Obama refused to be photographed with F-22
posted at 2:55 pm on December 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
How petty can the White House get in setting up Barack Obama’s photo ops? According to Foreign Policy, petty enough to refuse to be photographed with America’s most advanced fighter. The Obama administration successfully killed further production of the F-22, and when visiting Elmendorf AFB in Alaska — where F-22s are the pride of the base — the White House insisted that the Air Force move an F-22 out of the hangar in which Obama gave a speech:
When President Obama spoke to troops at Alaska’s Elmendorf Air Force Base last month, the unit there parked a shiny new F-22 fighter plane in the hanger[sic]. But according to multiple sources, White House aides demanded the plane be changed to an older F-15 fighter because they didn’t want Obama speaking in front of the F-22, a controversial program he fought hard to end.
“White House aides actually made them remove the F-22-said they would not allow POTUS to be pictured with the F-22 in any way, shape, or form,” one source close to the unit relayed.
Stephen Lee, a public affairs officer at Elmendorf, confirmed to The Cable that the F-22 was parked in the hanger[sic] and then was replaced by an F-15 at the White House’s behest.
The airmen there took offense to the Obama aides’ demand, sources told The Cable, seeing it as a slight to the folks who are operating the F-22 proudly every day. They also expressed bewilderment that the White House staff would even care so much as to make an issue out of the fact that the F-22 was placed in the hanger [sic] with the president.
This is unbelievably petty and unnecessarily political. After all, one can agree or disagree on the strategic decision to stop building more F-22s without turning the system into some sort of bête noir. The US has 187 F-22s defending the nation, and thousands of men and women flying and maintaining them. The crews that operate the F-22 take justifiable pride in their performance, and it would make sense for them to display their latest and best fighter platform as representative of their efforts.
Instead of acknowledging Elmendorf’s pride, the White House instead turned it into a political football. Will Obama now only be pictured next to military equipment of which he personally approves? No one would have assumed that before this incident because the choice of equipment for such appearances would have seemed too inconsequential for anyone to notice.

Blacklake on December 3, 2009 at 4:12 PM
Bingo! Somebody gets it! Every Raptor thread someone says “the F-35 is cheaper, let’s just buy more of those and get more for our money”.
WRONG.
These two planes were designed to compliment each other, not compete for the same duties.
It’s referred to in aviation circles as the “High Low Mix”, as illustrated by the F-15 Eagle, and F-16 Falcon.
Two different planes that help each other protect our guys, and put a hurtin’ on the enemy, as a TEAM.
It has been budget politics that has twisted this into F-22 vs. F-35.

Got up close at an Army exhibit in the local air show a few years ago. There was a flight demonstration, as well as another one for static display, and they let you sit in the seat and get your photo taken. Really cool!
Brian1972 on December 3, 2009 at 4:27 PM
Yes he would, because he stupidly canceled the program.
If we were still employing Americans building this aircraft for our pilots to win in, there would be no problem at all with the photo. If that were the case, he would not have had to remove it from the hangar in the first place, would he?
Bad policy does not make for good image management.

So next time someone says “We give Israel all this aid,” no, it’s mutually beneficial arrangement: joint training and intelligence and stuff like this. (But Israel should diversify its alliances more anyway.)
Intel has a big presence in Israel. I dont know exactly what parts they make or design but it’s way more than just Macs.
Then there’s all the medical devices made or designed in Israel which I am sure the Arabs use and have to pretend they dont know where they comes from.

I’m going to be charitable and suggest that it was not Obama, himself, who ordered the switch, but one of the ground-pounding “advance team” who decided to do a little of the Boss’s thinking for him, without fully considering the consequences. Being even more charitable, I’ll suggest that Advance Guy thought to himself, “Uh, oh. The Boss fought to kill this plane. A picture of him with it could be used in Bad Ways. I can just see Cheney saying, ‘Obama killed the F-22 program, and he has the audacity to be photographed in front of it?’ Better get these guys in the baggy suits to swap it out. I’m so glad I caught that!”

