CNN: Palin’s favorables up seven points since summer, now at 46/46
posted at 5:30 pm on December 7, 2009 by Allahpundit
Not the first poll to show that her book tour’s helping her recover. The good news: She’s dug herself out of the hole she fell into after she resigned as governor. The bad news: Even now, swimming in buzz about what a monster success the book is, she’s only back to net zero. The keep-it-in-perspective news: Mr. Wonderful’s own favorables may be healthy but his job approval is not. Quite simply, there aren’t any overwhelmingly popular politicians on either side of the aisle these days. (Except, maybe, Colin Powell?)
Eight out of ten Republicans questioned the survey have a favorable opinion of Palin, with more than seven in ten Democrats view her unfavorably. Independents are evenly divided on Palin. According to the poll, 51 percent of men see her in a positive light, with an nearly equal amount of women view Palin in a negative way.
“The gender gap on Palin is not simply a function of the fact that women tend to identify with the Democratic party more than men do,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Even within GOP circles, Republican men like Palin more than Republican women do. John McCain put Palin on his ticket in 2008 to appeal to female voters, but it looks like men are a natural constituency for her.”…
“Palin is still not as popular Al Gore and remains more unpopular than Joe Biden, but her favorable rating is much higher than Dick Cheney’s,” adds Holland.
She’s never going to come down below 40 percent unfavorable, I think, given the left’s mania about her, so 55/45 or a few points higher is realistically her target. Favorables aren’t the problem metric anyway in her case; this is, and I’ll be curious to see if that number’s changed by the time the book tour ends. On a related note, am I right in thinking that the last nominee from either party who held no elected office when he was nominated was Reagan in 1980? Those are nice footsteps to follow in, but given the reservations about her qualifications, it’ll be a tough pattern for Palin to break.
Like the man says, though: “You can’t not talk about her.”
Update: Nope, I’m wrong. Mondale held no office in 1984, I believe, although he had of course been VP under Carter.

Speaking of the Governor…
I found Governor Palin’s hat, the one she wore at Fairfax book signing that has lots of the ladies clamoring to find, for sale at QVC if you have a special Palin supporting lady in your life and want to get it for them for Christmas. (Choose olive for the color.)

If people read her book and she continues to be a thorn-in-the-side of the Obama administration (and they continue to overreact to her), she will come to be seen by the masses as the anti-Obama, or at least the antidote to him. Obama did very well painting himself as the anti-Bush.

I think that the tour has helped her in more ways than one. Not only is it improving her numbers but, it is giving “ordinary people” and opportunity to really see her for who she is. Thousands of people stand in lines waiting for the oppotrunity to talk to her speaks volumes. Without the constraint of being in office allows people to see her as “one of us”. It’s a win-win. Like it or not, she has a gift.

Toonces the Driving Cat could have been marketed as the anti-Bush and won in 2008 after McCain played his I’m-suspending-my-campaign-to-vote-for-TARP card to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Watch Sarah’s favorability with woman start to increase. At some point, even liberal mothers will figure out that the Democrat’s policies are bad for their families.
huckleberryfriend on December 7, 2009 at 5:59 PM
What utterly worthless speculation.
No one knows what Palin’s upper and lower limits are on either side. The maniacal lefties who pay close attention and froth at the mouth at any stray Palin thread on the internet are a sliver of a splinter (kind of like rightwing political junkies, ahem).
Take her highest national approval levels – around the time of her Convention speech – as an intermediate goal, and recall her stratospheric favorables in Alaska as an upper limit.
The independent/centrist women who have abandoned her might calve off the leftwing iceberg all at once – and then she’d be unstoppable until and unless she screwed up again. Could be happening already, might not happen until election eve 2012, might not ever happen. Might depend upon their being convinced that she could win, might be a more subtle process.
None of which is the same as saying that she will or should run and win in 2012.
CK MacLeod on December 7, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Spirit of 1776 on December 7, 2009 at 6:00 PM
So can we assume that 37% fav is her base since that was the lowest her favs ever went. Therefore She is starting out with a core base of 37% of the population. More than 1/3rd of teh country. all her negatives are out. Now it is just a function of her showing her leadership skills and how bad Obama screws up. Mitt should be talking with her about his chance of securing the VP slot form him. If Palin/Mitt make an agreement now before the bruising primary fight the GOP could have a leader in ecxile for the next 2 years to stiffen teh spines of the GOP in DC

dballard, I suggest you first go to 3 speeches that Sarah has made in the past year: her Lincoln Day speech in Anchorage, her Evansville speech to a pro-life group and her Hong Kong speech in which you can find at her Facebook. And speaking of Facebook go to the entries starting with her comments on death panels and read all of them right through to her most recent post on Pearl Harbor and then tell me that Sarah Palin is not serious and not a pro.
And of course you can go back to Sarah’s convention speech on Sept 3, 2009 on You Tube if you want confirmation that Sarah can perform under pressure. By the way in Going Rogue Sarah recounts about the time she made the joke about the lipstick on the pig that she gave the rest of the speech WITHOUT A TELEPROMPTER.
Hemingway called courage, grace under pressure. Sarah Palin is one of the most courageous polticians in the modern era of American politics.
