Palin: Obama’s birth certificate is fair game; Update: Transcript added; Update: Palin responds

At 7:45, your quote of the day. Something for (almost) everyone here: For the left, smoking-gun proof that she’s a fringe character, and for Birthers, smoking-gun proof that their concerns are mainstream. As for righties like me and Ed (and Glenn Beck) who think this particular science is well settled, tomorrow should be a fun media day.

I wonder if she realized when she said this that it’s going to follow her around.

Update: Some people are commenting that they can’t load the clip, so here’s a transcript.

Would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?

I think the public, rightfully, is still making it an issue. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bother to make it an issue ’cause I think there are enough members of the electorate who still want answers.

Do you think it’s a fair question to be looking at?

I think it’s a fair question, just like I think past associations and past voting record — all of that is fair game. You know, I’ve got to tell you, too: I think our campaign, the McCain/Palin campaign didn’t do a good enough job in that area. We didn’t call out Obama and some of his associates on their records and what their beliefs were and perhaps what their future plans were. And I don’t think that that was fair to voters to not have done our jobs as candidates and as a campaign to bring to light a lot of the things that now we’re seeing made manifest in the administration.

I mean, truly, if your past is fair game and your kids are fair game, certainly Obama’s past should be. I mean, we want to treat men and women equally, right?

Hey, you know, that’s a great point, in that weird conspiracy-theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn’t my real son. And a lot of people say, “Well you need to produce his birth certificate! You need to prove that he’s your kid!” Which we have done. But yeah, so maybe we could reverse that and use the same [unintelligible]-type thinking on them.

Update (Ed Morrissey): Late last night, Palin responded on her Facebook page in a post called “Stupid Conspiracy Theories”:

Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask… which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.

Well, the best way not to get tagged as a Birther is to refrain from saying that people are “rightfully making it an issue” and that the only reason that she would avoid doing that herself is because “there are enough members of the electorate who still want answers.” It’s the same thing as Truthers saying that all they’re doing is “asking questions.” The answers have already been provided; they just reject them because they’re married to their conspiracies.

I think Palin just discovered the First Rule of Blogs: Don’t feed the trolls.

How many records of Obama’s past have you seen? Come on, count them and reveal them.

rlwo2008 on December 5, 2009 at 12:14 PM

The clerk of the senate confirmed his credentials, no more records are even remotely required. You’re chasing that fire melting steel style conspiracy at this point, you know that right?

ernesto on December 5, 2009 at 12:28 PM

The Supervisor of the clerk didn’t see it and didn’t certify it, so it ain’t so.

ernesto on December 5, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Credentials? What credentials? Can you list them?

Where is the guy he went to Pakistan with, and why did he go, and what did he do there? How come that guy has never surfaced?

ornery_independent on December 5, 2009 at 12:39 PM

While we’re at it, what clerk? What is his name?

Palin’s intellectual credentials: buying into ridiculous conspiracy theories.

ernesto on December 5, 2009 at 12:08 PM

Requesting someone’s birth certificate doesn’t qualify as a “conspiracy theory”… let alone a ridiculous one. I’d think that an useful idiot as yourself would know what qualifies as a ridiculous conspiracy theory, you fools practically live off of them.
Me thinks thou dust project to much.

IS THERE ANYONE IN AMERICA WHO REMEMBERS BARACK OBAMA???????

Please speak up…..

You need to read through this. His ‘classmates’ from Columbia don’t seem to recall anyone by the name of Barack Hussein Obama being in that graduating class. They are just as puzzled as we are about who he is. He’s not in the yearbook either.

I have to laugh at ernesto. Some deluded little troll who calls the DMV and Customs ‘birthers’ because they would want to see someone’s birth certificate.

You suspect conspiracy, reaching the highest levels of US government. You’re a conspiracy nut. Admit it, own it, its ok.

Remember, truthers are bad people because they ask questions, yet you’re all just trying to protect america, right?

ernesto on December 5, 2009 at 1:11 PM

When evidence is provided, it can be judged. There is extensive evidence around 911 being caused by islamic terrorists flying planes into buildings. There is evidence Obama was born in Hawaii. There is no evidence Obama graduated from Columbia. There is no evidence Obama has accomplished anything of value to society.

When you back way off, do we know ANYTHING about the first couple? This is not normal for the president.

We always in the past have gotten stories from teachers, the old neighbor, his first girlfriend, college buddies laughing about when they did a panty-raid on the sorority house, a photo of the prez with sideburns and a disco shirt, etc., etc.

Or like how Laura Bush killed a guy…

Still waiting on that original thought, Deb. By the way, the thread is about Sarah Palin and Obama. Not Boooosh.

But they’ve seen his birth certificate. Just not the version you’d like, and so now the man owes you something. Obama owes us nothing more with regards to his credentials. He was sworn in as President, something that cannot happen unless the clerk of the senate approves his documentation. This approval was granted. End of story. Anything more is conspiracy, Alex Jones territory. Might I suggest InfoWars as a new hangout?

