Quotes of the day

posted at 10:35 pm on December 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

“‘If you are a liberal Democrat who won the nomination with the support of the anti-war left, this had to be one of the most difficult decisions he’ll ever make,’ Gingrich said. ‘And he did what he felt was right for the country.

“‘I think he knew when he did it he was going to split his own party, and I think that took considerable courage on his part,’ he said.”

***
“President Barack Obama’s speech on Tuesday night deserves to be cheered. Over the objections of his vice president and despite opposition from his political base, the president is sending an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan to fight terrorists…

“The Democratic Party’s antiwar faction is upset over the president’s decision. It’s almost as if they didn’t think Mr. Obama meant it when he said of Afghanistan during the presidential campaign that ‘this is a war we have to win’ and a ‘war of necessity.’…

“Fortunately, the antiwar left has little power to stop the president from making good on his commitments. Notwithstanding Mr. Obama’s vote against funding the war in Afghanistan in May 2007, the White House can win a battle over war funding by standing with a coalition of victory-centered Republicans and Democrats who don’t want their president embarrassed.”

***
“‘There will be conditions,’ said Rep. John Murtha, who will manage what’s anticipated to be a $35 billion to $40 billion request for new Pentagon and State Department funding in support of the president’s policy. And the Pennsylvania Democrat believes Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) each has an interest in avoiding outright conflict that would surrender the issue to Republicans.

“‘I know Nancy is very uncomfortable if this were to pass without a majority of Democrats. Very uncomfortable,’ Murtha told POLITICO.”

***
“But by specifying a date to begin troop withdrawals, Obama has placed a sword of Damocles above his own head. When July 2011 comes, the likelihood is that Afghanistan will still be, to one degree or another, an awful mess. Then Obama will need to decide whether to begin the exit or not. If he does, the right will pummel him for cutting and running before the job is complete — and in the process, risking a damaging reversion to chaos. If he does not, the left is likely to explode. Mark my words, in this scenario we might well see Obama challenged in the 2012 Democratic-nomination fight from his left.

“Sound far-fetched? Maybe, but it shouldn’t. With his speech last night, Obama took ownership of the Afghan war — and, though his arguments were more rigorous and cogent than George W. Bush’s would have been, he ended up in a distinctly 43-ish place. (His people are even calling the troop escalation a ‘surge,’ for heaven’s sake.) How long will it take before the members of Obama’s base start muttering: ‘Change, my ass’?”

OK, do you think people growing marijuana in their back yards should be prosecuted? And, no, this probably has nothing to do with immigration/migration.

terryannonline on December 3, 2009 at 12:14 AM

Terry Ann- Do you realize that school district only have a certain amount of money to educate our children? The millions of illegals are not paying taxes. It cost me over $200 dollars for school supplies that go into the “community pot” so that deadbeats who supply nothing can take advantage of the 300 pencils that they claim my three kids will need this year. The jerk who hit my car? The police refused to ask him for id. Why? Because they knew he was illegal, they refused to ask for insurance. Why? Because they knew he didn’t have it. I recently moved to North Dakota. Why? Because illegal immigration is absolutely ruining the state that I have loved all my life. Also, here is another lovely consequence. Did you know that all those kids are not immunized? I pay for my kids. Who pays for theirs?

terryannonline on December 3, 2009 at 12:17 Healthcare bill will do just that. Illegals are overrunning hospitals profits. To offset losses they charge people with insurance more. That in turn makes premiums go up which makes it harder for some to afford insurance. Hence the big debate and bill.

Regular Hot Air readers know that Marcia Morrissey has fought a manful battle for her health -one that has included multiple kidney transplants- so clearly, the flu is a real danger to her. I remember Upstater85, although not his/her views, but doing some research indicated that Sven was banned around the same time. I remember s/he had some excellent posts.

My research on Upstater didn’t turn up the offending post(s) that led to the ban, which once again reminds me of an idea somebody had some months back, which was that HotAir should have a page listing everybody that was baned along with the reason.

