Video: Crashers deny crashing White House party
posted at 10:12 am on December 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
As Mary Katharine Ham says, consider this a big signal for a slow news day until Barack Obama’s speech on Afghanistan tonight. The Salahis reportedly dumped Larry King for Matt Lauer, but got a lot tougher interview than they would likely have had from the famously glib CNN host. Give Lauer credit for asking some tough questions (albeit on a lightweight topic), including one at the end about an earlier Congressional Black Caucus dinner that they reportedly attended without an invitation:
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
The LA Times covers some of the ground that Lauer uses for his questioning:
Federal authorities say Tareq and Michaele Salahi were mistakenly admitted by Secret Service agents who failed to verify that they were on the guest list. But authorities acknowledged Monday that in the weeks leading up to the dinner, the Salahis traded e-mails with Michele S. Jones, a top Obama political appointee at the Pentagon, in hopes of scoring an invitation.
One source close to the investigation said the couple produced the e-mails at the security checkpoint last Tuesday to show that they had been invited to the event. The Secret Service, which has interviewed the Salahis as part of its own investigation, has obtained copies of the e-mails.
On Monday night, the White House released a statement in which Jones said she did nothing to help the couple get into the dinner.
“I did not state at any time, or imply that I had tickets for ANY portion of the evening’s events,” according to the statement from Jones, whose title is special assistant to the Secretary of Defense and White House liaison. “I specifically stated that they did not have tickets and in fact that I did not have the authority to authorize attendance, admittance or access to any part of the evening’s activities. Even though I informed them of this, they still decided to come.”
Was this just a misunderstanding, or are the Salahis publicity hounds? The argument that Michaela Salahi’s entire life’s work has been “destroyed” because of the scrutiny and attention — in which they’re now participating — seems overly hyperbolic. Even a misunderstanding on the nature of the communication would understandably need to be investigated if indeed the Salahis got admitted to the White House without specific clearance. As for the Salahis’ work being “destroyed,” having to juggle Matt Lauer and Larry King seems like scant evidence of it. As the old saying goes, they’ll be eating dinner on this for months, and won’t have to crash those, either.
Why exactly did the Salahis push so hard for invitations in the first place? What business were they hoping to conduct at the dinner? I would have liked to hear the answers to those questions, too.

I don’t know why this is so hard – either they had an invitation or they didn’t. I don’t see a lot of middle ground here. What it does show, however, is that Obama’s team doesn’t seem to be up to the task of running his administration in an efficient and effective manner. Screw ups like this get you fired in the real world but for O and Co. it’s business as usual.

I agree with this. The SS scans the the coin used in the toss at the beginning of a football game where the POTUS is attending; yet, they allow uninvited guests near the President? Something doesn’t compute here. Someone had to waive these folks in and my bet is that it wasn’t the SS but some minion working for Obama.

I am tossing the BS flag on this one. They most probably had an email that said come on down and they got let in on that. They didn’t have a formal written invitation, but, someone in the chain of command of the made a conscious decision to let these two people in based on those emails. That decision was not made at the bottom of the food chain.

These two are schemers of the lowest order. And someone IN the White House (or someone else attending who leaned on that someone IN the White House) let these two ‘in’.
My bet’s on NBC…
Since Obama already knew these two, though, it would not surprise me in the slightest if the scheme suited Obama’s ongoing egomaniacal needs. He sure didn’t seem surprised or outraged or even concerned in those photos of him at the State Dinner with these two Crashers. Meaning, whatever “concern” he later “developed” seems entirely manufactured to suit the meme.

I suggest that this pair are emblematic of Washington culture. Cons, hangers on, deadbeats, phonies, people completely detached from the real world. Deceitful and morally dead. A phony kingdom of inflated egos feeding off each others flattery. A place perfectly suited to our current POTUS.
It will take years to clean the tarnish from our once proud capital. Time to get started. 2010 is right around the corner.

