Too bad to check: Huckabee “laughed out loud” at complaints about clemencies in 2004?
posted at 10:06 pm on December 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
You have to see it to believe it. The source isn’t some backbiter who claims to have overheard a phone conversation or whatever. It’s one of his own lawyers, responding in official correspondence to a prosecutor who’d politely objected to Huck’s M.O. in granting clemencies. Read it and weep, or LOL, as you prefer. Bear in mind that the whole Wayne Dumond fiasco had already happened by the time this exchange occurred. Dumond was released in 1999, committed the rape in Missouri in 2000, was arrested in 2001, and convicted in 2003, just months before the “laughed out loud” letter was sent.
This goes back to the point I made in the post this afternoon. Never mind Clemmons: Is there nothing he regrets about his overall clemency policy? Even the lulz?
Update: That “laughed out loud” letter reads so badly that I’m searching for alternative explanations. Maybe Herzfeld, the prosecutor, had sent another letter to Huckabee at the time and that was the one Huck’s lawyer was responding to? The proximity of the dates makes that unlikely, but still. It can’t be as bad as this. Can it?
Update: The more I think about it, the more skeptical I get. Would Huckabee really laugh out loud, even in front of his lawyers, given all the grief he’d gotten over Dumond? Would his lawyer really be so stupid as to write something like that in official correspondence regarding something as explosive as clemencies? Huck may have been cavalier about commutations, but he wasn’t politically suicidal. I think.
Update: No, it appears there’s no alternative explanation. Arkansas columnists were writing about this even at the time. Most charitable theory: Huck’s lawyer just made the whole thing up.

apacalyps is the reason the left gets to laugh at the right. I believe in God, and I believe in Jesus. I don’t care what Allahpundit believes in or what he doesn’t believe in. apacalyps doesn’t believe in evolution. I don’t care if he/she teaches his/her children about it or not. Chances are those kids would end up working a slaughterhouse type job with bibles in their back pockets as they don’t have a proper education. Believe what you want to believe apacalyps. No one cares. You’re the Taliban version of Christianity anyway. Even Jesus thinks you’re a clown……….

I hate to change the subject, from the theological discussion about just how far into the pits of hell Allah should be thrown.
But is it just me, but I have seen virtually no mention of this on Fox News with the exception of the O’Reilly thing. Granted, I don’t get to watch Fox all the time, but F&F in the morning and some of the evening shows have said nothing.
Protecting one of their own?

I haven’t watched a lot of Fox this past week, so I could be wrong, but it does seem like the only coverage has been the softball interviews with O’Reilly and Hannity.
Allahpundit, while we are talking about clemency and such, can we have a Christmas-time open registration so that we can get some of our old friends back?

Good riddance to the national political aspirations of Mike Huck-a-phony. He just another smarmy, big-government solutions kind of guy.
Big government is the problem, not the solution.

Probably.
The letter from Huck’s attorney reads like something an irritated and overzealous staffer would write, particularly in light of the last sentence.
In all likelihood, Huckabee never saw either letter.
I am not saying this to defend Huckabee: I don’t like the man. He decided that a good way to attract the center was to have one of his peons bash Rush. Nobody that dumb should be our party’s nominee.

He’s vile. He’s a liar. He’s dirty. And, to top it off he does it all while hiding behind his persona as a Southern Baptist Preacher (those are the ones you really have to watch).

