McChrystal: We can’t defeat Al Qaeda without catching Bin Laden

posted at 8:53 pm on December 8, 2009 by Allahpundit

The whole clip’s worth watching but skip ahead to 2:55 if you’re pressed. This was the most interesting line from a day of testimony otherwise devoted to expressing confidence in Obama’s strategy and insisting that, timetable or no timetable, he will indeed ask for more troops later if he thinks they’re required. Which they well may be: Karzai chose today of all days to let the world know Afghanistan won’t be able to pay for its own army for another 20 years.

McChrystal’s point is that so long as Osama’s free to inspire, there’ll always be some soft-headed jihadbot willing to take up his cause. Which may be so. But isn’t the perennial argument against executing these turds that it’ll only make martyrs of them? Thanks to the Internet, Bin Laden will still be doing plenty of inspiring long after he’s gone (assuming he isn’t gone already). Also, why acknowledge this when he knows that anti-war types will hold it over his head? It’s Bush’s “dead or alive” redux: Even if he pushes the Taliban back, doves will yell that the mission’s a failure by his own yardstick because we’ve failed to knock out Bin Laden. Gates says we haven’t had good intel on Osama’s location in years. How likely is it at this point that we’re ever going to take him out?

Beyond all that, it’s odd to watch a guy who’s been told to “degrade,” not “defeat,” the enemy in the field talk about “finally defeating” an international movement like Al Qaeda. If the White House doesn’t believe in victory over the Taliban, surely they don’t believe in victory over AQ, do they?

One man is not key to defeating evil, its a movement. What is key is sapping the spirit of the enemy to where they don’t dare mess with us…sadly we don’t have grown ups running things, I think this was a foot in the door ploy, so that the set in stone time table is set in slow drying cement.

I am grateful for Gen. McChrystal’s perserverance in seeking and obtaining additional Af-Pak troops over a president who only understands cut-and-run.

But I don’t know how it can possibly work under the existing ROEs, which the general himself has imposed. According to those I know in the theatre and some of the in-theatre commenters here, those ROEs are almost as restrictive as those imposed on the police department in San Fransisco.

You can’t win a war, provisionally, for God’s sakes.

Sorry if its already been said but, there has been some commentary about about the military going a little bit rouge of late, using conveniently timed “leaks” ala the 40K troop request etal. Could this be McCrystal doing a little push-back against the degrade vs destroy? That until we follow the rat bastard chain of command all the way to Osama himself, the job will be yet undone.

After Gates’ statement yesterday emphatically saying there won’t be any more troop requests, McCrystal’s counter today could certainly be considered insubordinate.

Just a litte food for thought.

And yes, I expect there are a lot of Dems who would just like this to go away. Especially those who could lose their seats if they vote for it.

Wethal on December 8, 2009 at 9:24 PM

If catching Bin Laden means cutting off all the routes in/out of Afghanistan and Pakistan that the terrorists use, then yes. It’s more than just catching Bin Laden. Besides, IF they catch OBL, will the Obama administration treat him like KSM?

I wonder if McChrystal is reminding the public of Obama’s campaign mantra that Bush should have caught Bin Laden and that Obama would get the job done. McChrystal just raised the bar for the inept, dithering Obama to follow up on his pledge.

(I’m not holding my breath on Obama to do that, but do expect McChrystal to be under the bus soon.)

conservative pilgrim on December 8, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Another thing about the surge—the original request was 80k to 40k troops, 40k being the minimum. The media talks as if 40k was the benchmark and Obama did the military a favor by granting 30k. It’s all smoke and mirrors with Obama.

Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter degraded communism. Reagan defeated it.

Mojave Mark on December 8, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Beyond all that, it’s odd to watch a guy who’s been told to “degrade,” not “defeat,” the enemy in the field talk about “finally defeating” an international movement like Al Qaeda.

Since there has been nothing but disarray, indecisiveness, and outright ignorance coming from the Obama White House on Afghanistan, it is no wonder that we are getting mixed messages.

McChrystal is in a terrible position of trying to relay confidence and a consistent message about the mission when the Commander and Chief is not even on the same page as his Secretary of Defense or Secretary of State.

Behind the scenes I am sure it is worse.

With Rahm and Valerie running the show, the ineptness and disorganized manner of handling this strategy by Obama combined with terrible ROE’s is sure to hit our troops like an eighteen wheeler of unmitigated disaster.

The faster Obama and his Chicago bubble of cronies shuts the he!! up and lets our Military do what they need to do and how they need to do it the better.

I think maybe bringing Osama up may be a way of reminding the public why we are there and maybe trying to use it as a rallying point to improve public support.
According to a poll noted earlier, 58% approve of Obama’s surge plan so maybe this is directed at the people in the gray areas since his hard left will never support the actual defeat of an enemy.
It is pretty obvious that taking out Osama will be a big moral boost and propaganda tool for us but will certainly not stop Al-qaeda,they will fill the void and move on.
No one is more aware of this than our Military so this seems like more of a PR move than an actual event that will show success or victory in Operation Enduring Freedom.
Afghanistan will have to achieve some of the same goals as Iraq for us to claim success which our Military is also more than aware of.

If Osama is still alive, than I like most everyone else, would love nothing more than to see his head held up high by an American Soldier while he yells out “How’s that Caliphate working out for you a$$hole!!!”..

Baxter Greene on December 8, 2009 at 10:16 PM

First of all, the admin is pushing this BS about bin laden being in Afganistan which is as full of sh!t as their withdrawl non-sense. I swear these b@stards think we’re so stupid.

Second of all, killing or getting bin laden won’t do anything to defeat al-qaeda. It’s a symbolic victory, nothing more. I want us to get the SOB, but it won’t stop AQ. The admin might be stupid enough to think al-qaeda will just fold up and call it a day if bin laden was proven killed; not gonna happen.

