Palin’s book sells a million copies in two weeks

posted at 2:55 pm on December 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

After HarperCollins massively boosted the initial run print, I wondered whether they might conceivably have to boost it again. Ten days later, we have our answer.

In all likelihood, with Christmas coming up, sales aren’t even to the halfway point yet.

The print run for “Going Rogue” has been increased again, to 2.8 million copies. The original printing was 1.5 million, then moved up to 2.5 million.

“Going Rogue” joins a select club of million-selling political memoirs that includes Barack Obama’s “The Audacity of Hope,” Hillary Rodham Clinton’s “Living History” and Bill Clinton’s “My Life.”

BJ’s memoir sold in excess of 2.2 million. How close will Sarahcuda come to that? Well, if the Daily Beast was right about HC aiming for a sell-through rate of 75 percent, presumably this means they think she’s going to glide in at 2.1 million or so. Or does it? If they’ve already got a print run of 2.5 million on hand, why boost production further unless they think it’s necessary to meet demand? Maybe they honestly think she’s going to sell somewhere just south of … 3 million copies.

The media’s handling the news by calling her a phony populist, natch, for having used a private jet instead of the bus on some legs of her bus tour. Conservatives 4 Palin answered that charge yesterday, but needlessly so: Neither righties nor lefties have any big problem reconciling luxury with populism, especially in an age when John Edwards presents himself as an anti-poverty crusader and Glenn Beck makes Forbes’s list of the most highly paid celebrities. If anything, I think her supporters relish the fact that the hometown girl has made good by earning millions for the book and $100K a pop to speak. Getting rich is the American dream, and Palin’s all about the American dream. And let’s face it, if she wasn’t hopping on the HarperCollins jet occasionally, the media would be dumping on her for using a high-end bus instead of going Greyhound. She can’t win, so why try? Why is Audacity of Hope even in that list? Hillary sold 600k fist week, Palin sold 700k first week, Bill sold 900k first week.

Audacity of Hope sold 67k.

Isn’t the last line funny? The story was linked from the front page off HuffPost under the headline I used for the link. I guess he was conservative and didn’t even know it according to the loons at Huffpaint.

They seem to do that a lot. Anytime anybody that has ever associated with anybody even close to the conservative movement says something negative about the right, all of a sudden there is a head line that starts off “Top Conservative…,” or “Conservative Leader…,” Or “Leader of the Tea Party Movement…”

They are so lame. It would be funny if it was not so predictable.

I’m a “Palinista,” I guess, so take that into account, but-

I bought it when it came out, planned to read it over time, but didn’t put it down until I finished it in the wee hours of the morning.

I think it is a very “folksy” type of read, giving her perspective on her life with governing philosophy sprinked in. She talks about her family, faith and work in government. Not a great work of literature, nor is it a content-heavy footnoted policy book. As a memoir of an interesting political figure, it works very well.

That’s my take, at least.

Oh, and lots of the criticism that “she doesn’t address policy” is ably answered in this blog post- incidentally by someone who is not a Palinista.

CONSERVATIVE DEMS 47% 52%

CONSERVATIVE REPUB 81% 87%
MODERATE REPUBLICANS 64% 57%

That sounds fine for the General election. Look at all those Dems and Indies. And look at how far the favorables have gone up since July? The Independents is incredible …

And the Mods will come around if she wins the primaries. What are they going to do, vote for BO over her? While they might not vote for her in the primary, I doubt they’d vote against her in the General.

So PPP’s bottom line makes no sense to me.

People don’t understand that most populists were big-government. Hitler was a populist. Chavez is a populist.

Palin is a Commonsense Conservative whose respect for the Constituition and limited government also gives her overlap with libertarianism. She has many Kirkian beliefs such as the imperfectability of man which is a cornerstone of conservatism.

Post some feedback too when you get a chance. The fact she has more than 1.4 children ensures she won’t get good reviews from the GW crowd but it would be interesting.

Sarah should send Katie Couric a copy and sign it “Up yours biotch.”

Uppy,

I’ll just take out my copy of “Going Rogue” giftwrapped for the bear and give that up as a diversion.

