Obama at new low in Quinnipiac survey

posted at 9:30 am on December 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Hide the decline!  Barack Obama’s job approval rating dropped to a new low in yet another survey, this time in the respected Quinnipiac survey.  Obama can only muster an anemic 46% approval overall, with 44% disapproving and 10% on the sidelines.  His domestic-agenda priority now has even lower support, and Obama is seriously underwater on a number of issues:

American voters give President Barack Obama a split 46 – 44 percent job approval, his lowest ever, and both the health care reform package that he wants Congress to pass and his personal rating on handling health care now win support from less than four in 10 Americans, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Voters disapprove 52 – 38 percent of the health care reform proposal under consideration in Congress, and they disapprove 56 – 38 percent of President Obama’s handling of health care, down from 53 – 41 percent in a November 19 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh- pe-ack) University. …

“It’s a good thing for those pushing the health care overhaul in Congress that the American people don’t get a vote. At this time, supporters are down 14 percentage points,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

To provide a little more context for that, Obama won his election in November by half of that spread.  That was not considered a close election, either.

The downward decline has picked up speed, too.   It may be hard to recall this, but just six- months ago, Obama had a 59% approval rating, with only 31% disapproving.  Two months ago, he still had a 50/41 split.  It’s worse among independents, though.  He’s underwater by 14 points, 37/51, an eleven-point plunge from last month’s 43/46.  Six months ago, independents gave Obama a 27-point gap to the good, which means he’s flipped 41 points in just six months among this key group.

Over that same six-month period of time, Obama has had a 37-point flip on the economy, too: he’s 41/54 now, as opposed to 57/33 in June.  He’s been underwater for most of that same time on health care, the last three months in double digits, so the 18-point deficit at 38/56 now is more evolutionary than sudden.

The combination of results from various pollsters shows that Obama has entered a free-fall on his approval ratings.  Robert Gibbs can blame Gallup all he wants, but these results vindicate Gallup and show that his boss has a real problem.  People have begun to realize that this emperor wears no clothes.

The only true support he has is among the ultra ivy league left, minorities and poor.

His true approval rate is about 35%. It won’t get below that, because the above groups will never abandon him.

tatersalad on December 9, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Come on, Ed. Quit using the raw data. You need to homogenize the numbers to factor out all the mistakes. Once you do that, Dear Liar’s approval rating is 190%! It would be higher, except for the lingering stench on the presidency by George W. Bush.

Hate to disagree since we’re really just debating the rate at which Obama has stunk but, as I’ve said before, this president has been consistent at one thing for the past year: losing support.

Look at the RCP average, especially the spread. Obama has fallen slow and steady all year. Two big rates of decline do show up around late February and July/August: which correspond to TARP and TEA parties, respectively; both are probably comprised of fleeing independents. Meaning, should ObamaCare pass by Christmas, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a third cliff in the data, taking him to the low 40s.

Code Red Rally Tuesday 1pm Dec 15th US Capital
It’s time we all stop pretending that what is happening with this Obamacare debate is about “helping the uninsured” or “fixing the healthcare system” or “giving the people what they want.” It’s about none of those things. Its about amassing as much power in a central government as humanly possible. Its about wealth redistribution. It’s social engineering at its absolute worst.

The American people must take this political system back from those who have hijacked it in one of the most abhorrent power grabs that we the voters have ever seen. It’s the holiday season so the Democrats are counting on you to be otherwise occupied and too busy to stand against their massive expansion of government. Let them underestimate us again just as they did last summer. Let these unrepresentative politicians proceed with their legislative chicanery and self-righteous grandstanding. We can expose them and confront them in the classic American spirit–a public gathering on their doorstep. On December 15th at 1 pm, we will remind Pelosi, Reid, Schumer et al. that they work for us and not the other way around. We will demand that they follow the will of the people, not dismiss and degrade it by putting future generations into a deficit dungeon. We will put every politician who supports this travesty on notice: enjoy your remaining time in the U.S. Capitol because we’re coming for your seat.

The American people will not forget those who turned their backs on us and
voted for a bill that they hadn’t read and which will do nothing but ensure that one of the best healthcare systems in the world is compromised.

With respect, Ed, I don’t think this metaphor is really accurate. The problem Obama has is that for months he was hiding behind a fog of “moderation” which has been obliterated by his radical leftwing policies. Now, at last, the independents can see exactly what clothes this emperor is wearing — and they don’t like what they see at all.

cozmo on December 9, 2009 at 9:38 AM

Definitely. It’s conceivable that a politician who’s accepted his or her impending electoral defeat is a lot more dangerous than one who’s desperately trying to hang onto their seat.

But let’s say for sake of argument that the Dems, realizing their days are numbered, decide to ram through Obamacare, amnesty, crap-and-betrayed, and massive tax hikes(or at least a few of them). They’d be out of power for a generation. Even blue states would turn red(or at least a shade of reddish purple) overnight.
