Report: Senate Democrats drop the public option
posted at 9:23 pm on December 8, 2009 by Allahpundit
In favor of what, you ask? Good question. They’re not saying until CBO scores the plan, but it’s safe to assume that the Medicare “compromise” will figure into it. The details aren’t important right now anyway. Just know that, in the span of about five hours, Reid and company have set up not one but two separate death struggles with their pals in the House.
A thumbnail sketch from Politico:
The broad outlines of the deal had been discussed for days and would include creating a new national health plan administered by the federal government that would offer insurance policies offered by private companies…
By Tuesday evening, the group was no longer considering opening Medicaid to people with incomes 150 percent above the poverty line. It faded as a realistic option amid concerns among moderates and many governors that it would put too much of a burden on state governments, which pick up a portion of the coverage costs.
Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), who is still being wooed by Democrats, expressed strong skepticism toward another key element, the expansion of Medicare to people between 55 and 64. She said she was concerned the bill would rely too much on government to fill gaps in insurance coverage that the private sector should handle…
The Medicaid expansion was viewed as a trade-off for liberals who were disappointed that the public option was falling out of the bill. An expansion of Medicare is still under serious consideration because it’s easier to manage the costs by controlling who can “buy in” to the program.
House liberals Jerrold Nadler and Jan Schakowsky promised lefty Greg Sargent earlier today that they wouldn’t roll over for the Senate and were skeptical of the compromise plans coming out of there. Quoth Nadler: “The House is not going to be dictated to.” Exit question one: Which side caves? Exit question two: On a scale of one to 10, how fiery will nutroots outrage at the Senate’s betrayal be tomorrow?

rob verdi on December 8, 2009 at 9:26 PM
They need Snowe or Collins if Nelson actually sticks to his threat to vote no on cloture.
At least both Snowe and Collins have first-hand knowledge of what a mess Dirigo Care has been in Maine.

If Obama goes to the House and says “My presidency and your future depends on this”, they’ll cave.
Okay, “Your future and my presidency..”
SteveMG on December 8, 2009 at 9:28 PM
I hope the GOP has the sense (yes, big hope) to introduce an amendment dropping the individual mandate.
It would probably fail like the rest of theirs, but it would be good to see Dems on record as forcing the American people to buy something.
Wethal on December 8, 2009 at 9:29 PM
This is irrelevant. It doesn’t matter who actually offers the insurance plans, private or public entity. As long as the plans are administered by the gov’t, they will set the standard for what must be included in any plan. Your current $300/mo catastrophic coverage plan with a 10k deductible won’t cut it anymore – it must have offer abortion coverage and lbgt conversion therapy, whether you want it or not.
Mr. Pickles on December 8, 2009 at 9:29 PM
Libs do not worry about that. They figure they figure that they can just add those unemployed people to some social welfare program role and turn them into Democrat slave voters.
Holger on December 8, 2009 at 9:29 PM
That’s easy. The House caves. All they have to do is get their foot in the door right now. They can swing the door wide open at a later date.
SouthernGent on December 8, 2009 at 9:29 PM
Furthering my point, Reid was just quoted as saying public option isn’t dead.
Enoxo on December 8, 2009 at 9:30 PM
Snowe or Collins will buckle after Obama calls them and gives them thrills up the leg with his airy rhetoric. They’ll pronounce history called and vote in favor of this, hoping to “continue the national discussion” and promising to keep tabs on the outcome.
Or the “pro-life”/conservative left will buckle after putting on some show and receiving promises of support/money for pet issues.
I don’t trust any of them.
amerpundit on December 8, 2009 at 9:30 PM
the trial balloons have been floated. The rage against the machine has been evaluated, and the dogs will now salivate when the bell is rung. The pot of gold will be put just a little further down the road and the road to victory will be paved with gold.

As if all the dropped items won’t be thrown back in one minute before the vote is taken; the dems know what price will be paid if they fail on this.

