Honduran Parliament to Obama: Pound sand
posted at 11:36 am on December 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
MPs in Honduras have voted overwhelmingly against reinstating President Manuel Zelaya, shrugging off international pressure four months after a coup that has isolated one of the poorest countries in the Americas.
As the vote continued, more than two-thirds of members of Congress had voted not to return the deposed president to power for the remainder of his term, which ends on January 27, as Washington and many Latin American governments had urged.
Honduran media put the ongoing vote at 98-12, well in excess of the simple majority needed in the 128-member, single-chamber Congress for the vote against restoring Mr Zelaya to succeed.
The vote is a slap in the face to the Obama administration, which has insisted that the parliament conducted a coup by removing Zelaya from office. After getting slapped by Congress and its Law Library for misstating the facts of Zelaya’s removal, the State Department reluctantly agreed to recognize the regularly-scheduled Honduran presidential election and let Honduras’ parliament determine Zelaya’s status. The White House publicly expected Honduras to restore Zelaya in some capacity for a short transition period.
However, as statements by MPs on the floor show, Obama and his team miscalculated the depth of the insult felt by Hondurans over the US intervention:
Politician after politician insisted that they were right the first time when they voted to oust Mr Zelaya for ignoring a Supreme Court order to cancel a referendum on changing the constitution. …
“My vote is [a lesson] for anyone who pretends to perpetuate himself in power. My vote is so that my son can look at me and say ‘Dad, you defended democracy,” said Antonio Rivera of Mr Lobo’s conservative National Party.
Now what? The US position had been that Zelaya had to be reinstated, but their shift makes that unclear. Brazil, Venezuela, and Nicaragua won’t recognize the election results. Costa Rica, which tried to reach a negotiated solution that would have put Zelaya back in office but almost powerless, has already announced that they will accept the election results. The US decision will likely signal the rest of the OAS states as to whether a free election should be recognized, or whether the US wants to ignore the will of the people just to score some political points and foist Zelaya onto an unwilling populace.
That’s about as lose-lose as one will see in diplomacy, and it was utterly, utterly avoidable. The best thing that Obama can do is to swallow his medicine and learn to shut up. (via Fausta)

roy_batty to Honduran Parliament: Outstanding!
roy_batty on December 3, 2009 at 11:41 AM
Agreed, but such behavior is not exactly typical of what we have seen from The One.
This whole thing is very funny — as long as Honduras doesn’t actually get invaded, and I fear we have at least two crazy lefties (Chavez and Ortega) who would gladly do so if given any remotely encouraging enabling sign from the Obama administration.
To the Hondurans: hearty congratulations for standing firm against your local bullies.

can we have the Honduran congress? 2/3 of ours sucks.

Obama and his minions know no shame. I recall during the election, he said, “They say I am a socialist“, spitting the word “socialist” like it was a shot of vinegar.
And since he took power, his hard left ideology is revealed by hist actions, belying his bullshit rhetoric.
We need change. And hope.

It’s too bad we have to elect a tyrant for people to start standing up for democracy. Obama’s such a threat to democracy that OTHER legislatures are responding more appropriately than even our own.

You know Obama has about a gazillion paid people in the State Department that could have friggin brought him up to speed on this. Heck they even have a “Latin America” department, an entire department set up for just these countries. I will bet my next paycheck neither him nor his staff thought to even ask them about what would happen, or if they did, he totally blew off their advice.

The Us decisosn is irrelevant. the OAS takes its cues from Chavez and Lula da Silva these days.
You forgot to mention that the Honduran government has complied with the terms of the Tegucigalpa settlement reached last month that the US called a “breakthrough”.
By the way, Zelayas fate was sealed last week by the Honduran Supreme Court as well as the election. Per the terms of the Tegucigalpa agreement, this vote in Congress was preceded on Nov. 25 by a 14-1 ruling by the Honduran Supreme Court on the question of the Constitutionality of restoring Zelaya. They found it would be unconstitutional for Congress to vote to reinstate Zelaya thus sealing his fate with legislators.
P.S. the Brazilians have evacuated the last of their staff from the ex-Brazilian embassy. Now its only Zelaya and his Marxist sycophants left.

I wish there was some way for us plain, everyday Americans to express our solidarity with the Honduran patriots who are defending the will of their people. I’ve contacted my Senators (both of whom are raving liberals) and my Congressman (the only “conservative” from my entire state) asking them to support the Honduran people.
The Senator’s offices gave platitudes “The Senator is considering all points of view, blah blah blah”. The Congressman’s office said (paraphrased) – You’re damn tootin right I’ll be supporting them.
Thank God for one good man
