Der Speigel: Where was the Obama magic?
posted at 10:12 am on December 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The German magazine Der Speigel reacted with dismay to Barack Obama’s speech last night — and not because they miss George Bush, as Gabor Steingart’s blast makes clear. In fact, Steingart wonders why Obama decided to marry his impulse to withdraw from war with Bush’s rhetoric to fight. The result, Steingart says, was the worst of both worlds:
One didn’t have to be a cadet on Tuesday to feel a bit of nausea upon hearing Obama’s speech. It was the least truthful address that he has ever held. He spoke of responsibility, but almost every sentence smelled of party tactics. He demanded sacrifice, but he was unable to say what it was for exactly.
An additional 30,000 US soldiers are to march into Afghanistan — and then they will march right back out again. America is going to war — and from there it will continue ahead to peace. It was the speech of a Nobel War Prize laureate.
For each troop movement, Obama had a number to match. US strength in Afghanistan will be tripled relative to the Bush years, a fact that is sure to impress hawks in America. But just 18 months later, just in time for Obama’s re-election campaign, the horror of war is to end and the draw down will begin. The doves of peace will be let free.
The speech continued in that vein. It was as though Obama had taken one of his old campaign speeches and merged it with a text from the library of ex-President George W. Bush. Extremists kill in the name of Islam, he said, before adding that it is one of the “world’s great religions.” He promised that responsibility for the country’s security would soon be transferred to the government of President Hamid Karzai — a government which he said was “corrupt.” The Taliban is dangerous and growing stronger. But “America will have to show our strength in the way that we end wars,” he added.
It was a dizzying combination of surge and withdrawal, of marching to and fro. The fast pace was reminiscent of plays about the French revolution: Troops enter from the right to loud cannon fire and then they exit to the left. And at the end, the dead are left on stage.
It was the speech, in short, of a ditherer and a vacillator. Steingart thinks it goes deeper than that. He accuses Obama of deliberately scheduling the withdrawal for the summer before his re-election year in order to eat his cake and have it, too. Obama gets to have fought a war to build credibility with hawks, and then retreat to build credibility with doves.
The net result is that Obama has weakened himself. For those who see the speech in Steingart’s terms, they will see Obama not as a transformative figure of Hope and Change but as a weak politician who tries to play both sides of the street, heedless of the consequences. In Der Spiegel’s perspective, Obama is extending a war he doesn’t want to win at the cost of human lives mainly for his own political purposes. From the perspective of the hawks, Obama is seen as curtailing an effort that could win — mainly for his own political purposes. In either case, one cannot argue this many contradictions and still talk about Hope and Change or transforming the politics of a nation.
Steingart concludes by arguing that Obama has made opponents more or less irrelevant, since he seems to be opposing himself. “Obama’s magic no longer works,” he says. That may be because Obama finally had to tell people something they didn’t want to hear, especially in Europe.

Good point. It is hard to get West Point cadets to do the Hollywood thing.
d1carter on December 2, 2009 at 11:49 AM
That was the best part of last night’s speech. He kept throwing out lines that he clearly expected would result in applause so he paused and waited for it and he got nothing. Awkward!
highhopes on December 2, 2009 at 11:51 AM
When I heard he was giving this speech at West Point to announce the troop commitment, I knew in my gut it was going to be political all the way. I was also sure his welcome wouldn’t be warm.
His speech was worse than imagined.
God bless the cadets, they froze him out.
donh525 on December 2, 2009 at 11:56 AM
So You Think You Can Dance and Charlie Brown got pre-empted for this crap? At least that what I was thinking.
Seriously, those young people deserved an honest speech about a policy that directly affects them after they graduate. What they got instead was a poltical speech designed to appease the hard left who wanted immediate surrender.

The Grinch Stole Capitalism has been playing all year.

