Video: Gibbs tells reporter to “calm down”

posted at 11:31 am on December 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

How badly did Robert Gibbs handle this? Even the White House press corps audibly gasps when he tells April Ryan, a reporter from American Urban Radio to “calm down” and then compares her to his young son in terms of temperament. Granted, the question she was pursuing was about as puerile as it gets; she wanted Gibbs on the record as to whether Michelle Obama felt overshadowed by White House social secretary Desiree Rogers. Was Gibbs being sexist, condescending, or was he just telling Ryan to grow up?

ABC’s Jordyn Phelps has the report:

Ryan had a heated back-and-forth with Gibbs over whether White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers overstepped her bounds in the “Gate-Crash-gate” incident and was pressing Gibbs on the subject through repeated questions.

“Some might have called her the belle of the ball, overshadowing the first lady,” Ryan said.

Gibbs said he hadn’t heard that criticism before.

Ryan continued in her questioning, asking whether Rogers had invited herself to the first state dinner.

Gibbs shrugged it off, then told Ryan to calm down and take a deep breath.

“This happens with my son. He does the same thing,” Gibbs said, referring to his young child. It drew ooohs from the press corps.

“Don’t play with me,” Ryan said.

In my opinion, Gibbs should have found a better, less condescending way of telling Ryan that the White House isn’t American Idol, and that the First Lady doesn’t have to worry about her social secretary overshadowing her. Maybe ignoring Ryan for a while would get the message across. Because honestly, with high unemployment, escalating energy prices, and an ongoing war, are urban radio listeners really all that concerned about Desiree Rogers’ relative wattage in comparison to Michelle Obama?

Take the poll:

Update: Jake Tapper tweeted me that Jordyn Phelps wrote this piece for ABC, not him. I’ve corrected it in the post, and thanks to Jake for the correction.

Imitate the Dems

How about an ugly rumor?

White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers was granted executive priviledge since she knows something!

Could we have a Tiger or Tigress Woods in the White House?

Or other unseemly stuff?

Why can’t she testify?

Why?

Are we low enough to do this kind of thing?

Then people wonder why I think my phone is bugged.

Separation of powers. Otherwise, Congress would be investigating the executive branch daily on everything.

What’s ironic is that Obama made a fuss over Bush “hiding” behind that.

But then, that’s just politics, I guess. It appears he’s not going to comply at all, even on small stuff.

Gibbs has been annoyed by questions from other reporters and never sunk to this level. So I do think that he took liberties with April due to her “status,” whether gender or otherwise.

He should publicly apologize.

AnninCA on December 5, 2009 at 12:09 PM

Bingo. Imagine Gibbs comparing, say, Jake Tapper to his young son. I vote, “supersize condescending w/ sexist cherry on top.”

So now the assertion of EP is no big deal. I wish that you guys were around when President Nixon was “destroying our nation” with it. Or even to answer all the worthies in HuffPO when they charted the use of EP by the Prince of Darkness, the evil “W”. The whole choir, band section and jackal group of liberals become very quiet at strange times.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tag/executive-privilege

They seemed really animated but still couldn’t match the fury of Dems directed at other Republican Presidents.

And since this is such a light subject, we can just let it pass. Why Watergate so soooo important since it was a criminal investigation. But aren’t they going to prosecute the party crashers? Ohhhhhhh…..

And where are the political cartoons and jokes on Letterman?

This has deep farce aspects.

IlikedAUH2O on December 5, 2009 at 1:06 PM

Well, one good thing: We cons tend to be polite to each other for the most part. Sure, sometimes we flip out but for the most part we work well together.

Gibbs was rude, to be sure, but that reporter needed to be shot down (figuratively speaking, of course). I dislike everyone in this Administration, but my disgust of the MSM runs deeper and for far longer. This occasion also shows that this Administration has contempt for everyone, including its own; it’s cannibalistic in a sense.

I love when the Left shows it’s willing to consume part of itself.

