Unemployment drops to 10.0%
posted at 8:55 am on December 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The Obama administration gets a little good news this morning. The unemployment rate eased back two-tenths of a point to 10.0%, only the second decline in unemployment since the start of the Obama presidency. However, the number of chronically unemployed rose again, indicating that the front-line decrease does not capture the full direction of unemployment:
The unemployment rate edged down to 10.0 percent in November, and nonfarm payroll employment was essentially unchanged (-11,000), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. In the prior 3 months, payroll job losses had averaged 135,000 a month. In November, employment fell in construction, manufacturing, and information, while temporary help services and health care added jobs.
In November, both the number of unemployed persons, at 15.4 million, and the unemployment rate, at 10.0 percent, edged down. At the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed persons was 7.5 million, and the jobless rate was 4.9 percent. (See table A-1.)
Among the major worker groups, unemployment rates for adult men (10.5 percent), adult women (7.9 percent), teenagers (26.7 percent), hites (9.3 percent), blacks (15.6 percent), and Hispanics (12.7 percent) showed little change in November. The unemployment rate for Asians was 7.3 percent, not seasonally adjusted. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)
Among the unemployed, the number of job losers and persons who completed temporary jobs fell by 463,000 in November. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) rose by 293,000 to 5.9 million. The percentage of unemployed persons jobless for 27 weeks or more increased by 2.7 percentage points to 38.3 percent. (See tables A-8 and A-9.)
Temp jobs and health care have been hiring, and the former could signal the start of a mild job recovery — if jobs weren’t bleeding from everywhere else.
Update: Who would have guessed that we only lost 11,000 jobs in November? I expect that number to get revised later this month. It does suggest that the mass-layoffs number will drop significantly from the highs of the last five months.
Update II: Jim Geraghty makes a good point:
However, if you hear any fool on the left contending that the Obama administration can be credited with turning the economy around, the BLS release gives us a lot of reasons to point out our economy has steadily deteriorated during this year: “Last month, the number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) rose by 293,000 to 5.9 million. The percentage of unemployed persons jobless for 27 weeks or more increased by 2.7 percentage points to 38.3 percent.”
Also note “construction employment declined by 27,000 over the month.” Every month since the stimulus passed, employment in the construction field has dropped, confirming the president’s admission that the “shovel ready” slogan of the stimulus package was bunk.
Porkulus has done nothing for those fields that Obama claimed to be stimulating: long-term jobs, construction, and manufacturing. The only jobs increasing this year are temp jobs, health care, and government sector jobs, the latter only occasionally.

Let me see. Republicans want the unemployment rate to go up. Republicans want us to fail in Afghanistan. Republicans do not want us to find a solution to help millions of Americans obtain Health Care. In general Republicans want the US to fail so that Limbaugh can say “I told you so.” about Obama.
Now how are Republicans different than al-Qaeda again?

Bleeds Blue, your close personal friend Barney Frank was encouraging banks to loan to people with no credit, under threat of lawsuits, pushing Carter/Clinton’s asinine Community Reinvestment Act. When challenged on the mental and fiscal cluelessness of the idea, and of the fact Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae should have tightened oversight, Frank stated (on video) “There’s no problem with these loans, or at Fannie or Freddie. None at all.” Now this asswipe (and his Democrat cohort) are in charge of “fixing” the mess they allowed to exist and fester with little or no control. Idiotic. As far as “Republicans were keeping interest rates artificially low”, that’s also idiotic. Alan Greenspan AND his complexion-challenged MSNBC harpy wife are lifelong Democrats. And GREENSPAN is the one that produced the incomprehensible “negative interest rate” the Fed was paying less than two years ago. Do some research before you blow your nose in blog commentary. Or go back to the Huffington Post with your fellow travelers.

“…which began in ’06…”? I think you meant ’96 (see the chart’s on pages 8 and 9), per the National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s own numbers.
Yes it was, via the artificial demand that was created as a result of the DEMOCRATS having Fannie and Freddie alter their underwriting standards in order to provide over $4 TRILLION dollars in subprime loans.
Yeah, it was.
No…they were just the ones who were responsible for setting the stage by having Fannie and Freddie scrap decades worth of underwriting standards in order to promote “social justice”.
Why did banks make bad loans? Because Fannie and Freddie told them to, with the understanding that they would purchase the loans from the banks. Why did Fannie and Freddie do this? Because DEMOCRATS – beginning under Clinton – instructed them to.

I’d be willing to bet that the highest percentage of gains are temp jobs. There is always an increase in temp jobs at this time of year because of retail hiring and telemarketing. These people will be unemployed in January or February and will not have worked long enough to collect unemployment. Along with many of the health care jobs, these are also low paying positions with no benefits. And then there are the people whose unemployment benefits have run out.

