Quotes of the day

posted at 9:30 pm on December 5, 2009 by Allahpundit

“‘The Ron Paul bill is incredibly dangerous,’ said Mishkin, who is now a Columbia University professor, in a Bloomberg Radio interview. ‘It is remarkable the kind of attacks that are occurring on Fed independence.’…

“Paul’s bill ‘would be very dangerous in terms of promoting inflation,’ Mishkin said. ‘If you make the central bank beholden to politicians on a short-run basis, you get very bad outcomes: high inflation and less of the ability to deal with shocks like the ones we had recently.’”

***
“Without missing a beat, he took a swing at Republicans, too.

“‘Another group,’ he told the crowd, thinks you can’t be trusted to make your own decisions. ‘You might end up smoking, drinking or gambling,’ he said. ‘You might have to tolerate people. They might have religious values that are different . . . sexual (orientations) that are different.

“‘But we’ll let them do it!’ Paul shouted, as the crowd yelled in support. ‘The solution . . . is freedom of the individual . . . and respect and confidence that does work.’”

***
“No one thinks Ron Paul is going to lead the GOP, let alone be president. He’s 74 years old and just too…out there. He is an obscure guy who waited patiently (if not quietly) for the cycle of history to come back around his way, and finally it did. We have been arguing about money, credit, and banks since the first days of the republic. Paul is a bargain-basement Jefferson for our time.

“Still, the GOP needs to study Ron Paul, and learn. No one has better captured the sense of Main Street outrage over secret insider deals and Wall Street bonuses. No one has been more consistent about sticking to core conservative values—including the one that says the government shouldn’t spend more money than it takes in. If the GOP is going to appeal to independent voters, it has to confront its own corporate allies. ‘Republicans need to find a populist edge again,’ says Craig Shirley, the author of Rendezvous With Destiny, a new account of Ronald Reagan’s 1980 campaign. ‘Reagan spoke to the guy who thought he was being screwed by big business, by big government, by the big media.’ The good doctor, of all people, is showing Republicans the way. What they need is a candidate who embodies the spirit of Ron Paul. Just so long as it isn’t Ron Paul.”

Mishkin called surging gold a “sideshow” and said prices of the metal “move all over the map for many, many different reasons and have very little impact on the economy.”

“If gold price movements are reflecting other factors that could be important, you might worry,” he said. “For example, if gold is going up because people are worried the Federal Reserve won’t be able to contain inflation, that is serious.”

Wow. Staggering brilliance. First it’s a sideshow with little impact. Then it’s important and serious.

Oh, AP, if you really want a Ronulan baiting thread, just put up a poll that tallies a vote for another option as well as Ron Paul every time a vote for Doctuh Paul is registered. They’ll crash all the intertubes trying to win the poll and traffic will skyrocket.

I’m more than a bit torn: on the one hand, all of the Paulnuts (ie 100%, not an exaggeration) that I know personally are 9/11 Twoofers. I know that oughtn’t discredit his ideas, but man, that’s yucky.

On the other hand: most of RonPaul’s critics, and especially his loudest ones, are compleat buffoons and at least as nutty as his nuttiest supporters.

On the gripping hand: if the PaulNuts & the OBots start trading punches, I know which side my money’s on, & it ain’t on a buncha Chocolate Easter Bunny chasers.

A lot of young people were taken with Ron Paul. I have a lot of respect for him, but know that he is unelectable nationally. Republicans could do worse when looking for clues as to what Americans want. His is a forthright and important message packaged in brown paper. We need someone with all the pretty bows and paper, otherwise, these short concentration kids can’t pay attention.

Unfortunately, no. I was VERY disappointed with Sarah Palin. In her book she states:

“The House of Representatives rejected a Bush-backed economic bailout plan in a vote in which two-thirds of Republicans voted no. The impression this made on the electorate was not helpful to our cause. Millions of Americans were poised to go bankrupt or lose their savings, and the perception was that Republicans had failed to respond.”

I know folks here LOVE her, and I like her also, but she is not as fiscally conservative as Paul.