Serves him right. He shouldn’t have made a photo-op out the deal. He would have done far better sitting behind
histhe people’s desk in the Oval Office and simply spoken to TOTUS. I’m not quite sure I’d say the cadets froze him out but they certainly lacking the “Obama love” that he was hoping for.BTW (and I know the left likes to skew the story) but the reaction GWB got when he landed on that aircraft carrier shows what the military looks like when they respect and admire their leader. What we saw last night was the military as respectful toward the office being held by a man they consider a spineless coward.

Obama will be gone long before he graduates.
MarkTheGreat on December 2, 2009 at 12:05 PM
Honestly. Would it be worse?
mwdiver on December 2, 2009 at 12:07 PM
I wonder what we would have saw if they could have expressed their true feelings?
BTW: Rush called the speech incoherent.
donh525 on December 2, 2009 at 12:08 PM
Yes, not long ago. On his way to the Asian Apology tour, maybe? He told them that with that visit, he had finally made a visit to all 50 states. Guess he forgot about the other 7.
mwdiver on December 2, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Hey, Obama only knows one thing, how to give campaign speeches. He’s definitely a one pony show.
docdave on December 2, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Well, you knew there was no way Zero was going to let Linus give the “Peace on Earth, Good will toward Man” speech, this being a Muslim country, and all.
mwdiver on December 2, 2009 at 12:16 PM
For a great contrast, watch Pres. Bush’s final address at West Point- it’s on YouTube. It’s nice to be reminded of what a CIC who clearly, and deeply, loves America, acts like.

A mistake by the handlers of The Man Currently Playing the President of the United States (my preferred name for him):
They had him give a speech to:
An audience composed of people who were not there due to their political affiliation or their political views (i.e., not Republicans or Democrats or potential voters with an agenda). These are future soldiers, there for that reason and that reason only. So, the political “applause lines” simply don’t work.
Welcome, MCPPOTUS (acronym for his other name above), to the real world.
It’s something like showing up with a tub of red meat to feed the lions and finding out that the lions aren’t hungry. At least not for what you’re serving.
IndieDogg on December 2, 2009 at 12:29 PM
Uh, let me be clear: He knows how to read campaign speeches.
n0doz on December 2, 2009 at 12:30 PM
thank you!
that was perfect!
cmsinaz on December 2, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Wouldn’t you love to know the tweaking that ObaMao gave to this speech from the time that December 1 was its announced delivery date and the actual delivery time? How much focus-polling went into crafting that final product?
onlineanalyst on December 2, 2009 at 12:32 PM
Correction noted and accepted. His teleprompter probably also told him when to stop and wait for applause; you know the applause that he didn’t get.

It seems like “the young Lincoln” has forgotten one of his most famous sayings:
“You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”
RocketmanBob on December 2, 2009 at 12:47 PM
The best line of Der Spiegel’s story came right after the title –
Never before has a speech by President Barack Obama felt as false as his Tuesday address announcing America’s new strategy for Afghanistan. It seemed like a campaign speech combined with Bush rhetoric — and left both dreamers and realists feeling distraught.
n0doz on December 2, 2009 at 12:48 PM
Fred Thompson is still interviewing Lawrence Eagleburger – Former Secretary of State, who served five different presidents.
1. Afghanistan is not a country but a group of tribes who do not agree on anything but are at odds with each other.
2. Either get in or get out. But do not repeat the Vietnam experience.
3. In foreign affairs, Obama is radiating weakness across the board.
/Back from break, talking CHINA.
maverick muse on December 2, 2009 at 12:49 PM
Obama’s speech may have “sounded” impressive, given the stuffed vocabulary; but it was all air, nothing there.
Regarding Obama’s administration, in addition to not understanding what they are proposing and doing, everything they are doing shows weakness.
maverick muse on December 2, 2009 at 12:52 PM
I was going to ask,”What was he thinking?”. Well, he doesn’t very well. What made him think going to West Point would have any value? What’s up with these Chicago chumps, anyway? Well, we all know the answer. You have to earn respect and he didn’t get any – just politeness from the “enemy camp”. One poor young cadet couldn’t stand it – I couldn’t, either. Mr. Bobble-head POTUS the Dronus. Starts out by entering waving and grinning like the Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade. Then he turned on the sleep machine. I heard better speeches in Econ 101. He should avoid playing poker, too.
LarryG on December 2, 2009 at 12:56 PM
I stand corrected. Rush must have been quoting this article from Der Speigel, and I posted on another thread, before reading this thread.
Ok..that said….I agree. It was a murky, dishonest speech, and it galled me to no end, listening to him refer to himself as honest. Just ask my hubby. Words were flowing out of me at the tv. My blood was boiling at the end. I’m so sick of this man, and his crap.
capejasmine on December 2, 2009 at 1:00 PM
On NATO and Obama, he wishes IN VAIN for them to match his contributions. But NATO has always been extremely reluctant to get involved in the past, and is not cooperative with the US very often. Now, given Obama’s vapid stance, who can blame anyone outside of the USA for not putting out when America itself is vacillating on what our intentions really are. We’re all stuck with Obama’s weak front as “the direction” that is missing firm convictions against Muslim terrorists requiring international intervention.
So far as Obama is concerned, Western Civilization is all expendable, whereas Islam must not be disturbed.

