Quotes of the day

posted at 10:25 pm on December 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Palin began her political career as a reformer breaking up Alaska’s corrupt boys club and shifted seamlessly into last fall’s campaign trail culture warrior. But her decision to carry to term her Down syndrome child established a special relationship with anti-abortion activists, and now Palin has transformed herself from a politician who was anti-abortion into the leading figure of the anti-abortion movement

“‘You just can’t escape it — she really is cut from a completely different cloth than most men, but also women, in politics,’ said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, which supports anti-abortion candidates. ‘She had the audacity in the eyes of the abortion rights world to actually have this child and then has the audacity to bring him along with her and feature him as a centrally valued person in their family.’”

Anybody who closely watches Sarah’s eyes or listens to Sarah’s words when she speaks can only come to one conclusion: that Sarah has thought long and hard about the role her faith plays in her life and how she perceives God in relation to the past and future of America, that in turn tells us that this woman is highly intelligent, reflective, and self-confident who cannot to be discounted or dismissed as a religious wacko.

In the clip isn’t she simply answering a question asked in a religious context about the relationship of prayer to political leadership? It isn’t clear that God’s leadership is any more practical than her idea of a “united nation” coming together to provide answers to its biggest problems. Yet many politicians make similar comments before pursuing legislation which nearly half the country disagrees with.

I knew that Sarah was running the day that I heard she was resigning from being governor. I had already called for her to not run for re-election and resign as early as she could and she is following the plan I laid out several months before. By the way I do not know Sarah Palin, never met her, and probably never will.

It only makes sense. Fred Thompson taught all prospective candidates for the Presidency a valuable lesson; in the 21st century you cannot jump into the presidential sweepstakes in the eleventh hour and expect to succeed. Running for president entails that one start to build a foundation at a minimum 18 months before the Jan 2012 primaries and preferably 2 years before.

By resigning Sarah is right on schedule. For those who invoke the appearance that Sarah could not possibly be running for POTUS because she lacks an organization or campaign infrastructure, what do you think Sarah has been doing in the past 4-5 months-twiddling her thumbs. Sure Sarah probably doesn’t have a superabundant number of people on her staff yet, but as Fred Thompson said several months ago there are 300-500 operatives in the lower 48 ready to jump on a plane to Alaska at a moment’s notice once they get the call from Sarah.

After the Going Rogue tour, Sarah will be able to get down to hiring more staff and getting her organization coordinated and battle-ready for the 2010 midterms and then the 2011-2012 primary season. And folks Sarah is right on schedule; even if she takes to June 2010 to get everything up and running she will not be behind the eight ball. Sarah is savvy, shrewd and judicious.

Here’s my advice to Romney and Huckabee supporters: keep underestimating Sarah Palin to your peril: Do you really believe that it is a fluke that Sarah has gotten this far or do you believe that Sarah is only a media creation that has no concrete support from the base?

The Going Rogue tour proves otherwise.

technopeasant on December 5, 2009 at 7:45 AM

What’s odd to me are those “conservatives” who are convinced she isn’t enough of an intellectual heavyweight to be POTUS. While that point of view is ridiculous on its face, what it really shows is their lack of Constitutional understanding.

A POTUS who understood their place in the Constitutional scheme is a self-check on wanton stupidity. In other words, the executive branch doesn’t have nearly as much power as even most current conservatives think it does.

The president needs good judgement and enduring wisdom, neither of which require a soaring IQ.

It is so refreshing to have finally a leader that openly, selflessly outs herself with God as a compass. That’s what I do most of the day-communicate with Heaven. I am Catholic so I am a bit ambivalent about focusing on one or two aspects of other religions’ belief systems, but hey–as long as they look up to God, I am happy with that.

I am still saddened to not see or hear more of Our Blessed Mother Virgin Mary. There is more to Her, many things She has done for us. I had a talk with a deacon about this. I asked “Why not honor Her and acknowledge that She was chosen by God to deliver Jesus? It’s not like He sprouted from a beanstalk”. He shrugged. We have no answers.

He has for me a Catholic bible; King James version does not have 12 chapters and these are missing. That was another conversation that was very interesting, enlightening I never thought I’d have. Gosh he went through all the Holy Bibles I have here (bilingual, Spanish, several in English passed down, etc) and dissected front, middle, back, and showed me the flaws. I have to pick up my copy.

Sorry if this topic is sensitive to you; just sharing what happened here at home. No matter what your belief is; simply, start from the beginning you wish and read on. Or ask the Lord what’s His word for you, and crack the Bible open. Where you first lay your eyes on, that’s where you should read. It is amazing.

