Is NASA hiding its climate data, too?

posted at 5:45 pm on December 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The University of East Anglia’s CRU had to admit this week to destroying the underlying raw data for its anthropogenic global-warming theories, rendering their conclusions untestable — and scientifically speaking, worthless as a result.  AGW advocates say that this does not undermine their case for man-made climate change theory because other organizations have supporting data as well.  One of those organizations, however, has proven as unresponsive as UEA-CRU to demands for the release of the data (via Yid with Lid):

The fight over global warming science is about to cross the Atlantic with a U.S. researcher poised to sue NASA, demanding release of the same kind of climate data that has landed a leading British center in hot water over charges it skewed its data.

Chris Horner, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, said NASA has refused for two years to provide information under the Freedom of Information Act that would show how the agency has shaped its climate data and would explain why the agency has repeatedly had to correct its data going as far back as the 1930s.

“I assume that what is there is highly damaging,” Mr. Horner said. “These guys are quite clearly bound and determined not to reveal their internal discussions about this.”

The numbers matter. Under pressure in 2007, NASA recalculated its data and found that 1934, not 1998, was the hottest year in its records for the contiguous 48 states. NASA later changed that data again, and now 1998 and 2006 are tied for first, with 1934 slightly cooler.

The changes go to the heart of Horner’s request.  He wants to see the internal discussions at NASA that surrounded the changed conclusions to determine what they identified as the initial errors in their data processing.  NASA has thus far refused to release the communications, as well as the raw data that they used to create their conclusions and build their models.

It goes without saying that this runs counter to open and transparent scientific pursuit.  Companies conducting R&D for proprietary products and services have the right to keep their data and communications privileged.  However, NASA is a government agency that is ultimately accountable to the citizens of the US, and they are doing research on issues that impact public policy — in fact, greatly impact it.  On both counts, NASA should not force scientists and the citizens that fund that research to sue them before making that information transparent.

On the other hand, if they are that determined to keep that information away from public review, then the public can certainly conclude that the agency has something to hide, and something to fear from accountability.  With UEA-CRU conclusions already off the table, thanks to the destruction of their underlying data, the stonewalling from NASA strongly suggests that AGW doesn’t have any objective, testable science on which to stand.  And while that remains the case, the US and the industrialized nations should focus their environmental efforts on restricting actual pollutants rather than worry about a gas that naturally occurs in the atmosphere — and keep from wrecking their economies with ill-advised taxation schemes.

The speed at which this entire global scam is unraveling is breathtaking. Most of these revelations have been out there for a few years now…but the CRU e-mails put a bright spot light on it. I’ve never seen any body of ‘scientific’ work associated with so much fraud in my life. And the NASA AGW crowd, including James Hansen, look every bit as corrupt, if not more so, than the CRU frauds.

You’d be ill-advised to think this beast is dead just yet. There are many, many fingers in that green $$$ redistribution pie who won’t let go without being stomped, hard. AGW tax & trade schemes are the mother lode of parasitical cash for all sorts of vermin, from Saint Gore on down to every individual whose livelihood hangs on AGW being considered a “threat” to humanity.

It’s because CO2 is naturally occurring – without being poisonous or otherwise any immediate threat whatsoever to the public health – that the scammers latched onto it so well. Previous efforst to scam nations resulted in actual pollutants being cleaned up, so the parasites need something that can never be removed, unlike pollutants which actually, demonstrably harm people.

Kill AGW DEAD, DEAD, DEAD!!! Kill it NOW!

I’ve been following this for awhile now… and the thing I can’t wrap my mind around is how NASA feels its OK to “change” data… YEARS later?

Data is data… either they do NOT have a reasonable way to measure temperature accuratly… which is amusing seeing as to how much money is being spend on “global warming”… or they are manipulating the data sets.

Data does NOT change… especialy somthing as easily measured as temperatures.

darwin on December 3, 2009 at 6:19 PM

NASA has put the ‘naughty’ in aeronaughtic. They won’t reveal that data because it is all phony. Someone examining the mathematical operations might question the statistical underpinning for the data they ‘selected’ as ‘reliable’ after it was ‘quality controlled’ until unrecognizable from the raw numbers.

Here’s a clue – the raw numbers are retrievable. Math is magic that way: what can be done can be undone. They know the final numbers and they know the operations that massaged them to the proper outcome. They also know that they would be laughed off the stage if they present their cherrypicked, doctored data as scientific research.

In any other discipline but climatology, those scientists would be laughed out of their field. As it stands, since the climatologists accept this as standard practice, we must assume climatology is like astrology or so much bunk, but definitely not science.

Come to think of it…hasn’t a lot of NASA’s funding dried up over the years? Haven’t they really struggled with $$$?

Maybe they are making ends meet by that same sort of grant money that the rest of the AGW people covet? You know…that 1934 date, well, if you can “trick” it a little, maybe we can funnel a little bit more funding your way?

