Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on December 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Remember when Barack Obama promised to strengthen relationships with our allies? Few have been as close as Canada, especially on the war in Afghanistan. Canadians have fought hard on the front lines in numbers that have only been surpassed by the UK among Coalition forces. So when it comes to war planning and new strategies, it only figures that Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, would be on the short list for personal consultation with President Obama, right?
Prime Minister Stephen Harper will not be among the world leaders briefed personally by U.S. President Barack Obama about his plans for a new strategy in Afghanistan.
Obama will contact a number of leaders, including those of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, China and Russia. But despite Canada’s lengthy military commitment to the troubled region, Vice-President Joe Biden has been given the task of relaying the president’s plans to Harper.
Canada’s military mission to Afghanistan began soon after the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. The current mission in Kandahar, which began at the end of 2006, includes 2,800 troops focused around an infantry battle group.
Let’s go over that list again:
- Britain – Major Coalition partner, next highest troop commitment after the US.
- France – Has several hundred forces in combat areas, slightly over 3,000 troops overall.
- Germany – Refuses to commit to combat roles, although they have suffered attacks in other areas, slightly more troops than Canada.
- Italy – Fewer troops than Canada, mainly outside of combat roles.
- China – No troops in Coalition.
- Russia – No troops in Coalition.
Now why is Obama relegating Harper to Joe Biden while schmoozing coalition partners with less combat commitment — and two nations that aren’t even part of the effort? It’s a ridiculous, shameful, and embarrassing insult to an American combat ally and one of this nation’s closest friends.
Harper says he won’t push for an extension of Canada’s commitment after the 2011 expiration of their expeditionary effort. After this, who could blame him? (via Canadian HA reader Peter L)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Obama must be planning on invading Canada… Or maybe he’s just mad because Honduras told him to phuck off…

Exit question….The president is giving his speech to the nation on his new Afghan stratergy from West Point. How many of you think that this is a repeat of the “photo op” from South Korea?
Exit question #2….Is it just me or does anyone else think that he should give his address to the nation on the “new and improved” stratergy from the White House or in front of congress instead of using West Point Cadets as a backdrop?
Just saying!
milwife88 on December 1, 2009 at 8:13 AM
Bottom line, the filthy lying coward should be briefing any nation with a significant contribution to this NATO mission. To use a term popular with the Coward-in-Chief, Canada has “skin in the game” and doesn’t deserve to be treated as a second-class partner.

Forget Canada’s relatively recent lefty politics; this nation has a history of not merely being right in the wars it fights, but of being there first.

publiuspen on December 1, 2009 at 8:16 AM
Most definitely. Not only does West Point give him the appropriate backdrop to fake that he’s a Commander in Chief who can actually command, but he is with an audience where no one will dare jump up and say “You lie!”
Wethal on December 1, 2009 at 8:17 AM
Bingo. Our men and women have been doing a standup job in Kandahar, maybe Obama plans to turn that area back over to the Taliban. But what a slap in the face, not just to Harper but to all the Canadians who’ve lost their lives in this and all those who put their lives on the line day in and day out.
ProfessorMiao on December 1, 2009 at 8:19 AM
I’m of two minds about the venue for this photo-op (all the details of the new strategy have already been leaked with the exception of the timeline to surrender).
There are those at West Point that will soon graduate and be responsible for engaging this strategy so in that sense I think it isn’t a bad place to announce the strategy.
That being said, doing this photo-op smacks of suggesting that the military is solidly behind this radical socialist who loathes the military so much that he was out there defending the Ft. Hood shooter. The whole thing is pointless beyond giving the rat bastard traitor more prime-time exposure and this constant need to disrupt programming for “The Obama Hour” is getting old. I used to think Chuckie Schumer was the biggest media whore in DC but the filthy lying coward puts Chuckie to shame.
highhopes on December 1, 2009 at 8:19 AM
Gee, if I wanted to destroy America by weakening her, I would do exactly what Obama’s doing. Following the laws of chance. I ask myself, is it possible that mere incompetence manages to always cause that goal of destruction to be accomplished, and I always find a voice inside me saying – “it’s no accident, the mistakes he’s making are not mistakes at all.” But, then, what would I know, never having had the experience of voting present in my life….

I can understand putting China on the top of the list, cause they pretty much hold about 2 gazillion in our debt and they want first crack at telling him to pack it in and leave to quit spending all that money.

I agree with you on that. This just makes me so mad. Those men and women have to show respect because he is CIC. However I hope that his reception from the crowd is tepid at best. I have never in my 39 years on this earth seen a president use the military in such a fashion. It is IMHO disrepectful and a new low for ObowMao.