Brian,
Nate Hale (Spook86) at Formerspook has been writing on this topic for quite some time. I credit him for bringing my thinking around to supporting F-22.
Aside from the two points you made earlier (age of F-15′s and the complimentary nature of the F-35′s mission to that of the F-22), Spook86 makes another point.
Even though F-22 is now vastly superior to anything other countries operate, we run the risk of falling into the Luftwaffe’s trap: having so few “vastly superior” airframes vs overwhelming conventional numbers deployed by our enemies. For example, China may not have glamorous planes, nor do their pilots exhibit anything approaching exemplary skill (Indian pilots, by comparison, have become quite good in the past several years).
BUT.
China’s industrial complex has the capacity to crank out thousands of those crappy fighter planes. Also there are literally millions of young men who could be trained as aviation cannon fodder to fly them at a rudimentary skill level.
In its day, the ME-262 Schwalbe was superior to the P-51.
But there were thousands upon thousands of P-51′s, and a relative handful of ME-262′s.
The same can be said for several other German innovations during WWII, all the way up to the V-2.
In the end, wars in the air are won by numbers.
We are fools, IMHO, to ignore this. And Barry Sotero is perhaps the biggest fool of them all, because the man is nothing more than a political parasite.
BTW, if Dave Rywall wants Barry, he can have him. Meanwhile I’ll take some stupid uninformed idiot Canuck’s opinion of us seriously only when he becomes a US citizen and can vote in our elections.
(canopfor, however, makes me laugh and I enjoy his comments here; I agree with him quite a bit :) )
Wanderlust on December 3, 2009 at 5:38 PM
I agree, and I wonder if I didn’t communicate my point well. I was trying to point out to e-pirate that the tone and presumptions of his unsubstantiated claims of “Obama Derangement” in this topic actually seemed to indicate his own “deranged” motivation.
And as much as I agree with you, I think the larger issue here with the President, as others have pointed out, is his sheer pettiness on this issue. Setting aside the issue of whether or not it was correct to stop F-22 production, Obama — using his own words — “won” that fight, but he seems unwilling to move on.
It seems to me there were three approaches to solve this “dillema”
1) take the picture with the surroundings as-is: most people wouldn’t have given it a second thought; they wouldn’t have really noticed or cared that an obsolete remnant of a canceled project still exists in its natural environment.
2) stage the event elsewhere: Okay, allowing for a bit of neurotic politicizing, one wants to pick the perfect scene for an event. It seems a bit paranoid to be sure, but it’s something that wouldn’t have really caused a stir. It’s a low-impact adjustment to just pick a slightly different backdrop.
3) Actively relocate the offensive object and replace it with something more suitable to your agenda. Is he so insecure with himself or so inexplicably horrified by the mere presence of the F-22 that he can’t even be pictured with one in the background?
He chose option 3, and that, to me, seems very weird!
BlueCollarAstronaut on December 3, 2009 at 5:40 PM

upinak on December 3, 2009 at 5:45 PM
Also unnescessary, because Obama supporters couldn’t tell the difference between an F-15 and an F-22.
Somewhat, but when it comes to aircraft, you can’t really compare the two eras.
WWII was up close air to air combat, primarily with mgs and later mgs/cannons. These days, the roles of fighters are vastly different. Even fighter-bombers are totally different.
I just think the difference between the F-22 and a crap Chinese fighter is far greater than the Me262 and allied fighters of the day. Vast numbers of P40s, Spitfires, etc… could overwhelm a smaller force of 109G4s, Focke-Wolfe 190, Me262, etc… but it would tkae even more J-10s* to overwhelm a smaller force of F-22s (and all the support that comes with them).
*Not really sure what the breakdown of Chinese fighters is, how many Jian-XX, Su-XXs they have, etc… I assume it’s more of the J series.

So was the decision to cancel production after 187 purely to make Obama happy or was it based upon deep analysis of the national interest of the USA? How do warfighters feel knowing that for the first time in nearly 80 years, the USA won’t have an operational front line fighter in production once the F-22 is done?

Air dominance battles don’t let you go back and rearm.
A single F-22 can only carry/deliver so much ordnance at one time. A small group of them can only carry/deliver so much. They planned the original number of F-22s to allow them to deliver enough ordnance to defeat the number of enemy aircraft they were expected to face.
Each airframe taken away from that original number means not only that there are less to defeat the enemy in detail, but also that more are likely to be lost in combat as they do get individually overwhelmed.
James on December 3, 2009 at 7:43 PM
Reason number 9,876,342 that Sarah Palin will make a better Commander-In-Chief than this idiot!
Sarah doesn’t use troops for photo ops.
Not only has she been photographed AND VIDEOED doing weapons training in Kuwait, she was all over the USS Stennis this summer before she went to visit her troops in Kosovo! (where she flew in Blackhawks)
Sarah was photographed in the conning tower going over flight control. She was photographed on the flight deck in full gear, helmet, goggles, overalls, the works.
Sarah has been photographed with troops all over and Navy in their dress uniform aboard ship.
My guess is her only gripe would have been if there was JUST ONE F-22 in the hangar!

He is a sorry piece of S–t. After sending 30000 troops on a short misson that he insured will fail, he would rather, as stated, slap the military again in the face to insure that he still has the adoration of the left liberals who disaprove of any war. Likewise he would not want the muslims, especailly the radical ones, to think he approves of using the militaty that he commands against them. Standing in front of F-22 just is not the right image and photo op for him. He much prefers to screen out his supporters in the military and place them near him so that he can bask in their enthusiastic support and adoration. As well, he would not want to project military power at a time that he is activly engaged in guiding it to failure; as he so clearly pointed out in his reference to Vietnam, a triumph to him and his mentor, Frank Davis, where we lost to communist.