Trolls come on Hot Air and basically, they’re all the same. In their own masochistic way, they crave attention and a chance to prove their superior intellect. You’re right about the masochism part to a degree. I mean, over on Kos and such, they can all ‘yes’ each other to death. The trolls here bash us to no end, yes have a haven where they can all sip their wine at the computer and feel superior.

The only reason libs come here is to F up our pleasant times with each other, while we discuss and exchange ideas to keep our liberty.

There are truly people out there who aren’t happy unless they make others’ lives miserable.

You’re right, too, that being miserable has to be a terrible way to live. I thank God I learned enough to stop being a liberal.

classicaliberal on December 5, 2009 at 1:52 PM

We have something that libs don’t.

Libs think themselves morally superior, that their personal beliefs top everything else.

We, on the other hand, are Jews, Catholics, Protestants, and maybe a handful of Moslems. And all the various sects among those groups. We are Dagos, Micks, Pollacks, and Jew-boys. We’re Krauts and we’re Gooks.

We cons don’t take our identity from our heritage. We believe in the Constitution of the United States. That is the basis of our common belief.

Libs don’t have any such base. That’s why the Left will consume itself, like Gibbs did to that reporter. And that’s why the trolls who come here hate us, as they endlessly show. They have nothing on which to base their views except what fells good to them at the moment. They are need-driven and nothing more.

Adultery is bad unless it’s a Dem president on the hook. When Swaggert cheated on his wife, the libs pointed their fingers and said “A-ha! Gotcha!” We on the Right turned our backs on him as we should have.

But when Clinton ‘didn’t’ have sex with that woman, the libs closed ranks to protect him (the FIRST black president, I remind you libs).

Libs are NOT like we cons; libs are messed in the head so bad no FBI profiler can figure them out.

That’s really where it’s at.

Want to end the troll problem here? Ignore them. Then maybe they”l at least go away, and the rest of us can talk about keeping our liberty and protected our United States as we love them so much.

Liam on December 5, 2009 at 1:52 PM

Let’s not forget that Clinton’s Justice Dept. had already successfully prosecuted a female Federal employee for lying under oath about sex. When she did it, it was bad, but when he did the exact same thing, he was held by Democrats to be above the law.

And of course, Clinton also engaged in an adulterous relationship with a female workplace subordinate, in the workplace.. The Left happily gave him a pass for that too.

Django on December 5, 2009 at 5:04 PM

Gibbs is a child. He’s the guy that used to throw rocks at you in elementary school, and then hide behind the P.E. teacher and blame it on you.

However, in this case, April Ryan was more obnoxious than Gibbsy. I won’t say she deserves what she got, but being checked occasionally never hurt anyone.

realityunwound on December 5, 2009 at 5:07 PM

I had watched this video earlier on another site…maybe I have the wrong take, but I was under the impression that the question Ryan was trying to get an answer to was ‘who invited Rogers to the dinner?’

If the social staff doesn’t usually go to the dinners, why did Rogers, and leave the SS on their own? I thought it was a legitimate line of questioning, and deserved an ‘on the record’ answer. Especially in light of 3 SS folks being suspended.

I hadn’t caught the ‘overshadowing’ part – I agree, that is dumb. As for Gibbs, I don’t have any decent words to describe my disgust of him. Especially don’t like to think of him procreating. Ewwww…

It sounds like Desiree Rogers is a socialite hottie.
Maybe there’s a little competition between her and Michelle.

Desiree one-ups First Lady by tricking her into a fashion faux pas at the big White House social event.

That’s Desiree on the left there, I believe.
Has anyone heard anything from the First Lady since that event?

In my opinion, Gibbs should have found a better, less condescending way of telling Ryan that the White House isn’t American Idol, and that the First Lady doesn’t have to worry about her social secretary overshadowing her.

Ryan didn’t frame it as her own perception but said it had been “widely bantered about” by high ranking people, including Dems. But you’re right, Gibbs could have made a simple statement refuting the premise but thin skin seems catching at this WH. Plus maybe it’s the perception by some (cough-Michelle-cough) in the WH, too, and Gibbs knows it.