ProudPalinFan on December 5, 2009 at 8:01 AM

Before this topic was posted I thought the odds that AP would post this thread would be the same chance that Tiger Woods would be discovered to have had only 3 mistresses-slim and none.

By the way mistress #4 I hear is about to come forth.

AP, wonders never cease. As a Palinista, I know how you feel about her. You can’t get her out of your brain. She is so riveting and intoxicating, isn’t she?

technopeasant on December 5, 2009 at 8:17 AM

A responsible journalist would not jump on any one Palin quotient and trump it as her sole calling card. Ben Smith did a good job in the headlined Politico piece on Palin. However, to say that “anti-abortion” is what Palin is all about would be as wrong as to say that she is all about drilling for oil and building the natural gas line from Alaska through Canada to the lower 48 states, or that she’s all about one of her children over another.

My personal admiration for Sarah Palin as a budding American statesman grows with her unique and positive handling of her “unprecedented” combined life experience.

Grant Sarah her self determination, and see what good comes of letting Sarah be Sarah. She actually LOVES Americans as much as she loves AMERICA and the Constitution. Her role as a leader is publicly acknowledged. But do not predetermine at this point the exact expectations of her future. Just let Sarah develop her gifts with support and gratitude that someone is out there plugging Constitutional COMMON SENSE for US. “Keep the Spirit!”

maverick muse on December 5, 2009 at 8:29 AM

If one understands how a self-reliant man of integrity and self-worth can be a benefit to society, then one can understand the basic way God’s grace is transmitted to society as well. By being holy, and knowing your worth and building your resistance to dependence and helplessness, the reservoir of your human spirit overflows to the benefit of all. That is the justification as I see it for a leader calling for prayer and fasting.

On the other hand, a leader might pervert this and call for sacrifice first, work first, help first. It sounds good, but as it seeks to heal the spirits of others, it ignores the spirit of the helper. With hollowness at the core, this only leads to addictive dependence. Rather than a society where goodness flows from the good, materials and coerced affirmations are drained off to feed the unquenchable thirst of those who cannot love themselves.

I think Sarah Palin realizes that you can’t help others unless you help yourself first; she knows that respect comes from within, not from something distributed by the government. This is the whole reason we value separation of powers, representation, and free market capitalism, because it counteracts, channels, converts, and deflects the wielding of power by an unfulfilled human spirit; it provides for good men and women to live good lives, without being trampled and tread upon by those who would wish to overpower us.

Savvy.

Our leaders need to better develop their gifts and be proud to make humble offerings along their way in life, “humble” because it took everything they had such as the widow’s mite or Job’s family and fortune, rather than destroying conservative unity in the fight to be king of the hill.

/Don’t encourage fans of the self-righteous twins. Those two carry a dark cloud of deceit everywhere they go that the blinding show lights just can’t eradicate. THEY don’t get along with others, unable to accept each other. THEY usurp good will as “all theirs” rather than share it. THEY put their hands on the sword and could not remove it from the stone. THEY had their shot manning their own campaigns, and they lost. Until their families undergo the same slaughter that Palin’s endured for America’s sake, matching what the Palin family has sacrificed simply for participating in the effort to right our American course, they stand as weenie wannabe warriors for America. Little Willow has more guts than either of those self-righteous twins. Face it, America. These two should learn how to cooperate with each other AND WITH THE REST OF US before they presume to lead anywhere other than circles in the desert (where they are) for 40 years.

I drove home yesterday from Plano (a 267 mile one way trip, so about 600 miles with additional driving) where Sarah Palin had her book signing. She is so much more beautiful in person than TV interviews portray. And, as is my character, I got tongue tied when I met her. She made an effort to shake everyone’s hand who had a book signed.

It was cold, we were tired, but it was completely worth it.

One thing is becoming more and more obvious…McCain and his handlers were so inept at their campaign, they had no idea who or what they really had in Sarah Palin.
It is almost painful to think how poorly she was handled…now that she is running her “campaign”, more and more are beginning to see how really committed, intelligent, caring, experienced she is.
McCain, you and your men wasted a great opportunity…you just didn’t get it.
Week by week, I am becoming more convinced she will be our next President…and she will be a good one, hated and despised by the left, loved by Americans.

You miss the point. Abortion is about murder and a slave

The murder is obvious. The slave owner mindset is about claiming ownership of another human being to the extent of having powers of life or death over that individual. The small minded slave owners of the past would have claimed the same…its about choice and their right to choose.

There wasn’t a pro choice advocate that applauded her not having an abortion…wait, one NOW woman, and Tammy Bruce, they did support her.
The rest of the journalistic pundits ridiculed her for having Trig.
You’re living in your own dream world…Huffpo (and dozens of her commenters) constantaly criticized her, Dowd critized her, Sheer critized her, the list is endless…

while parading them around, just used her Down Syndrome baby as another circus prop

Here is a hint, when posting an outright lie…make it more subtle then something that can be checked out so easily…you really look foolish.

