Video: Bold visionary (re)emerges to lead GOP
posted at 7:28 pm on November 30, 2009 by Allahpundit
A palate-cleansing treat for Romero fans, in which a loooong-running Internet meme finally become video reality. Consider this a companion to today’s WaPo poll of Republicans showing just 49 percent think the party’s headed in the right direction. (Just four years ago, the number stood at 76 percent.) On the question of who best represents the party’s core values, Palin leads but her support is soft — just 18 percent, five points ahead of, er, John McCain. The most revealing number:

On social issues, you’ve got fully one-third of the GOP claiming moderation or outright liberalism. On fiscal issues? Just 18 percent, with a clear majority now calling themselves “very” fiscally conservative. The One’s statism on steroids is reorienting the conservative movement. I wonder if he realizes it yet.
Exit admission: I really want to see the full segment of the Hannity interview shown here.

Agreed, that was hilarious.
For those saying it should be zombie Kennedy, the problem is it wouldn’t make sense, as the Democrats have a leader. Several leaders actually. If you want to make that joke it should be about zombie JFK and you should time travel to 2002 when it would be relevant. Or wait for the pendulum to swing back the Republicans’ way.
Siobhan on November 30, 2009 at 9:07 PM
The reference Zombie Reagan goes back a few months to a Paul Krugman column where he blamed America’s reluctance to big government on some “Zombie Reagan” phenomenon, the remnants of the Reagan Revolution. People have mentioned it from time to time. Throw in the fact that the Republicans don’t have a Reagan like figure at the moment and there is some context. I thought it was rather funny, but I figure I should give some background to all the crybabies.
LevStrauss on November 30, 2009 at 9:10 PM
JFK would be too far to the right for the Democrat/Socialist Party of today.
thomasaur on November 30, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Zombie Reagan goes back a lot further than a few months.
Oh, heck. I’m a lousy capitalist if I can’t sell a few dang t-shirts.
S. Weasel on November 30, 2009 at 9:12 PM
My post mortem: The encouraging subtext here is that, while tasteless, the Onion video demonstrates that conersvatives have asserted themselves, and find the current crop of wannabes wanting.
FalseProfit on November 30, 2009 at 9:13 PM
I like the end of the interview where he attacks Sean and starves.
LevStrauss on November 30, 2009 at 9:16 PM
Didn’t we get stuck with a zombie presidential candidate in 2008?
HornetSting on November 30, 2009 at 9:24 PM
This (SICK) not a bit funny. But here lately ALLA you will post just about anything.Just like in this post with all others you just can,t help yourself to try to get a little dig at Gov.Palin when you said Palin leads but her support is soft.
thmcbb on November 30, 2009 at 9:26 PM
I’m a Robot Nixon man myself.
DrSteve on November 30, 2009 at 9:26 PM
AP, I seriously hope you will think about either pulling the picture or the entire post.
It’s highly offensive.
And Republicans could just as well resurrect “zombie” Lincoln, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
The fact that Reagan is the one who died in recent years isn’t salient when it comes to our leaders invoking core Republican values and principles.

HaRoooooo!
Maquis on November 30, 2009 at 9:45 PM
Yep, you’re definitely not coming with me to see “Young Frankenstein.” :-P

Attention patrons: your humor must be this tall before reading the post. Scolds, prudes, and busybodies should consult their doctor before returning.