The Federal Reserve is independent from Congress, but its behavior indicates that Bernanke is under Obama’s thumb. From the bailout scam to devaluing the currency they are behaving as a team would and both are stymying Congress at the same time.

Not into the “Revolution,” and don’t think Paul will win a national primary.

However, some of his ideas need to be considered and incorporated into the GOP platform.

cs89 on December 5, 2009 at 10:12 PM

Don’t hold your breath on the GOP adopting any of his ideas. They are just as beholden to special interests as the most corrupt liberals. Wait until the GOP can figure out that holding their next conference in Hawaii as the rest of America is suffering through a recession is not a good idea, and that adopting a list of requirements of things you must oppose to be granted monies is moronic before you hope they adopt a platform of fiscal conservatism and a humble foreign policy.

From the WSJ:
With Humor, Palin Attempts Media Truce
Former Alaska Governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, never a big fan of the mainstream media, stepped into the lion’s den Saturday night and attempted to call a truce, of sorts.
Ms. Palin spoke at the winter dinner of the Gridiron Club, an organization of Washington journalists where parody and satire are the required entertainment form, and made light of her jousting with the Fourth Estate.
“Sometimes you just have to trust your instincts,” she told the assemblage of senior Washington journalists. “And when you don’t, you end up in a place like this.”
Ms. Palin also made light of the intramural warfare that broke out within the John McCain presidential campaign after she became his running mate–a warfare that made great copy for many of the journalists who were in the room at a Washington hotel. Ms. Palin implied she was happy to be beyond the campaign experience, and to have survived the not-for-attribution attacks from McCain campaign aides that followed. She said she is enjoying, by contrast, her current tour around the country to promote her new book. “The view is so much better from inside the bus than under it,” she cracked.
One of her jokes referred to the famous strains between her and Steve Schmidt, the McCain campaign manager famed for his shaved head. “If I ever need a bald campaign manager, all I’m left with is James Carville,” she joked.
She also got in a dig at her vice presidential campaign rival, Joe Biden, saying that if she had won he would be the one on book tour. Taking off from the title of her book (”Going Rogue”), she said Mr. Biden’s book likely would have been entitled “Going Rogaine,” a reference to the vice president’s hair-challenged profile.
But despite her history of tension with the Fourth Estate, Ms. Palin closed with a reference to her own background as a journalism student and sports broadcaster and a tribute to the importance of journalists and their role in keeping politicians honest.

Mishkin sounds like the global warmists when scaremongering about the transparency bill.

A former Fed governor slavishly defending the institution? I’m shocked. Once people wake up and see where 95% of the dollar’s value was destroyed, how they’re manipulating the currency and how Wall St. banks are getting trillions in secret welfare, they’ll want to burn the Fed to ashes.

MirCat on December 5, 2009 at 10:47 PM

The third block of quotes has it spot on, I believe, at least in one regard. It is unlikely Dr. Paul will ever attain the presidency due to his age, his perceived radicalism, and the very real radicalism of his followers. On the other hand his domestic ideas are pure brilliance, while his foreign policy is… unwise to put it kindly.

The second block does bring up some issues I have with certain items of Dr. Paul’s domestic agenda. Namely the ‘legalization’ crowd. I have some very deep misgivings about that.

All that said, the nation really needs a good jolt of Ron Paul’s ideas. I for one have heartily backed the effort to Audit the Fed, and I can no longer count how many times I have e-mailed my Representative and Senators on that issue. Mishkin’s attempts to stave off the (prayerfully!) inevitable is both humorous and sad.

So, at the dinner, she created one: “A: Alaska, media not understanding it, page 1-432.

Non-Farm Payroll Fairy Tales

The TrimTabs employment analysis, which uses real-time daily income tax deposits from all U.S. taxpayers to compute employment growth, estimated that the U.S. economy shed 255,000 jobs in November. This is in extreme contrast with the Government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics report which showed a loss of only 11,000 jobs in November. Here’s the article link from Clusterstock.com: BLS is full of BS

ADP, the global business outsourcing firm which, among other functions, provides payroll services to 400,000 U.S. companies representing 24 million employees, had estimated on Wednesday that 169,000 jobs were lost in November.