I’m surprised PimpleSimian has gone this entire thread without typing WalMart, Nascar, Race Fan or Redneck. I don’t think this boy has ever had a creative thought in his life. I would love to see a Thread asking these Useful Idiots like Pimple, and Ernesto and… cr2d2r6 and Dave, why the f**k they even come here. Not that we would get the truth. I’m just curious about the brain functions of the lower primates. I did discover one useful trick when dealing with the Left. If you go with the exact opposite of what they say and do… you will find yourself much closer to the truth.

Contrary to popular belief, when the topic is something serious or policy related, I can engage in rational discussion. However, when the topic is mindless drivel, don’t expect much.

Well, in the US you can’t get a passport without an original/certified Birth Certificate. Apparently, you have never applied for or do not have a US passport (I guess you don’t get out much yourself). A COLB won’t cut it BTW.

whbates on December 5, 2009 at 3:20 PM

Good point about the passport.

Which leads directly to the next problem:

Under which country’s passport did Obama travel to Pakistan in 1981, when travel there under a U.S. passport was banned?

Can anyone recall or find out whether Obama left the United States between that trip and the trip to Kenya to visit his father’s family and the time he became a presidential possibility?

Obviously Obama had a U.S. passsport to go to Germany to speak as a candidate.

But when was it issued?

Here’s the rub – get ready for it……

The passport files of Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama were illegally accessed during the presidential campaign for an unknown purpose.

The person held responsible never testified because he was found dead of a “suicide” in Chicago earlier this year.

The breach:

Washington Times
Passport breach being investigated

March 21, 2008
By Bill Gertz and Jon Ward – Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today apologized to all three presidential candidates for the improper access into their passport information by State Department personnel, as investigators began probing possible motives and why the breach was not detected earlier.
After being alerted yesterday by a Washington Times reporter to improper retrieval of Sen. Barack Obama’s personal information, State Department officials announced today that a review had found intrusions into the files of Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. John McCain as well.
State Department official met for about 90 minutes with the Senate staffs of each candidate, along with the staff of Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joseph Biden, Delaware Democrat, who has jurisdiction over the foreign service.
“There are still many unanswered questions, including why these passport files were accessed and for what purpose,” said Mr. Obama’s Senate office after the meeting.
“Senator Obama believes a thorough investigation of these privacy breaches is necessary and expects one that is prompt and thorough,” the Obama statement said.
The State Department last night said one of the persons responsible for the inappropriate behavior was employed by an information technology firm headed by one of Mr. Obama’s foreign intelligence advisors.
The State Department this evening had not yet released the names of the persons responsible for the unauthorized searches but said two were employed by Stanley Inc. and the third was an employee of The Analysis Corp. (TAC). Stanley Inc., a 3,500-person firm, is an Arlington-based information technology firm that this week won a $570 million contract to continue providing passport services to the State Department, which the company has done since 1992, according to Stanley Inc.’s Web site.
TAC is a McLean-based information firm that has helped the State Department automate the Terrorist Watchlist over the last several years, the company’s Web site said.
TAC’s Chief Executive Officer John O. Brennan is a former CIA agent who is an adviser to Mr. Obama’s presidential campaign…….

For the rest of the article here’s the old link (not sure if it works – it’s from my personal archive):

The “suicide” – I cannot find the link in my archives. But the guy was found dead just before he testified.

Question – in what year was Obama’s first U.S. passport issued? No one knows. If the birth certificate were altered once he were tabbed as a rising star, it may have been issued more recently than one might think. Hence the COLB dated 1997 that they keep presenting as “proof.”

I am not saying this is true. But something really hinky has been going on with Obama’s passport for awhile. Whether is connects with his birth certificate, or his failure to reclaim his U.S. citizenship at age 18, we don’t know yet. Oops, I’m a beginner at the link function. So I guess all the blue will lead you to the Wash. Times link. Sorry!

cane_loader on December 5, 2009 at 4:06 PM

I should have been clearer. It is a false assumption to assume Obama had to have a U.S. passport any time prior to his nascence as a potential candidate. He could have been on a British passport that entire time, by dint of his dual citizenship. He could have gone to Pakistan and to Kenya under that passport.

So – when it came time to get a U.S. passport, it may have been as late as 1997!! (the date on the COLB shown to factcheck . org) If his original birth certificate was altered/forged at some point to fix this barrier to his political prospects, this is when it may have been done. That may be why Obama refuses to provide any documentation of his birth or passport prior to 1997.

So in a long-winded way, I’m saying that just because he has a U.S. passport now, does not mean that the birth certificate provided by him then matches the original that existed when he was born.

I know, I know, “conspiracy kook,” but nothing adds up in Obama’s case. I’m trying to discuss ways that the weird puzzle pieces may fit.

If the president would just release the birth certifcate and let it be thoroughly inspected, all this would go away. But he won’t. And so, at least in my case, he guaranteed that a certain percentage of Americans will never accept him, because they feel they are being lied to.

That a really stupid political move for a man who got only 52% of the vote.

Unless the truth would hurt him more….