We also have a history of taking on tough jobs in wars, despite the disproportionately high losses incurred. This really is obscene. I hope that the next time Obama or his government want to talk to someone in ours, some suitably low minion is sent to do the job. I can’t tell you how furious this makes me.
ProfessorMiao on December 1, 2009 at 8:23 AM
That’s sort of like getting Rice-a-Roni as a consolation prize.
IMO, it is inappropriate for Biden to be relaying military matters since he isn’t in the military chain-of-command at all. If the filthy lying coward can’t be bothered with Canada at all, Secretary Gates to his opposite would have been a more appropriate conduit than sending Biden- a guy who thinks Newfoundland was a land reclaimation project.

Smart Power! strikes again. Alienate our allies. Bow to our enemies.
kingsjester on December 1, 2009 at 8:24 AM
I have come to the conclusion that Obama practices international diplomacy on a literal socialist model. Our allies (the “rich”) are taxed with insults so as to spread the “wealth” of our nation’s prestige to our enemies (the “poor”) such as Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, etc. The end result of this will very likely be what happens with economic socialism: lots of poor, the rich will flee, and the ones in the middle will be left asking WTF?

deidre on December 1, 2009 at 8:25 AM
Oh, absolutely. Every other President would give an address like this from behind the desk of the Oval Office. Aside from staging photo ops with his kids, what has Giggles used the Oval Office for anyway?
Everything… and I mean everything is a photo op for Giggles. From addresses (you know, a joint session makes a great photo op) to dates with Michelle, to jet-setting to Copenhagen, it’s all about appearances. We have a style over substance Presidency at a time when we can least afford one.
BTW, anyone else notice that you can now no longer watch Football without his smug mug getting into the proceedings? I’m talking about the “Play 60″ commercial which showed Drew Brees tossing Giggles a pass in romantic, dramatic, slow motion. It’s now official… Obama has inserted himself into every facet of our lives.

When he told the troops in S Korea that they “make a great photo op” I was shocked. My husband spent 1 year there away from our family and I have to say; to say something like that shows that this guy has no clue about the military or the “sacrafices” we all make. Those men and women are away from their families on a “remote tour” close to the holidays and it was disgusting. Joke or not, it was in poor taste and using the military like that is disrespectful.
I agree with you that it makes it look like the military supports him by using them in this manner. The vast majority of military members that I personally know do not support his agenda but, they have a job to do. Their first commitment is to the safety and security of all Americans. I also agree that Chuck U Schumer is a tool and needs to be voted out of office. Along with all of the rest of them.

Two thoughts, both related to Obama’s political philosophy and the Afghan conflict.
A. While Canada is further down the socialism/liberalism road than the U.S., Harper and other leaders seem to be making a U-turn to head in the “wrong” direction, from Obama’s perspective.
B. Connect the dots- while there is significant independence, Canada still has some historical and governmental relationship with the British monarch. It’s become pretty clear what Obama thinks of all things “English” over the past year, hasn’t it?
cs89 on December 1, 2009 at 8:57 AM
No you’re not. There are people I know who are there right now and there are plenty who have lost their lives.
Instead of giving Canada its due in doing their job amazingly well over there, you and the little man are giving the middle finger.
RUSSIA and CHINA are being briefed and they don’t even have troops in Afghanistan. Well, not ones in the Coalition…..
It’s a major diss of an ally, but I suppose since we’re not important enough in your eyes (or Obama’s), you might as well piss all over the military efforts of the Canadians anyway.

hillbillyjim on December 1, 2009 at 9:49 AM
You’re partly right and partly wrong. Harper has said that it will discontinue its combat role in Afghanistan, not that it will withdraw completely from the NATO effort. This has been in part a result of the failure of most other NATO participants to pony up in combat roles, or even to participate in supporting those who are in combat roles in a realistic manner, for example, refusing to provide helicopter support after 4pm in the afternoon (Germany).
I can’t know, but I would guess that had Obama been more committed to Afghanistan in actions and not merely words, earlier, and had he been successful in getting more support from the European NATO participants, Harper may have made a different decision.

Take your goddamn “a-list” and jam it straight up your ass.

Obama’s just mad at Canada because they are leaving before we get a chance to bail.

He knows they won’t be allowed to boo him when his “commitment” falls short of what the military needs to succeed. The WH will spin that lack of booing and polite applause as military approval of his terribly flawed plan. He is nothing if not brilliant in his political posturing. I would love to see the cadets set free to express their TRUE feelings. After all, Obama doesn’t give a rat’s posterior for protocol! Why should they?
