PPP: Obama 50, Bush 44

posted at 5:27 pm on December 9, 2009 by Allahpundit

The sample’s skewed — just 47 percent claim to have voted for Obama last year versus 45 percent for McCain — but even so. Only a svelte six-point lead for mankind’s savior over the Bushitler, scourge of the Enlightened? His final approval rating was 22 percent.

Dude, is this Cheney 2012 thing happening?

Perhaps the greatest measure of Obama’s declining support is that just 50% of voters now say they prefer having him as President to George W. Bush, with 44% saying they’d rather have his predecessor. Given the horrendous approval ratings Bush showed during his final term that’s somewhat of a surprise and an indication that voters are increasingly placing the blame on Obama for the country’s difficulties instead of giving him space because of the tough situation he inherited. The closeness in the Obama/Bush numbers also has implications for the 2010 elections. Using the Bush card may not be particularly effective for Democrats anymore, which is good news generally for Republicans and especially ones like Rob Portman who are running for office and have close ties to the former President.

Effective or not, they’ll be playing that card up to and during The One’s very last hour in office. Click the image to below to watch the latest example, captured just this afternoon. And do skim the crosstabs at PPP, which are fascinating. Head to head with The One, Bush pulls 25 percent of moderates, 39 percent of independents, 48 percent of men — two points better than Obama — and 53 percent of whites. Gee, I wonder if the 39/52 split on ObamaCare has anything to do with all that. Exit question per the Gibbs clip: Didn’t Obama whine just yesterday in his speech about the economy that people need to stop playing the blame game?

Update: A fair point raised in the comments: The numbers on Obama vs. McCain don’t necessarily mean the sample’s skewed. It could mean that people have so soured on The One that they don’t even want to admit having voted for him anymore.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the sample’s skewed. In many very famous polls in the mid ’70s, it was found that almost as many people claimed to have voted for McGovern as for Nixon, and Humphrey beat Nixon by a fairly comfortable margin.

It may well be just another sign that the big “O” brand is tarnishing.

After talking to some co-workers the other day, the problem isn’t that people disliked Bush. The problem is they bought the MSM’s lies and daily beratings. I was told in no uncertain terms that Bush got us into an endless war in Iraq with no plan and at least we now had a guy who thought about things first…maybe… (yes, maybe… they were very uncertain about that)

BUT, they didn’t blame Bush for the economy.

Not everyone that voted for Obama likes to admit it anymore. Last year I got in a heated discussion with a guy that always voted republican but said was voting Obama because he really grew to dislike Bush. Talk to him now, and he pretends that conversation didn’t happen. Heck, maybe he did change his mind in the final weeks and voted McCain. All I know is that if he did vote for Obama, like I suspect based on the October convo, he sure as heck doesn’t want to admit it to me.

So maybe there’s a scientific reason for narrowing that margin a little bit.

JetBoy on December 9, 2009 at 5:42 PM

Even when he is no longer President, George W Bush provides more leadership to the military of our country than any President since Eisenhower. The visit to the Ft Hood wounded days after the massacre, and without cameras or PR mention at all, no pomp or fuss, makes George W Bush more popular with us than anytime since the Thanksgiving in Baghdad. The idea of a US President entering a truly hostile war zone to feed the troops….. in secret…. is as much Leadership with a capital L as you will ever see in your lifetimes, people.

If you don’t miss him, then you just don’t understand Leadership.

voters are increasingly placing the blame on Obama for the country’s difficulties instead of giving him space because of the tough situation he inherited

Bush inherited Al Qaeda and a 9/11 plot that was in its end stages. He also inherited a dramatically depleted military and an intentionally weakened national security structure.

Odd how that never gets referenced.

Oh, and Obama, as part of majority party in the 2006-8 Congress had a hand in giving himself the situation he “inherited”

As for his point – such as it was – about McCain’s chief economist; so what? He can’t be wrong? During the campaign Team Obama sure didn’t think he could be right but, then again, he was disagreeing with them wasn’t he?

What laughable to me about the Gibbs clip is at the end where he starts blaming the Bush Administration for fiscal irresponsibility for not being able to “pay” for Medicare Advantage and the Iraq War and in the same breath essentially claims that Obama is wholly about fiscal responsibility because he will show that he can pay for everything.

