Chris Matthews: Palin’s not so stupid that she actually doubts man-made global warming, does she?

posted at 8:49 pm on December 10, 2009 by Allahpundit

A little piece o’ comedy gold from last night’s “Hardball” in honor of the new Rasmussen poll showing just 37 percent of likely voters believe global warming is man-made compared to 47 percent who think it’s driven by long-term planetary trends. Having read the transcript at Newsbusters, I’m not sure how Matthews’s own position differs from Palin’s. He believes the climate is changing — and so does she. He believes man is a contributing factor (“I think the industrial age we live in, the last hundred years has had an effect”) — and so does she (“I believe that man’s activities certainly can be contributing to the issue of global warming, climate change”). What she doesn’t believe is that Copenhagen’s going to address the problem in any meaningful way, which is almost certainly correct but undermines the left’s agenda, thus warranting the snideness here. Come for the wisecracks about “troglodytes,” stay for Matthews criticizing her for the way she signs books. Really.

Instead of sneering at her, this time could have been spent discussing the political pressures scientists feel to conform to the consensus or the risk of confirmation bias infecting a discipline whose conclusions are about to cost the world trillions of dollars of wealth. That’s no merely theoretical worry, either: We have enough overlap with Ace’s readership that I trust most of you have already seen his post about the data at one climate station being, ahem, “homogenized” to show warming instead of cooling, but read it now if not. Frankly, it’s a better use of your time than the clip. Click the image to watch.

That doesn’t read like an affirmative belief but rather a cautious, dare I say bit of scietifuc skeptism leaving an opening that she might be wrong. Which is more then we can say of the “scientists” pushing the notion.

I’m fairly sure Mattwews would give an affirmative statement of believing it.

“I think the industrial age we live in, the last hundred years has had an effect”

This mentality is almost like the Left’s version of “the pathetic fallacy”. Just because humans may be effected by industrial chemicals and pollutants doesn’t mean the entire ecosystem is or is on any relevant scale or that the negatives of this effect outweigh the positives. When a single volcanic eruption can send out more of the allegedly harmful chemicals than a thousand factories, it’s hard to get worked up about our effect.

AP,

Steve McIntyre has found some interesting things in the CRU emails. He was one of the expert reviewers on that report.

IPCC and the “Trick”
Steve McIntyre, posted on Dec 10, 2009 at 6:50 PM
Much recent attention has been paid to the email about the “trick” and the effort to “hide the decline”. Climate scientists have complained that this email has been taken “out of context”. In this case, I’m not sure that it’s in their interests that this email be placed in context because the context leads right back to a meeting of IPCC authors in Tanzania, raising serious questions about the role of IPCC itself in “hiding the decline” in the Briffa reconstruction.
Relevant Climategate correspondence in the period (September-October 1999) leading up to the trick email is incomplete, but, in context, is highly revealing. There was a meeting of IPCC lead authors between Sept 1-3, 1999 to consider the “zero-order draft” of the Third Assessment Report. The emails provide clear evidence that IPCC had already decided to include a proxy diagram reconstructing temperature for the past 1000 years and that a version of the proxy diagram was presented at the Tanzania meeting showing the late twentieth century decline. I now have a copy of the proxy diagram presented at this meeting (see below).

The emails show that the late 20th century decline in the Briffa reconstruction was perceived by IPCC as “diluting the message”, that “everyone in the room at IPCC” thought that the Briffa decline was a “problem” and a “potential distraction/detraction”, that this was then the “most important issue” in chapter 2 of the IPCC report and that there was “pressure” on Briffa and other authors to show a “nice tidy story” of “unprecedented warming in a thousand years or more”.

The chronology in today’s posts show that the version of the Briffa reconstruction shown in the subsequent proxy diagram in the IPCC “First Order Draft” (October 27, 1999), presumably prepared under the direction of IPCC section author Mann, deleted the inconvenient portion (post-1960) of the Briffa reconstruction, together with other modifications that had the effect of not “diluting the message”. About two weeks later (Nov 16, 1999) came the now infamous Jones email reporting the use of “Mike’s Nature trick” to “hide the decline” in a forthcoming WMO (World Meteorological Organization) report. Jones’ methodology is different than the IPCC methodology. Jones’ trick has been described in previous posts. Today, I’ll describe both the context of the IPCC version of the “trick” and progress to date in reverse engineering the IPCC trick.

The rest is here.

Although I know why she has to do this, she does lose points with me for this. I consider being “open” to the possibility that man is contributing to climate change “politics as usual” which is the antithesis of everything else Palin is.

George Orwell must be turning over in his grave at the political take over of science. Did not the Nazis dehumanize the Jews by comparing them to subhuman life forms? Seems like dropping the troglodyte comparison is very similar.

“trog⋅lo⋅dyte

1. a prehistoric cave dweller.
2. a person of degraded, primitive, or brutal character.
3. a person living in seclusion.
4. a person unacquainted with affairs of the world.
5. an animal living underground.

This is about gaining power over every aspect of our lives not the truth of the matter.

Yes and about 99% of journalists believe that not only does global warming exists but that it’s entirely man’s fault for releasing a totally naturally occurring gas normally associated with respiration in every air breathing animal on the planet. Breathing can’t possibly elevate CO2 levels. Volcanoes can’t possibly affect those said levels.

As far as libtards are concerned, it is my contention that their brains are directly responsible for the increased levels of carbon dioxide which obviously to them is warming the planet to the point that increased weather disturbances, polar and glacier ice is melting causing the seas to rise. It’s all in their warped imaginations.
