McChrystal statement: Obama’s given me the resources I need

posted at 8:41 pm on December 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

For what it’s worth.

“The Afghanistan-Pakistan review led by the President has provided me with a clear military mission and the resources to accomplish our task. The clarity, commitment and resolve outlined in the President’s address are critical steps toward bringing security to Afghanistan and eliminating terrorist safe havens that threaten regional and global security.

“The NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) objective is equally clear: We will work toward improved security for Afghanistan and the transfer of responsibility to Afghan security forces as rapidly as conditions allow. In the meantime, our Afghan partners need the support of Coalition forces while we grow and develop the capacity of the Afghan army and police. That will be the main focus of our campaign in the months ahead.

“The 42 other nations of the Coalition will benefit from a strengthened U.S. commitment, as success in Afghanistan must be an international, integrated civil-military effort – from our security and training capacity to the governance and economic development assistance that sustains long-term stability. The concerted commitment of the international community will prevail in bringing real change to Afghanistan — a secure and stable environment that allows for effective governance, improved economic opportunity and the freedom of every Afghan to choose how they live.

“We face many challenges in Afghanistan, but our efforts are sustained by one unassailable reality: neither the Afghan people nor the international community want Afghanistan to remain a sanctuary for terror and violence. The coalition is encouraged by President Obama’s commitment and we remain resolute to empowering the Afghan people to reject the insurgency and build their own future.”

The final magic number settled on by The One: 30,000 troops, roughly halfway between what McChrystal claimed was needed for a medium-risk and high-risk mission going forward. Here’s the transcript of Obama’s speech. I recommend the beginning, where, true to form, he reminds his audience that he’s only trying to clean up Bush’s Iraq-induced mess, and the part where he notes that he wasn’t really dithering because McChrystal never asked for new troops to be deployed this year. Which, of course, conveniently ignores the fact that the general told him we only had 12 months to win the war … three months ago.

This part is cute too, coming as it does from the master of the trillion-dollar deficit:

As President, I refuse to set goals that go beyond our responsibility, our means, our or interests. And I must weigh all of the challenges that our nation faces. I do not have the luxury of committing to just one. Indeed, I am mindful of the words of President Eisenhower, who – in discussing our national security – said, “Each proposal must be weighed in the light of a broader consideration: the need to maintain balance in and among national programs.”

Over the past several years, we have lost that balance, and failed to appreciate the connection between our national security and our economy. In the wake of an economic crisis, too many of our friends and neighbors are out of work and struggle to pay the bills, and too many Americans are worried about the future facing our children. Meanwhile, competition within the global economy has grown more fierce. So we simply cannot afford to ignore the price of these wars.

We can afford to ignore the price of everything else, but not the $30 billion or so a year — less than one-fifth of the deficit incurred just in the month of October — that it’ll cost to staff Afghanistan with new troops. Exit quotation from Niall Ferguson, writing this week in Newsweek: “This is how empires decline. It begins with a debt explosion. It ends with an inexorable reduction in the resources available for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Which is why voters are right to worry about America’s debt crisis.”

Update: Oh, and as predicted, the moral argument for Afghanistan was almost completely absent from the speech.

Absoulutely nothing. I’m sure that Gates told him that the President would like him to issue “a little something” in support of the decision it only took the coward four freakin’ months to muddle out.

I still think the most telling thing was just how badly the bastard did in giving his speech tonight. It neither gave confidence or demonstrated resolve. This could well be a tipping point in this corrupt and rudderless administration.

I noticed his rationalization of the war vis a vis Vietnam. Who was he talking to? It wasn’t me. It was, it seems, the far left base. I came away from this speech thinking it was directed at and for the left. I wish I was more optimistic about the man, but there it is. McChrystal is sticking his own neck out, not that that matters on the meta-scale, by saying he can get it done with the resources that are allegedly going to be allocated to him.

Spirit of 1776 on December 1, 2009 at 8:49 PM

Who was he talking to? It wasn’t me. It was, it seems, the far left base. I came away from this speech thinking it was directed at and for the left

I thought much the same thing.

1) Mention Vietnam because your base believes its Vietnam and you need to perform damage control.

2) Mention deficits because it ties into Healthcare. He’s a budget hawk across the board, Healthcare is going to save us money, remember?

3) Mention Bush because its all Bush’s fault, as he said during the campaign.

4) Mention the economy because your base is going to ask why deal with the war at all when the economy is so poor and we can just pull out tomorrow.

5) Call for “unity” and “post-partisanship” because your base will believe that you’re searching for unity by deploying more troops.

The whole speech was garbage. If examined line by line it would easily be torn to shreds.

Spirit of 1776 on December 1, 2009 at 8:55 PM

Sounds like nearly everyone agrees that the speech was very weak in terms of making sense to people.

Oh well, I’m still glad McCrystal gets what he needs. Given the lack of enthusiasm by most all of us for more war and even more debt right now, that may be as good as it’s going to get.

