosts uneasy, and he certainly delivered an excellent, no apologies, review of America’s realpolitik in the 20th and 21st centuries. But of course the president’s rhetoric may be just that. As we have seen he will say anything to win, and deliver something quite different once he’s won.
Anyway, I loved to see the toffs squirm.

Ed, you are being WAY to kind again.
Let’s take a quick look.
“I have no doubt that there are others who may be more deserving.” He didn’t say there are others who ARE…
As for the “reminder to the world of our service to the global community” part, let’s just remember even the excerpts of the speech are full of the word “I”.
Heck, I couldn’t even get through the second sentence of the transcript: “I receive this honor with deep gratitude and great humility,” YOU LIE!
Obama knows nothing of personal humility.
He will, and will soon however.
The Lord will bring this man to his knees.
As goes Obama, so goes America.
However, it could be a month before Obama returns to the US. Evidently his head cannot fit into Air Force One at the moment…

He was on too early for me to be able to stomach watching his speech. But I kept it on and caught bits and pieces. Decades? Try 2 centuries. America has always been a beacon of hope and freedom to the world.
Just a side thought: When he was talking about the civilian losses in WWII being more than the loss of soldiers- was he including those that died at the hands of Hitler and the Third Reich?

If that was truly the case, he would have politely refused it. But, no, he did accept it. And he accepted it in an insulting manner to the host country. Actions speak louder than words- in this case the actions said, “I won. Oh, and you all suck and aren’t worth my time.”

The speech was awful and how Ed Morrissey can praise it is beyond me. It is arrogant, and Obama actually seems to compare himself to Hercules and his “labors.” The rest of the speech is pathetic pacifism, with such platitudes about war never achieving peace. Obama boasts about ending “torture” and closing Guantanamo Bay and trashes America.
But Ed Morrissey also praised Obama’s pandering speech to Muslims in Egypt, so I guess it is not surprising he would like this one, too.

Europe still hasn’t gotten over the fact that the USA saved their collective asses in WWII after they rolled over and played dead for Hitler. Nor have some, especially the upper-crust lefties in Scandinavia and Great Britain, gotten over the fact that Hitler wasn’t able to finish off all the Jews in the world. They have been trying to get even with us ever since. George Bush just drove them over the edge with his overt Christianity and his policy of going after terrorists and their supporters.
Still very puzzling that Obama snubbed King Harald. I would say that it reflectes an American aversion to European monarchies, but he was all too happy to meet with Queen Elizabeth before he had even finished moving into the White House.
Perhaps even David Axelrod is beginning to see that Americans don’t like their President playing “dig-me” on thr world stage every other week, especially while we are still mired in a horrible recession at home.

What continent or nation has not been conquered by others in the last two thousand years? Most areas have and that does not excuse the bad things the USA has done in the past. I’ll give 0bama this much – he was between a rock and a hard place this morning, accepting the NPP while simultaneously deploying 30k troops to Afghanistan, and his way out of the predicament was to remind all those rich, spoiled Norwegians that their affluence and lifestyle results from and now once again depends on Americans waging war. There were a lot of uncomfortable snooties listening to that speech.
Then he had to go and ruin it by ringing the climate change alarms. Take note – ‘climate change’ is replacing ‘global warming’ cuz they’re not going to stop just because they can’t show the planet getting warmer anymore. Now it doesn’t matter if the planet’s getting hot, cold … it’s climate change now, it’s all your fault, and you’ll just have to allow your income to be redistributed to Botswana to pay for your sins.
