Palin: Obama’s birth certificate is fair game; Update: Transcript added; Update: Palin responds

posted at 10:44 pm on December 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

At 7:45, your quote of the day. Something for (almost) everyone here: For the left, smoking-gun proof that she’s a fringe character, and for Birthers, smoking-gun proof that their concerns are mainstream. As for righties like me and Ed (and Glenn Beck) who think this particular science is well settled, tomorrow should be a fun media day.

I wonder if she realized when she said this that it’s going to follow her around.

Update: Some people are commenting that they can’t load the clip, so here’s a transcript.

Would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?

I think the public, rightfully, is still making it an issue. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bother to make it an issue ’cause I think there are enough members of the electorate who still want answers.

Do you think it’s a fair question to be looking at?

I think it’s a fair question, just like I think past associations and past voting record — all of that is fair game. You know, I’ve got to tell you, too: I think our campaign, the McCain/Palin campaign didn’t do a good enough job in that area. We didn’t call out Obama and some of his associates on their records and what their beliefs were and perhaps what their future plans were. And I don’t think that that was fair to voters to not have done our jobs as candidates and as a campaign to bring to light a lot of the things that now we’re seeing made manifest in the administration.

I mean, truly, if your past is fair game and your kids are fair game, certainly Obama’s past should be. I mean, we want to treat men and women equally, right?

Hey, you know, that’s a great point, in that weird conspiracy-theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn’t my real son. And a lot of people say, “Well you need to produce his birth certificate! You need to prove that he’s your kid!” Which we have done. But yeah, so maybe we could reverse that and use the same [unintelligible]-type thinking on them.

Update (Ed Morrissey): Late last night, Palin responded on her Facebook page in a post called “Stupid Conspiracy Theories”:

Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask… which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.

Well, the best way not to get tagged as a Birther is to refrain from saying that people are “rightfully making it an issue” and that the only reason that she would avoid doing that herself is because “there are enough members of the electorate who still want answers.” It’s the same thing as Truthers saying that all they’re doing is “asking questions.” The answers have already been provided; they just reject them because they’re married to their conspiracies.

I think Palin just discovered the First Rule of Blogs: Don’t feed the trolls.

I get it. That’s an insuation of homosexuality. Do you often impute homosexuality to others? How often do you find yourself thinking about homosexuality?

Also: Are these thoughts concurrent with some of your other expressed ideation of family, etc.? How often?

voxpopuli on December 4, 2009 at 12:46 PM

Boy, I really did get inside your head.

Jim Treacher on December 4, 2009 at 12:48 PM

That is a huge, huge issue. It doesn’t make much legal difference whether Trig is Sarah’s or not, but if the Hawaii DOH, the DNC, Congress, Chief Justice Roberts and the entire judiciary, and every Secretary of State and law enforcement person in the country is willing to screw us over documentation that should be absolutely basic to a post-9-11 society…. then how can we believe we could ever get out of the crap that these crooks have put us through, or that they won’t just do something even worse if we escape the current crap they’re trying to shove down us?

Here’s my own political perspective. It depends.

What people think of as “lies” is usually not, to me. It’s rarely a case of deliberate lying. It usually is a case of differing perspectives.

Even the WMD, which actually had real consequences, was, in my opinion, a case of having to choose what “evidence” to believe. It wasn’t a case of deliberately lying.

Politicians make their case. The fact is that nobody is God but God. The “truth” is NOT available to mortals, and there is always some disagreement on perspectives.

Was WWII really won? I can cite people who think that the rebirth of Japan and Germany indicates otherwise. That’s a silly illustration, but you get my point.

I think it’s far more productive to pay attention to overall evidence. To me? I don’t need some birther story to clue me in as to how much Obama spins things. I see it often. His claim to transparency doesn’t work with me in the least.

Palin’s “moments” actually are quite a bit more reassuring to me on that level.

But that still has zip to do with politics, in my opinion. I think what matters is the actual policies/agendas/and implementation skills.

Character counts, to a point. Likeability counts, to a point.

But what matters in my own life? The actual decisions.

I do not assent that an impeachment process would be the end of our Constitutional Republic. That’s actually a stupid argument to try out to cover rolling over. A better argument could be made that to permit Obama’s dissolution of the Constitution, recreating our nation into a Marxist state as he is, will bring about the very chaos that you fear to confront. Your points espouse defeatism and fear. I don’t ascribe to submitting to authoritarians as they move in; rather, that’s the best time to keep THEM off balance while organizing for the impeachment or legal means to inhibit their legislation. The most vulnerable point of an invasion such as Obama’s agenda is at the moment that it begins. You neglect to consider the catastrophic destruction that will result from Obama’s full term and full agenda including his atrocious “leadership” in Afghanistan. As per why HotAir pundits espouse what they do, it’s what they think. And when there’s a major point of contention, particularly tagging the scientific process of research and discover with a smear in order to censor via intimidation, defenders of the Constitution either take a stand and make their views known, or forever submit to everything Marxist.