How about a “Stepford Reagan”?
Mojave Mark on November 30, 2009 at 10:03 PM
I’ve never liked that movie anyway.
Besides, the Frankenstein story is supposed to involve dead bodies.
The Reagan Legacy is not.
Jenfidel on November 30, 2009 at 10:06 PM
Same ole Liberal Media Bias in this report
They didn’t mention that Republicans got the reanimation formula from local Democrat Party voter registration workers in Illinois. The Dmes are so good at working the undead that a whole cemetary section voted three times for the senior Daley!
ACORN’s headquarters are in a New Orleans funeral home for a reason, you know.
IlikedAUH2O on November 30, 2009 at 10:09 PM
I think all this angst about what direction the party is going in is overblown. Polls like this change year to year and really don’t matter. And the video is sort of tacky.
Terrye on November 30, 2009 at 10:11 PM
The “Reagan Revolution” was mostly hype. It was great especially after four years of Carter, the constant ridiculing of Ford before that, the Nixon Watergate scandal and it was nice to see the usual suspects respect American power again.
But there is no real lasting legacy as many of those who voted for Reagan also voted in Slick Willy. Some would point to the so-called “collapse of Communism” (an MSM meme if there ever was one).
I’m pretty much convinced the Communist Party in Moscow was looking to downsize and re-organize regardless of who the U.S. president happened to be, in such a way as to go back and move through the Age of Capitalism which Russia skipped as a result of the Bolshevik Revolution where Czarist Russia was stuck in the Age of Feudalism. China has done the same thing, and without Reagan telling them to tear down walls and such.
Dr. ZhivBlago on November 30, 2009 at 10:22 PM
Why bring poor George Romero into this mess? It’s not very funny, and in case you miss the joke, they only repeat it half a dozen times. Subpar onion.
EMD on November 30, 2009 at 10:22 PM
I was starting to think the video was a fake until I heard him say that the government has lost the endangered species list…..That just rings too true to be false.
cjk on November 30, 2009 at 10:24 PM
I don’t like the zombie deal put on a real person. Would I want my late father parodied like this? I did not view the clip
Fiscal conservative won’t work now because trust is missing.
Schwarzenegger helped vanquish the trust. Bush and McCain delivered the coup de gras. The RINO brigade is working overtime to preserve the cynicism
Palin is doing well because she is the most hated by the establishment and therefore the most likely to be trusted
At this point, people pray Palin is honest, but fear she is another phoney, which is why she generates excitement (hope) but does not get a final vote
Trust is the only currency of the next election. Many who think they can run are already DOA because of distrust.
Sometimes parties can pull out slick unknowns like Carter, Clinton and Obama. Bush was unveiled by party big whigs as one whom even the DEMS in Texas trusted (Ann golden spoon aside)
This election is different because the big whigs are no longer trusted and they have let it be known they do not trust the voters
If the GOP RINOs want to kill Palin, they should embrace her but they are afraid of Palin cooties, so Palin keeps her advantage
The economy is going to sink like a rock before the next election and if we don’t have a war, anyone who supported failed programs is DOA. If we have a war, the public will not accept a wimp because they are already on the ropes
Mostly wimps and weasels in DC
entagor on November 30, 2009 at 10:25 PM
Well, don’t forget that Stoatie Weasel at sweasel.com has been doing Zombie Reagan for years. If anything, the Onion is just following her lead….
Scubafreak on November 30, 2009 at 10:28 PM
I probably won’t watch the video as I just don’t have the time, but the Onion has been putting out some pretty good skits recently.
To those protesting and hotly announcing how offended they are … please lighten up. Reagan is a historical figure and fair game for parody like this. It’s not a personal attack against your beliefs or even one against Reagan, it’s just a sight gag designed to elicit some chuckles.
We have to be able to laugh at ourselves, folks, otherwise we risk becoming rigid ideological hypocrites like the other side.
Wellsy on November 30, 2009 at 10:38 PM
Ronald Reagan was prob’ly the best prez we’ll ever know in our lifetimes; I still miss him. This is just tasteless. I hope Nancy doesn’t blog.
sabu on November 30, 2009 at 10:39 PM
Of that, I am sure.
SagebrushPuppet on November 30, 2009 at 11:14 PM
It’s just a dumb video sketch, people! Lighten up! Dang, some of you are acting like Obamacare has already been signed into law!
P.S.: I’ll bet Reagan would have thought it was funny.
SagebrushPuppet on November 30, 2009 at 11:24 PM
That being said, Young Frankenstein wasn’t as tasteless and vile as this video.
Jenfidel on November 30, 2009 at 11:41 PM
Not yet, but it’s way closer to being a reality than it ever should have been.
Bet he wouldn’t because it isn’t.
It’s vile and sends a horrid, untrue message about both him, the way his legacy is remembered by Republicans and about the state of the GOP itself.
Jenfidel on November 30, 2009 at 11:47 PM
Reminds me of a comment a German friend of mine said. We were talking about the impetus for the fall of the wall. She mentioned that most Germans saw it as a peaceful, social movement that came from the discontent of the East German people. I mentioned that many American conservatives think Reagan did it, and that they whine whenever he isn’t mentioned in conjunction with the wall falling. She responded, “If Reagan had the power to tear the wall down, it would have been nice of him to do it a few years sooner”.
crr6 on November 30, 2009 at 11:54 PM
Favorite part of the crawl: “Anti-Semitic researchers looking for cancer cure for everyone but Jews.”
Bwaha. The Onion is a hoot.
Meryl Yourish on December 1, 2009 at 12:21 AM
I imagine getting machine gunned at attempting to cross would cause some discontent eventually. Perhaps your German friends might have wanted to take down the wall a little earlier themselves, instead of waiting until after Regan made it possible.