Wethal on December 8, 2009 at 9:32 PM
Modesty aside, I thought this might happen and wrote this in July on the sheer stupidity that the Democrats have put themselves and the nation through:
On the off chance that no deal is possible, (a slim but growing possibility) expect some type of legislation expanding s-chip or greater access to Medicaid, which is currently in the works anyway, much to the ire of the countries governors.

ExSubNuke on December 8, 2009 at 9:35 PM
With how far all of the moderates have gone with this whole thing, I can’t see a “compromise” happening. It’s all a stall tactic to get the whole thing passed. They have the numbers and vulnerable dems are going to walk the plank. I bet they’ve been guaranteed admin spots that are farely high level if they get voted out. THIS is the end game.

Pray for the Republic.
johnsteele on December 8, 2009 at 9:42 PM
I think that all they’re trying to do at this point is get the bill to conference, where they can rewrite it however the House wants it, since the Senate won’t be able to block it then.
JohnJ on December 8, 2009 at 9:42 PM
If they drop it, it’ll be for a public option by another name.

Can someone tell me what we’re paying for if not a “public option” (which will lead to socialized medicine)? I mean, whether it’s the low estimate of $1.2 TRILLION, or the other estimates of $3 TRILLION and $6 TRILLION… I can’t for the life of me understand what we’re getting for that money?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not for socialized medicine… but I haven’t heard what else we’re buying with these trillions? Anyone have any idea?

we are getting a mandate and we get to cover our kids til they are 27, while we work til we are 78 and they gut our Medicare
in my glorious Demness, this was my number one issue, thus my original support of HRC. What these neoprogressive wankers have done is ruined it utterly and made something that will actually HURT the middle class, RAISE costs (on individuals nd states) and LOWER quality
the ins cos are getting millions of forced customers with the mandate that Obama railed against HRC for supporting in our primaries, but HRC had it linked to the opening of the Federal HealthPlan to all of us and opening state lines for comeptition
this is a clusterfark
when Obama met with Billy Tauzin and big Pharma skated and Daschle was doing the dealing I knew the bill was destroyed
Daschle and \Team Obama nastily referred to their grand health care rollout plan as ABC Anything But Clinton. fxxkers.
as we get mandated and fined and services get cut , Medicare Advantage first which ironically serves the poor but the poor dont know they even have it, well the pain starts 4 years before the crappy benefits under their plan
so everyone will be good and pixxed
between Obamas anti capitalist economic spend and tax tax is coming, policies, and his pathetic apology tours and arrogance, they have IMO destroyed the Democratic brand for years to come. many of we blue collar middle class types loved the Clintons, even Kudlow called him Regans third term and Art Laffer voted for Big Dawg too
GROW THE PIE!! Dont steal my pie!

So, if no public option~how is the government going to give illegal aliens their free healthcare?
HornetSting on December 8, 2009 at 9:59 PM
Not that I care, but for Reid this change would seem an interesting Profile in Courage, considering his talk about abolition and healthcare:
The Majority Leader Yesterday: Until every drop of blood drawn by the
lashneedle shall be paid by another…for it will be said “the judgments of theLordCongress are true and righteous altogether.”The Majority Leader Today: The Migration or Importation of such
personsinsurance policies as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight…Oh, the humanity! What happened to that last measure of devotion, Harry? What ever will the netroots do? Wherever shall they go?
On a more serious note, this, naturally, is just an attempt at getting a foot in the door and browbeating for more later. I hope they on the left understand that approach is getting as old as the blatant attempts at statism.
Horatius on December 8, 2009 at 10:04 PM
I only ask because there was NO enthusiasm (10% turnout) to fill the murderers seat in MA. If the Left are not motivated to vote because of stuff like the public option being dropped…

Weren’t there a few leftie senators who wouldn’t vote for the bill without the public option? Siegel from Vermont, maybe?whitehouse from ohio? Boxer?

cubachi on December 8, 2009 at 10:10 PM
As always, with the Democrats, don’t listen to what they say, watch what they do. There is no way that, during these meetings behind closed doors, they’re not planning a way to get everything they want and try to make it look like they didn’t realize they were getting everything they want.
I don’t know how they’re going to do it, but with the press we have, they will certainly be able to say anything, even if it strains credibility, and get away with it. The only network that will call them on it is Fox.
NEVER, EVER TRUST THE DEMOCRATS TO DO THE RIGHT THING!