Don’t mind any attention to this little orchestrated charade – this administration is up to something much more sinister IMO.
gatorboy on December 1, 2009 at 10:59 AM
Something no one has mentioned: WTF is with this title? I wonder how Gates likes having this Obama Kool-Aid drinker following him around. I haven’t followed this much, but the e-mail exchanges between these clowns and Jones sound as if they’re the basis for the imagined invitation that these clowns claim to have.
Beyond that, why is a liaison between the WH and the Sec of Defense exchanging e-mails with strangers about state dinners? That strikes me as akin to trying to get tickets to a Yankees World Series game by exchanging e-mails with some mid-level employee at the company that supplies hot dogs.
In the end, it’s all bizarre and quite pathetic. Seriously, patrons get more thoroughly scrutinized when waiting for a table at Olive Garden on a busy night than these clowns in getting seated at a WH dinner. Obama staffers are the height of incompetence. That said, the resulting pictures are comedy gold–the two with Biden curled up with the wife are classic.
BuckeyeSam on December 1, 2009 at 11:01 AM
I agree. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to hear that these two did this as a distraction for 0bama and the Democrats.
Torch on December 1, 2009 at 11:02 AM
So they’re attention whores … who cares?
Bottom line – they exposed a security flaw in the White House … a flaw that the White House now has an opportunity to correct.
And no one got hurt. No one was even ever in danger.
It’s better they did it – than a terrorist who may have caused some greivous harm.
I have less of a problem with these two “crashing” a White House party than I do with the President of SEIU holding weekly meetings with Obama in the Oval Office.
Look at the pics from the party … it appears these two were dressed a lot nicer than a lot of Obama’s THUGS who had a proper invite.
So what’s the issue?
Having worked in the White House – I’ll tell ya this … it ain’t Secret Service’s fault. SS would screen every individual invited by performing a background check on them weeks before the event if the White House Staff would let them – but most White House Staffs won’t allow that – to protect the privacy of their guests. Then again – MOST White House Staffs have a “gatekeeper” who is not a part of SS, but works with them, and ensures that only invited guests get in the event. Apparently this White House doesn’t care to have one though – either that or they pawn the job off on a “Lewinsky” type.
Scary to think these people have the nuclear codes.
And Hillary’s ad about the 3am phone call is brought more into vivid technicolor.
God … what have we done here?
HondaV65 on December 1, 2009 at 11:04 AM
If they have one. I still think there was some sort of unofficial understanding that these people should be admitted. NBC owns this administration, after all.
If they don’t, it still remains that they got access to the White House and were around not only the President, Prime Minister of India, but also the Speaker of the House, VP, and a slew of other people who are positionally important in this administration. There should be a scorched earth investigation to determine precisely who let these people through every step of the security measures and anybody involved should be immediately fired.
On one level it is a minor story that a couple of media whores crashed a White House party but if this wasn’t unofficially sanctioned party crashing then there is a security issue to deal with.

volnation and milwife88 have it exactly right. This isn’t hard; it’s not ambiguous; there are no shades of grey. Either they have an invitation or they don’t.
If you’re invited to a WH function, you get a nice pretty invite, with flowery script. It’s a wonderful keepsake after the event.
No sentient adult — let alone a politically-connected one — would show up at the WH for a State dinner without one, even if they had participated in an e-mail exchange along the lines of “Let me see if I can get you into this thing.”
These people are entitled to their own vacuous, narcissistic sense of misdirected purpose. They are not entitled to compromise the President’s security. If they received an invite, say so, show it, and be done with it. The fact that they haven’t is a huge red flag.
If they didn’t receive one, throw the book at ‘em. There’s a reality show we’d like to see: “High Society Convicts.”
We can all be thankful that this event occurred in a frivolous rather than sinister context, as it gives the Secret Service an opportunity to make needed corrections before disaster, rather than after it.
Chuckles3 on December 1, 2009 at 11:10 AM
Interestingly enough, while their backgrounds have been discussed in brief, these two clowns have not received the Joe the Plumber treatment. Why not?
If this were, say, Griff Jenkins and his wife who pulled this stunt, their grades dating back to middle school, their employment records, copies of their tax returns, their church attendance, and everything else about their lives would be splashed all over the media.
BuckeyeSam on December 1, 2009 at 11:12 AM
I was more amused with the drip drip of the whole story coming out where the White House initially made it sound as if they were merely hanging out on the fringes then BAM! pictures of the Salhis with the filthy lying coward himself.
highhopes on December 1, 2009 at 11:14 AM
More importantly, you get the instructions of how to RSVP so they can perform a security check. If that didn’t happen, there is a security problem in the White House.
highhopes on December 1, 2009 at 11:16 AM
Ok here is my question. These people were “announced” as they entered the room.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKy9zmX0lNo
It happens at 40 seconds into the clip. If they were “announced” shouldn’t that indicate that they were actually on some kind of list? How did the announcer know them and what list was he reading from? Clearly he doesn’t know all of the people who attended “by sight”.

Watch this story disappear from the MSM starting today. Looks like Mr. Salahi is a Palestinian activist with a previous acquaintance with Rashid Khalidi, among others. It appears that the Salahis may have indeed had a verbal invitation to attend the dinner but were deliberately left off the guest list released to the media in order to avoid adverse publicity. Either that, or they got in by virtue of their Bravo/NBC connection via Jeff Immelt. Either way, this looks like it was not a “crash” at all, and will quickly be covered up by the Guard Dog Media once word gets out.

Simple really,
Let’s see the couples cell phone records for the night in question. Then lets cross reference the calls made between their refusal at the automobile gate until after they were admitted.
I’m sure one of those calls goes to a White House extension or staffer cell phone. If so, we can find out who waved them in.
It seems pretty simple to me.
