Palin: Obama’s birth certificate is fair game; Update: Transcript added; Update: Palin responds
posted at 10:44 pm on December 3, 2009 by Allahpundit
At 7:45, your quote of the day. Something for (almost) everyone here: For the left, smoking-gun proof that she’s a fringe character, and for Birthers, smoking-gun proof that their concerns are mainstream. As for righties like me and Ed (and Glenn Beck) who think this particular science is well settled, tomorrow should be a fun media day.
I wonder if she realized when she said this that it’s going to follow her around.
Update: Some people are commenting that they can’t load the clip, so here’s a transcript.
Would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?
I think the public, rightfully, is still making it an issue. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bother to make it an issue ’cause I think there are enough members of the electorate who still want answers.
Do you think it’s a fair question to be looking at?
I think it’s a fair question, just like I think past associations and past voting record — all of that is fair game. You know, I’ve got to tell you, too: I think our campaign, the McCain/Palin campaign didn’t do a good enough job in that area. We didn’t call out Obama and some of his associates on their records and what their beliefs were and perhaps what their future plans were. And I don’t think that that was fair to voters to not have done our jobs as candidates and as a campaign to bring to light a lot of the things that now we’re seeing made manifest in the administration.
I mean, truly, if your past is fair game and your kids are fair game, certainly Obama’s past should be. I mean, we want to treat men and women equally, right?
Hey, you know, that’s a great point, in that weird conspiracy-theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn’t my real son. And a lot of people say, “Well you need to produce his birth certificate! You need to prove that he’s your kid!” Which we have done. But yeah, so maybe we could reverse that and use the same [unintelligible]-type thinking on them.
Update (Ed Morrissey): Late last night, Palin responded on her Facebook page in a post called “Stupid Conspiracy Theories”:
Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask… which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.
Well, the best way not to get tagged as a Birther is to refrain from saying that people are “rightfully making it an issue” and that the only reason that she would avoid doing that herself is because “there are enough members of the electorate who still want answers.” It’s the same thing as Truthers saying that all they’re doing is “asking questions.” The answers have already been provided; they just reject them because they’re married to their conspiracies.
I think Palin just discovered the First Rule of Blogs: Don’t feed the trolls.

Why is David 2.0 a piece of trash for asking for the records? I for one would like to see the classes 0bama took, the teachers he had, the organizations he belong to in college. I would like to see his thesis. This man (and I use that term loosely) is the elected (again, I use the term loosely) leader of the United States. The Fourth Estate failed in their job of vetting the candidates for the American People because they were too busy kissing 0bama’s rear end trying to make ‘history’
If anything, people who voted for 0bama and still defend him are trash(and complete idiots) at best, at worse, guilty of treason to the United States and should be dealt with in full accordance to the law with full penalty applied if found guilty.

Have to agree with that, the way Palin just faded away into obscurity, certainly not mentioned or referenced or targeted by the White House, demorats, or liberals in general on a daily basis.
Bishop on December 3, 2009 at 11:12 PM
Yes, but this was a pretty major issue – it’d be like if Obama were caught off-guard by a truther question. How does she not have a good answer to this question by now?
Proud Rino on December 3, 2009 at 11:12 PM
AP, you may not like it, but the “science” of President Obama’s birth certificate was “settled” by the same types of people who “settled” the science of climate change. And just like climate change, that doesn’t make it untrue, it just makes it unsettled.
Knott Buyinit on December 3, 2009 at 11:12 PM
…or she’s barely heard anything about it and hasn’t given it any thought.
MadisonConservative on December 3, 2009 at 11:12 PM
Even Ben Smith. LOL Exactly!
And might I add, I’m no birther on Obama at all but people who think freak at the idea of examining a birth certificate need to realize that John McCain’s was examined 7 ways to Sunday by the media tracking down every blasted factoid on the thing.
KittyLowrey on December 3, 2009 at 11:12 PM
Well I doubt she is a birther. But this might be a sign of more hit & miss political instincts.

Yawn. Pawlenty & Daniels are never going to be the nominee. Get over it.
Nobody cares about this except the die-hard Palin haters and/or the Pawlenty/Romney/Daniels supporters.
Yeah, like Republicans will not support Palin because she said she wasn’t going to raise it herself but didn’t object others raising questions about something 58% of Republicans believe.

