Doubling down: Obama now set to attend negotiation sessions at Copenhagen

posted at 8:35 pm on December 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

Initially he was only going to go the first week and put in some face time, a.k.a. vote “present,” but China and India have come to the table so he’s rescheduled for the big finale. Not that anyone seriously expected him to change his plans because of Climategate, which is now being (perfunctorily) investigated by the UN, but in case you harbored even the tiniest hope, let go.

Following bilateral meetings with the President and since the United States announced an emissions reduction target that reflects the progress being made in Congress towards comprehensive energy legislation, China and India have for the first time set targets to reduce their carbon intensity. There has also been progress in advancing the Danish proposal for an immediate, operational accord that covers all of the issues under negotiation, including the endorsement of key elements of this approach by the 53 countries represented at the Commonwealth Summit last weekend…

Based on his conversations with other leaders and the progress that has already been made to give momentum to negotiations, the President believes that continued US leadership can be most productive through his participation at the end of the Copenhagen conference on December 18th rather than on December 9th. There are still outstanding issues that must be negotiated for an agreement to be reached, but this decision reflects the President’s commitment to doing all that he can to pursue a positive outcome. The United States will have representation in Copenhagen throughout the negotiating process by State Department negotiators and Cabinet officials who will highlight the great strides we have made this year towards a clean energy economy.

Needless to say, if no deal results from a personal appearance by Holy Barry, Father of God, the great hope of the “international community,” it’ll be an even bigger blow to his prestige than the Olympics debacle. As for the terms of the prospective deal, sounds like we’re going to fight this war with half-measures too. Which, if you agree with The One’s Afghanistan critics, is getting to be a habit:

[T]he U.S. will propose a cut in emissions over the same time period in the range of 17 percent, regardless of the growth of its economy. For the U.S. to achieve the target it proposes, however, Congress will have to pass legislation to curb greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

The Senate has said it will not take up the measure until next year.

And even if it does, a 17 percent reduction by 2020 is lower than what scientists say is needed to avert the dangerous consequences of climate change.

Scientists say the industrial countries must slash carbon emissions by 25 to 40 percent by 2020 below 1990 levels to prevent the Earth from warming 2 degrees Centigrade (3.6F), the maximum to reduce the worst risks. Obama’s proposal — which matches a bill that passed the House in June — translates to a 4 to 5 percent reduction from 1990 levels.

Harry Reid’s going to sell the Senate on the urgent need to prevent global warming by reducing emissions to a level that … won’t prevent global warming? What am I missing?

So, if we do cut emissions and it has no effect, then what? Will the “scientists” find the lost data and announce, all is well. I guess we can always get our money back from the poorer countries…yeah.

Climategate is not getting legs, as far as I can tell. Plus, he’s going to slam through another stimulus bill soon.

Buckle up.

I think the Dems strategy is definitely to push through all major legislation they want, hope the opposition has fallen into the trap of exaggerating, people calm down and, hobble economically, until the economy recovers.

AnninCA on December 4, 2009 at 8:43 PM

ClimateGate is irrelevant!! This is not about climate. It is about destroying capitalism. Temperature, Shemperature. Just boost the price of energy as high as it can go so the economy collapses.

If there’s a chance he can come home from Copenhagen with some kind of commitment (even a meaningless one) from China/India, that’s his ticket to pushing cap-and-fade through Congress.

That’s all.

ManUFan on December 4, 2009 at 8:44 PM

Global warming has nothing to do with the environment.

It’s a means of diminishing the power of the nation-state, and putting it more under international governance.

And also about redistributing wealth according to socialist ideas of “fairness.”

The Met Office [meterological office] plans to re-examine 160 years of temperature data after admitting that public confidence in the science on man-made global warming has been shattered by leaked e-mails.

The new analysis of the data will take three years, meaning that the Met Office will not be able to state with absolute confidence the extent of the warming trend until the end of 2012.

The Met Office database is one of three main sources of temperature data analysis on which the UN’s main climate change science body relies for its assessment that global warming is a serious danger to the world. This assessment is the basis for next week’s climate change talks in Copenhagen aimed at cutting CO2 emissions.

The Government is attempting to stop the Met Office from carrying out the re-examination, arguing that it would be seized upon by climate change sceptics.

Interesting bit from London Times.

Sarkozy, however, criticized Obama’s decision to turn up for just one day at the beginning of the negotiations, on December 9, instead of the crucial final days of summit when all the other leaders would be crunching figures and concessions.

So he’s knuckling under or looking for glory. Maybe the Danish Speaker of Parliament can have a word with him:

The problem is that lots of people go around saying that the climate change we see is a result of human activity. That is a very dangerous claim,” Parliamentary Speaker and former Finance Minister Thor Pedersen (Lib) tells DR.

“Unfortunately I seem to experience that scientists say: ‘We have a theory’ – then that crosses the road to the politicians who say: ‘We know’. Who can be bothered to hear a scientist who says ‘I have a theory’ when politicians go around saying ‘I know’” Thor Pedersen says.

I certainly hope he fails again and people change their pablum-filled minds when they hear the truth about the biggest HOAX since we had to give up using Freon in order to save the ozone layer. The replacement for Freon is less efficient as a refrigerant and therefore more energy must be used to obtain and maintain the same cold temperature thereby increasing CO2 output to produce the extra electrical energy for A/C and refrigerators and freezers.
Ozone is a gas and it is either heavier than air and therefore will NOT RISE or it is lighter than air and it will RISE no matter what “scientists” say or do.