The Internet is rife with brutal caricatures of Trig and hateful invective against Sarah – simply for opting her “right to choose”

Pro-choicers, are pro-abortionists…just ask Planned Parenthood if they think “choice” is really what they want.

Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, sent an urgent message this week to the group’s base asking for pro-abortion Catholics to defy the U.S. bishops

The president of Planned Parenthood says the nation’s largest abortion business will pursue making sure abortion coverage is in President Barack Obama’s health care plan

There is so much more to embarrassingly prove you are living in your own fantasy world…

You are 10000% correct.

If parents weren’t such sh*tty parents, then their sons and daughters would come to them with these issues.

If the choice is
(1) confidentiality so the kid actually gets help/advice
vs
(2) no confidentiality so the kid talks to nobody (does nothing about having an STD, getting an abortion through dubious means, etc)

Then the lesser of the two evils is (1)

It’s not ideal, but at least some people get help.

Here is a few more for you to digest: All from your democrats…I can post thousands, let me know when you have seen enough…

Isn’t it actually cruel to keep your child than abort it, knowing full well what the kids gonna go through? Doesn’t that make her a kind of monster in God’s eyes? My question to you is this:

Trig Palin is a burden to society and should have been aborted!

This baby should have never been allowed to live a life of suffering. Gov. Palin should have aborted the pregnancy and saved this person a life of difficulty.

Do you have children? They make mistakes and then they get scared. They are children. More often then not children don’t tell their parents things because they love them and don’t want them to be mad. Other times children are truly taken advantage of. You are quick to castigate the parents and then encourage behavior that withholds information that can only help them be better parents. I have a hard time believing that you think parental discretion is paramount for ear piercing but unnecessary in the area of life and health.

Cindy Munford on December 5, 2009 at 10:17 AM

I went to a wedding last night and my husband and I were seated with individuals involved in the Michigan Democratic party. We stayed out of the political conversation for obvious reasons, but Sarah Palin’s name came up. I found it interesting that one of the men at the table and his wife stated that they had never before voted Republican, but hoped Sarah would make a run for the whitehouse. He and his wife stated they would jump ship and campaign for her. All of the Dem’s at the table said if she runs, she wins… I find that worth noting.

Dave Rywall on December 5, 2009 at 9:35 AM

Dave, God is not a horrible entity. He loves you enough to give you and every other man free will to reciprocate. As for our horrible existence, it is a monster of our own making, yet even still, He provides a means of redemption in His Son, Jesus Christ. Freely offered and yours for the taking.

It seems pretty obvious to a lot of people that IF she wants to be POTUS, she will be.

That’s why everytime she looks or sounds great in interviews, the trolls heads explode.
It’s unintentionally funny to read their crazy posts.

If she continues to speak to and for the country, and connect with people all across this country, it’s a done deal if she wants it.

Pro-choice people are about choice, and supporting a woman’s choice, regardless of what that choice is. It’s not about creating some master race or aborting imperfect babies. It’s about CHOICE.

It’s ignorant Hotair strawman makers who claim pro-choicers want imperfect babies to be aborted.
Dave Rywall on December 5, 2009 at 9:23 AM

And Pro-Life people are about Life. – It is about Life.
The argument from the death panels is – it is a “woman’s body” – Talk about “strawman.”

A heart that is beating is deliberately stopped. Is it the woman’s – No! A woman doesn’t have two hearts – thus the heart must be that of somebody else. It isn’t the woman’s body – it is the baby’s body. The pro-death people have to try to obfuscate the obvious to legitimize their “morality.”

Sorry to burst the bubble of stupid,

Right on cue…Trolls are coming out from under the trash pile like maggots. What is it about Sarah Palin that makes them crazy? Just this week she said that Americans actually had a right to see BHO’s credentials, including a full and complete Birth Certificate. She speaks truth, faith and common sense, languages most American taxpayers understand quite well. Washington doesn’t get it. The tide is turning!

Dave Rywall, up early this saturday morning…several tall cups of coffee I see. Why don’t you push the keyboard back, stand up and stretch, get out of your pajamas and put on some clothes and your rarely used tennis shoes and take walk around your neighborhood….it’ll do ya good.

Tell the DNC/ACORN to take a hike for a change, that you’ll take the time off without pay. At this rate, you’re going to be a burnout on wheels by the time Sarah is being sworn in Jan. ’13.

dthorny on December 5, 2009 at 10:56 AM

This appears to be a targeted message for a religious audience.

I am not quite sure why I’m watching it, but it doesn’t seem to go at all with the text of the story.

