Too bad to check: Huckabee “laughed out loud” at complaints about clemencies in 2004?

posted at 10:06 pm on December 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

You have to see it to believe it. The source isn’t some backbiter who claims to have overheard a phone conversation or whatever. It’s one of his own lawyers, responding in official correspondence to a prosecutor who’d politely objected to Huck’s M.O. in granting clemencies. Read it and weep, or LOL, as you prefer. Bear in mind that the whole Wayne Dumond fiasco had already happened by the time this exchange occurred. Dumond was released in 1999, committed the rape in Missouri in 2000, was arrested in 2001, and convicted in 2003, just months before the “laughed out loud” letter was sent.

This goes back to the point I made in the post this afternoon. Never mind Clemmons: Is there nothing he regrets about his overall clemency policy? Even the lulz?

Update: That “laughed out loud” letter reads so badly that I’m searching for alternative explanations. Maybe Herzfeld, the prosecutor, had sent another letter to Huckabee at the time and that was the one Huck’s lawyer was responding to? The proximity of the dates makes that unlikely, but still. It can’t be as bad as this. Can it?

Update: The more I think about it, the more skeptical I get. Would Huckabee really laugh out loud, even in front of his lawyers, given all the grief he’d gotten over Dumond? Would his lawyer really be so stupid as to write something like that in official correspondence regarding something as explosive as clemencies? Huck may have been cavalier about commutations, but he wasn’t politically suicidal. I think.

Update: No, it appears there’s no alternative explanation. Arkansas columnists were writing about this even at the time. Most charitable theory: Huck’s lawyer just made the whole thing up.

Sometimes Southerners get things right. You will probably never be able to understand that.

There was something about about watching prisoners picking up trash along the interstate highways in the blistering hot sun under armed guard that made me feel just fine. Unfortunately, we have too many Northern libs moving in these days, so we don’t make the rapists and murders do any hard work these days. I guess they’re too busy playing computer games, watching TV and waiting for parole.

Cody1991 on December 2, 2009 at 11:08 PM

Alluh,

You wouldn’t know scrupulously fair if it hit you in the head when it comes to Mike Huckabee and you know. Did it ever occur to any of you that some of those Democrats didn’t like Mike Huckabee? Maybe that particular prosecutor had said snarky things before. I suppose all of you can read and understand what happened because YOU were there!!! Then stop second guessing him.

There was racism in the judges in Arkansas. They gave the blacks who were 50% of the criminals much longer sentences than the white kids who had money for attorney’s. Do you think if you were black and your child was convicted of 108 years for robbery (not armed robbery) on an empty house and stealing some woman’s purse, and having a gun in school without a license should be given 108 years, then you all should experience that with your children. Mike Huckabee had the judge and the parole board ask him to commute the sentence. He did and gave the 17 yr old a sentence of 47 years, and the parole board decided to let him have parole. This sentence was more excessive than any comparable crimes you could come up with. Yes, Arkansas was terrible with these kind of excessive convictions. If it had been your son, you would have been glad that the Gov. cared about how excessive and racist the judges were. There was no way Mike Huckabee could have known he would turn out to be a rapist and killer, and neither could any of you have known that given the information MH had.

Mike Huckabee as Gov. asked 5 officials for their input before any commutation or parole was given.

Mike Huckabee has been explaining this to the public who has the right to hear his side of the story. Unlike people who post articles on Hot Air, who don’t care about giving Mike Huckabee the opportunity to answer their questions. They don’t want to know the truth, they just want to persecute him like the MSM did to Sarah Palin. You know, a fellow Republican. The Democrats can’t believe how fellow Republicans/Conservatives are lashing out at Mike Huckabee and have said there must be other criteria that is being met by this unjust display of hatred and venom. Yes, we know what the real reason is don’t we…you want Sarah Palin to win the Republican nomination and will do anything to destroy her biggest rival. Well, after what I have seen on this site from you bigots and hate-filled people who won’t even listen to what happened, if Mike Huckabee doesn’t run in 2012 or doesn’t win in 2012, I will do everything in my power to go on as many websites as I can and tell people how hate-filled the Palin supporters are and how THEY have influenced my decision to never vote for her in the future. Make that some Palin supporters (assuming I know who everybody here supports – I don’t). I support Sarah Palin and would really like to see her run. Regardless of who I support, though, I can’t just ignore facts and pile on Huckabee like others here have. The guy obviously regrets the decision he made. But there’s a difference between having regret and being at fault. Being at fault would require you to have knowledge that this would happened. Also, he wasn’t even the one who actually let him go.