KittyLowrey on December 6, 2009 at 12:33 AM

Without taking sides and looking at it objectively, Gibbs was unnecessarily condescending because he handled the situation so poorly. Whether the reporter was out of line or not is irrelevant, Gibbs is the voice of the White House and it is his job to handle himself and the press professionaly. I thought the reporter was irritating with the way she badgered him about such a stupid topic considering all that is going on in the country but he came out looking like the fool because he couldn’t bite his tongue. He’s more amateurish at his job than his boss.

As for whether Michelle Obama felt upstaged or not, if she really is that petty than it is a legitimate story but let the tabloids and gossip sections handle it for now. When Barak danced with that Latina dancer for a few seconds just for fun, Michelle gave him the cold soldier aferwards. For waht!? Then she grew jealous of Oprah and her influence on Barak and now this stuff with Rodgers? The first lady seems to be willing to sacrifice the “lady” part in order to secure the “first”.

Gibbs is a POS

ginaswo on December 6, 2009 at 8:05 AM

the point was not she overshadowed Mechelle

the point was as was pointed out by GWB official KARL ROVE no less, the social secretary does NOT ATTEND the state dinner!!

ROVE was all over this yesterday
the probloem IS they appointed donors to these roles so these people want to go mingle with the powerful not sit at a desk and do the JOB which they were APPOINTED to do

it is NOT a silly question, maybe the framing was but not the underlying POINT

AND WTH is he to tell someone to CALM DOWN

This is the kind of crap they pulled on we HRC supporters

oh makes me grind my teeth
the frakkers

ginaswo on December 6, 2009 at 8:07 AM

i see from the poll most HA readers dont find this sexist

as a man when was the last time you were in the provess of doing your JOB and someone told you to ;calm down’

it is sexist
he would never say that to a man, it would not occur to him

ginaswo on December 6, 2009 at 8:08 AM

Why do I go to the zoo?

crr6 on December 5, 2009 at 12:43 PM

To convince them they are better off without their freedoms?

ray on December 6, 2009 at 9:03 AM

crr6 can dish it out, but can’t take it. He’s a weenie.

He so would say it to a man. Its not that he has a beef with women, its that he’s a smug, elitist, zero social skills having leftoid troll. Sexism has nothing to do with it, this is how he treats everyone.

Dark Eden on December 6, 2009 at 11:37 AM

It was a stupid question, and I understand his irritation. Having said that, as a matter of his own dignity, or at least the dignity of his office, he could have behaved with a bit more maturity. Gibbs, on his best day, couldn’t hold a candle to Tony Snow, in terms of demeanor or class.

morganfrost on December 6, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Robert Gibbs is much like his boss: arrogant, condescending and a big crybaby LIAR. Keep turning, worm!

Ricohoc on December 6, 2009 at 9:28 PM

HA posters lecturing on civility. Terrific.

crr6 on December 5, 2009 at 12:01 PM

Happens on every political site I’ve ever been to. Left, right, moderate, whatever…this is one trait that truly knows no party boundaries.

Dark-Star on December 6, 2009 at 10:37 PM

Yet another condescending, elitist, liberal, whiner in the administration. But we already knew that about him when he first opened his mouth. Baghdad Bob.

ultracon on December 7, 2009 at 7:46 AM

I can’t stand Gibbs; but I did feel a little sympathy when it became clear to me the reporter was badgering him and encroaching on her colleague’s time. BUT, he didn’t have to demean her.

Still can’t stand Gibbs.

the_souse on December 7, 2009 at 8:54 AM

It is amazing to me what Democrat administrations get away with. Can you even imagine if Dana Perino told a reporter to calm down.

shar61 on December 7, 2009 at 10:55 AM

Come on guys. You know you wish you could condescend to reporters like this.

I wish Gibbs had been even harder on her. Idiocy like this in the press deserves every bit of scorn we can heap on it.

I loathe what Gibbs stands for, but I can’t find fault with his response.

BO admin: We won
So everyone else, stop challenging us.Stop asking us questions.
That’s pretty much what I get out of this admin.

Badger40 on December 7, 2009 at 1:34 PM

Wow… play that again but this time it’s Bush or Dana Perino saying that. D’ya think it might make front page headlines?