Dropping the Public Option is the only way this gets past cloture in the senate. Once that is done, they will add whatever crap they want to back into the bill when the “differences” are resolved between the house and senate bill. After that they don’t need 60 votes, just a simple majority…at least that’s how my grandpappy explained it to me on his death bed…right before he said;

Not good enough/ Kill the bill.
The Progressives decades old strategy is one of incrementalism. They are always moving forward even if it’s only one inch at a time. Recall where SCHIP started? How does that compare to where it is now?
They will drop the public option now only to come back for it later. And the morons in the GOP still haven’t caught on to their strategy. They are afraid to really fight for limited government and content to trim around the edges of the Marxists programs.
Supporting this bill accepts the premise that the Demos approach is the right one. It legitimizes the illegitimate.

DerKrieger on December 8, 2009 at 10:28 PM
60 votes are not needed on whatever is voted out of conference–only 51. As I stated on last night’s thread on health care here, the congress critters voting for any bill in the Senate is voting for a public option–whether or not it is in the Senate version of the bill.

Will be interesting to see how much of this can rolled back in three years; my fears are not enough of it…but with unemployment and underemployment still likely to be high, it’s going to be one helluva turnout not only in 2010, but in 2012 as well.

agmartin on December 8, 2009 at 10:42 PM
Yeah. Harry Reid was going through the motions only. There was never any way a public option would get through the Senate. I think Lieberman voting to allow the debate to proceed to the floor was really doing what he could to kill the bill. The Dems would have to get 60 votes approving the removal of the public option, else they start over by sending it back to committee. Lieberman, you glorious bastard!
It’s questionable that the Dems can get 60 votes to remove the public option. It would be jolly fun to see Republicans opposing the removal of the public option so as to prevent any bill from passing. Ahhh

Over 1,000 heads exploding at Daily Kos
Dail Kos is covering the same issue dealt with in Allahpundit’s post but their title is Breaking News: Senate Dems Drop Public Option. What I find fascinating about the Daily Kos coverage is that the over 1,000 commentators on the post are dumping big time on Obama and the Democratic party for the what they consider a sell out by Obama and the Democratic party.
Many of the commentators are claiming they will leave the Democratic Party over the news of no Public Option while many others are claiming they will now become Independents.
I have never seen such a loath fest by liberal Democrats on Obama and the Democrat party as is now occurring in the comment section of that article.

Why are they willing to lose the elections next year over this? There is more here than meets the eye. They are completely unresponsive to public opinion. They have something up their sleeves. And what ever is really going on it isn’t good for the American people.
The entire Democratic Party is crooked.
I didn’t used to believe that… but after seeing how they behaved this year. And how they completely ignore the corruption of ACORN and all their own members…
When a Republican is dirty the party kicks them out. Dems promote them.

We have a new example to point to when we use the term “convoluted”.

They are people who can’t be pleased. Even if they get everything they want they still hate. Because that is their identity. They are haters.

I am ashamed to say that I had the thought today that I hope the economy doesn’t improve… I’m very sorry all you out of work people. I’m sure I get some bad Karma for it.
I just want these thieves out of my government so bad.

I’m amazed at how long it took them to get to this point. The public option was always a non-starter and they all knew it. It would burden future generations the way Medicare currently does.
So now that he’s about finished with this process, he finally gets to the starting point of debating without a public option.
No matter what they do, they don’t now nor will they ever have enough money to pay for it. And they don’t propose solutions that would cost ZERO dollars (TORT reform).