Cody1991 on December 2, 2009 at 11:21 PM

Good grief. Everything can’t be dismissed as “the race card.” As I said in the other post, racism does still exist, couple that with judicial powers and you have a bad mix. It may have not been about race, but the punishment sure did not fit the crime.

This is the problem with both liberals and conservatives. Liberals believe everything’s racist and conservatives act naive to racism. Sigh.

Part of my job is to write letters to state and federal political leaders and citizens with concerns. I have had to respond to some nasty comments but never in a million years would I think to write something as insulting as what Huckabee’s staffer penned. And even if I had written such a letter, I doubt my boss would have approved sending it on official letterhead.

Ultimately, a leader is responsible for the actions of his or her subordinates. That Huckabee allowed such a letter to be sent doesn’t speak well of his political character.

Slublog on December 3, 2009 at 1:04 AM

So in your mind, Allahpundit is irredeemable and thus worthy of insult? Oh, Matthew 14:31…

Slublog on December 3, 2009 at 12:30 AM
I didn’t say that. God doesn’t want him to go to Hell. I don’t want him to go to Hell. Only the Devil wants him to go to Hell. But, this man is a fool. An atheist is like a fish in the water swimming around telling everybody that there’s no evidence of any water. He is consumed with fulfilling his lusts whether it’s lying, alcohol, porn, pre-marital sex — you name it. All you have to do is check Hot Air any day of the week to see evidence of his personal sin.

Yeah, Huckabee screwed this up so bad that his reponse to Herzfeld will hurt him, while Herzfeld’s letter is not bad enough to harm his political aspirations in any way (if he has any).

Huckabee’s not my guy, so I don’t care if he’s hurt by this. I was just surprised that AP characterized Herzfeld’s letter as a polite objection, which in my opinion it was not.

Matthew 7. It is simply not your place to condemn. These comment threads are not a place to judge motive or heart. It would be best if you simply stuck to issues instead.

Slublog on December 3, 2009 at 12:53 AM

Don’t even go there Slub. Don’t lecture me on smiting the scorner. I am sticking to the issues and Allahpundit has lot’s of them. The Bible talks about people who delight in lies. Psalm chapter 62:

“They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies:”

Allahpundit is a bold-faced liar and Mike Huckabee can testify to that. That’s an issue for sure that is worthy of attention.

I reeaally don’t want Huckster to run for prez in 2012. This incident may very well have wrecked his campaign aspirations. The shocking part is normally it is a liberal who grants leniency to thugs. Huckleberry made a bad decision and people died for it. I do agree that his decision was not as bad as those made by later judicial officials. It was obvious this idiot was a career criminal and had no desire to become a positive contributor to society, yet he kept getting released back into society.

A poor analogy. Jesus didn’t turn over tables of those who were denying God’s existence. He was righteously angry over those who used God and His temple as a means to achieve their own goals. In this case, monetary profit, but the story could be used to rebuke the man you constantly defend.

And with that, I’m off to sleep.

The more I think about it, the more skeptical I get.

There were at least two letters that proceeded the ones that they published. If you were truly skeptical, which you are not, you would have wondered why those letters weren’t published. All they show is a letter from the DA insulting Huckabee.

No, it appears there’s no alternative explanation.

No, there is a very obvious alternative explanation: Contrary to your b.s., the prosecutor did not politely object. When someone insults you, you can either get angry or laugh it off which appears to be what Huckabee did.

Most charitable theory:

You’re blatantly dishonest when it suits you.

bcm4134 on December 2, 2009 at 10:48 PM

There are alot of state govenors who are pretty religious. Like Mitt Romney, for example. I don’t think he’s dangerously stupid.

What Mike Huckabee did and has done is its own special class of stupidity.

