Gibbs: Obama’s crappy poll numbers are Gallup’s fault or something

posted at 4:05 pm on December 8, 2009 by Allahpundit

A predictable update to yesterday’s Change. Every time I post a poll that’s bad news for conservatives, some denialist will show up in the comments to insist that (a) all polls are bunk and/or (b) this particular pollster is particularly bunk-ish. You and I call that person a troll. Obama calls him his press secretary.

No video, but I like to imagine that he punctuated this with the fingers-in-the-ears “la la la la” routine while reporters shouted follow-ups. The punchline? Gallup’s numbers, at 47/46, were actually better than the numbers The One’s been pulling at Rasmussen and CNN lately.

The president’s job approval rating is below 50% in several other polls, but White House spokesman Robert Gibbs today, when asked about the Gallup results, called them meaningless.

“If I was a heart patient and Gallup was my EKG I’d visit my doctor,” Gibbs said. “If you look back I think five days ago we were, there was an 11 point spread, now there’s a one point spread.”

Gibbs continued, “you know, I mean I’m sure a six year old with a crayon could do something not unlike that. I don’t put a lot of stake in, never have, in the EKG that is the daily Gallup trend. I don’t pay a lot of attention to meaninglessness.”

If you were a heart patient and your EKG was this flat, you’d already be in the hospital, champ. A simple “polls change all the time, we don’t place much stock in them” would have worked wonders here, but why go that route when you could insult a respected professional by comparing them to a child — for the second time this week? Can the famously disciplined Hopenchange message machine seriously do no better than this guy? Or is he simply emulating the whining and bad faith that’s lately been coming straight from the top?

Update: Frank Newport, Gallup’s EIC, responds with much greater politeness than Gibbs deserves.

If he gets fired, it will be because he’s failed to master the casual head-scratch-middle-finger move.

Polls are meaningless to this administration. They would rather concentrate on just making everything up, repeating it a thousand times, then proclaim it as the undeniable truth.

The message from this entire administration can be summed up in one phrase best spoken by a 5 year old
“IT’S NOT OUR FAULT!”

Gibbs: Obama’s crappy poll numbers are Gallup’s fault or something

Can’t be Gallup’s fault because all this time he led us to believe that it was Bush’s fault.

rukiddingme on December 8, 2009 at 4:10 PM

You and I call that person a troll.

I don’t call that person a troll, because they’re often right.

I’d bet that at least 80% of the “poll[s] that’s bad news for conservatives” that you’ve posted over the past years turned out to be irrelevant by the time it mattered.

As a PR person, I really do wonder how Gibbs still has a job. I wouldn’t hire him as a spokesman for ….. well, I can’t even make up a business that he’d be a qualified spokesperson for! However, as a very business person, I truly hope he keeps this job for a long time. Watching the Press Briefing is a daily exercise in “what stupid thing will he say/do to discredit the administration next” and a source of endless hours of media training materials for my clients.

Gibbs’ flippancy in his answer shows how much these polls are bothering the White House. As long as they are above a 50%, the president can use his coattails with Congress. If his approval sinks, those coattails shrink.

It’s an age-old game.

Plus, we just know this guy is a poll watcher. It’s got to be disheartening to be The One and watch his numbers head south. Don’t people understand? He’s Barack Obama – all unprecendented ‘n stuff.

As if there were any doubts about Google being run by Leftists, I was curious to see what news reports I could find after Chimpy Bush got his record-high 90% job approval from Gallup back in the fall of 2001.

Of course, I was unsuccessful, at least on the first page of Google results. Here are the search keywords I used:

1. I started with “Bush highest job approval”

First result was from PollingReport.com, which is a straightforward result.

But then the second result was “Bush Job Approval at 28%, Lowest of His Administration.”

Next up: “Bush’s Final Approval Rating: 22 Percent – CBS News”

Only 1 result on this keyword search on the first page referenced Bush’s highest job approval. Page 2 of the search results was equally biased.

2. I then tried “Bush 90% job approval”

Exactly the same results as #1.

3. And just the 3 words “Bush job approval” generated somewhat more generic results. But the 28% low was still right up there at #4.
