GOP weekly address: Cancer survivor Carly Fiorina on mammograms and ObamaCare
posted at 5:30 pm on December 5, 2009 by Allahpundit
No one expects much from these weekly talking-points communiques, least of all from Fiorina after last year’s campaign gaffes, but this one’s superbly delivered and almost shockingly effective. A nice catch from Bill Dupray: At no point does she mention her Senate bid or even the words Republican, Democrat, or Obama. I wonder if that was the GOP’s idea, to make it feel more intimate and less overtly political, or whether Fiorina herself demanded it. Rarely will you see a candidate given a national spotlight decline the opportunity to mention her candidacy, but like I say, this ain’t the usual message fare.
Another thing she doesn’t mention, per Michael Roston in the comments to Dupray’s post: The fact that she’s swimming in dough and can fully afford to pay her own way for even the most expensive treatments. Expect that to be the main line of attack even though it doesn’t address her point about rationing, along with plenty of outrageous outrage from the masters of victim politics that the GOP would dare “exploit” a victim here.

That’s heavy hitting. Her comments from 5:00 are superb (and set up, of course, by everything previous to it).
True, but that’s largely ineffective in refuting points like hers.
In a lighter note, the test she did to discover the lump couldn’t have been done by Palin. Or Obama. Or McCain.

by the way, the “she has money line” of attack will shrivel in the face of her being a cancer survivor.

The money attack can be answered that after all the little people are stuck on rationed ObamaCare, Fiorina will still be able to take care of herself and her family. But she cares too much about this country to just stand by and let this happen.
myrenovations on December 5, 2009 at 5:49 PM
But with public option, it doesn’t matter. You are not allowed to use your own money for medical treatments if there is a public option. Add insult to injury, she would be taxed 40% for having Cadillac healthcare and taxed some more for being wealthy.

Just like women hated Palin; I bet they also hate breasts. I mean they have too if this bill goes through before Christmas.
If they loved breasts they’d protest the bill, calling, emails, etc instead of Shopping and cooking dinners. This is an extraordinary time in world history.

scalleywag on December 5, 2009 at 6:29 PM
I hate to be the one to point it out, but she said she found the lump by self-examination two weeks after a clear mammogram. The problem here is that the mammogram did not result in early detection of her cancer – in fact, it seems to have missed it altogether. This appears to undermine her whole argument about preventive screenings.

While I agree with her conclusions, Fiorina’s own experience with mammograms does NOT undercut the recent federal panel recommendation that women should less often go through mammogram testing. (I think the lack of evidence that mammograms cause more actual physical harm than good from catching breast cancer early undercuts the federal panel’s recommendation.)
Fiorina says (and this is a slight paraphrase, and the emphasis is mine), “Two weeks after a CLEAR mammogram, I discovered a lump through self examination.” So, clearly, the federal panel’s recommendation about reduced mammogram’s would have had no effect on Ms. Fiorina. On the otherhand, perhaps the federal panel’s recommendation agains teaching women how to do self examination is undercut by her experience.

months ago I was suggesting loudly that if only the breast cancer survivors would get on board against Obamacare. Have they been with us? I’ve heard little from them & I would count them as serious players in any medical discussion.
kelley in virginia on December 5, 2009 at 6:49 PM
I don’t think it undermines it at all. Plenty of people have had their cancers detected by the kinds of screenings Osama Obama’s health-thugs want to eliminate.
However Fiorina found hers, it’s all good. Her message is strong and clear.
People will die when the Traitor-in-Chief’s lunatic plan is passed. The alternative is to spend a little more on what works, and a hell of a lot less for government involvement.
MrScribbler on December 5, 2009 at 6:50 PM
Ahhh, but here’s the problem. At the same time the “death panel” recommended the change in mammogram policy, they also said that we should no longer teach woman how to do self examinations!
Now granted, that’s not a hard skill to learn, but after decades of pushing the idea of self exams as an early detection tool, the government is now saying forget it.
THESE are absolutely the death panels that Sarah was talking about!