The statements made by the EPA, the actions by “whatitsname”, the outright bald faced lies, the condecension, divisiveness, pettiness, classlesness, cluelesness and the blatant disregard for the security and liberty of the American people, clearly draw a picture of something I’d rather not see.

Based on my small sample, President Bush is still being blamed for the economy.

My investment advisor a few months ago quipped that “Bush never vetoed a single spending bill…never met one he didn’t like.” He suffered for that comment and is about to see a liquidation. (Don’t you love a half true talking point?)

A lady at a local service station was crediting Dear Leader for getting gas prices down from $5.

Meantime, even the right speakers on Fox fail to mention the weaknesses of the Porkulus and how The One clearly owns the present misery due to the back loading and corruption in the bill. Even if you grant that the bloody thing is working at all, The One’s promise of “shovel ready” projects is a mystery about now.

IlikedAUH2O on December 9, 2009 at 6:26 PM

Every day something dark emerges from this administration. From the outright lies, to the accusations and finger pointing, the corrupt favoring of Unions and cronies, to the funding/bailout of Hillary Cliniton, to the dithering in Afghanistan, to attacking legitimate news outlets and declaring war on them, to dividing this nation into colors and classes.

Ignoring the plight of the people of America, the administration throws grand parties and our leaders spit in our faces, call us names, deride and demean We the people who allow them the seats of power.

I am angry and I am weary. And for the first time in my life, I am afraid of my government.

Step down, Obama. You are unqualified, divisive, clueless, classless, a bully of sorts. We do not care for Chicago politics, strong armed tactics, attacks on our prior elected Administrations, pointing fingers of blame when you ran so hard and so long to earn the position that we entrusted you to take.

You, Obama, are a failure. We desire peace, prosperity, equality, and a future. You are clearly unable to deliver anything but pain, misfortune, generational theft, mistrust, malfeasance, dereliction of duty and you are the most devisive figure that our generation will ever know.

The WH press corps needs to think more quickly on its feet. Gibbs offered too many opportunities for follow-up questions or refutations with facts to miss putting him on the defensive.

The Bush tax cuts generated more tax revenues, business growth, and jobs than does the fear and instability created by ObaMao’s spending policies and efforts to tax anything that stands still.

The Heritage Foundation bar graph demonstrated the contrast in the two presidents’ deficits deficits, real and projected. The graph included the costs of both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The deficit was decreasing prior to the late fall meltdown.

That Gibbs can claim that the president is saying that “there is no longer a free lunch” should have generated a burst of laughter in that press room.

I am sick of the media, pollsters, politicians, and Obama himself using the, “tough situation he inherited,” excuse.

Obama was the smartest man in the room who made his bones telling us how much worse things were then was being reported — then the media gladly joined in.

He was the one who knew, not only how bad it was, but how to fix it all.

we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on earth. This was the moment—this was the time—when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves and our highest ideals.

So stop it already — he was so smart he clearly knew how bad things were — and if they were worse then he stated then clearly was an unqualified blowhard idiot.

If not then he claimed he knew how to fix it — so fix it already and stop whining about it!

I never believed that 25% approval number. Not in the sense that the polls were lying. But in the sense that of the 75% who disagreed, 15-20% of those people hated the liberal aspects of his presidency. Things like the push for amnesty, the bailouts. But that 15-20% would still have preferred Bush to Obama. So the fact that 44% say they would want Bush today over Obama is really 25% + another 15-20%.

Makes perfect sense and nobody should be all that shocked.

Justify that stupidity and waste of funds, Gibbs.

As much as President Bush raised my blood pressure with the spending and the push for amnesty, he was always solid. I miss a White House message machine that was operative beyond a four to five hour window.

The event of the century: Gibbs head explodes implodes. (Think submarine beyond its depth limit!)

Give Obama 6 more months and the gap will be 50/44 the other way.

OK wise guy. I have been looking at Mr. Gibbs for some time.

His head exploding? Yea, right. I have been proactive on this issue.

If any of you can identify what part of the Press Secretary’s body is his head, please contact the guy below for a job. I tried to get the guy to work on Mr. Chris Matthews but got no acknowledgement.
