Huckabee: It’s disgusting that bloggers are criticizing me instead of grieving for those cops; Update: Huck rips prosecutor

posted at 4:55 pm on December 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

He’s only thinking of the fallen officers, you see.

“It really does show how sick our society has become that people are more concerned about a campaign three years from now than those grieving families in Washington,” Huckabee said during an interview on Joe Scarborough’s radio show. “It is disgusting, but people use anything as a political weapon.”…

“If he were a white kid from an upper middle class family he would have gotten a lawyer and some counseling,” Huckabee said. “But because he was a young black kid he got 108 years.”…

“It’s a lot easier to be a pundit or a commentator or a blogger than to govern the state and have to make tough decisions,” he said. “People are talking about this from a political standpoint, but what they need to be asking is how did the system break down?”

Kudos to Huck, I guess, for stopping short of calling his critics racist too. In fairness, the clemency in Clemmons’s case wasn’t indefensible at the time. He was a kid, he’d already served 10 years, he had a judge on his side, and at the end of the day, the reduced sentence imposed by Huckabee was still a stiff 47 years. It was the parole board who sprung him, not Huck. Toss in the point about disparate justice based on class and race and the fact that the prosecutor who’s objecting so much now mysteriously had nothing to say at the time and there’s at least an argument to be made that a reduced sentence was in order. It’s his dumb luck that out of the hundreds and hundreds of pardons and commutations he granted that gave him his rep for being soft on crime, the cop-killer in the bunch turns out to be someone who made a semi-compelling appeal. But it is what it is. Like Geraghty says:

It takes a particular bravado for a man in Huckabee’s circumstances to contend that his critics are the ones who should hang their heads in shame; some people might find letting violent criminals go free early out of a misguided sense that they’ve changed their ways a clearer reflection of a sick society.

Indeed. Just like it takes a particular bravado to blame “the system” now when the head of that system felt obliged to peremptorily overrule its lawful judgments again and again and again.

For your viewing pleasure, here’s Anderson Cooper grilling the judge who recommended clemency for Clemmons to Huckabee. Things get interesting about halfway in. Exit question: Now that we know Huck’s not running in 2012 — and he surely isn’t, or else he wouldn’t be wagging his finger at people about this — does Pawlenty’s critique seem a tad gratuitous?

Update: Hot off the presses at Human Events, Huckabee lays out the facts of Clemmons’s clemency, accepts responsibility for his part in it, then unloads on the prosecutor:

During the legally required 30 day public comment period before action on the case was complete, there were no objections registered by my office by any authorities, despite claims of the local prosecutor that he “was afraid something like this would happen.” Interestingly, if he was so afraid, then he has failed to explain why in 2004 when Clemmons was back in prison for a parole violation, his office failed to pursue charges and in fact dropped them, allowing Clemmons to go free, move to Washington, and for reasons beyond me, continue to avoid extradition back to Arkansas or be kept by Washington authorities as he displayed signs of psychotic behavior. I am responsible for the commutation in 2000. I would not have commuted his sentence in 2004 after the re-arrest or in any of the years following. I can explain my decision in 2000. I cannot explain the decision of the very vocal prosecutor in Little Rock who seems to avoid answering the questions as to why he didn’t keep Clemmons in prison in 2004 or get him brought back to Arkansas for his repeated parole violations.

No religious considerations to it either, he claims:

Religion had nothing to do with the commutation. It’s been erroneously expressed that my own personal faith or the claims of faith of the inmate factored into my decision. That is simply not true and nothing in the record even suggests it. The reasons were straightforward — a unanimous recommendation from the board, support from a trial judge and no objections from officials in a case that involved a 16 year old sentenced to a term that was exponentially longer than similar cases and certainly longer than had he been white, upper middle class, and represented by effective counsel who would have clearly objected to the sentencing. (His race, economic status, or education level are not excuses for his behavior because many people of color who are uneducated and living in abject poverty are civil, trustworthy, and honest to a fault and many well-educated, wealthy, white people are dirtbags — think Bernie Madoff).

Update: Alex Castellanos, a former Romney man and now a senior media guy at the RNC, says it’s all over for Huck.

Hard to feel sorry for the guy who gleefully knocked Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin. I wonder how understanding he’d be if either of them were the Governor involved.

I am a little annoyed at the gracless way most of these politicians answer questions. It seems perfectly obvious when people are talking about others within your own party that you could answer the question without insulting the other person. Common guys, haven’t you ever been asked, “do these pants make me look fat?” So these little snarky shots that are taken manage to alienate some part of your future constituency. If you aren’t smart enough to do that, you aren’t smart enough to be president.