I’m so done with Boxer. Her attitude has got to go.
AnninCA on December 5, 2009 at 7:14 PM
I like how Carly told the truth. The mammogram, or hers, did not pick up the lump.
That doesn’t negate the value of mammograms, however.
She’s quite right about that issue. It often DOES pick up cancer in stages that women’s lives are saved. And the recommendations DID do a cost-lives saved balance and came down against women’s lives.
There’s just no getting around that one.
AnninCA on December 5, 2009 at 7:16 PM
Fiorina might have plenty of money, but even if she’s allowed to spend it, that will only buy treatments that actually exist.
Our benevolent betters seem to think they’ll be safe from whatever they pass. But money and connections didn’t save Ted Kennedy. Maybe it’s time to start emphasizing what happens to medical research under socialized medicine. They don’t base their votes on what We The Constituents want, so are they capable of understanding that they too have skin in this?
Nevicata on December 5, 2009 at 7:32 PM
This brought me back…
some win, some lose this battle. NOT ONE would deny that early detection saves more lives. The recommendation WAS SHOCKING, a mere month after National Breast Cancer awareness month, no less. Pure cost consciousness.
My aunt chose a blend of natural and traditional medication for her cancer. We disagreed with some of those choices and we lost her. However, the fact remains that she HAD options. When a government entity dictates individual treatment based on costs of millions in the system, tell me death of many isn’t the logical outcome? Stupid, stupid recklessness…NO. It’s a pure hatred of the individual which compels government to take over something perfectly capable of righting itself with free market solutions, powered by free people. That’s called tyranny.
I hate these people.

Seven Percent Solution on December 5, 2009 at 7:36 PM
The fact is that the panel bizarrely recommended against women performing their own self-exams along with the cut-back in mammograms. The bottom line is that, if FIorina had followed those recommendations, what she said might have happened indeed could have happened, and she may well have died.
Her argument was undermined only by the fact that she unfortunately failed to mention that part of the recommendation, not because she was trying to pull a fast one as you seem to be suggesting.
PoodleSkirt on December 5, 2009 at 7:36 PM
For those people who are focusing on “two weeks after a clear mammogram” — the very same task force recommended against teaching breast self-examination.

Here are the statistics which show the percentage of each ethnic type that has been exterminated through abortion since 1967.
White 10.3%
Hispanic 16.9%
Black 28.1%
Asian and Pacific Islander 16.0%
Native American and Alaskan Native 16.0%
Total Minority 21.7%
1/5 of the minorities have been exterminated.
Now with the Obamacare legal extermination plan, the government (the eugenticists, Cass Sustenien and Holder being a part of them) will be able to selectively exterminate the “human weeds” they don’t want.

Let’s put aside history for a moment. Carly Fiorina is running a very good campaign in CA. She is likeable; a shrewd strategist who is staying on message and a good communicator. She connects with people, especially women. Chuck Devore may be more conservative, but he is not coming across as likeable. He attacks Fiorina instead of providing a positive message of his own. Fiorina is going after Boxer with a balance of criticism and a positive message of her own.
Chuck Devore is running against Carly Fiorina. Carly Fiorina is running against Barbara Boxer.
Prediction: Fiorina will win the primary and the general.

All I see is internet stuff, which does correspond to your description, but mainly because Fiorina runs those anti-Boxer web ads at some of the sites I frequent, and because DeVore supporters at some of the same places do, as you suggest, focus their fire on Fiorina.

Roston’s point – this liberal “main line of attack” – misses that life-saving technologies *won’t get developed* in a context where scientists don’t *anticipate* markets for them.
Now the answer is “well if they anticipate correctly they should have known that someone like Fiorina will be willing to pay for expensive technologies.” Except that’s asinine – how did they know that someone wealthy would have this kind of need three steps before the technology was deployable.
Medical technology, like any technology, *accretes* – there has to be a constant need for the previous-best technology and – very, very critically – the anticipation that someone will be able to pay for the next-best one.
Yes – once a technology is developed then the top 1% can pay for it. But if there is a single entity that gets to set *anticipated priorities* and that entity is *politicized* toward (a) fads and (b) technologies used only in the average cases, the market will naturally gravitate in those directions.
That’s why we out-innovate Europe a billion to one in the medical field.

IlikedAUH2O on December 5, 2009 at 8:44 PM
Probably they’ll try to scare people that Fiorina outsourced – as Senator from CA she would no doubt outsource the entire country’s labor to the Phillipines or something. The one-sided view of her tenure at HP – made very popular in the immediate aftermath of her departure – may also be spread around, even though serious observers now view her main initiatives as positive on balance.
And none of it will matter much if she runs a good campaign and 2010 is enough of a wave election to finally rid us of Boxer.
(I was about to say something intemperate about what I would give to get rid of Boxer.)
CK MacLeod on December 5, 2009 at 8:56 PM
Dr.’s can make mistakes in reading any test results…the point is, the cancer was missed, she found the lump through a self-exam (which they also want to stop)…and if her next mammogram wasn’t for TWO years, her survival chances would be greatly diminished.

Well, whatever it takes to get Boxer out, I’m all for. I was simply pointing out that she undercut her own case because by her own admission the Mammogram would not (in fact did not) catch the cancer.
Several people above have pointed out that the death panel, er, “experts” also recommended eliminating teaching self-examination. I was unaware of that, and this was a perfect chance for Fiorina to point that out – but she didn’t.

