Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on December 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Remember when Barack Obama promised to strengthen relationships with our allies? Few have been as close as Canada, especially on the war in Afghanistan. Canadians have fought hard on the front lines in numbers that have only been surpassed by the UK among Coalition forces. So when it comes to war planning and new strategies, it only figures that Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, would be on the short list for personal consultation with President Obama, right?
Prime Minister Stephen Harper will not be among the world leaders briefed personally by U.S. President Barack Obama about his plans for a new strategy in Afghanistan.
Obama will contact a number of leaders, including those of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, China and Russia. But despite Canada’s lengthy military commitment to the troubled region, Vice-President Joe Biden has been given the task of relaying the president’s plans to Harper.
Canada’s military mission to Afghanistan began soon after the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. The current mission in Kandahar, which began at the end of 2006, includes 2,800 troops focused around an infantry battle group.
Let’s go over that list again:
- Britain – Major Coalition partner, next highest troop commitment after the US.
- France – Has several hundred forces in combat areas, slightly over 3,000 troops overall.
- Germany – Refuses to commit to combat roles, although they have suffered attacks in other areas, slightly more troops than Canada.
- Italy – Fewer troops than Canada, mainly outside of combat roles.
- China – No troops in Coalition.
- Russia – No troops in Coalition.
Now why is Obama relegating Harper to Joe Biden while schmoozing coalition partners with less combat commitment — and two nations that aren’t even part of the effort? It’s a ridiculous, shameful, and embarrassing insult to an American combat ally and one of this nation’s closest friends.
Harper says he won’t push for an extension of Canada’s commitment after the 2011 expiration of their expeditionary effort. After this, who could blame him? (via Canadian HA reader Peter L)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The cadets expressing their true feelings tonight would be a beautiful thing. However, I’m sure they will be ordered not to allow that to happen out of deference to the office.

Exactly!

Can’t, not allowed loaded weapons on base… Fort Hood?

Beat me to it.
Russia and China are totalitarian regimes, Obamao loves that.

In order to not reveal ourselves, we avoid comments that use the words “flavour”, “neighbour”, “colour” and the letter zed.

Keep the double-double on the down low too….hey.

Ed is wrong to put this under the Obamateurism of the Day.
This is not amateurish faux pas, but a calculated move. After the multiple insults to our other allies, can Canadians not get their share too far behind?
On top of my head, I couldn’t come up with any incident to our Aussie friends down under. But I am sure this WH will (or have already) come up with something.

It’s generally called treason but under this administration it is called “hope and change.”

double-plus true.

Never has there been a bigger gap between an administration’s competence and its self regard.
Here are the fatalities suffered by the major contributors to the mission in Afghanistan in absolute terms and per million population:
Canada 132/3.91
UK 235/3.85
USA 857/2.7
France 36/0.55
Germany 40/0.49
Denmark and Estonia have suffered the highest causalities per capita. Denmark, with 5 million people, has suffered 30 deaths and Estonia, with a population of 1.3 million, has suffered 6 deaths.

The answer is so obvious, and several of the commenters nailed it already. Proves that Obama is not “nuanced” or “inclusive” at all. “Change we can believe in”, balloney. Only fools fell for that, from all sides.
…and neighbor to the North. A kindergarten runs this nation, with the headmaster being Obama, an underdeveloped narcissistic naive teenager.
Schadenfreude on December 1, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Indeed. Also, Harper is intelligent. Obama is just ‘cool’.
Schadenfreude on December 1, 2009 at 12:47 PM
Let me take a stab at that
Because O’Biden stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and Pinnochio doesn’t want him around for the speech tonight in case old Joe says it isn’t so?
dhunter on December 1, 2009 at 12:55 PM
Yeah… Joe Cool.

Barry probably thinks Canada is part of the US.

To my relatives in Canada that thought Obama was the greatest thing since chopped liver, what do you think now??
Hate to say I told you so.
Bow to your enemies and diss your friends,Marist in the WH.

Just another manifestation of the Democrat Disease. Treat your allies with contempt, and your enemies with sycophancy.

Yes! Your a genius! Canada is one of the 57 states and 957,734.3 congressional districts.
Have they reported to the website how many jobs saved or created yet?

Let’s not forget Australia.

Once upon a time, this country would hang those who were guilty of treason.
Aaahhh, those were the good old days.

Russia and China are also supporters of his favorite Isalmic dictatorship, Iran, who is a close partner of his favorite totalitarian socialist dictator, Chavez. Both of those counties openly oppose our being in Afghanista; which is supportive of the desired outcome Obama is seeking. Britian and France are deep into socialism. Interestingly most of those coming are not actually fighting the muslims.
Canda should be included, but is not part of his solution for some reason. Perhaps they are not playing along with his chicago politics or in some way cause Obama an embarassment or put him in a difficult possition.
Aside from the politics with Canada, Russia and China are close trade partners with Iran. Russia needs Iran to survive and China need Iran and Afganistan for the currently illegal but lucarative trade profits. Iran holds the key for Obama to unlock his desired acceptance by the Islamic world. Additionally Iran has a close relationship with the totalitarian regime of Chavez which Obama has a close relationship with. Canada has nothing to offer in that benifits Obama’s goals.
Obama has set the goal of pulling out of Afghanistan in three years and handing the white flag over to the Afghanistan government. Nothing is said about if they are ready or not.
That gets him out of fighting any Islamic regime by the end of his first term and out of the expense of fighting wars as his socialist programs, that were set up (he hopes) in his first term, become effective in his second term.
These little relationships might come in handy if he decides to follow the lead of his friends and set up the pretense of reelections for life after his second term. Those that might remember; Clinton wanted a third term but his lawyers could not find away around the constitutional limit of two terms. Obama is not know to be too concerned about the constitution, rather he circumvents the constitution and Congress to consolidate his power. With consideration to his involment in the Honduran situation and his interest and eventual support for the Iranian election, there is reason to be concerned. Perhaps Canada would be a problem for him in the future or is not lining up with him now.
We live in interesting times.