No politician, religious or not, would have acted as much as an imbecile as Huckabee. What makes Huckabee stupid is that he used his religion to justify his stupidity.

Instead, he decided to memorialize his heartlessness in black ink for all to see.

Some of us have been blaring this trumpet for months…almost years at this point. I dont know how he made it this far without something like this coming out.

This guy has always emitted a foul odor….even if i couldnt tell what was causing it….it was obvious… the guy stinks.

Good riddance. Maybe we got a shot in 2012 after all.

I *am* a religious individual and Huckebee struck me a weasel from the moment I laid eyes on him. Events the last several months confirmed it.

Don’t confuse being religous with being a blind follower, your brain doesn’t shut off cause you believe in God.

Slublog on December 3, 2009 at 2:17 AM

Slublog, you disappoint me again. Just when it looks like we’ve really turned a corner, you go and say something that puts you back in it. You are so consumed with trying to prove me wrong that you are missing the whole point. It was not a poor analogy. Jesus turned over the tables of the money changers and He called religious leaders ‘hypocrites’ and ‘vipers’ to their faces because God hates sin! Especially the sin of hypocrisy in religious leaders. (By the way, didn’t you say that you are an Elder in the faith?). Seems little ironic. I rebuke Allahpundit and you shake your finger at me accusing me of being a bad Christian. That how the false teachers have it worked out, they kick the brethren and defend scoffers.

BTW: Allahpundit is anti-theist. OK. Everybody calls him an atheist, but God tells me he’s not an atheist or an agnostic (Romans 1:18-20). And I’m sorry for trying to meet you on neutral ground there Allahpundit. You are not an atheist. I don’t know why it is that you’re suppressing the truth of God or what happened in your past to make you not like the God of the Bible, but that does not make Him go away. He is still real, yesterday, tomorrow, and forever. He’s the same God.

Now, Slublog, I notice you like to criticise me. Another option is that maybe you should lightened up a bit and join me to fight the good fight. I don’t claim to be perfect, and never have, but I serve a God who is and love His Bible, which is perfect. Now, here’s the problem. I am very concerned about the people Allahpundit deceives with his lies (1 Timothy 5:20). Allahpundit calls Christianity absurd. Has no problem with blasphemy, or failure to give the name “God” or “Jesus” capitals. He refers to Obama as Jesus our Messiah. Allahpundit and evolution is fundamentally at war with God. Some of my ancestors may have swung by their necks, but they didn’t swing by their tails. If you think you came from a monkey you are a fool (Romans 1:22). He supports aborting babies in the womb (killing kids). He supports gay marriage (he was against Prop 8). And he posts articles on porn and lies about Mike Huckabee on a regular basis (this latest attempt to use the killing of the four police officers as a political weapon against Mike Huckabee is disgusting.)

Scoffers like Allahpundit, they are the ones who are through Hollywood and the news media feeding lies to American people and creating moral decay and destroying the American family with their decadent, filthy, and immoral filth, they peddle day and night to American people. They are the ones who are destroying everything good in the United States. Allahpundit, whether he knows it or not, he is really being a conduit to lead people to hell if you believe the Bible to be true. Think about it. You know when a man becomes a fool, Slublog? When you think your smarter than God. And that’s Allahpundit. That’s him, man. Think about that. He thinks he’s smarter than God.

apacalyps on December 3, 2009 at 6:20 AM

I think that FOX should create a show for people to argue about religion. Have that Allahpundit person and apacalyps be the hosts. Like Hannity and Colmes but with eternal damnation and bloodshed.

IlikedAUH2O on December 3, 2009 at 6:42 AM

No matter what anyone says Huck did not perform thorough research before issuing Clemmons clemency, nor did he research the other 700 plus others. He did NOT ask for input. In fact when he heard the prosecutor say publicly that he was afraid to let Clemmons out, Huck did not investigate at all.

We have learned he ignored communication from the prosecutors.

The responsibility for his action rests solely with him. If he read Clemmons arrest record AT ALL, he should have said, “Um, no way does this thug get out.”

Now he and his few defenders are spinning like tops to cover his lazy, stupid and superficial approach to his job and that now people that he sprung willy nilly out of prison are killing people.
