Baucus took girlfriend on taxpayer-funded junkets in 2008

posted at 12:55 pm on December 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

What would a “state director” have to do with overseas Senate junkets?  It apparently helps if the state director is dating the Senator who takes the junket.  The Hill reports that Melodee Hanes, Max Baucus’ girlfriend and his state director, traveled with Baucus on taxpayer funds to the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam in 2008, just before Baucus nominated her to be a US Attorney (via Libertarian Republican):

Former U.S. attorney nominee Melodee Hanes traveled abroad with Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and six other staff members twice at the end of 2008, both times as a member of the lawmaker’s office.

Those two trips — to the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam — occurred while Hanes was serving in an official capacity as the state director for the Montana Democrat, but before Baucus recommended her for an attorney position she later turned down. …

All received the same per diem of roughly $200 for the UAE trip and more than $700 for the Vietnam stop, according to foreign travel reports published in the Congressional Record.

While it is normal for staff members to accompany lawmakers on foreign events and meetings, the Senate Finance Committee chairman’s trip in particular could raise some ethical red flags, experts suggested on Saturday.

Hanes has been dating Baucus since the summer of 2008, and if she was invited on a trip that “she would not have gone on otherwise” based on her position, Baucus may find himself in the wrong, noted Melanie Sloan, executive director of the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

Meanwhile, Baucus’ fellow Senator from Montana tossed him under the bus rather than defend the nomination of Hanes to the US Attorney post.  Jon Tester told Politico that he had supported the nomination as a courtesy to Baucus, and that it was entirely Baucus’ call:

Sen. Jon Tester said Sunday he had limited involvement with fellow Montana Democrat Max Baucus’s decision to float his girlfriend as a possible nominee for a top prosecutor position in Montana.

In an interview with POLITICO, Tester said “no” when asked if he was aware that Melodee Hanes and Baucus were engaged in a romantic relationship when he interviewed Hanes for the position of U.S. attorney in Montana earlier this year.

Tester called Hanes “well-qualified” but said “it was Max’s call” to include her name with two others on a list for the White House to consider before choosing a nominee for the position.

“We interviewed a bunch of folks,” Tester said.

They interviewed a bunch of folks?  What a coincidence that the most qualified candidate happened to be the one sharing Baucus’ bed!

Now we find out that Baucus had Hanes getting per diems for two junkets as well as promoting her for a DoJ position without disclosing his personal relationship with her.  If the Senate has any pretense at enforcing ethics, it should take this up immediately, and with as much relish as their probe into John Ensign’s peccadilloes.  Both involve the potential abuse of power, but Baucus’ has the additional dimension of misuse of public funds and crony corruption in attempting to secure a Department of Justice sinecure — which may have still been successful.

The worst part of this is the appointment. That puts it a couple notches above the shenanigans pulled by some of the other politicians like Sanford.

But hey, Baucus is a Democrat, so no standards to be held to here.

You’re kidding about ethics, weren’t you?

Our dear leaders have no concern, the public will never hear of it, the lame stream media will assure that.

Kudos to The Hill for either digging this up or at the very least reporting the information they received.

This also goes to the Newsbusters piece from Sunday, where even Howard Kurtz was calling out CNN for doing not a single story on this, while CBS’s Chip Reed told Kurtz, “I don’t think it has legs because there’s no sex scandal, and it’s not like Vitter. It’s not like Ensign. There’s no scandal here.”

The problem is Reid just took the initial information, saw the (D) next to Baucus’ name and decided there was no scandal. If Max was a senator with a (R) next to his name, you know Chip and others would have been burning up the Internet and the phone lines to see if Baucus had done anything with Hanes that involved spending taxpayer money exactly in the way reported by The Hill. But since they don’t like covering Democratic sex scandals, they decided just based on the initial evidence there was no sex scandal, and that was the end of it.

Only way Baucus would get busted is if he were caught red-handed (with a giant inflatable red hand to boot).

Democrats in Washington are never held accountable for their actions unless it’s too open-and-shut legally for them to ignore (a la Dollar Bill from Louisiana). They held Bill Clinton to be above the law for felony perjury, and compared to that this is chump change.

As a state employee, if I took a paramour with me on a trip at taxpayer expense, I’d be pounding sand 8 hours after it was discovered. Something’s really wrong with the fact that he only might have to worry about an ethics committee looking in to it. It’s time America took some of that snarky privilege away from these crooks–of both parties.

I can’t help but note a few things:

1) Standford’s mistress was at least attractive. (Of course, his wife is attractive also.
2) Mrs. Standford did NOT do the “stand by your man” thing like so many of the other political wives.
3) No one has accused Stanford of spending money directly on his mistress. He is accused of misusing public funds on the South American trip to see her in addition to the business/political purposes of the trip.
4) Baucus stands accused of taking his mistriss on a taxpayer funded junket.
5) Standford’s pecadillo was front page and top of the hour news in the MSM for at least a week (if not more).
6) Baucus similar (although in my opinion worse) pecadillo has hardly made a blip in the MSM.

Conclusion (as many have noted before): What a difference a letter makes.
