Poll: 59% think AGW scientists may have falsified data
posted at 12:15 pm on December 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The fallout of the University of East Anglia CRU e-mails threatens to smother the credibility of anthropogenic global-warming advocates — and the UN along with them. In a new survey conducted after the exposure of UEA-CRU’s behind-the-scenes chicanery, the Rasmussen poll indicates that a majority of respondents think AGW scientists have lied about their data. Only 26% think that such dishonesty and fraud is either not very likely or not at all likely:
Most Americans (52%) believe that there continues to be significant disagreement within the scientific community over global warming.
While many advocates of aggressive policy responses to global warming say a consensus exists, the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 25% of adults think most scientists agree on the topic. Twenty-three percent (23%) are not sure. …
Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Americans say it’s at least somewhat likely that some scientists have falsified research data to support their own theories and beliefs about global warming. Thirty-five percent (35%) say it’s Very Likely. Just 26% say it’s not very or not at all likely that some scientists falsified data.
And the news actually gets worse. Rasmussen indicates that the skepticism over AGW credibility predates the CRU scandal:
This skepticism does not appear to be the result of the recent disclosure of e-mails confirming such data falsification as part of the so-called “Climategate” scandal. Just 20% of Americans say they’ve followed news reports about those e-mails Very Closely, while another 29% have followed them Somewhat Closely.
That’s a lower level of interest than has been shown about the White House party crashers and suggests that Americans have had their doubts about the science of global warming for some time.
Despite the protestations of “consensus” from the Obama administration — reiterated by Robert Gibbs yesterday — only a quarter of Americans actually believe that a global consensus exists among scientists. Only 22% believe that the UN, which sponsored the IPCC report based in large part of UEA-CRU findings, is a credible resource for AGW. And only 15% of all respondents think AGW is a higher priority than rebuilding the economy and creating jobs, against 71% who believe jobs and the economy should take priority.
Obviously, that latter number does not just include Republicans. There is a remarkable unanimity across all demographics in this question. Democrats, for instance, prioritize jobs over AGW action, 65/21, almost matching independents at 68/18. For both men and women, the numbers are more than 4-1. The highest rating AGW gets in any demographic is women under 40, where the split goes 71/25 in favor of jobs and the economy.
The numbers on credibility for AGW scientists are almost as bad. Every age demographic has a majority who believe that it is either somewhat or very likely that AGW researchers have “falsified data,” as the question was asked. Independents split 2-1, 54/27, and even a plurality of Democrats now have misgivings about scientific ethics in AGW, 48/32. Every racial/ethnic category has a majority believing in the likelihood of falsified AGW data, as well as every income demo, every age demo, and even every employment demo — including 56% of government employees.
This makes the job-killing cap-and-trade bill a political nightmare for Democrats, especially once the CRU scandal really captures the public imagination. No one will support higher energy prices and the economic handicaps they will impose for a cause rife with perceived falsehoods, misrepresentations, and flat-out fraud. The cap-and-trade bill has already been considered close to dead, thanks to Harry Reid’s rescheduling of it to the spring of an election year. This should convince all but the most radical Democrats on Capitol Hill to give up the effort entirely.

No this poll is not restricted in scope to the CRU data fudge job. Surely the number would be like 79% were that the case.
This poll questions the whole sheeebang, AGW in General, the whole movement, all research centers.
Most people don’t realize that even when the data fudging and peer review goon-thuggery are excluded these so-called researchers (around the globe) are STILL not doing real science.
More like they are doing impressionistic interpretation of stochastic noise in a quest for planetary nirvana.

Slate finally covered this story under the title (paraphrased) “Does the CRU throwing away data matter”?
In the article they of course failed to mention the stifling of peer review and the hiding of the decline. But they did end it with the amazing assertion that (paraphrasing again) “skeptics had cited the CRU because they were showing less warming than other agencies over the past ten years… that is until the skeptics decided the data was tainted.”
Conclusion… the real losers in the CRU fraud are the skeptics who cited the data. The liberal mind is both diseased and wretched.

People don’t want to doubt their priesthood. And make no mistake: scientists, medical doctors and all such representatives of philosophical materialism are the modern day priesthood. People reflexively believe that they are moral, honest and doing what is in “society’s” best interests.
Most are, just like most carpenters and electricians are moral and honest. But people are somehow shocked when scientists turn out to be cheats, liars and avaricious careerists.
Folks, there’s big, big money in falsifying data for political purposes, and scientists get greedy just like everyone else.