Oh, I agree, she’s very popular. She’ll sell millions of books and do very well with a certain percentage of the population. But she lost the White House. Forever.
Proud Rino on December 3, 2009 at 11:13 PM
It’s just a common sense answer. Sure people want to know. I still have doubts in my mind. Where is his passport? Where is his actual birth certificate? It doesn’t keep me up at night but it also has never been settled.

The belief that the government orchestrated 9/11 is no more a major issue than the belief that Obama isn’t a citizen, because the vast majority of people either haven’t heard of it or don’t care, and consider the movement nuts.

To the left not believing in Global Warming makes one a fringe character, so who cares.
Each of you, for himself, by himself and on his own responsibility, must speak. And it is a solemn and weighty responsibility, and not lightly to be flung aside at the bullying of pulpit, press, government, or the empty catchphrases of politicians. Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, and which course is patriotic and which isn’t. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let man label you as they may. If you alone of all the nation shall decide one way, and that way be the right way according to your convictions of the right, you have done your duty by yourself and by your country- hold up your head! You have nothing to be ashamed of.

I would like to see Mitch enter the fray. The guy has done some good things in IN. Property taxes are 50% less in IN than IL. When the local governments said they needed more money or else they will cut police, fire, and teachers. Mitch called their bluff and told them to deal with the cuts. Mitch is not going to spend more money then they expect to raise via taxes.

So, the “wisdon” here is that Obama, as a born dual citizen, meets the clear constitutional requirment of being a ‘natural born citizen’, even in the face of statements by the founders… and the guy who wrote the 14th amendment… and the SUPREME COURT?
All of whom said that the ONLY clear standard for Natural born was Born on American Soil, OF American Citizen Parents?
I guess I am too much of an origionalist to understand why this is NOT somthing which should be looked at.
Romeo13 on December 3, 2009 at 11:16 PM
I guess I don’t get this whole birth certificate issue. Why is it an offense to ask him to show his birth certificate? He shows it. It’s done, it’s over. I suppose the game is to use it as a way to ridicule people who ask about it. Well, ridicule on, there doesn’t seem to be any sanity aboubt this issue anyway.

Curious how I keep hearing that same rant day after day after day after ever-lovin’ day, as if those who have tossed Palin into history’s dustbin aren’t convinced she won’t manage to find a way back out.
She’s a quitter and a moron, yet there is no other topic here at HA which draws the left to a thread like Sarah Palin the irrelevant has-been.

“You know, politically speaking, if I die, I die. So be it” – Governor Palin
This isn’t an issue, and won’t be in the long run. Sure, the media will spin it up to first slot news tomorrow as “Palin is a Birther,” but they do that anyhow whenever she sneezes.
Enoxo on December 3, 2009 at 11:17 PM
^ And before that it was “Palin was finished when she said ‘I can see Russia from my house!’” or “Palin was finished when she couldn’t name a newspaper she reads!” or “Palin was finished when Levi Johnston did his thing!” or “Palin was finished when she appeared in that RW spread!” Good God, the number of times I’ve heard that this woman is finished…
ddrintn on December 3, 2009 at 11:17 PM
Watch Palin survive this.
All you eeyores are ridiculous. She’s making a comparison of the idiocy of the left questioning the legitimacy of her child to the birthers. Since it was such “fair game” for people of the MSM to question her son’s “real birth mother” then Obama’s birth certificate if fair game.
Good Lord, you guys make a big deal without actually listening to the statements and thinking before you comment.
cubachi on December 3, 2009 at 11:17 PM
No, she lost the White House when she resigned the Governor’s office.
Proud Rino on December 3, 2009 at 11:17 PM
Yes, as settled as the science of AGW. You and Morrissey need to get off your asses and post your proof of Obama’s birth place. Please explain why he shouldn’t be required to produce his original birth certificate. In the meantime stop using the derogatory word birther to describe people who want to see qualifying documentation. Using birther is the same tactic as using the word denier to describe people who are sensibly sketical about the theory of AGW.
Truthers believe in an inane conspiracy theory. It’s ridiculous to describe as birthers those who merely want to see the birth certificate signed by the delivering doctor. If you can’t distinguish between the rationality of these two groups, then you aren’t very bright, or fair minded.
I don’t know where Obama was born. I’d like the issue cleared up. Post your proof. Or shut up.