Obama isn’t the only one who is vain. Huckabee is proud of what a fine Christian he thinks he is because of 1000+ commutations that show how wonderfully “merciful” he was.

Pride is sometimes considered the worst of the seven deadly sins, as it blinded one to all one’s other faults, as well as to the sin of pride.

Wethal on December 1, 2009 at 5:40 PM

Yeah, and I remember Clinton pardoning a 747-load of low-lifes including Mark Rich, last day as Prez. And the press pretty much mentioned it, glossed it over, was forgotten quickly. So if Mark Rich murders a couple of folks tonight, does Clinton get way-laid? Hope so, but it won’t happen.

Huckabee should fall on a sword, go away, drop from public sight. But this trail of tears is really an underground river if all the governors of the past 25 years files, folders and records are all brought to the light of day. The governor of Tennessee about 35-40 years ago went to prison for selling commutations. Forgot his name, thankfully. But Huck’s the man of the hour, so screech on.

The results of an equation are derived from it’s components. Huckabee cannot be removed from Clemmons=four dead police officers.

When he was 13 years old, Anthony Circosta shot another kid in the arm with a BB gun, which was not a nice thing to do.

And even though Circosta’s shot did not break the kid’s skin, Circosta was convicted of assault.

Which did not matter much as Circosta worked his way through college, joined the Army National Guard, went to Iraq and led a platoon of soldiers in the Sunni Triangle.

In 2005, while still in Iraq, Circosta petitioned then-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for a pardon so that Circosta could become a police officer when he returned home. And the state Board of Pardons recommended that Circosta receive that pardon.

But Romney refused. Twice.

So obviously Romney hates our troops.

Race and bigotry does exist. You can’t just dismiss it as “the race card” just because his statement involves race. His sentence wasn’t justifiable by any means. Of course, had he stayed there, it would’ve been better. But if that’s your idea of justice, then everybody that commits robberies should be sentenced to that amount of time. I doubt anybody would say yes to that if it were their family member.

Cant stand Huckabee. OReilly and Hannitty gave the most cremepuff interviews I have ever seen – Meanwhile the Tally: 4 dead cops and one dead suspect. Way to go Huck.

I knew OReilly and Hannity would give cremepuff interviews to a fellow Fox Employee – but that was rediculous. It was like Hannity slobbering all over Newt and it took the 4th interview after Newt endorsing a Margaret Sanger Award Winner in NY 23 before Hannity could even question Newt on it – sickening.

If we really wanted to get a conservative in office then we CANNOT COUNT ON HANNITY to question the RINOs – he wont do it. So without FoxNews or Hannity’s radion show to point out who the RINO’s are we nominate another RINO-like McCain and lose again.
So Fox News giving a forum for Huck on ALL of its shows for Huckabee to shade the truth – it really is a sore spot for FoxNews.

Frustrating.

Meanwhile the REAL conservatives dont have the advantage of a gushing Foxnews like Huck and Newt get.

Not a Huck supporter for president, he is still a good man and the other potential candidates and their people should keep their mouth shut until he throws his hat in the ring. It is unbecoming and does nothing.

This is a horrible situation and his pardon in this case wasn’t egregious at the time.

Chubbs65 on December 1, 2009 at 6:01 PM

I have been thinking of this in terms of a Root Cause Analysis. Although this effort is best done as a team, I have concluded that without the commutation of his sentence, the perp might still be in jail and four police officers would still be alive. So, the root cause is Huckabee’s commutation. Take special note that Clemmons was not pardoned. Unless there is something peculiar about Arkansas, parole is not automatic, just ask Charles Manson.

However, there are enough contributing causes to prevent Hucakbee from carrying this on his shoulders alone. I am no fan of Huckabee, but he is not solely responsible for this.

Johan Klaus on December 1, 2009 at 6:12 PM

Rush Limbaugh is getting married again on the 4th of July. I wonder if Mike Huckabee will be invited.

technopeasant on December 1, 2009 at 6:10 PM

Oy, when will Rush ever learn?

At least it might still be a buyers market when he has to buy her off with a house in the divorce.

My favorite Huck moment of class:

“Say, don’t Mormons believe Jesus and the Devil are brothers?”

Kensington on December 1, 2009 at 6:06 PM

Heard today that the Mormon author of the Twilight series, Stephanie Meyers, injected a great deal of her religion into the series.