After a clear mammogram she would not have “qualified” for another one for 2 more years. Some dipstick would be telling her “no, you can’t schedule and appointment until 2011 and you are also not qualified to do a self-exam so we can’t use that information. Yes, you may apply for an exemption with an 18 month turnaround time.”
Mojave Mark on December 5, 2009 at 11:43 PM

The trouble here is that she has too many other “moderate” positions (of the ones we can find)and follows McCain’s theory of shooting himself in the foot to make the left happy. She is two people- a good successful person with a bright mind and a poor politician- with limited charisma and a bad policy mindset along with a weak self-promotion problem. You can see she can probably run a board room in a heartbeat, but can’t stand in front of thousands of people and ask for their vote. Two different talents.
archer52 on December 6, 2009 at 7:18 AM
Yes, it seems a bit illogical to claim that she might not have survived had cancer screenings not been available, since her screening didn’t detect her cancer.
However, almost every medical test is capable of returning a false negative. Her point is that the cancer can develop suddenly, and thus, in aggregate, the chances of detecting a cancer are higher with a higher number of tests.

Carly Fiorina is a RINO and a little bit crazy in the bargain…
Vote Chuck DeVore, the Conservative Republican running against Boxer!
Jenfidel on December 6, 2009 at 8:28 AM
A question for everyone here. I would like to hear the opinions….
Scenario One: We should only run a truly Conservative Candidate in every state race, so we should support a more conservative candidate than Fiorina for the R nomination; then, in the general election, the people will respond to that conservative’s message. And if they don’t, having Boxer back in the Senate is no different than a ‘moderate’ or ‘RINO’ Republican anyway.
Scenario Two: We should support the candidate in California who has the best chance of beating Boxer, knowing that even a ‘moderate’ is a step in the right direction for that seat. It’s better to elect a moderate Republican than re-elect Boxer. Plus, we need a majority caucus in the Senate to affect committe chairmanships, rules, what bills come to the floor, et al…
Scenario three; Any other thoughts of what might transpire?
Your thoughts?
Red State State of Mind on December 6, 2009 at 8:53 AM
It is pretty good, and the logic of her position is unassailable, but the presentation’s main weakness is that her cancer was detected by self-exam, despite a clean bill of health from a recent mammogram.

Red State State of Mind on December 6, 2009 at 8:53 AM
DeVore might be “more conservative” than Fiorina. The closest thing I ever get to a substantive difference rather than a vague assertion or a personal attack on Fiorina is that DeVore’s been a rock-ribbed conservative longer than she has been and is therefore more trustworthy, or that she supported McCain – like 98% of conservatives last year. Didn’t DeVore support McCain over Obama? Assuming he did, are we supposed to put the fact that he had a lower profile in his favor?
Scenario Three: If we have two conservatives running, why not let them fight it out on things that matter rather than labeling them prejudicially and responding reflexively?
CK MacLeod on December 6, 2009 at 11:49 AM
I guess she couldn’t get too sledgehammery about it, but, although using “Task Force” through most of the speech, the first time she mentioned it, she did use the word “Panel” *wink*wink*nudge*nudge*

Fiorina has done some public town hall type events in various cities which brought some local TV coverage. Otherwise it’s been mostly internet stuff at this stage. Devore has been largely absent except for negative attacks on Fiorina. He is not giving people a reason to vote FOR him. He is trying to get people not to vote for Fiorina. Unless he develops a positive message, image and starts connecting with people Fiorina will win. Devore is coming across as a mean white guy – the typical conservative stereotype.

California is ending subsidies for mammograms for women under 50 BASED on that wonderful government study that said it isn’t necessary for women under 50 to have mammograms.

Okay, read that again- could be taken that it was based on the government board recommendations- decision was approved on Dec 1 and goes into effect Jan 1 – or on California’s budget woes or a combination of both.
Still think it helps Carly Fiorina.

Cervical cancer survivor here – the two “task force recommendations” regarding testing of two very common female cancers infuriated me more than I could express. Ballistic begins to encompass it. No – they didn’t intend these two reports to come out at the same time, just a coincidence! And that the healthcare debacle debate was going on at the same time? My goodness! Who’d have thunk? Do these people really think we are that stupid?!
I knew that the mammogram testing would get more attention, more outcry against these latest recommendations, as it should, being more common. Excellent piece by Fiorina. Rock solid. The more so because she leaves her political persuasion out of it, and speaks to the medical reasons. She found by self-testing, which they are now recommending women stop. I say, if its working, and our numbers are blasting the govt run HC systems of other countries out of the water as far as prevention or early detection? Don’t break it.
Thank you, Fiorina, for speaking intelligently on a national scale for those of us who haven’t access to that voice.
(goes off to calm self down after thinking about idiots, once again…)