I hope the bears can read.

wonder if houffman is kicking himself for listening to his handlers that suggested he not be seen with Palin after her endorsement? 3,000 votes would have been easy for Palin to rustle up if she came in for a campaign event. McDondald could have won by 40pts and Chritie could have won by 15 pts if they didn’t listen to Mitt’s boys

I’d give the book only about a C+ overall. Maybe I expected too much. Maybe Sarah has another book planned that will go deeper into her political philosophy and policy objectives.

The book is a great primer on Sarah the mother, daughter, and wife and does a fair job on her Alaska political background. There were a couple of good analogies based on running and sports, but overall I thought the book was a bit oversimplified.

I did enjoy the book and marvel at the strength and fortitude that Sarah has demonstrated throughout her life. That woman does more in a day than I do usually do in a week.

The book did make me feel comfortable with Sarah the person but still left some doubt about Sarah the politician and policy maker.

Even USGS doesn’t have the best maps on Alaska… and they have been “documenting” it for over 75 yrs.

upinak on December 1, 2009 at 3:51 PM

That’s cause their senior mapmakers are working on detailed Hawii and Bahamas maps, versions 267 and 240, respectively.
The rookies get stuck with Alaska, Greenland and Siberia.

I haven’t bought a copy. Even though I like her, I really do not care for memoirs in general. Plus, I have a giant backlog of books that I need to get through before I even consider another one. I’m glad it is doing well for her though…I hope she outsells Clinton.

Uhm that Piper Cube on the lake at their house IS their plane.
Todd is a pilot.

Palin is a Commonsense Conservative whose respect for the Constituition and limited government also gives her overlap with libertarianism. She has many Kirkian beliefs such as the imperfectability of man which is a cornerstone of conservatism.

She is the most properly ‘grounded’ national figure at this time.

Sapwolf on December 1, 2009 at 3:59 PM

Palin can be called a “founding father populist”

unseen on December 1, 2009 at 4:10 PM

The media’s handling the news by calling her a phony populist, natch, for having used a private jet instead of the bus on some legs of her bus tour. Conservatives 4 Palin answered that charge yesterday

Apparently, the Palins did the math and came to the conclusion that it was impossible to cover the 500 mile stretch from Fayeteville to Birmingham (AL) in the two hours they had until the next event.

Damn! And I wanted to see that bus do 250 miles per hour.

I’ve read many, many reviews of Going Rogue, but there is something that I’ve not seen written about this book. If you’re going to write a book and expect it to sell while telling your story, would you not write it in a way that would appeal to those who are actually going to buy it for the purpose of reading it? I’ve read many critical reviews of the book, and it seems that 99% of them aren’t really reviewing the book at all. They are simply using the review as a platform to bash Sarah. The book could be a combination of the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, and the Canterbury Tales, and these reviewers would still use it to bash her.

I found the book to be very entertaining while giving the reader an opportunity to understand how “Sarah ticks”. She wrote the book especially for me, an individual who believes that political intellectuals are nothing more than hacks who have discovered an easy way to make a living. Give me one name of these self-avowed intellectuals who have actually accomplished something with their drivel. Have they really accomplished anything by their inane ideological ramblings?

In her book, Sarah gave us her policy positions by sharing her non-political and political experiences. For us unsophisticated unwashed masses, she didn’t need to say, “My policy positions are…..”. We get Sarah Palin. She doesn’t need to be professorial to explain herself. We get it without the need for a lectern.

She wrote the book for me. She didn’t write it for the David Frums, David Brooks, and Charles Krautmammers. She wrote this book for you. She didn’t write it for the Katie Courics, Charlie Gibsons, and Brian Williamses. She wrote it for all of us who use common-sense to get through our lives. She didn’t write if for all those hate-mongering pundits and self-worshiping celebrities.

She wrote this book for me and she did a fine, fine job.

Yet a book that stars with,

“The apartment was small, with slanting floors and irregular heat and a buzzer downstairs that didn’t work, so that visitors had to call ahead from a pay phone at the corner gas station, where a black Doberman the size of a wolf paced through the night in vigilant patrol, its jaws clamped around an empty beer bottle.”

Opening paragraph of “Dreams of my father”
Gives a deep insight into political philosophy and policy objectives?

What are you talking about? That book was loaded with policy. I know how she would govern if she were the President. I am totally happy with that. It sure is a hell of a lot better than O’s policy. O said he would govern(rule) from the far left and he is. Nobody listened.