I think that was a excellent idea. It’s disturbing when people disappear with little trace and you don’t find out until long after, if at all. Coincidentally, earlier tonight I realized that I haven’t heard from ProgressOverPiece in a while. I did a search and couldn’t find any evidence that he was banned either. Does anybody know? Maybe he’s been hanging out somewhere else, but he’s never been absent this long that I recall.

For that matter, Entelechy stopped posting here months ago. I wish I knew how she was doing. I hope she’s alright and has just developed other interests, but it would be nice if I could do a quick check and find out if she was banned. If so, at least I wouldn’t have to worry about her wellbeing.

homesickamerican on December 3, 2009 at 1:47 AM

I am not going to give him credit beyond political expedience. To lose the war in Afganistan would doom his hopes for a second term, he was simply following polls to see how far the electorate would let him go.

Rode Werk on December 2, 2009 at 10:53 PM

I think this is exactly right. I don’t see how he showed courage here. I think he played it pretty safe.

Had he denied more troops or went for immediate withdrawal, he would have been toast with a large majority of Americans.

This was the safe call: split the difference, throw the hawks a bone by sending more troops, throw the doves a bone by announcing a timetable for withdrawal. All things to all people. How is that “courageous”?

We all know his heart isn’t in it, but to get re-elected he can’t be seen as totally surrendering on national security, so he has to do this. Safe, yes. Cynical, yes. Courageous, no.

And, by the way, why do you think the administration has been badmouthing Karzai for the last couple of months? They are laying the groundwork to make him the scapegoat for when Obama decides to cut and run.

When the going gets tough and we start taking heavy casualties and Code Pink and MoveOn and Kos are all screaming for withdrawal, he’ll point the finger at Karzai, talk about how he’s corrupt, an “unreliable partner”, etc and use that as cover for bailing out.

Karzai is “corrupt” and “unreliable” is simply code for “it’s all his fault” if this surge doesn’t work.

No, it was an unfortunate mention of Michelle Obama on the “no making fun of politician’s families or comparing them to animals or science fiction characters” thread. It freaked me out that something that was just an badly timed jest resulted in the banhammer. I took it as playful teasing of Ed’s new rules, not a put-down of the First Lady. I don’t find anything funny about demeaning anyone’s race, and I don’t remember Upstater even remotely being racist.

Sorry to go so totally back on topic this late (I just got home – Vegas, baby) and I’m just starting to read all the comments – but this one:

The only ones who are senile are those who don’t understand what he is doing. Gingrich is basically saying “Boy I am glad that President Obama finally came around to our way of thinking when he knew he was going to upset the crazies who got him elected”. Its standard trolling. By complimenting Obama he is attacking the left wing of the Democratic party and enraging all democrats who are against the Afghanistan “surge”. Its trolling 101.

I don’t know if Thphilli’s correct that Gingrich is doing this on purpose, but what he’s doing with his statements – it’s making the lefties’ skin just crawl maddeningly, for sure, and it’s making me laugh thinking about it. If it’s deliberate on Gingrich’s part, it’s graduate level trolling, not 101, and I’d love to think that’s true. What makes it seem plausible is that Gingrich must know he’s sadly – not electable anymore, so what’s he got to lose now by just engaging in poetic subterfuge while he sells books?

It might be possible to get him reinstated if you can make the case to Ed in email. I don’t think they monitor but a fraction of the comments here, they just don’t have time, so all the comments asking for Upstater’s and Sven’s reinstatement, (which I noticed in my research), probably went unnoticed.

I sort of remember the thread you described, and I think Ed laid down the law right up front, but you could take the “time served” approach and maybe try to find some redeeming comments from Upstater and/or Sven on race issues from prior threads to bolster your case.

But if one or both are reinstated, somebody would need to know how to contact them to let them know.

You could also include some of the testimonials of other commentators asking for Upstaters return in your email to Ed. I think ProfitsBeard was one. If you do an advanced Google search on “upstater”, and click on the “Date, usage rights, numeric range” link and specify to search the previous year, once you’ve initiated the search you’ll be able to specify in the left column “sorted by date”.

If you include the “85″ in his name you won’t find as much, so leave it out.