Back on topic: The video could have been funnier…but it still made me chuckle, and ANYone who doesn’t know enough to stay away from remote farm houses with a zombie probably has zombification coming to them.
And yeah, I’d vote for Regan today if I could. He’s better dead than nearly anyone alive in contention on either end of the political rainbow.
DrAllecon on December 1, 2009 at 12:29 AM
LOL. That’s exactly what they did. Reagan didn’t wave a magic wand and “make it possible”. If he could, why didn’t he do so sooner?
I’ll tell her about your comment tomorrow. Should be good for a laugh.
crr6 on December 1, 2009 at 12:32 AM
I’m glad I could cheer them up. Considering that they spent all those years getting killed attempting to cross, living in abject poverty unter a totalitarian rule, living separately from family members who were on the other side of the Berlin Wall that some waited 40 years to revist, I’m sure they could use the laugh.
But…why didn’t THEY take it down sooner? Why did they only become “discontent” enough to do something about it AFTER Regan set about dealing a major blow to communism and leading others to claim their freedom? Ah well, I wouldn’t want to ruin her laugh, so nevermind.
DrAllecon on December 1, 2009 at 12:42 AM
This just in; Ronald Reagan is DEAD, let the poor man rest in peace.
Why don’t folks stop wasting their time and attempt to find an actual CONSERVATIVE to represent them.
Romney is a fraud.
Huckabee is too weak.
Newt is a liar.
Steele is also a fraud.
McShamnesty is pathetic.
Ron Paul is a 911 conspiracy freak and a lying fraud.
GOP locksteppers are scared feces-less of Sarah Palin because she might just take the RINOs down with the leftists.
I would actually like to see a candidate MORE conservative than Reagan, someone more in the mold of Jefferson and Madison, someone who actually would SUPPORT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION. Y’all remember the Constitution, don’t you?
nelsonknows on December 1, 2009 at 12:49 AM
Sorry. I just hate to see Reagan disrespected this way.
I get where they are coming from, but Reagan is just too important.
This is just disrespectful.
gary4205 on December 1, 2009 at 12:54 AM
I’m sorry, this is really disgusting and disrespectful.
Amy Proctor on December 1, 2009 at 12:58 AM
I agree.
BUT, we HAVE a true Conservative. In fact, SHE’S the daughter Reagan wished he would have had. Sarah Palin is the very essence of Reagan. She’s a true leader. That’s WHY, left wingers like Allah and his buddies fear her.
Sarah is the real deal.
The rest are just pretenders to the crown.
gary4205 on December 1, 2009 at 1:17 AM
I’ll take this time to note that looking at my choice of Hucktard and McCain for the primary, I went ahead and wrote in Zombie Reagan. No, really, I did write in Zombie Reagan. The whole concept of Zombie Reagan is a commentary on how impotent and pathetic the GOP leadership is, dunno why you people are getting so bent out of shape about it.
Also, go buy Zombie Reagan gear at S. Weasel’s shop.
doubleplusundead on December 1, 2009 at 1:33 AM
No, the vile concept of Reagan as a zombie is to discredit any GOP leadership then or now.
It’s as much a denigration of the living President Reagan’s legacy as it is the current leadership.
And our choices aren’t limited to Huckabee and McCain anymore because the GOP primary is long over.
Because Reagan was one of our greatest presidents and a fine man in general and certainly doesn’t deserve to be remembered in such a tasteless, disgusting way.
That’s why.
Jenfidel on December 1, 2009 at 3:18 AM
Did Reagan personally make the wall come down? Of course not. It was the result of forces on the scale of nations. But the bottom line is just exactly as Reagan called it: Communism doesn’t work.
Why didn’t it happen sooner? Because we kept propping them up. Just one example was Jimmy Carter sending them wheat when they inevitably couldn’t produce enough.
But it was Reagan who understood they were going down, not up. It was Reagan who pushed them into realizing they could not compete. It was Reagan who was derided as a fool and a madman when he said communism would be left on the ash heap of history.
If your German friend doesn’t realize the part Reagan had in all this, that’s not surprising. Lots of people in our country are abominably ignorant of history, too.
There Goes The Neighborhood on December 1, 2009 at 3:26 AM
Great spotlight on the problem within the GOP. So do another about Conservatives, and compare their number with RINOs. The GOP needs to clean out all RINOs or they’ll lose every election until they disband.
davecatbone on December 1, 2009 at 5:13 AM
Someday the rest of the GOP will realize that you can’t be conservative without being socially (ABORTION etc) conservative. Being fiscally (money is God?) conservative only, means effectivly supporting the culture of death. Perhaps the bell will someday ring that people who will coldly kill innocent babies will also try to kill old people when they get expensive; will be corrupt in money management, and try to manipulate everyone else’s life. Why? Because when evil -real evil- is acceptable, so too is all the evil that fiscal conservative loathe. You just can’t be partially human and expect peace and happiness.
Nor can we be partially conservative. We either support all of the dignity and rights of all men, codified by our forefathers or we persih. We can’t loathe “soak the rich” thinking of the left without loathing first the mentality that allows for eagerly killing babies, even outside the womb as does Obama and the left.
Pro-life and family values people also strongly support being fiscally responsible, demand freedom to rworship, a strong family, limited government intervention (that “render to Ceasar” thing) We value strong property rights, without which there can be no true charity. Most support gun rights and strong defense. How do you think we made it this far, through a depression and a few major wars without strong family values and a belief in defense of what’s right about our nation? It is the fiscal conservatives that need to get back to aligning themselves with the whole package if they wish America to continue being great.