In any case, her spiritual viewpoint is interesting. I also watched the Faith discussion panel last year with the candidates and found that to be interesting, although I sensed a kind of phoniness in Obama versus a much more reticent but honest sharing from Hillary. John struck me more like Hillary by the end.

Palin strikes me as sincere and reminds me a lot of some of the fundamentalist, Joyce what’s her name. I like her, too. There’s a kind of confidence that comes from faith. Huckabee has the same quality. Neither strike me as being overly heavy-handed about it.

What’s odd was that Obama did strike me as “using” his faith at times. By the end, I was pretty sure he was just using it politically to appear OK.

I’d much prefer leadership that is authentic and also who respects people enough to spot when they are being “played.”

:)

One also needs to be able to convey their message to the people, going around the media filter, and to convey one’s positive and patriotic outlook on what it means to be an American and where we need to go. Governor Palin has that ability in spades. When you look at who the lamestream media has touted as “soaring” intellects over the past several years (Clinton, Gore, Obowma) that hardly qualifies as a resume enhancer, does it?
Besides, Governor Palin is, from my view, well above average in the IQ department and, better yet, scores very highly on principles, patriotism and understanding of America’s place as leader of the free world.

Itchee Dryback on December 5, 2009 at 9:36 AM

Dave didn’t miss the point, he just didn’t agree with Marjorie Dannenfelser.

The murder is obvious. The slave owner mindset is about claiming ownership of another human being to the extent of having powers of life or death over that individual. The small minded slave owners of the past would have claimed the same…its about choice and their right to choose.

Except of course the Black slave’s body was independent from the White slave owner’s. In other words, the Black slave’s body was not in the body of the White slave owner.

But I’ll guess that realities like that are too much to bear for the mind of your average relativist.

pro-choicers wholeheartedly support Palin’s decision to have the DS child:–@2:23

Easy to say NOW. But the record holds a point referenced by Politico, despite any hedging now.

Palin’s allies have taken the argument a step further, suggesting that antipathy to her is based on the belief that she should have had an abortion rather than bearing her son.–Ben Smith

While she was carrying her unborn child, that IS how it was, sheer negativity to annihilate Palin permeating the news. Do reference the media record during the 2008 potus campaign if you claim otherwise, trolls. Now that Palin’s popularity is proven to be a constant factor rather than limited to McCain’s campaign duration, you hear the “we’re the tolerant radical choice for all” REVISIONIST attempt to amalgamate abortion with popular consensus that is bearing out to be anti-abortion given REAL SCIENCE that accounts for life consistently, vs. another scientific fraud that only allows the eugenics dogma which doesn’t recognize life at any stage other than an independent form in perfect health.

A lot of thoughtful and generous comments here on faith and Palin. It’s been a great morning read. Thanks.

I came to my affection for Palin from another direction — her fortitude in the face of the greatest assault of slander and hate I’ve seen in my life. But maybe that was just another manifestation of her faith. It certainly represents the story of our time. Palin is very important to us all, whether we know it or not.

That seems like a non sequitur.
Unless you’re arguing that the fetus is not a separate human. If that is your line of reasoning, what purpose does it serve to the continued functioning of the womans body?
You’re using the tactic of trying to invalidate an analogy by claiming it can only be valid if taken literally. Its an analogy.

But I’ll guess that realities like that are too much to bear for the mind of your average relativist.

Excellent insight. That is just how it works. My estimation and admiration for Governor Palin grows daily. When I met her in Tempe, I told her I would quit my job and go to work for her if she decides to run.

ReneePA on December 5, 2009 at 12:02 PM

When a woman of faith invokes God and Abraham Lincoln in the same breath she tells the world that she understands the duality of leadership: of velvet and glove.

Through prayer a leader is able to grasp the concept of humility and compassion but by the same token is able to have revealed to him/her that a tough or harsh decision has to be made. A true leader operates within this duality never forsaking one for the other or allowing one polar to predominate over the other.

It’s very encouraging to see so many people here really get it. A down to earth real American (Sarah) as opposed to the phony group of politicians that populate Washington. I’m tired of hearing the phonies speak out of both sides of their mouths. The fear of the Washington elites of this woman from Alaska of all places is palpable, you can feel it and hear it in most of them.

The elites have had their way with this country for way to long, time now for a change. A change back to what was a strong and viable country where every life was dear, those aged (which I am fast approaching), the infirm, the lives in the womb, and the rights of the Trigs of the world to exist.

Sarah is this change. You can bet that every scum from under every rock will appear anywhere her name is mentioned. Keep speaking from the heart Sarah, it makes your army grow from both ends of the political spectrum, make their heads explode from fright and make this old man happy once again.