The stars really seem to be aligning for this one to break loose and be the Teapot Dome of our generation – and SO much time, effort, credibility and money has been flushed into this scam, I don’t see how the Dems will survive the backlash from this, and the other things that will rush out of the floodgates when and if the tide turns on them.
Remember – Watergate started with a bungled burglary. And this is more than just some petty political sniping in progress. This has corruption, graft, greed, and, oh yes, a racially discriminative angle that is absolutely loathsome and sitting there like a cow waiting for slaughter.
This is the ‘hold the phone’ moment of our generation – the Aussies have already keened onto that. This is going to be a FUGLY election year for democrats.

Just as with ACORN, Barbara Boxer wants to punish the hacker. Is’nt it funny that no one has been pushing to find out who it is? No one has followed the trail of the computer that sent the info. You know that the BBC knows because they got the origional emails.
I will bet that next week during Copenhagen, the person I expect a whistleblower will come out to further embarrass world leaders. Obama being stupid enough to run over there of course will be one of them. It is too quiet. Something is going on there.

I amazes me how many are still saying they think the earth is still warming.
The science says it hasn’t for the past 10 years. Why did even Jonah Goldberg say he thinks the Earth is still warming? What is that based on? Computer models based on faked science?
Ten years, and presumably the ten years that have been measured most carefully in all the years past, say warming has stopped. Or never really happened.
We all need to rethink this thing beginning to end. I don’t even think the earth is warming anymore.
I used to–now I don’t.
For about twenty years there was a warming trend. Now there isn’t.

Unfortunately, there is an emotional explanation of why those who are either uninformed or under-informed because of their chosen news sources wouldn’t believe the AGW crowd was being honest.
PappaMac @ 12:23 PM nailed it. When the folks are faced with the reality that the climate doesn’t match the story and the main characters of that story are acting like hypocrites, there is a strong repulsion that occurs.
So, I wouldn’t place a large wager on the electorate starting to think about issues before voting.

So, even if the MSM had covered the scandal wall-to-wall, it couldn’t have been reflected in this pre-existing survey.

I am far from a computer expert, but I remember reading that whoever sent the emails, used a Russian server. Perhaps they (Russians) aren’t allowing an investigation into their servers? I also heard the other day, that whoever emailed these documents, etc…did so, a few months back, and everyone they emailed them to, newspapers, networks…just sat on them. Didn’t report anything. So they knew, but didn’t report then either.
I’m kind of hopefull on this. That so many polled, feel this way, and felt this way prior to the emails, is hopefull, that more people than not, know about this. Just because the msm isn’t covering it, doesn’t mean there aren’t other resources. Word of mouth is a strong one as well. Tell EVERYONE you know, and it spreads like wild fire.
capejasmine on December 3, 2009 at 1:29 PM
Computer models are noted for not being the most accurate forecasters. The interesting thing is that is all these “fake, but accurate” scientists used. Then they hid or destroyed data. It seemed that the scientific method was an anomoly to these scientists. Something to be used as a guideline. This surely is not going to get you consistent results. Is it any wonder that they hid the “bad” news for them and manipulated results? Snake oil salesmen. They have stolen billions of our dollars and it will be years before anyone can trust any report that any scientist makes. The honest ones had better call out their dishonest collegues and do it fast. Science, knowledge, and progress are at stake.

It’s not that Climategate was singular event that eviscerated the Left’s credibility on Global Warming.
It’s credibility has been damaged for some time now.
It could be that people are noticing that temperatures haven’t gone up, and hurricanes haven’t gotten worse, etc.
Or could it be that the Eco-Statists disingenuously changed it from ‘Global warming’ to ‘Climate Change’.
Hopefully Climategate will be the final nail in the coffin of the Global Warming Scam.

Shrewd thinkers here at HotAir would be compelled to contact their state representatives and openly question the scientific integrity of their state university climate labs that receive public funds.
The bloodletting would further hemorrhage the university system by opening a dialogue on the process of awarding tenure and grant funding to professors.
The university system is a guild from where liberals launch attacks upon the free society, reason and logic. Climategate is a crisis that affords us an opportunity (a la Rahm) to deliver hammer blows upon the liberal system that mocks conservatives.
I urge my friends here that we need to now become the infantry and put our guns into the fight. Each of you in PA, VA and other places where these climatologists work and are funded by public dollars has an opportunity to openly question the veracity and honesty of the scientific research that we pay for. Demand answers from your state legislatures, demand answers from the state board of regents, demand answers for the tuition increases that are paying for questionable science.
Lock ‘n load.
Make your assault.