Obama’s military strategy is no different than the porkulus package. It is be accepted as grandiose plan but it too will end destructively in the long run. Timing the surge to appease the hawks and withdrawing in 18 months to comply passively with the doves in time for an election year. It’s a military morale crusher because he is setting the stage for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory abroad.
The porkulus package is set up the same way. It is was sold as great plan to save the economy but as it peaks in 2010 and then winds down in 2011 it too will leave America with a crippled economy because of government intervention. In addition, notice the timing of the release of the funds to have the maxium effect for those election years.

I really believe Obama is the worst President ever, but I really could care less what the Euro-puds think about him.
The best part of things like this is that you know it bugs the hell out of Obama. I think he values their opinion much more than ours.

Your son and your family will be in the thoughts and prayers of the Strozek household.
Godspeed and thanks to you and yours.
Bruno Strozek on December 2, 2009 at 1:46 PM
So, if I’m the Taliban/Al Qaeda, I roll over and play dead for 18 months, reassuring this squish’s re-election, and then as soon as he pulls out (why, oh why didn’t you Obama Sr.?) I unleash all hell on AfPak. There’s no way Obama would ever go back after leaving.
PatMac on December 2, 2009 at 1:57 PM
Last night Obama did his impression of Captain Jack Sparrow in “At World’s End”. “We must fight, to run away!”
Americannodash on December 2, 2009 at 2:00 PM
Remember, Obowma’s own words: “just words, just speeches”. He means nothing of what he said last night.
To summarize, Obowma wants to add more troops, so they can hurry up to get out on a specific date, and notify the enemy on when to return to take over.
THIS GUY IS THE SMARTEST IN THE ROOM?

Not only “In Der Spiegel’s perspective”. Only the blind don’t see or read this Manchurian.
The weasels of Europe liked his speech, but aren’t sending many more troop/money, just big mouths, as usual.
He must have hit a nerve with them when he said “…and for that we haven’t always been thanked”.
Schadenfreude on December 2, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Yep. It was basically DOTUS* with his TOTUS. Der Spiegel nails it in their criticism. I doubt any media in this country will do it any better.
Obama so clearly didn’t want to do this. Who knew a congenital liar wouldn’t be better able to fake enthusiasm?

I am no fan of Obama, but the Germans have not exactly been helpful in the process…along with the rest of Europe they have sat back and lectured Americans while doing nothing to live up to their own end of the bargain. Ever.
Terrye on December 2, 2009 at 5:27 PM
No, it wouldn’t. Biden is as dumb as a box of hammers — think “jobs” as being a three-letter word — but because of his being a moron, he’s harmless. The Little Black Man-Child is naive but also dangerous in the sense of being evil. He’s a Chicago street thug gone national, intent on causing the U.S. economy to collapse (think Cloward-Piven) in an attempt to usher in the Marxist regime He and his Kool-Aid drinking cult of supporters want.