I fail to see how her answer to this question showcases her lack of political instincts or warrants a thread at all.
Palin was asked a question, and being on the side of the people, said that they had the right to question and investigate the matter, which they do — it’s what should be done for every president. Given that being a natural born citizen is a requirement to be president of the US, it is relevant.
Personally, I believe Obama was born in Hawaii, but the secrecy surrounding his early life including his college transcripts, is astounding. People with nothing to hide are transparent, and Obama has been anything but.
In this case, Palin was simply asserting that people have the right to question whatever they deem worthy, and that anything and everything is fair game (which is true for public figures, especially politicians).

Mister Ghost on December 3, 2009 at 11:19 PM
I think people are blowing what she said out of proportion. I think she means if the citizens of the US have concerns about something they have a right to question it. I think what she said is a non issue. People won’t change their minds on what she said in this interview about the birth certificate. If they do they really weren’t behind her in the first place.
Brat4life on December 3, 2009 at 11:19 PM
I’m sure she’s heard of it. Especially if she’s heard about Sully, who is …less vocal on the right, then some of the Birthcert people (even had the attempted purge of WND on the right). But I was been sarcastic. I thought she artfully sidestepped it, not got jelly-legged.
Spirit of 1776 on December 3, 2009 at 11:19 PM
I believe that he was born in Hawaii; however, it just seems so strange that he won’t release the long form certificate, or his college transcripts, or thesis; for someone so transparent he sure hides a helluva lot!
If I was running for President I would gladly make my long form certificate available. What’s the big deal?

Yawn. Pawlenty & Daniels are never going to be the nominee.
I live in Indiana, and Mitch Daniels beat the Democrat who ran against him for Governor by 17 points. I think he would be a pretty good candidate.
The thing I don’t want to see is the Republicans tear each other apart in the primaries and then refuse to come together behind the winner. So maybe we should not start drawing lines just yet.

I’m failing to see this as a “gotcha” moment. It seems a really even-handed way to deal with fair game in politics (something she’s been burned by) and to carefully acknowledge those in the electorate with questions.
I don’t really care one way or another. I personally think we have more immediate issues to tend to than his BC…but, if asked a direct question, I’d probably say something similar.

Palin: we need to close the borders. They are called illegal aliens for a reason and if they are not going to follow the rules they should not be in our country. It’s pretty simple I ratched that one down to the simple answer because its an easier answer than some politicians want it to make it be. you close the borders. You get more agressive about cracking down on the illegal aliens and we take it serious what our border patrol officers are trying to do

I think Obama likes to see people make an issue of it. And if he did produce the long form, it would not satisfy people any more than the short form or the assurances from the state of Hawaii or the birth announcements in the old papers. People could just as easily say the long form is a forgery if they wanted to. That is the problem with this sort of thing, it is hard to know when to stop. Look at the complete fool Andrew Sullivan made out of himself when he refused to believe Sarah Palin gave birth to her last child.

My understanding is that Palin does support a path to citizenship for some illegals, but she thinks border security is a priority.

All I can tell you are her words. which are:
Question: Please ask sarah her position on illegal aliens and closing our southern border. thank you.

Quite. But if you are concerned about equivalencies, I think she was hurt by similar claims – the emails about book bannings, creationism as school policy, penquins in slave labor that sort of thing. Matt Damon brought this up on National TV. My point being, that lies were pushed forward and that definitely helped define her. On that was a bigger scale then Sully.

As I always say, I had to produce a SS card, Birth Certificate (A brand new one from the state with a stamp, no Hospital one) and Picture ID (My Drivers License) to get a ……new Drivers License, yet this guy doesn’t need anything to become the Pres?
Just for the sake of everyone being the same, not have some people above others, shouldn’t this have been done? Done before he was even allowed to run for office?
Following the law now makes some a fringe element?

Obviously. But who cares? We’ve elected C students and dudes that have completely failed out of college ex: Gore, Cheney, et al. I don’t get the blackout. Even if he did do bad, so what? People are so willing to give him a pass, it is mind-boggling that they would hide this. Young people do stupid things, etc. etc. So simple to explain away. So what gives?