If that is true I call on all Mormons to stop this abominable train-wreck if you have the power. If there is not universal Mormon condemnation of Meyer’s destruction of all things literary, it is on your hands.

I always wondered how many ambulances you caught.

MadisonConservative on December 1, 2009 at 6:07 PM

I’ve never chased one. I’ve noticed your fiance is still chasing garbage trucks. Better train her better or keep her inside.

You mean the Messiah ( O ) and the devil don’t you which makes it 100% correct.

Palin doesn’t have a bid for the presidency, and Huckabee DID give up his bid for the presidency, so… what?

DaveS on December 1, 2009 at 6:04 PM

Palin’s as much in the running as Huckabee until she says she’s not interested. Taking on a Fox talk show immediately after the election would have been more anti-Palin grist; it seemed not to bother Huckabee supporters.

If the blogger wishes to critique other people’s motives he’s open to having his own motives critiqued, no matter if you have some strange obession with what I post. Indeedy.

Blake on December 1, 2009 at 6:11 PM

I had obession once. They told me to watch my diet.

Readymade on December 1, 2009 at 6:16 PM

For me, it’s like the Palin situation. Love her or hate her, the reality is that what she’s been through has ruined her as a viable candidate, imo.

Love him or hate him, the fact is that this situation ruins Huck as a candidate. It will affect enough people’s opinions of him that he can’t win.

Midas on December 1, 2009 at 5:32 PM

Love it or hate it, that means any viable GOP candidate is going to get shot up so badly that they’ll never be viable. Love it or hate it, that means Dem administrations as far as the eye can see.

ddrintn on December 1, 2009 at 6:18 PM

Can’t you make your argument–which has some merit–without being a troll about it?

DaveS on December 1, 2009 at 6:10 PM

I was not responding to an argument but an insult. Since, you have chosen to ignore that fact and attack me instead, piss off. And that is a merit argument.

Blake on December 1, 2009 at 6:18 PM

I don’t like Huck. I never liked Huck. I met him, shook his hand and looked him in the eye and I still don’t like him. He and his single-issue supporters are the reason we have Obama and not Romney in the White House. Love him or hate him, Romney would have been a helluva lot better than Barack-O. Huck is soft on crime, soft on the border and a very bitter man for someone so supposedly Christian.

cannonball on December 1, 2009 at 6:18 PM

I’m sure Huckabee had an ulterior motive for letting this vermin loose. Why can’t the media track down who represented these 1,033 vermin who were let loose? Probably a small set of lawyers…

The question is, what did Huckabee get out of it. What was the payoff? Campaign contributions?

You think it is ok to sentence a 16 year old kid to life in prison for armed robbery?

DaveS on December 1, 2009 at 6:08 PM

Armed robbery? Well, yeah. It’s that whole “armed” part of it that seals the deal for me.

Kensington on December 1, 2009 at 6:10 PM

Police shot and killed Maurice Clemmons, the felon suspected of executing four Lakewood, Wash., police officers in an ambush, after an intense, two-day manhunt.

Looks like he received a stronger sentence than he bargained for; at least this one will not be commuted.

Johan Klaus on December 1, 2009 at 6:20 PM

Kensington on December 1, 2009 at 6:10 PM

He was armed with his finger. He said give me your purse or I will shoot but the victim knew it was only his finger in his pocket. However, under Arkansas law, if you say you have a weapon even though the victim knows you don’t have a weapon, it’s treated as aggravated robbery.

Blake on December 1, 2009 at 6:21 PM

Really? How long have you practiced law? Or, are you just talking out of your azz as usual? Sorry, psycho, I’m just not interested in getting into a flame war with an unstable person, today.

Blake on December 1, 2009 at 6:05 PM

Usually, except in the case of trolls, we attack each other’s arguments not their personal characteristics. Try that first. You might have more success.

Flip-flop Mitt Romney is just as lame as Huckabee. Anyone would be better than Obama, but Palin is the only one around that can save this sinking ship. Let’s roll.

mike_NC9 on December 1, 2009 at 6:24 PM

First, Huckabee DID accept a modicum of responsibility which is WAY more than any leftist would ever do.
Second, this is the 4th murderer that I can prove that Huckabee gave clemency to, 3 murders were committed by Huckabee pardonees or clemencies in Taney County Missouri in the past 7 years and that is ONE county!
Here is the latest murderer in that Missouri county;