The Democrat base will line up behind Obama on this, because they are as unprincipled as anyone else.

Not-so-subtle message…..

A U.S. Army cadet reads a book entitled “Kill Bin Laden” as he waits with other cadets for U.S. President Barack Obama to deliver an address on U.S. policy and the war in Afghanistan at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York December 1, 2009. (REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton)

Sweeeeet. I’m in the military, turns out we are the French military. C’est la vie!

“The Democratic Party’s antiwar faction is upset over the president’s decision. It’s almost as if they didn’t think Mr. Obama meant it when he said of Afghanistan during the presidential campaign that ‘this is a war we have to win’ and a ‘war of necessity.’…

Of course he didn’t.
But backed into a corner,
Now he is forced to…

Good morning, I love this line “Over the objections of his vice president..” Deep in your heart don’t you think he probably does the opposite of whatever Mr. Biden thinks is the right thing to do? Now I have to stop playing and go to work. Stupid lottery.

Cindy Munford on December 3, 2009 at 6:39 AM

Mark my words, in this scenario we might well see Obama challenged in the 2012 Democratic-nomination fight from his left.

by whom?

Hillary? if she leaves this crazy train before it’s too late?

cmsinaz on December 3, 2009 at 6:55 AM

What’s missing in the “QOTD” thread:

“What’s the point in bringing them here, if they (Taliban) know when we’re gonna leave?”

-An AFRICAN AMERICAN TROOP interviewed in Afghanistan. Anybody saw it on Bret Baier’s yesterday? No YouTube clip that I could find.

Aside for a joke, yesterday’s Baier at 1:47 mark with Obama and Tiger Woods in a mag cover. Priceless, I LOL’d yesterday. http://tinyurl.com/ycgejr3

ProudPalinFan on December 3, 2009 at 7:05 AM

The Democrats voted to go into Afghanistan in the first place. In recent years it was always the good war we had to fight…and now all of a sudden they are amazed that Obama would actually give his own commander any part of what he asked for? It is as if the Democrats were just pretending to give a damn about the war in Afghanistan in the first place. And of course they were.

I don’t like timelines on principle, but I also think that there will be enough caveats to this that in the end it might not matter as much as some conservatives fear. At least I hope not.

I heard McChrystal say that even if the Taliban do lay low for a a year or so we could use that time to build up resistance and forge alliances. We shall see.

You just got to try every now and then though, doncha? About three times a year I buy a powerball and dream.

And yes, Joe Biden makes me think of George on that Seinfeld episode, where he said he should make a decision and do the opposite because he was always wrong.

Terrye on December 3, 2009 at 7:19 AM

Newt is being his typical (post ’94) populist, superficial self here.

Hey Newt(ered): With the highly restrictive ROE that the military has to follow, 0bama might as well have just brought them all home, rather than sending more good people to become ‘IED’ fodder.

LegendHasIt on December 3, 2009 at 7:22 AM

Mullen is on Fox news right now saying this drawdown is entirely conditional. Something to shoot for.

I’d vote for you doriangrey. I too would like to run for office and have in my home town, but I will always be considered a “carpetbagger” because we moved from my homestate to Texas and now Nebraska. I will find my way in politics soon….might be more volunteering for a campaign, but I will at least be helping to oust the Liberals and Progressives out of office somewhere.

Courage?
Courage??!!??
For taking a minor political risk with his leftist base by making a half-hearted decision that the traitorous left doesn’t like?
The bar on what is courage has certainly been lowered.

I would say that Obama and his ilk are more courageous for risking their necks in the event that the American people wake up and realize that Obama et. al. are the “enemies within”.

doriangrey on December 3, 2009 at 7:28 AM

Right. But two points:

A million dollars isn’t much to pay for a license to steal and wield power.

Isn’t Boxer’s base kinda too liberal for anyone here?

IlikedAUH2O on December 3, 2009 at 7:57 AM

Surely Obama is aware of the ultimate fate of his role model, Il Duce?
Following in those foot steps is courageous in a twisted sort of way- or outright delusional thinking that such an ending cannot happen here.