maverick muse on December 4, 2009 at 12:32 PM

Quite the contrary. I think revealing the truth and ending the leftist assault before we become a totalitarian state is a good thing. I was simply saying Ed and AP possibly fear being the causal factor in a s### storm of epic proportions and that their fear outweighs any need they feel to save the nation. Sorry, defeatism isn’t in my nature and I’m ready for any fights ahead. My only real point of contention is in saying that an impeachment process wouldn’t be an end to our Republic. What impeachment process? The left has the executive and legislative branch. If they went to all the trouble of getting an ineligible immigrant into the Presidency not so sure they’ll just give it up lightly. If it comes out that Obama isn’t eligible my supposition is that the left will give up any appearance of legality they may have. If their goal is to destroy and takeover why would destroying the rule of law and taking over be objectionable to them? We won’t get to the peaceful impeachment process.

Same gay-liberal-RINO rectal-centricity, so, Yeah. Thus the incessant hem-wringing about Palin. And attempts to impugn her by any contrivance.

Sort of like the perversion of using a Rush clip about 3rd parties to try and discredit the resurgent conservative movement within the GOP.

rayra on December 4, 2009 at 12:57 PM

Here I’m going to disagree with you at HOTAIR again. First, whether he was born here or not means nothing anymore. That boat sailed. However, the lack of response to the question is troublesome. If your are the administration why resist? Because you think you are better than the people asking? Why not kick it loose and settle the question? Are you thinking the more people question the facts the more people like HOTAIR will panic because they are worried they’ll be thought a nutjob? That is a gamble. Sure, you could paint the people who ask the question as crazy, for a while. But sooner or later, somebody is going to ask the question why not release it? What is the harm? At which point if you resist, you’ll piss off a whole new group of people.

Do I care? No. Right now Obama is going to stay President regardless of whether or not he was born here (I think he was) or on Mars. He could peel like a “V” and he would still be President. He could wear a Mao t-shirt and carry a red book. We are not willing or able to handle the race war that would start if he was summarily dismissed. He knows this. It is his grand last hand he can play if things get really crazy.

It is a strange time.

Another thing. If Obama has a Certificate of Hawaiian Birth there is no way he could have been born in a hospital in Hawaii, nor his mom have been seen for post-natal care by a medical professional in Hawaii. They are required to report births and when they do it is documentation enough for there to be no evidentiary issues with the birth certificate.

Obama won’t tell anybody whether he actually signed the letter saying he was born at Kapiolani – on White House letterhead with raised seal and Obama’s signature – or whether his friend Neil Abercrombie forged it to commit charity fraud. If Obama signed it, it was perjury. If Abercrombie forged it, it’s forgery and charity fraud. The Secret Service representative that WND spoke with said it would be a serious crime warranting investigation but that they can’t act until Obama either confirms or denies that he signed it.

But if Obama has a COHB as the DOH has said, then there was a crime committed either way. If Obama signed it, he’s the perjurer. If Obama didn’t sign it, then Abercrombie is the forger. Seems to me that the Secret Service has everything they need already to open an investigation because one or the other crime was committed.

Let’s play Jeopardy! The category is Consensus Issues

A) It’s settled. All of Obama’s information has been peer reviewed.

Q) What is Obama’s entire document portfolio. Oh wait, ……..

A) It’s settled. All the scientific information for climate change has been peer reviewed and approved Al Gore.

Q) What is scientific proof of Man made global warming. Oh wait, ……..

The MSM & some blogs believe that error by omission qualifies for all the news that is fit to print, more importantly, it equals the whole truth as far as ideology agendas are concerned.

Omitting all the facts does not render truth. Ultimately the facts come out and the peoples trust is lost.

The American public has been duped before and will be again by this very organized and sophisticated medium. The people doing the duping also demonstrate a lack the natural simplicity of being honest and using common sense. Itellectual presented arguments by any means is not a substitute for honesty and it doesn’t necessarily equal the responsibility of those being truthful either.

Error by omission is simply error. When the whole truth is not presented, the “what” that is presented is disengenuous at best and is regarded as spin or an untruth. All we want is all the facts and that they be true.

It’s a shame that we have to follow the money now to determine the credibility of people. We used to call it hush money which leads me to belive the following: Not all fact checkers are to be respected to check the facts, just as all peer reviewers are not to be respected who are being paid to look the other way.

Following the money is more critical now. It is not what you know anymore that counts. It’s who is paying who paying you to provide results of misleading information.

