Shock poll: Huckabee’s numbers up since last month?
posted at 8:14 pm on December 8, 2009 by Allahpundit
Just a teaser from PPP, but stunning enough that it’s worth mentioning now.
Maybe Palin will have to think about that third-party run after all.
Our monthly look at the 2012 Presidential race, due out Thursday, will show Huckabee’s favorability at 35/35, pretty much unchanged from 36/37 on our November poll. And not only does it show him once again as the Republican who comes closest to Barack Obama, but it also shows him coming closer to Obama than he has in any of the previous nine monthly polls.
Does that mean he’s getting a free pass on the Washington cop killings by an inmate whose sentence he commuted? Probably not. I’m sure that would be a massive liability if he did get into the 2012 Republican field, and used effectively against him by his opponents. But it’s a good reminder that the vast majority of Americans do not live and die by the 24 hour news cycle. Huckabee’s numbers haven’t changed because more than likely few voters who didn’t already have their minds made up about him are familiar with his connection to last week’s tragedy.
Is that the answer, that news of the Clemmons clemency simply hasn’t trickled down to most voters? Huck mentioned it on his show, and it’s been bantered about enough on conservative talk radio that you’d think there would be a downturn of a few points among Republicans, at least. Palin tweaked him about it on Lars Larson’s show just a few days ago, in fact: “I don’t have a whole lot of mercy for the bad guys. I’m on the good guys’ side.” And yet, he’s untouched. Not that it matters terribly, given that his primary opponents will beat him over the head with it, but based on this, his favorables are more resilient than I would have guessed.
Then again, this is PPP we’re talking about. Remember “Hoffman by 19″? Exit question: Er, didn’t Palin tell Rush Limbaugh just a few weeks ago that America’s not ready for a third party?

His numbers should be fine when people realize he didn’t do anything wrong in this instance. And I’m not talking all the pardons/clemmencies, just this one.
I understand 4 cops died, but no fault rests on the Huck. maybe more people realize that than come here and that’s why his numbers are fine.

Allah, that’s not very commonsensical of you. Listen, we need to focus on commonsense conservatism because Americans have commonsense, and right now, our leaders in Washington lack that commonsense that true commonsense Americans want to see in Washington. So do your part and help support commonsense Conservatism and stop bringing up quotes from the past. It’s irrelevant that Sarah Palin contradicts herself on a daily basis. Focus on those common, commonsense issues that bind all true Conservatives, like Sarah Palin, together.

Huck is the quintessential RINO. Big government, big spending, compassionate, progressive, yet Christian-thinking . . . er . . . conservative.
Yuckabee.
Anyway, the only way out of this dystopian nightmare is if the world ends in 2012. Let’s cling to that possibility.

Most Americans are not as hardcore as Malkin on the right and Olbermann on the left. Most Americans look at the situation, the facts, and how Huckabee handled himself over the last week.
Huckabee showed leadership in how he handled the Clemmons tragedy. He took responsibility for his actions, he took the criticism from the pundits, he laid out the facts, he expressed empathy for the victims and their families, and he showed that he stood by his convictions.
Isn’t that what all y’all are complaining about Obama?
Obama does not take responsibility for his actions-he blames Bush for everything even though he was a Senator who voted on many of the issues he complained about.
Obama does not take criticism well from his opponents. Today, Huckabee took criticism from Palin and agreed with some of which she said.
Obama does not lay out the facts, many are still wondering what the healthcare bill is all about.
Obama did not express empathy for the soldiers killed in Arkansas, the prolife supporter who was murdered. Don’t forget how Obama did a shout out to Joe when he was suppose to be telling the nation about the victims at Fort Hood.
Obama has yet to stand by his convictions on the Afghanistan war, his support for the gay community, his desire for a public option, and his beliefs in socialism.

People really need to get over this anti-PPP thing. I know Hoffman supporters feel burned, but polling a single district is incredibly difficult and often very inaccurate, which is why it’s almost never done. Otherwise they’re one of the more reliable pollsters, as well as one of the most transparent.
Besides, by the logic that they’re forever tainted by that last poll, it would mean they oversample conservative Republicans.
All that said, I think the story simply hasn’t gotten enough play. It’s sure not being kicked around on Fox News as much as it would be were this Romney or Crist who made the bad move, let alone as if he was a Democrat.

