Video: Bold visionary (re)emerges to lead GOP
posted at 7:28 pm on November 30, 2009 by Allahpundit
A palate-cleansing treat for Romero fans, in which a loooong-running Internet meme finally become video reality. Consider this a companion to today’s WaPo poll of Republicans showing just 49 percent think the party’s headed in the right direction. (Just four years ago, the number stood at 76 percent.) On the question of who best represents the party’s core values, Palin leads but her support is soft — just 18 percent, five points ahead of, er, John McCain. The most revealing number:

On social issues, you’ve got fully one-third of the GOP claiming moderation or outright liberalism. On fiscal issues? Just 18 percent, with a clear majority now calling themselves “very” fiscally conservative. The One’s statism on steroids is reorienting the conservative movement. I wonder if he realizes it yet.
Exit admission: I really want to see the full segment of the Hannity interview shown here.
Zombie Reagan Raised From Grave To Lead GOP

Yes, but the other 2/3rds are conservative to very conservative. How come the 18% moderate-to-liberal on fiscal matters rates a “just” but the 1/3rd social conservatives rates a “fully”?

Sorry I check this entry out.
Tasteless, crass and juvenile. Another Trifecta for AP.
The only redeeming aspect is the throwaway comment about Republicans thinking the party is moving in the right direction. Its hard to know which way it is headed with all the different voices claiming we have to embrace new views, hold core values, focus on Economics, focus on Social Values, Invade Pluto( just checking) and all other manner of things to grow.

AP, the fiscal conservative meme wont work. It’s because, everyone, including Obama calls themselves a “fiscal conservative”. That was the main demarcation ploy with Schwarzenegger, that he’s fiscally conservative but socially moderate/liberal. And look where that’s got California. The GOP needs to tap into something deeper that upholds the very concept of fiscal conservatism. Define it. Show where it leads. Why it’s good to go to where it leads. Enumerate the risks involved along with the rewards. If all we have is a GOP field that is limited to “I‘m, the true fiscal conservative.” then we’re no better than any of the so-called Blue Dogs and we‘ll have our hats handed to us.
Weight of Glory on November 30, 2009 at 7:52 PM

It’s black humor, Joey.
Rather bitter, definitely with a bite to it, and not for everyone. Old joke, actually – surprised The Onion went there. There’s been a Zombie Reagan on sweasels’ site for years, and she’s been talking about doing an upgrade.
All that aside, it also highlights that teh GOP is still at a complete loss for how to proceed, something We The People need to correct rather quickly.

The whole thing is sick and so is AP for starting this thread.
duff65 on November 30, 2009 at 8:03 PM
Agree with AP said. Here is the comparison: 33% when the rest combines to 66% is “fully” or all of 1/3 (33 + 66 = 99 33/99=1/3, fully). 18%, on the other hand, is less than 1/5. That means, that if one were to throw a dart into a group of republicans, that one is nearly twice as likely to hit a moderate to liberal R with regard to social issues as one is to hit a fiscal moderate or liberal. (11 to 6, using the percentages)
As AP points out, looking at the other side is even more compelling, less than 1/3 of respondents claim to be very socially conservative, whereas more than 1/2 claim to be very fiscally conservative. As he explains, this pretty much explodes the supposition that the R-party’s main rallying point is social conservatism.

If McCain is in second place I’m pretty damn sure their understanding of what being conservative is and the vocal hotair membership’s understanding of what being conservative is are worlds apart. This is why I hate these stupid “are you conservative/liberal” polls. Ask about specific freaking issues, otherwise you get people like Charles Johnson and Andy Sullivan ticking the conservative box.

Think Alinsky, Mike.
No visible leader = nobody to target.
Remember how well the Gingrich Revolution (erm, sorry, Contract With America) went until Chairman Newt let Bill Clinton make it all about him?
Once there’s a leader, every sin of the leader can be tied to the followers, and at this point enough leftards can parrot Alinsky to see the point.

upinak on November 30, 2009 at 8:15 PM
That’s my point. Slogan thumping “fiscal conservatism” has become such white noise that even Obama can claim it. It means nothing, because our guys don’t even know what fiscal conservatism is. It’s been reduced to nothing more than tax cuts (don’t get me wrong that’s a big part). But even the idea of “tax cuts” has been so bastardized that a tax cut now means $8,000 for first time home buyers, or stimulus checks that have no actual link to the reduction of one’s tax burden. Fiscal conservatism has a philosophical base that believes that every man and woman has the right to their property and the amassing of personal wealth. And as such, all functions of Government should be managed as fiscally responsible as possible so as to not allow for the gratuitous grabbing of the American people’s wealth by their government. Since, that level of fiscal responsibility is impossible to achieve at the Federal level, the responsibilities should be few and very limited, leaving most of the governance, and the funding for it, to be done at the State level. I think AP is right in his suggestions over the last few months to go towards “fiscal” concerns, but that approach needs to be part of a bigger backdrop of liberty and freedom. The GOP needs to remind the people what a real existential threat government is, and yes even their own. Fiscal conservatism places the wealth of this nation in the hands of its citizens. Liberalism places the wealth in the hands of the government, to be redistributed to its citizens. One model requires freedom, and the other enslavement. The GOP needs to make this about…slavery. Yup, that’s right.

How many of those moderate Republicans, let alone the rest of the population would be more conservative if they realized that their more conservative views on fiscal issues will only have a chance with conservative judges who also would probably overturn Roe v Wade (ref. Kelo)?. Also, that overturning Roe v Wade does not make abortion illegal, it merely turns it over to the States with some restricting it more, and others restricting it less.
Not that any GOP elite would think to articulate that.

suzyk on November 30, 2009 at 8:30 PM
I often wonder what these polls really capture. Do they define what range you need to be in to be Socially Conservative(SC)? I would bet that many who see themselves in one group or the other would not agree with each other about where they belong. Are you SC if you oppose Same sex marriage but approve Civil Unions? Or do you have to disapprove of both but can support equal Employment rights? Or do you have to want a return of Sodomy law enforcement to make the cut?
Republicans should be the party of limited government. This would capture the Fiscal and political aspects and leave the social ones for local governance. It just requires working to unwind a century of D.C Growth. And almost as much SCOTUS meddling.
OBQuiet on November 30, 2009 at 8:32 PM

Il Padrino on November 30, 2009 at 8:39 PM
Flawed premise. You can’t presume to throw out 66% of the party who are conservative, without throwing out (speculatively) nearly the same amount who are also fiscal conservatives. Good luck winning a ticket with only those 15% who agree with you fiscally, but don’t socially. That dog won’t hunt.

Sure, we laugh harder at the pokes at the president. (The teleprompter piece was side-splitting!) But give the Onion credit — they produce authentic satire, with a straight face, that is funny. For us to get huffy (or fact check this stuff) because it’s aimed at the right is really useless. Take a joke, or don’t, and move on.
brambo_42 on November 30, 2009 at 8:49 PM
You also need to factor in the “passion factor.” I’d give pretty good odds, that no matter how fiscally conservative a candidate is, that if they are not socially conservative, i.e. support gay marriage, most of the 66% conservative vote is gone.
mwdiver on November 30, 2009 at 8:55 PM
I get AP’s point that fiscal conservativism is the dominant force. I don’t think that means that social conservatism is irrelevant. In fact, social conservatism may be a great way to reach out to those voters who aren’t particular about fiscal conservatism (i.e. Obama voters who overturned gay marriage in California). We’ll see how the public reacts when the Supreme Court overturns DOMA next year.