Both McCrystal and Gates should resign. They’ve looked like two chickens with their heads cut off since O’s speech.
Patraeus can’t possibly believe that a time line (which was BAD!! in Iraq, but well, not-so-bad in Afgan) is a good idea. McCrystal and Patraeus are just being good soldiers for the CinC.

I get a strong feeling that when this is all said and done 20-30 years from now, Pat-Mc will both say ‘yeah, the strategy was flawed’.

Who seriously believes that Bin laden is in Afgan? I personally think he’s in Iran. But, let’s not make a case for doing anything about THAT situation, right, Mr. President?

If it wasn’t so serious, it would be a joke.

B Man on December 8, 2009 at 10:52 PM

While I disagree with the notion that finding Bin Laden is vital to defeating Al Queda the larger issue I have is the concern that the left has gotten to McChrystal. Look at recent statements. He says he needs a minimum of 40k troops and a year otherwise all is lost. Now Obama is sending him 30k troops by the end of that year. Yet McChrystal now says he perfectly fine with that. Obama is now setting up clear and finite timelines for retreat and surrender. McChrystal the grizzled general is perfectly fine with that. Now he’s trumpeting the left’s catch Bin Laden mantra that gives them the free reign to abandon Iraq and Afghanistan. Don’t know what threats, bribes or other forms of coercion they used but the Obama administration has effectively silenced an inside critic. Hopefully General McChrystal proves me wrong.

chicagojedi on December 8, 2009 at 11:03 PM

Is McChrystal like the next Colin Powell or something?

Dr. ZhivBlago on December 8, 2009 at 11:06 PM

Watching Mc now is like watching Warren Buffett on CNBC a year ago. What he was saying he couldn’t possibly be believing himself.

A year later, Buffett admits things haven’t gone like he expected.

That’s Mc down the road. He should have said 30k isn’t enough. He should have said a timeline is wrong. I give this a year and if it turns out as bad as I fear, they WILL resign or be fired.
O certainly won’t take the blame for casualties going up, (what ROE does the Taleebahn follow again??) so guess who does take the blame.

Patraeus certainly deserves much better then this. I hope he would have some guts to say “hey, Mr. President, this isn’t working”, and leave.
The savior of Iraq deserves a better CinC then this joker.

This myopic decision would be like saying we’re going to capture/kill Hitler and his personal henchmen while completely ignoring the fact that Nazism was taking over the rest of Europe. If these dimwits picked up a Quran, they’d realize the agenda of ISLAM is global domination.

Islam was born in violence, spread by violence and is sustained by violence. Muslims have slaughtered 270 million people, destroyed countless civilizations and looted their financial and intellectual treasures, enslaved their populations in the dark ages by turning them into muslims. That’s what happens when you build a religion around a psychopathic, mass murdering, child-molesting, warlord and enslaver like Mohammad.

Our elites are thinking they are fooling us by making a big show of going after the Taliban and Al Qaeda, when in fact they’re just a small piece in a vast jigsaw puzzle that is Islam. The truly dangerous muslims are the “moderate” (non-violent) ones gaining political power in the West and working to destroy our democracy from within. By the time our military will be celebrating victory in Afghanistan, muslims will be declaring victory at having conquered all of Europe.

Assuming of course by then Iran hasn’t nuked us already. Hey elites, this is a world war, Islamic terrorism/jihad is just one tactic in a grand strategy of our destruction/subjugation. Focus on their goal, not just their tactics. Learn from history, muslims have been repeating this same pattern of invading advanced civilizations and conquering them for centuries. History proves the only time infidels like us defeated them was when they became as ruthless and as bloodthirsty as muslims are.

Proving the Bin Laden is already dead or catching/killing Bin Laden would be nice, but no one should think for one moment that as soon as he is gone Al Queda will disappear.

And Al Queda is not the enemy, it is all terror groups! Any group that seeks to alter any policies by killing/attacking civilians needs to be killed. Not just Al Queda. There was that other nut who was in Iraq who left Al Queda and started a new terror group. We cannot forget this. Or in Obama’s case, we need to publicly explain this to him and hold his feet to the fire.

Of course he is going to say we need to kill Bin Laden. I mean really, what else would he say?

An acknowledgement that political targets won’t hugely affect the military threat.

The vaunted “surge” in Iraq followed some hardcore street fights in Ramadi and Fallujah. Everybody likes to say we were losing Iraq in 2006, but we’ve skipped that stage in Afghanistan. I think we need a few months of having the Taliban standing their ground and letting the “street” see that killing American infantry ends with 50 rounds of 155mm to your civic center. THEN walking back into the rubble and playing Mr. Nice Cop might work.

He won’t be employed for long, McChrystal is forcing their hand, as he should. HE WANTS TO WIN.

Mr Bin Laden is surely alive and active, even if not entirely healthy.

He won’t die until either another person conspicuously arises as am inspirational champion in the cause of the Arabian Barbarian, or until another century or two has passed. I think its quite possible he will never die.

Too many people have vested interests in him being alive.

I personally think he’s in Iran.

Why Iran?

If he hasn’t already become maggot food, it really wouldn’t surprise me if he had given up on fighting and was now living unobtrusively in Thailand or Japan or, if his bank card didn’t survive with him, then living quietly on state-benefits in the UK.

Shave off the beard, get a hair cut. Wear oversize jumpers, a ‘gay-pride’ scarf, little round spectacles and perhaps a fashionable ear ring. Fatten himself up a bit. Change his name to something from the Mediterranean, Greek or Lebanese perhaps … I reckon he could pull it off.