From the Associated Baptist Press:
Did Huckabee Rely Too Much On Faith In Making Pardon Decisions?
By Bob Allen
Wednesday, December 02, 2009
The Arkansas Leader, a Little Rock-area newspaper that began writing about Huckabee’s commutations in 2004, said the governor appeared to have a penchant for releasing inmates he happened to meet or who had connections to his family as well as for those vouched for by a fellow minister claiming the prisoner had accepted Christ. As Huckabee’s reputation for granting clemency spread, the number of convicts applying increased.
“We never quarreled with his compassion but with his judgment,” the newspaper opined in a Dec. 1 editorial. “If a convict could get the governor’s ear and convince him that he had found Jesus and turned his life around or he could get a preacher to intercede with the governor, he was apt to go free.”
Virginia Shanahan on December 3, 2009 at 9:25 AM
Left hand: Chuckabee and his hisory for rewriting it.
Right hand: Allahpundit and his history of skepticism.
Please. I’m no athiest, but Huck’s an overbearingly rightous opportunist. I find him an embarrassment to the right.
It’s not Allapundit’s fault that Huck’s a loser.
anniekc on December 3, 2009 at 9:28 AM
There have been many actual cases of jailhouse conversions. However, they still had to face the punishment they earned. Huck was completely within his ordination as a Southern Baptist Pastor to personally forgive prisoners who received salvation. However, there is only One who can redeem lives.
kingsjester on December 3, 2009 at 9:34 AM
I don’t want to have a theological debate, but I am going to say this:
1. The only one on earth that can “forgive,” is the victim. In this case, they were usually dead.
2. The only one that can forgive in Heaven is God.
Notice that neither instance relates to Huckabee in any way, though one of his fundamental problems is he believes it does.
Virginia Shanahan on December 3, 2009 at 9:39 AM
The prosecutor issues a standing objection? That’s ridiculous, too.
This is much ado about nothing, in my opinion. Arkansas has a standing procedure, which the prosecutor understands.
I’d have LOL too.
AnninCA on December 3, 2009 at 9:41 AM
The standing objection comes from the fact that Huckabee was NOT following the laws of Arkansas, but why do I suspect that will not matter to you?
Virginia Shanahan on December 3, 2009 at 9:43 AM
Virginia Shanahan on December 3, 2009 at 9:39 AM
By forgive, I meant to say that Huck could accept the fact of the prisoner’s salvation. But, as the Bible says, the prisoner would have to seek forgiveness from those he wronged and face the consequences for his actions. Salvation is not a “get out of jail free” card.
kingsjester on December 3, 2009 at 9:44 AM
While I would prefer to see almost anybody be President instead of Obama, but in Huckabee’s case, I would be concerned about him having the unlimited Presidential power to pardon anyone for anything.
Uniblogger on December 3, 2009 at 9:44 AM
Sorry but – this is exactly the kind of thing that those of us who actually followed the Huckster’s career have been warning about.
Huck only looks good at a national level because he hasn’t received very much scrutiny. Huck was given a pass by the Lame Stream Media last year totally because he acted as a spoiler to Mitt Romney’s campaign – thereby guaranteeing that RINO champ John McCain would take the nomination. I really wish Republicans would stop being so foolish. You can always determine the right candidate by how loudly the LSM protests against them. Who got the lion’s share of criticism during the primaries? Why … it was Mitt Romney of course. Darlying McCain was given a pass on criticism … hell, he was even praised for his “bi-partisanship” and level headed thinking – until he sealed the nomination – at which time they went nuke on him.
Don’t expect these charges against Huck to get much exposure in the LSM … the LSM needs Huck this time around as a potential “Palin Spoiler”. If Huck manages to knock off Palin in the primaries and win the nomination – then they’ll release hounds on him in the general and rip his ass apart.
This is how the game is played folks – how many times do we have to go down this road? The true conservative is always the most hated one by the LSM.
Learn that – and we start winning again.

I’m so glad Huck crashed and burned in such dramatic fashion. I trust this alleviates any possibility of confusion among voters during the next primary season.
ElectricPhase on December 3, 2009 at 9:52 AM
That’s the thing. Huckabee only pretends conservatism. He puts his judgement over the juries. He seems (I can’t say for sure) think that he has some special way of judging the heart of criminals. It is obvious that Huckabee felt qualified to say a whole lot of people were innocent when juries of their own peers, in real live trials… found them guilty.
Huckabee made himself judge and jury. What is his record if not an example of “judical activism” at the Governer level? That is not conservative! It is not deliberative and wise.
I it is hard not to think his religion colored his view, especially when he consulted the religious authorities before making the judgements he made.
Huckabee showed bad political judgement as well as bad religious judgement.
We have a judical process precisely because one person’s judgement can be so flawed. I think our attempts at justice in this society our pretty good. They should not be over turned in such a arbitrary way. This is the perfect example of how religion can get in the way. It certainly didn’t produce a just outcome in many of the outcomes!
Sometimes if you think justice is wrong you have to leave it for the next life. This system is the best the world has ever seen.
Huckabee is the perfect example of why it is not always wrong to be suspicious of religious motives. Huckabee’s motives are anything but pure.

Well, I have to say, if this WAS Huckabee’s council, he was a ignorant one. My first reading of anything somehow gravitates to spelling, grammar and professionalism. This letter has all the earmarks of being written by a high school dropout. Therefore, as with other such questionable “letters and emails” coming to light in these kind of circumstances, I have to consider it trash!