Point 1:
Republicans don’t want to see the unemployment rate go up, we just want it accurately reported and not have the fake rate then used in the mass media’s propaganda campaign for The One. The media are probably upset they can’t give him credit for inventing Christmas, since that is the only reason “ONLY” 11,000 people were lost from payrolls.
And on that note, did you take math in between your “How to Push Identity Politics” classes. How do you lose 11,000 jobs, not gain jobs, and have the unemployment percentage go down? That’s right, you exclude people who are no longer eligible for unemployment because they’ve been unemployed too long!
Point 2:
Find me one Republican who wants us to fail in Afghanistan.
Point 3:
Republicans have been putting forth other options for the health care system. There voices are just ignored by all the media you watch. Summary: Interstate competition, increase choice in plans (1300 health care insurance companies in US, only 8 you can buy from in CA), tort reform, etc.
Does Obama and the Democrats having an epic fail help Republicans politically? Absolutely. But that does not mean we enjoy watching the suffering. There may be some excited by it, but they are sick. But not as sick as all the Democrats that felt encouraged by war deaths pre-surge because it would help them, and you can view statements by Harry Reid, John Kerry, Dick Durban, and many other Democrats trying to make political hay off of those deaths.
Again, we don’t WANT or WISH for bad news. We just want ACCURATE news and for the state run media to stop using inaccurate numbers to spin a positive out of bad news: we lost 11,000 more jobs, at least, and employment gains were in TEMPORARY jobs. Hello, we get temporary jobs every November . . .
Overall, fewer people are working. I guess by your definition, real people are only people who are still working? If that’s true, than there are fewer real people this month, because THERE ARE STILL FEWER PEOPLE working if the economy “ONLY” lost 11,000 jobs . . .
Cut taxes. Stop spending like an unbridled credit card addict. Stop the massive legislative agenda that has employers laying people off or waiting to hire to see if they are going to have health insurance or cap-and-tax taxes. Shrink government and get out of the way of business. Stop demolishing the dollar.
But that would mean an end to the socialist agenda . . . so it won’t happen under this party and our economy will continue to be destroyed until at least January 2011. Not because we want it to be, but because the party in charge is having a party and charging the American people with the cost. Eventually, the bill will have to be paid, and even if the GOP does take legislative power back in a big way, the bill may be too big for anybody to do anything about . . .
PastorJon on December 4, 2009 at 1:38 PM
Oh, by the way, this was the same media that claimed Bush was destroying the economy during his first few years in office while unemployment ran below the average for all Clinton’s time in office . . .

I have serious misgivings about the 11,000 number. For two days, leading economists and business leaders have predicted 120,000-150,000 jobs lost and we get one-tenth? Sounds fishy. I agree that when the “revision” comes out we’ll see 10.4%+

When you try to jump off your 10 story apartment building with a napkin as a parachute I’m going to tell you that won’t work either.
It isn’t that I don’t want it to work, its that I know it won’t work so I’m trying to get you to stop.
You can’t fly, a napkin isn’t a parachute, and if you do this you’re going to die… sorry I’m not like your friends who you think “don’t want you to die”.
I’d like the economy to pick up; but the plans in place won’t let it. I’d like us to win in Afghanistan; but showing a willingness to leave instead of showing resolve to our enemies will not help us do that. I’d like to give everyone free health care, and free housing, and free food, and a pony for everyone… but I don’t believe this is exactly plausible either; I don’t know where the magical money tree is to pay for everything.
I didn’t realize that believing Obama isn’t capable of Magically fixing everything is equal to terrorism.
If it is, yes I’m a terrorist. And you’re delusional.
But just because you don’t like the answer doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly magically be able to fly when you jump off the building. You won’t fly, you will die. I don’t want that to happen, and the best way I know to stop it is to tell you it won’t work.
I don’t want you to try and fail and die so I can say “I told you so” I want you not to jump.
But since you can’t see the difference, call me mean for not wanting you to be able to fly. But do me a favor, and don’t jump anyhow… even though I’m just a big meanie who would rather you plummet to your death than magically fly like superman.

Are you enjoying the Obama/democrat depression?

Do you hate people who shop at Walmart?

And in charge of both houses for the last three years.

I have had it. Today is one year and two days since I lost my job. I can’t move out of NJ because of my family, but we have 15% unemployment in my county. I know they add an additional 7% for people like me, who have run out of unemployment benefits. I have 20 years of experience and am halfway to my Masters and I can’t even get an entry level job. I am willing to take anything. I have never had a problem getting a job before and I am just fed up and disgusted by this. I have to borrow money from my home equity loan to live and to pay for my COBRA, which just went up to $650/month for just me, and not my husband, but my pancreas is so bad I have to have health insurance (but I would never want that stupid public option). I just don’t know what to do and have never been this disgusted in my life. I hope Rush is wrong on this one that BHO really does want us all not working so that we give up and apply for government assistance.
Disgusted. Any suggestions?

Well, I can’t explain it, but there’s some real smart scientists who specialize in climatology, who I think can help you.

I sorry to hear that, I hope your situation changes soon.
I not sure I understand that, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. If you have the opportunity to get a job what difference does it make where you are. If your the bread winner you have got to make the bread.
Stop wondering what Obama wants or what Rush said, both of them have jobs. Your have got to take care of yourself and your family. If you have been without a job for a year, I would look at a different location, but things are bad all over the country so you have to be inventive. One thing you shouldn’t do is give up.
BTW, if there were an additional 11,000 jobs lost in November how did the unemployement rate drop from 10.2 to 10? Hummm, makes you wonder.

Have you ever wondered why the CPI, GDP and employment numbers run counter to your personal and business experiences? The problem lies in biased and often-manipulated government reporting.