Right now, I don’t think he is very popular with that particular group.
pilamaye on December 8, 2009 at 8:58 PM
If you notice there is something really strange about Huck’s F/UF. By their own admission they will unveil them to be 35/35 on Thursday and in November it was 36/37. And in October it was 33/29 and in Sept it was 38/36.
Notice how high the ‘unsure category’ is for the last 4 months of polling. And after the Clemmon’s incident 30% of respondents aren’t sure about Huckabee, which is 3 points higher than November. Simply I’m not buying it.

Folks at HA complain often that Palinistas are drinking ‘the koolaid’ but why hasn’t there been more examination of Huck’s supporters doing that: I think this poll could be evidence of that.
technopeasant on December 8, 2009 at 9:04 PM
I am sure a lot of people give Gov. Huckabee the benefit of the doubt and it is hard to deny that there was plenty of blame to go around on the killer of the police officers. That said, there is no way that if he were the nominee that the loyal opposition wouldn’t go crazy with the info that this didn’t happen once but twice and that Gov. Huckabee granted clemency over one thousand times. Five murders and untold cronyism insinuations will make it an easy campaign.
Cindy Munford on December 8, 2009 at 9:05 PM
The more likely answer is that once people found out he got 100+ years for theft when he was 16, they would’ve probably granted him clemency too and see this as the non-issue it really is.

NoStoppingUS on December 8, 2009 at 9:13 PM
The only time that I heard Palin talk about “moderate Republicans” is in an interview with Rush Limbaugh on Nov 17 in which Palin claimed what she likes about the GOP is that we can “duke it out in the primaries, conservatives and moderates, that competition makes our product that much better as a result.”
Isn’t it ironic that after Palin said this that there was word afoot that the GOP might invoke some sort of “purity test”. Apparently Palin is not for it and quite frankly by her statement is quite open to moderate Republicans becoming engaged in the GOP primaries and eventual 2010 contests if they prevail.

It’s not such an obvious call when you see a kid get 100+ years for stealing. Is conservatism a reasonable, realistic philosophy that exists in the real world, or is it one that claims all punishments are always deserved?

Sporty1946 on December 8, 2009 at 9:29 PM
“Then again, this is PPP we’re talking about.”
1. Not “then again”, “then” in the first place.
2. This is more about Obama declining.
3. Polls are meaningless right now.
4. The clemency thing is a secondary scandal — connections hard to make. Had anybody heard of Willie Horton before Dukakis ran for president?
5. Huckabee’s persona is — or will be — exactly wrong
for 2012. The country by then will be exhausted by slick male ego.

Here are the overall F/UF of Obama and the Big 3 in November:
F UF NOT SURE
OBAMA 49 46 5
HUCKABEE 36 37 27
PALIN 40 49 11
ROMNEY 30 39 31
COMMENT:
So what PPP is saying that no Republican is above 40 F in a poll taken supposedly of an accurate cross-section of voters that shows that Obama is below 50%. Are we really supposed to believe that so many folks are still undecided and don’t know their own mind.
By the way here are most recent F/UF for the Big 3 by Rasmussen:
F UF NOT SURE
HUCKABEE 58 30 12
PALIN 46 49 5
ROMNEY 49 38 13
Notice a completely different set of numbers and the much lower not sure percentage for each of the Big 3.
I know PPP polls ADULTS while Rasmussen polls likely voters but WOW-what a difference in results, especially with Huckabee. By the way both polls were conducted before Clemmons.

After a reasonably uneventful term with a comfortable (familiar) president, the country may be ready to try its luck again with a minority.

I don’t apologize for anything Governor Huckabee does. He takes responsibility for his own actions. He had respect for the power of clemency bestowed upon him, so he carefully reviewed the facts of each case. Rather than do the politically expedient, CYA thing, he did the right thing. Which lead him to deny 92% of clemency requests. This isn’t a weakness. It’s one of the strengths that made him a better governor. And it’s one of the qualities that people respond to when they are polled.
