Video: Behar says only right-wingers can be hypocrites, or something

posted at 5:00 pm on December 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Somehow, this would be more compelling coming from anywhere but Hollywood, where infidelity floats a significant portion of the entertainment medium — which brings us right back to Tiger Woods. Joy Behar tries to make a point that isn’t entirely out of left field, or Left field, for that matter: family-values politicians who commit infidelities, such as hiking the Appalachian trail, are most definitely hypocrites when they do. That doesn’t let liberals off the hook for hypocrisy when cheating on their spouses, though, as Elizabeth Hasselbeck points out in this clip from The View — nor does it apply to those who don’t participate in the political process at all despite having a huge media platform (via Greg Hengler):

Most of the Tiger Woods commentary is nonsense, and this is possibly the nadir of the cottage industry. Tiger doesn’t do politics anyway, which has already earned him criticism from African-American athletes such as Jim Brown and Bill Russell for selfishness, if not hypocrisy. If he did, then it would make sense to discuss the public exposure of infidelity in a political context. As it is, it’s about as political as any celebrity having gotten caught cheating on a spouse.

That doesn’t let Tiger off the hook for his (apparently) multiple “transgressions,” of course, and he monetizes his squeaky-clean image
for enormous personal gain, so public discussion of it is not out of bounds, either. However, it hardly seems like news that multi-millionaire athletes have groupies, and that they let temptation get the better of them. What’s news is that we let that squeaky-clean public relations image take root so deeply that we feel betrayed, where with other athletes we’d probably just shrug and chalk it up as typically bad behavior.

Meanwhile, Behar wants to use it as a way to beat up on conservatives who don’t cheat while letting Tiger off the hook for his “transgressions.” If one can find a better example of hypocrisy, be sure to forward it to us.

Wait… let me get this right. The left isn’t about Moral Fascism?

First, one could argue that the Left is now the Moral Police. Telling people that the MUST pay for illegals’ health insurance, pay for carbon off-sets, and in general “be responsible.”

Second, let’s thinks back to martyr Spitzer. You know, the guy that went after others for prostitution… That is the definition of hypocrisy.

Maybe Helen Thomas is Joy Behar on steroids. Think about it and have your girl call my girl.

On this one point, I totally agree with Behar…

the left/liberals have no morals, so therefore they can do whatever they want, no matter how gross, corrupt, despicable… the sky is the limit… with no shame or regret.

That is the wonder of being a liberal…. you can be the slimiest person on earth and not feel ashamed of it…

i.e. rape a 13 year old and call it art…

Dark Eden on December 3, 2009 at 5:11 PM

The answer is all of the above, right?

chaswv on December 3, 2009 at 5:18 PM

why do we pay attention to this show?

stevezilla on December 3, 2009 at 5:19 PM

Three quick points:
First, regardless of whether Tiger Woods is a “public figure”, it turns out that he is not a “Tiger”…he’s a snake. His politics are irrelevant.

Secondly, the story itself may be largely irrelevant. Really, how are the private lives of Mr. and Mrs. Woods any of my business? Thinking of their kids for a moment, maybe it would be better to leave their parents to resolve this privately.

Thirdly, Behar’s comment is something I have thought about, though not in a way favourable to the left. Quite simply, it seems that it is those on the right who have standards and seek to defend them. As all humans do, they fail, thus subjecting themselves to a hard emotion: “shame”.When they fall, they are exposed to the accusation of “hypocrite”.

On the left, however, standards seem less visible. Thus, shame is also absent. Woody Allen, Roman Polanski and their ilk are shameless. By rights they should not be able to show their faces in public, yet they not only stay in the public eye, they are brazen about it, and have highly vocal supporters to boot.

They can’t be shamed.

Obviously, in the absence of standards it is hard to find hypocrisy (perhaps if we found Hugh Hefner being loyal to one “wife” some might see him as a hypocrite…apart from that, however…)

So, Joy, congratulations. You and your side can go through life hypocrisy free. Thereafter?…well time will tell, I guess.

But it goes unmentioned that the Left wants to run every single aspect of the rest of people’s lives. They want to tell you what to drive, live, work, eat and procreate while not adherring to many of their “goals”. But that’s okay.

No he’s not off the hook, but monetizing his squeaky clean image? As one who follows golf, I’ve never thought of Woods as squeaky clean. He’s spewed enough F and S bombs on the golf course to counter that image, and his curtness with the media and the public doesn’t help. The squeaky-clean myth developed not because he portrayed himself as saint, but b/c he was, for the most part, a blank check; i.e. no one had any reason to believe otherwise. It’s one thing to capitalize on a false narrative, quite another to remain silent while everyone else leaps to conclusions.

Gone are the days when an athlete or otherwise public figures endorsment meant that they personally put their reputation on the line for that item. This day and age a public endorsment is used as name recognition…period. All the privacy and work he put into his squeaky clean image is shot….but it wont affect his bank account.——Providing his marraige holds together through this——

Koa on December 3, 2009 at 6:29 PM

family-values politicians who commit infidelities, such as hiking the Appalachian trail, are most definitely hypocrites when they do.

I strongly disagree with this sentiment.

Hypocrisy is not falling short of your values. If that were the case, the only people who could claim not to be hypocrites would be those people that have no values at all.

Hypocrisy is claiming to have values and beliefs that you don’t actually have.

If a family values politician proclaims family values because they think it is what will get them elected, but, in reality, they think that family values are bunk and do not actually add any value to society, that politician would be a hypocrite.

Simply falling short of a high ideal makes you a tragic figure, perhaps, but not a hypocrite.