TruthToBeTold on December 4, 2009 at 11:27 PM

On topic, but far to the side in discussion, is a small proposed section of the Copenhagen treaty that deals with Patents. What this section roughly states is that any patent developed by any of the signees that can help in the cause for global warming, shall be transferred to all signees. This fascinating little tidbit could be used to usurp all developments by any individual US citizen or company for the greater good of the world. What a truly communist manifesto this treaty could become. The largest theft of private property, both todays and tomorrows, in the history of the world.

Think about this for just one second. If it was YOU that found a way to create usable energy, that process could NEVER be yours. Instead it would immediatly be transferred to the new communist/progressive/socialist world government. Individual property rights will be trampled under the boot of this new totalitarian world order.

Clearly, under these circumstances, there would have been no reason to have ever fought ANY of the world wars, or even the cold war. We might as well have let the totalitarians of those era’s win.

I’m sure Liberals consider climategate to be more Fox News Sensationalism, drummed up by birthers and Palinistas to counter the celebratory frenzy surrounding The Enlightened One FINALLY engages in the REALLY important causes of our age (globalism, eco-worship, sucking up to Islamo-facists, bowing and scraping before despots, etc).

But Obama is “just” a law professor and political upstart. His climate convictions are like Sean Penn’s foreign policy musings… politically biased and irrationally defended against all reason. To be wrong is to lose credibility, which is unacceptable. Obama’s a law expert Politician, McCain is a POW military man, and Algore is a Senator’s son who went to Divinity school.

No one faults them for not being climate scientists because we don’t need them to be climate scientists. We need them to discern and represent the public will, do this, and lead us in the narrow paths of prosperity. Advocating for issues outside of their expertise necessarily taints the science AND the politician. When Nixon declared war on drugs, Reagan appointed a Drug Czar, and Nancy told us all to Just Say NO, marijuana became a partisan divide, honest public conversation ceased, and the policy continues to fail. Was it worth it?

The President extended his Scandinavian vacation conference participation so he could be in the pictures and have his name associated with the wheeling and dealing over a worthless token deal with India & China that won’t do anything. Unless credible researchers and honest practitioners of any of the “cause sciences” refuse to be silenced, the self-important pols posturing on the tax payers dime in Denmark, and ideologue Pols like Barry, Scary, and Harry will never relent their power or voice.

Ed wrote that “The actions of the IPCC… created an atmosphere of groupthink… not science or truth. Any results coming from this arena have to be entirely suspect.
The AGW movement has been exposed as a religious belief and a political cash cow, not science.

I couldn’t agree more. I wonder how evolution science might have fared under political pressures, 24 hour news cycles, and a rabid researching blogosphere BEFORE it was 100 years entrenched. Responses from many “Darwinists” are as shrill and aggressively confrontational as AGW zealots.

I would say he has given up on trying to reach across any aisle, as time goes on, he will go further and further left.

That means the electric companies can control how much electricity we can use and then the price goes up. If we don’t have electricity, we can’t stay as warm in the winter. This will force us to get a windmill or solar power, all to the profit of GE. Do you have an extra $40,000 laying around, not to worry though, Dear Leader will give us a tax credit to help pay for it.

Bowbama is desperate for something he can call a win. Look for him, after a lot of photo-op bowing and scraping to Euros, to agree to a disasterously bad deal for the US. Then he has another “major speech” televised here at home declaring “unprecedented” victory a la Neville Chamberlain. And the country will greet the news by turning on him big time.

So is he now going to require two trips, one to pick up Peace Prize and the other to cure the fevered world?

I suspect that Climategate is going to be a lot like the ACORN scandal. More and more discredited scientist get ejected from there safe careers “harbors” OUTED, and the politicians who used their skewed data – throw them under the bus. I think Climategate will leak steadily. East Anglia hacked emails just the fist released to the public, and the man made global warming cult, dies a thousand deaths instead of a quick one.

Trying to put the genie back in the bottle or Al Gore sticking his finger in the dike :) It’s NOT going to work.

Oh, and this does help Palin. She’s already hit him on Cap & Tax, Climategate etc. If he goes and gets nothing, he looks (even more) like an ineffective leader.

If he does get something going to limit energy use/productivity, he just handed her another hammer to hit him with over the next 1-3 years.

Obowma in Copenhagen: Hey ya’ll, Nobel prize winner IN DA HOOOOOOUSE, woot, woot. Let’s git this dun to really jack up America before they understand what hit em. Yo, Yo, Yo.

So he’s going to Copenhagen on Friday Dec 18 to minimize news coverage, kinda like the Friday night bad news dump they do every week. But really, I expect them to manufacture some mini-crisis requiring his expert guidance so he can bail altogether.

BTW, wasn’t Nixon impeached for destroying evidence, covering up, obstruction?

jaime on December 4, 2009 at 10:07 PM

Nixon was not impeached.

So, if we do cut emissions and it has no effect, then what? Will the “scientists” find the lost data and announce, all is well. I guess we can always get our money back from the poorer countries…yeah.

d1carter on December 4, 2009 at 8:43 PM

More likely they will just apply a new fudge factor. Declare that the first decrease had a measurable effect, but more sacrifice is needed.