Allahpundit on December 1, 2009 at 8:46 PM

Rough and straight-forward, but the Democrats went with Obama because he has a non-threatening personality that wouldn’t turn off voters, and is only willing to challenge conservative Republicans and only then when he has the entire Democratic Party covering his keister.

He won’t even attack the Blue Dogs in his own party in the health case battle, out of fear he’ll lose them on other issues, and he’s certainly fearful of any major confrontation with his key special interest groups on the left. Combined that with Obama showing no desire whatsoever to go after any of the nation’s foreign enemies in more than a cursory manner — like only approving 30,000 troops — in order to have at least some cover for not being blamed for a resurgence of terrorism because he abandoned Bush’s policies, and you at the very least have the grounds to call him a ‘wimp’, if you don’t want to go all the way to ‘gutless’.

Which goes to show just how ignorant you liberals are. When a Commanding General asks for 40,000 troops four months ago with the warning that we only have 12 months to get the strategy to work……. 30,000 troops months later with no real change in strategy and the promise to withdraw completely in 18 months is not a win for the troops on the ground.

But it is just troops getting killed. You liberals don’t care about them as evidenced by the happy dance you people do whenever a milestone is reached. Code Pink was even harassing troops kids invited to the White House for a Halloween party. Put another way, leave the military analysis to somebody who gives s**t about the soldiers and not the politics. God how I hate people like you when you show such hatred. I’d tell you to go to hell but you already live in CA. Hell would be an improvement.

After TOTUS’s blah blah,
here is the taliban strategy for the next 2 years :
1.
Get out of Afghanistan into Pakistan before snow closes the mountain-passes ( by January 2010)
2.
Stay in Pakistan during the surge in Afganistan, summer to fall 2010
3.
Violence goes down and Karzai looks in control in summer-fall of 2010
4.
Taliban start returning to Afghanistan mixed with the displaced Afghan refugees, from Pakistan and lay dormant
5.
US+Allies forces leave Afghanistan by start of 2011, Taliban is well rested, rearmed and have nothing to fear. And Karzai is scared out of his mind, as he is on his own.
6.
Good for taliban
Good for Obama in 2012

Reding comments from a variety of sources, it does sound like the choice of having an audience for this speech was a huge mistake.

I think that a KKK Grand Kleagle at a CBC dinner would have been received more warmly.

You stupid conservative jackasses got America into this mess and now you want to blame Obama if anything goes wrong.

Norman Blizter on December 1, 2009 at 9:13 PM

silly me, I thought AlQaida got us into it, but leave it to a liberal to blame other Americans.

You Libsters know your perspective is being marginalized and exposed for the simplistic pap that it has always been. All the leftards are sounding the same…whiny and overly defensive.
Schweeet. You guys are a hoot!

Itchee Dryback on December 1, 2009 at 9:24 PM

I don’t know about the rest of the world but I think the Right is going to get a lot of mileage out of that SNL skit.

Cindy Munford on December 1, 2009 at 9:14 PM

Because it is just such a perfect way of nicely describing what the filthy lying coward is doing to the nation. I’m sure it wasn’t SNL’s intent but they’ve scored here.

I’m thinking that McCrystal, after meeting with Obowma the first time back in the day, knew that the only way to keep our troops alive, was to out think him…

OK, it took 80 days to get approval for only 30K troops, but the support of ammunition, food, helicopter gunships, aircraft, replacement parts, support personnel, logistical help, communications, and extra intelligence that will be needed can be sent to the troops currently in the field immediately.

By the time the extra troops show up, I think the support and supplies will have been used properly…

Idiot. the terrorists that ATTACKED our country on 9/11 got us into this Mess. The PC war fighting that we have been doing for 8 years (7 under Bush and 1 under Obama) has made it worse. And for the record bush was no conservative he just played on on TV. And I am amazed that you liberals could take a cluseterfark and make it worse.

I wonder if we will see picture of afgans trying to catch the last helicopter out of Kabal?

One of the most insane, demoralizing, crappiest, anti-American, anti-military speeches I’ve heard from a president, EVER.

I feel for our military and Generals McChrystal and Petraeus.

cubachi on December 1, 2009 at 9:14 PM

It was as if, in the opening scene of Patton George C. Scott stepped out in front of that giant American flag and said, do whatever you want- I’ve got better things to do.

Really, the whole of Congress did not vote on this? Do we not have 43 other nations signed up in support of this, as BO mentioned this evening? Finally jackass, I remember 19 Arabs flying those planes into the Towers, killing American and foreigners alike. There were only innocent people in that building, ideology means nothing when the building is falling down around you. You are a pathetic individual who, if the hardcore Islamists were to take over, would be targeted first for your views. Do you have your head in Monkei`s ass as well, I think so.

This is beyond an apology. He needs to look at every single member of our military, alive and dead, apologize on his knees, and then go straight to he%l!

When the camera turned to Gen. Petraeus I was hoping the spirit of Patton overtake him, and we’d see him walk up the stairs and slap Barry around for being such a sniveling little coward.