Very true.
That’s gonna leave a mark on apacalyps.
Umm…how about we don’t give a damn about a GOP candidate’s religion!?
That is why some people, like Mr. Frum, thinks the GOP is an exclusive, not inclusive, political party because there seems to be a a religious litmus test for a GOP Presidential candidate.
And that is why we’ll lose in 2012 because the GOP electorate will be more concerned about a candidate’s faith than his policies and positions.
Romney had THE best shot for the White House but was derailed by Huckabee and McCain. I hope that doesn’t happen again in 2012 IF Romney decides to run again.

That’s a lame theory to describe Huckabee’s letter.
The letter is “old” news but its extremely relevant in light of the fact that four police officers are dead.
With four police officers dead, the letter is even MORE appalling and distasteful than it was when it was first released.

The former Massachusetts governor was also asked about Mike Huckabee’s decision to commute the sentence of a man who now is accused of shooting police officers.

No it wasn’t a case of over prosecution. The man was violent BEFORE he was sentenced to 104 years as a teen.
He wasn’t some innocent kid who is having his first brush with criminal courts. He had clearly committed a number of crimes which justified his 100+ year sentence.
Moreover, if he really was being unfairly punished, he could have appealed his case all the way to the United States Supreme Court on the basis of…oh, I don’t know…the 8th Amendment.

Ed Morrissey was more courteous, helpful, timely, concerned about mass murderer Nidal Malik Hasan (the Fort hood Shooter) in his first 24 hrs, than he was about Mike Huckabee and his first 24 hrs. You be the judge.
Ft Hood First 24: Ed Morrissey on Nidal Malik Hasan.
EM: “Blackbird, I said wait for the evidence, which began rolling out in earnest this week. I also said he COULD HAVE BEEN a “murderous lunatic” with “religious delusions,” and that we should wait to see what else comes out. There is a difference.”
Maurice Clemmons first 24: Ed Morrissey on Mike Huckabee:
1. EM: “It’s the second time that a man granted clemency by Mike Huckabee over the objections of prosecutors.”
COMMENT: False. Prosecutors in the Clemmons case did not lodge objection to Huckabee’s actions.
2. EM: “Six weeks after his release, Dumond raped and killed Carol Sue Shields, and was suspected of killing Sara Andrasek.”
COMMENT: What does this have to do with the Clemmons case? This is a smear on Huckabee. FACT: Democratic Governor Jim Guy Tucker commuted the sentence of Dumond. Huckabee DENIED clemency to Dumond.
3. EM: (Huckabee) laid off considerable blame on prosecutors… and claimed that he had little to do with the Dumond parole.
COMMENT: What does this have to do with Clemmons?
4. EM: Huckabee signed the commutation, and he did so over the objections of the (Clemmons) prosecutors.
COMMENT: See Comment 1.
5. EM: Unfortunately for Huckabee, he has two big political problems now.
COMMENT: Much of what Ed has reported is completely wrong. We are getting more facts now. Ed hasn’t updated you either. Yet, he would like to tell you how this will effect the Governors political future. I bet he would.
6. EM: First, clemency decisions go directly to judgment
COMMENT: Another attack without reporting the facts. A kid was sentenced to a 108 year prison term for his actions as a 16 year old youth. Do you see this in his story?
7. EM: In this case, Huckabee personally freed Clemmons, and did so with full knowledge of the risks.
COMMENT: Ed is either ignorant or a liar. The Arkansas Parole Board freed Clemmons — not Huckabee.
8. EM: That is a very legitimate reason to question Huckabee’s judgment
COMMENT: Ed attacks again without reporting facts.
9. EM: (Huckabee’s) attempt to back away from that decision in his statement doesn’t speak well to his sense of responsibility
COMMENT: Factually wrong. Mike Huckabee: I Take Full Responsibility
10. EM: Update: … why Huckabee’s personal strength of charitable action is the reason he will never be President:
COMMENT: Pathetic.
11. EM: In my opinion, Huckabee would never have signed off on the commutations if he really believed that he was releasing dangerous men.
COMMENT: The facts don’t match the fairytale you’re trying to peddle.
12. EM: The problem is that his judgment on that was flawed
COMMENT: In THIS case, Huckabee was not wrong.
13. EM: That goes directly to executive judgment.
COMMENT: In THIS case, Huckabee was not wrong.
14. EM: Update: Andrew Barr has more about reaction from conservative bloggers, myself included, at Politico.
COMMENT: The Politico story was another hit-piece on Huckabee.
SUMMARY: Ed Morrissey urged us to “wait for the evidence” before jumping to conclusions about Fort Hood Shooter Nidal Malik Hasan. Sadly, he didn’t treat Mike Huckabee with the same respect.
apacalyps on December 4, 2009 at 3:19 AM