This is going to be a “follow the money” kind of downfall. Think of how fat and rich Al Gore has become. I’d bet my hound dog NASA has been reaping some really good money on this boondoggle.

B) The Democrat Party and the ‘Left’ embraces this ideology and starts ‘cooking the books’ claiming it is backed up by science for political gain…

C) Billions of taxpayer money is funneled to this ‘science’ and if you weren’t on board due to the truth, you went hungry and a full scaled assault is levied against you…

D) The ‘Left’, using it’s allies in Academia and Hollywood, started to poison the electorate with this ‘junk science’ to influence the masses and pop culture into accepting ‘regulations’ on their freedom due to ‘Man Made Global Warming’…

E) The movement goes global, with the intent to make the American taxpayer prop up third world Dictators to keep their masses in poverty and decrease the standard of living of the United States all under the guise of ‘Man Made Global Warming”…

F) Word leaks out that the whole thing is a complete HOAX, just days before an “International” conference to take the sovereignty of the United States away and give it to the UN…

G) In face of the fraud, Obowma and his Administration give orders to go ‘full steam ahead!’…

H) The possible Fraud and RICO case resulting from the original ‘junk science’ based on a political ideology could spread into every fabric of our society due to the money it has cost taxpayers and the regulations, laws, fines, fees, and legislation that has been passed due to the ‘junk science’…

I) The Democrat party and all of it’s allies are joined at the hip to this faux movement and are mainly responsible for all of the damage…

J) The ‘state run media’ is going to due everything in it’s power to sweep this under the rug for as long as it can, focusing on who hacked the e-mails instead of what the e-mails contained…

K) The American people are either going to finally wake up and expose this fraud for what it is, or it will willingly sign away our sovereignty based on a HOAX…

… did I miss anything?

(Kinda makes you think if the Delta Smelt was the real reason for turning the water off in California and turning a fertile valley into a dust bowl…)

Darn it.. where is Ted when we need a man?

upinak on December 3, 2009 at 6:42 PM

Anyone paying attention to their five senses and engaging a little grey matter would know, without seeing any data, that AGW is a gigantic fraud.

Hey, come on… we had a HIGH of 19 degrees here in Denver today!

The hacker is a hero.

Good summary btw.

I just hope conservatives are qualified to pick up the country and run things better… that jury is still out.

petunia on December 3, 2009 at 6:31 PM
Conservatives are definitely qualified … or did you mean to type “Republicans”?

darwin on December 3, 2009 at 6:35 PM

The label “Conservative” doesn’t necessarily imply competence in my book. Trying to distance ourselves from the lack of sticking to financial responsibility by calling ourselves Conservatives rather than Republicans is merely semantics in my book.

And frankly a distinction without a difference.

petunia on December 3, 2009 at 6:44 PM

There are some amazing, committed people at NASA. On the other hand, there are a few sh!theads with an agenda who give the whole organization a black eye.

We need a housecleaning in DC in 2010 and again in 2012, then some gardening can be done; ie. getting rid of the useless weeds.

hillbillyjim on December 3, 2009 at 6:44 PM

What? The “House that Hansen (AGW’s grandpappy) Built” is slagging off FOIA requests?

Sure, why not!

Ya know, some have said Hansen is backtracking, cause he announced he wants Copenhagen to fail – actually, he wants it to fail, because he thinks the money and powergrabbing politicos won’t go far enough.

This guy should have been fired for preaching on the taxpayer dime long ago.

To bad Binky died.

upinak on December 3, 2009 at 6:41 PM

Binky (1974–1995) was a polar bear who lived at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage, Alaska, and was famous for mauling zoo visitors.

Good Lord! Maybe Al will meet Binky in another life.

Heck… even Bill O’Reily won’t look out for me!

Romeo13 on December 3, 2009 at 6:38 PM

Scoomed. Heh!

chaswv on December 3, 2009 at 6:46 PM

LOL…. just read over on Fox that Babs Boxer wants to have congressional hearings on these “hacker stolen emails”!

Uh… she does realize that this happened in ANOTHER F”N COUNTRY?

Do they have any concept about limits of power?

Romeo13 on December 3, 2009 at 6:12 PM

She wants hearings in order to disarm the giant torpedo heading for their Cap and Trade dingy. The hearings will discredit the memos and thus save the day for AWG in the USA.

19? Hold on what am I at. I would link N.O.A.A. but I have a feeling I would be mobbed.

Yahoo says I am warmish
with a chance of 2 more inches of snow.

petunia on December 3, 2009 at 6:44 PM

Some Conservatives are Republican… but many Republicans are NOT Conservatives. As a Party they did not push a Fiscal Con agenda even when we gave them both houses of Congress, and the Presidency.

The distinction if valid.