I would suggest that, given what we know about the manipulation of Government statistics, that the TrimTabs and ADP estimates of the employment situation are much more reliable than the Government estimates. TrimTabs and ADP make a living selling accurate, unbiased economic data to the investment management industry. If their data sucks they don’t get paid. The Obama administration, on the other hand – especially at this point in time – is completely incentivized to produce a fairy tale which shows that the employment situation is improving.

Plus she ran with that turncoat McCain. McCain was set up to lose. We might as well have nominated Arlen Specter.

Isn’t it an interesting coindicence that the only two people who in recent history have been a threat to the Two Partys… are both “loony as a fruitcake”…

What a Coinkydink…

As to the Bank issue… Funny how only CONGRESS has the power to coin money… yet in my pocket is a Federal Reserve Note, which is the legal tender of the US…

If you want to change the Constitution, then AMEND it… so WE get a voice in contract changes… don’t just IGNORE it.

The quote from her damn book is in this thread. Let me go and find it for you. Not only did she come out in support of the bailouts during the election, but she defends it.

“The House of Representatives rejected a Bush-backed economic bailout plan in a vote in which two-thirds of Republicans voted no. The impression this made on the electorate was not helpful to our cause. Millions of Americans were poised to go bankrupt or lose their savings, and the perception was that Republicans had failed to respond.”

thphilli:I haven’t had access yet to her book, however,
Sarah wasn’t elected, and if she was,she would of
been accountable!

And,the key words,”are not helpful to our cause”,
that to me,means that Sarah didn’t personally side
with okaying the bailout!

What I read, within those lines,is that the percep
tion,is the Republicans let down the electorate, but
really,in hindsight, the bailouts of done absolutely
squat, and its only a matter of time, before the US
economy goes off the rails!!

Seriously? Then you just must be giant fans of everyone on this site who turn a thread completely NOT about Palin into a Palin love fest, who apologize for everything she does and who ignore anything negative about her. On a scale of annoyance, Palin supporters far outweigh people who like Ron Paul because of his crazy ideas like “stick to the constitution”.

thphilli on December 5, 2009 at 11:48 PM

Sure, the Palin Zombies can be annoying as well, but not once has one of them pretended to be a constitutional scholar and traded off the “stick to the constitution” meme as if he is the sole arbiter of what the Constitution signifies. Coincidentally, “sticks to the Constitution” seems to be whatever he wants at any given moment. Just like every other politician (only the don’t insult peoples intelligence by claiming that they are the only ones “sticking to the constitution”.)

Add in the 9/11 conspiracy theorists who cling to him like dingelberry’s. Add in the isolationism. Add in the Blimp and the spammed forums and the skewed online polls and the basement dwelling middle aged virgin moonbats who completely adore the weird little man…

No. Not a fan.

canopfor on December 6, 2009 at 12:30 AM

You just responded with “would of” and “to me that means”. No, she supported the bailouts.

COURIC: Why isn’t it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries? Allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy? Instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?

PALIN: That’s why I say, I like ever American I’m speaking with were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the tax payers looking to bailout.

But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up the economy– Helping the — Oh, it’s got to be about job creation too. Shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americas. A

And trade we’ve got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive scary thing. But 1 in 5 jobs being created in the trade sector today. We’ve got to look at that as more opportunity. ALl those things under the umbrella of job creation.

This bailout is a part of that.

No spinning that. And again, this was another example of Palin sounding like she has absolutely no clue what she is talking about. It seriously sounds like she was just pulling words and ideas out of her head and running with it.

thphilli on December 6, 2009 at 12:36 AM

Boxy_Brown on December 6, 2009 at 12:35 AM

Its not like we have much to go on to say she isn’t. In the last year she has acted like a RINO for 6 months and then acted like a conservative for the last 3 months. We only have the words she says to go on, and a lot of the time they are confusing and contradict each other. Palin is an example of people projecting their beliefs on their candidate. Liberals did the same with Obama.