Ed wrote the updated part which you quoted, not AP.

thevastlane on December 4, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Well, the best way not to get tagged as a Birther is to refrain from saying that people are “rightfully making it an issue” and that the only reason that she would avoid doing that herself is because “there are enough members of the electorate who still want answers.” It’s the same thing as Truthers saying that all they’re doing is “asking questions.” The answers have already been provided; they just reject them because they’re married to their conspiracies.

That’s why I love ya’, Ed. Right or wrong, I always know your analysis is honest.

maverick muse on December 4, 2009 at 1:02 PM

No harm done. I was just speculating as to motives after a long night without a working heater in very cold Chicago. One point though: Ed and AP are certainly smart enough to realize the danger to their family and friends in a state of anarchy. And personal reputation means a lot when you’re essentially killing another Franz Ferdinand and kicking off something big and bloody. That’s infamy and history books stuff. Tough for anyone to stare down. Well the repairman has come and gone and my house is a balmy 80 degrees. Wishing you all a lovely day. I’m off for a siesta fiesta. Via con Dios amigos…

Jim Treacher on December 4, 2009 at 1:24 PM

I don’t have time to catch up on the comments so maybe someone else has mentioned this, but the logical thing to do would be to require every presidential candidate to have a security clearance. My husband went through the process for a job he had. A president certainly should have to have one.

Rose on December 4, 2009 at 1:24 PM

Do I care?

Seems to me that the Secret Service has everything they need already to open an investigation because one or the other crime was committed.

justincase on December 4, 2009 at 1:12 PM

justincase, you are absolutely on the money with your whole post. After seeing the Secret Service Director, Mark Sullivan bend down and grab his ankles for Congress (re: WH party crashers) I don’t have much hope they’ll investigate Obama for anything. At least not while their boss, Treasurey Secretary, Tim Turbo-Tax Geitner is in charge of the Secret Service.

Holy crap. 18 pages of comments on this?
People need to get a life.
This birther-non-birther crap is crazy.
So anyone who wants proof of Obama’s birth is crazy bcs everything has been made totally clear on that issue?
That issue hasn’t been made clear to anyone.
All the dodgy behavior about everything by the current admin has created an atmosphere of paranoia & rightly so.
I have no idea what BO’s birth certificate says & I haven’t heard or seen any trustworthy proof that clears this issue up.
I’m not clamoring for the info, either.
But it would be nice if the issue were clarified with proof by BO himself.
This is so much like when the Clintons ‘lost’ records pertaining to Hillary’s legal work.

When I first heard this I cringed. However, after reading the transcript and hearing it, I realized two things. First, if this was a mistake, then it really isn’t a big deal. Second, maybe it wasn’t a mistake at all….Perhaps the ‘Cuda wanted to STARKLY show the hypocrisy of the MSM coverage of she and Trig and Obama’s BC and be able to say….it is freaky conspiracy stuff ON BOTH COUNTS. Could this have been a strategy? It seems to me that it could have been or maybe I am just reading too much into it. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Rose on December 4, 2009 at 1:24 PM

That would seem logical, but, the Security Clearance process itself is very intrusive. It will unearth all kinds of dirt on people… which could then be leaked and used for political reasons.

Politicians are constantly given a “pass” on background invesigations for this very reason.

voxpopuli on December 4, 2009 at 1:32 PM

The primary reason the so-called Birthers are still on this subject is…..

……the Mainstream Media WON’T DO THEIR JOBS!!!!!

Who is left out there to plow for truth when you have a LYING MEDIA, LYING ADMINISTRATION and LYING CONGRESS?

So what if he really was born in Hawaii? What about all the other stories out there about his passport, school records, etc.

If the freaking media would spend 1/10th of the time on Obama that they have spent going thru Tiger Woods we’d all already have our answers.

People that doubt his birth might be trying to understand / explain logically how someone would be so committed to “remaking” this country into Northern Venezuela or going around the world campaigning for Global Leadership for HIMSELF.

People are just trying to make sense of this……possible?

Yessir. She’s such a rube and so inconsequential, we’re on page 19 of this thread.

kingsjester on December 4, 2009 at 1:19 PM

Sarah Palin, along with Rush Limbaugh represent a modern day John Birch Society. The Republicans made Palin-Limbaugh the face of the GOP and the Democrats are happy to acquiesce since it means the GOP is completely off the tracks as a party. This allows the Democrats to pretty much do anything they want to do. At this point Obama could be caught on tape Marion Barry-style smoking crack and screaming he wants to “Kill Whitey” and will get reelected with no problem.

Unlike the modern day GOP, William F. Buckley was able to successful drive out “anti-Semites, the isolationists, the John Birchers” or kooks from the Conservative movement almost to make conservatism respectable. Today’s GOP has gone over a cliff and have Palin and Limbaugh adding more coal to go faster into oblivion while Michael “Uncle Tom” Steele apologizes to Rush for slowing down the train due to his own weight.
